I thought you might like to share this with your readers, it's an MP3 of my Ensoniq ESQ1 trying to sound like a 303.
It took about an hour to make/tweak the patch. All sequencing and drums are from an MPC1000, there's a little slapback delay on the ESQ1, and some reverb on the drums. The ESQ1 would've sounded better with some compression but then, so does my 303.
I won't be selling the 303 just yet but it's a nice sound. The big difference of course is that I had to spend ages programming all the note velocities and portamento, and remember what range of filter and envelope settings the patch sounds good within, whereas a 303 practically writes good patterns for you and sounds good whatever you do with the knobs :)
By the way, it's not trying to be a good track, just a demo of the sound!"

I'm listening and I'm loving this! I always love ESQ-1 MP3S, the ESQ=1 is such a versatile awesome synth!

Ed DMX is one of the most influential modern Electro artists, and did a lot to bring the sound to relevance again in the late 90s. And the demo is great - showcases a sometimes neglected synth that deserves more attention.
ReplyDeleteAnother ESQ-1 acid producer is Single Cell Orchestra, who used to perform live using the sequencer in the ESQ-1.
I must say i wasn't a big fan of early DMX Krew works. Recently he's released 'collapse of the wave function' LPs/EPs on Rephlex and its some really good stuff.
ReplyDeleteEd also defies the typical Rephlex artists attitude as he'll actually chat with you or answer emails etc. good guy good music.
Not bad, but not very 303 sounding, gets close in places but does not have the snap.
ReplyDeleteNice try, Mr. Upton. However, you seem to be keytracking the filter, which as we all know is a big "no no". And you have to know as well as anybody else does that you can't play legato notes with the original 303 sequencer without applying slide.. (^_^)
ReplyDeleteIf he said it was a 303 and later revealed the truth I doubt anyone would have second guessed if it was or wasn't a 303.
ReplyDeleteThere is slide on all legato notes, the thing is I had to make the slide very short because otherwise you hear stepping - the ESQ is pretty low res sometimes.
ReplyDeleteWith the keytracking - you're right, it just sounded better with a bit of keytracking on it.

ReplyDeletenice track. not the same, but somewhat similar. however, i can do similar on most analog synths. i still liked it though!
