Allen Strange Memorial

via Robin in the comments of this post.

"From the Family of Allen Strange.

Just wanted to thank you all for your kind words. Allen will always be remembered as a loving father, husband and musician. There will be a memorial reception at the Bainbridge Island Music Guild on March 1st at 4 pm. Directions and information can be found at http://www.islandmusic.org/. We are also planning a life celebration for Allen in the Bay Area of California in the next few months, I will be sure to post that info when it gets planned."

Thanks, a Notice and a Request

The Thanks
Firat off, every day I receive tips on interesting things to post. I want to thank everyone that takes the time out to send me stuff. Thank you!

The Notice
That said, I also receive requests to either put stuff up that is not directly synth-related as well as stuff I've already posted. There was a time where I received such a request about once a week. Now I'm getting them daily. For each one I have to go search the site to make sure I did indeed already put it up. I've been very diligent about replying to every single email that comes in, however, moving forward I will not be replying due to the amount of time this is taking up. I figure if I was willing to search for every single email that comes in, it's not too much to ask for the person sending something in to check first. So... If you do not get a reply and wonder what happened, try searching the site via the top left search box for key words that might bring up the item, or ask yourself if the item you sent me is about the synth.

The Request
Moving forward, before you choose to send me something for a post, one, search for it on the top left search box and two, ask yourself if what you are sending actually showcases a given synth. The bar for what goes up is two fold - one it hasn't gone up before, and two, it showcases a given synth. I do not put up generic electronic music posts unless you can clearly see or hear the synths used.

BTW, I created Synthwire for others to post, including promoting their own music. If you have something you'd like to put up there, shoot me an email when the time comes and I will add you to that site.

remember Syntrax? It's been updated to support 3rd generation phones. You can find more info including the list of supported phones here.

BTW, I created a new "mobile" label below for synths that run on mobile devices. If you catch any posts (old or new) that should have this label, post a comment.

AudioCubes Drop Test February 2008

"An inside view on creating and testing the AudioCubes, the first commercially available tangible interface technology in the world (see www.percussa.com). In this video we test new packaging for the AudioCubes, to make sure the product does not get damaged during transport. The inventor, Bert Schiettecatte, walks us through the process."

Update: Anyone know if you can theoretically use these like you would Reactable? I'm guessing you can assign them to control different parameters on a synth and use them in much the same way.

Roland Juno Series DCOs

"This page is a brief look at the technology of the Roland Juno series digitally controlled oscillators. These are an interesting hybrid design. Although digitally controlled and digitally stable, the oscillator produces a true analogue output, even for ramp waves, rather than the typical staircase waveform produced by feeding an incrementing count to a DAC or from a wavetable."

5 Minute Romp thru the IP

YouTube via evltube
"(1971) This is one of the movies that document the early history of the research that resulted in the creation of the EVL Lab.

This is an early video piece staring Dan Sandin in which he explains, in general terms, the functionality of the Sandin Analogue Image Processor (IP). This was the instructional video that accompanied the modules for constructing you own Sandin IP.

Sandin was an advocate of education and espoused a non-commercial philosophy, emphasizing a public access to processing methods and the machines that assist in generating the images. Accordingly, he placed the circuit board layouts for the IP with a commercial circuit board company and freely published schematics and other documentation.

The IP is a general-purpose patch programmable analogue computer, which is different from a regular digital computer, and is optimized to process video/television signals and sound. The video is processed through the IP "live" so that the viewer is able to see the effect on video signals. Initially the video is B&W, at the end Sandin debuts the 'Color IP'.

More information can be found on the EVL website"

Tokyo Shops and Magazines

via peterwendt. follow-up to this post.

"Urban Music - Hammonds and vintage synths. I didn't find the place.

Sofmap Creator's Land (in Googlish)
Sofmap is a big PC/software/etc. chain. "Creators Land" denotes their shops for audio, MIDI, desktop video, etc. There are some big "generic" Sofmap shops in Akihabara and a multistory Creators Land. I seem to remember:

1st floor = desktop music (Edirol, etc.)
2nd floor = new hardware
3rd and 4th floors = used

There is another Creators Land in Shinjuku, I think; the selection of used stuff wasn't as good.

There was a new+vintage shop called Modern Tools in northern Tokyo, but I can't find their WWW site anymore. They had a Roland System 100m, Yamaha CS-50, and lots more.

RockOn in Shibuya had a very small used selection, but I liked it for new stuff. Sort of a combination of Analog Haven and GC Pro. Doepfer, Jomox, and Studio Electronics in one corner; big control surfaces and high-end preamps at the other end. They were the Japanese agents for Technosaurus, and they had the "small" Sony Oxford digital mixer (RMX-100).

I visited a few more grungy little used stores, but I can't really recommend them.

Japanese musicians' magazines:
Sound&Recording (in Googlish)
Keyboard (in Googlish)
DTM (in Googlish)

At least you can see what the covers look like.
Where to get the magazines: Kinokinuya Bookstores (in Googlish)

Buy the magazines here and drool over the ads.

Searching for deals and shops in Japan: Digimart (like eBay for musicians) (in Googlish)

Sorry, this is all in Japanese. You can convert it too Googlish, or ...

A lot of the terms are actually in phonetic (Japanese) English! The angular "letters" are the Japanese katakana "alphabet". Find a basic study outline about Japanese with a table of katakana symbols. Using the table, you can find terms like "synzesiza", "osciray-ta", "keybodo", "kontro-ra", and "fil-ta". Even if you don't want to learn Japanese in general, this will help you a lot. Browse www.fiveg.net, and you can learn the characters for "used", etc., from the links.

Oh, and if you visit ... Shibuya caters to techno and DJ stuff, and J-pop; it's a 20-something place. There are DJ-focused gear shops (including Echigoya Music), huge billboards of the latest female J-pop stars, and the "young and fashionable" department stores will have videos of battle DJs in the display windows. After 9-10 PM, there were young rock bands playing on the street corners. The sea of humanity on the weekends is unbelievable.

I hope this is useful.

Regards,

Peter"

Roland RS-505

images via this auction

"The RS-505 Paraphonic Strings replaced the classic RS-202 and combined strings, a basic polysynth section and a bass section. The keyboard was shortened to 49 keys and is split down the middle to assign different sounds to the left and right sides of the keyboard.

The Synth section has four waveforms (selected by the large white buttons) and its own VCF with cutoff and resonance sliders, VCA ADSR sliders and LFO features. The Bass section has three preset bass sound types to choose via the big red buttons. It has its own VCA Attack and Release sliders and Vibrato controls. The String section has two String preset sounds - selectable via the big green buttons - and other features borrowed from the RS-202.

Sounds from the three tone sections can be blended for interesting results and the built-in Ensemble chorusing effect really warms, thickens and lushes up the sounds! The Paraphonic 505 also features an external audio input (mono) so you could run another synth through the quadruple-BBD Ensemble chorus. A new little performance control section to the left of the keyboard provides convenient volume, tune, glide and pitch bender controls. Similar to the ARP Omni, the Paraphonic 505 is considered one of Roland's finest string synths of its era."
