JH Tau Phaser Samples

via Drew on AH:

"A few samples of the two Tau Phasers. I tried to keep it short and sweet so as not to clog too much bandwidth... Go here

the 2 files 1VCO through 2 Tau are just that--one is in the vibrato setting on both, the other is phased setting on both. The 2210 and 3086 show that those 2 are different sounding, even when tuned together and playing the same sequence (controlled by a Kenton Pro4 at the 1v/oct input). Tauseq is a drone with 2 taus tracking each other for a stereo effect Twintau is both running free with pink noise demonstrating the extreme through zero effect.

If you guys want me to put some stinkin' drum loops through these things I can do that too, but these waveforms made it easier to hear what each phaser sounds like.

Thanks to Brandon Daniel for hosting this!

Drew Neumann"

Peavey Midi Bass Guitar

images via this auction
"This is a very hard-to-find midi bass from Peavey. Excellent condition cosmetically and functionally. Use this as a standard bass guitar and/or to control any electronic midi instrument (synth, drum machine, sampler, etc).... Knobs on the body control bass tone, bass level, volume of midi instrument, and master volume. Control a huge array of settings and parameters easily using the toggle switch on the body in conjunction with LED readout (visible in the pics on the top of the body) and fretted notes. For instance you can set it up to play a piano sound on the 'G' string, a full drum kit on the 'D' string, a guitar lead on the 'A' string, and a horn on the 'E' string, plus bring in the sound of the bass whenever you want - all right from the guitar itself! Then instantly change the configuration for the next song by fretting a note (each note location on the fretboard has a different predesignated function for midi purposes) while toggling the data switch once. Also setup the sensitivity of the midi triggering for each individual string, playing style (finger or pick), and a lot of other customizable parameters - all from the bass. This is a bass guitar and so very much more . . . Midi bass systems vary in ability to 'track' played notes (translate normal playing to midi notes) and this one does this extremely well. It also tracks bends and slides! It has a normal 1/4 inch out jack in addition to a proprietary cable to carry the midi information to the included 1 unit rackmount midi converter. The commonly available guitar and midi cords aren't part of this auction but the Peavey cable, user manual, and power adapter for converter are included, as is a mint SKB guitar case."

Update via Carbon111 in the comments: "From the photos I can see the owner never scraped the black 'cancer' out of it or repaired the switches and sliders. :(

Anyone buying a Rogue, MG1 or a Opus3 should make sure the decayed foam has been cleaned out...it eventually destroys the pots and switches.

Awful gunk to remove. The last few Rogues I've seen on eBay weren't clean."

Effector 13 Synth Mangler

ALISA 1377

images via this auction

"rare vintage Russian analog monophonic synthesizer ALISA 1377. It was made in USSR in 1980s. ALISA synthesizers were made especially for experimental electronic music, creating of sound effects in soviet cinema and scientific acoustic researches. This unique instrument has warm, aggressive and absolutely original analog sound! Synth has 1 OSC (4 wave forms), ADSR control, Filter, different modulation, vibrato and portamento effects.

This unit is in good working condition. It was tested in studio.

5din to ¼ Jack adapter is included. Voltage is 220V."

VERMONA

images via this auction
"This is really rare analogue synth made in Germany in 1980s. It is a 2-VCO monophonic analog synthesizer. It has most basic analog edit parameters. A 24 dB/oct analog VCF filter with 4 knobs (Brilliance, CutOff, Resonance, Contour), a single LFO to modulate the VCO or VCF sections and a typical ADSR VCA envelope. There are preset VCF and VCA settings as well as a Manual mode, but there is no real Patch setting storage available. Also absent are MIDI and CV or Gate. Its sounds are pretty basic analog stuff. It makes a real nice analog bass. The string sounds are questionable. But with only 2 VCOs and such limited programmability, you won't get a whole lot of stuff out of this synth. There are no on-bard arpeggiators, sequencers or multitimbral options. The only real effects on-board is the portamento-like Glide effect and Vibrato. Colorful knobs, a clean layout, vintage wood end-cheeks and a genuine analog sound. It's an interesting piece. "

Capacitive touch sensors gain fans - EMS in EDN

click here for the full article on EDN.
"The product of Russian-government-sponsored research into proximity sensors, the Theremin sensor, which Leonard Theremin invented in 1919, represents possibly the first commercial use of capacitive sensing. The device senses the proximity of a musician's hands to a pair of antennas that modulate the frequency and amplitude of two heterodyning oscillators that form the heart of the world's first electronic music synthesizer. Continuing this theme, in 1972, designer David Cockerell at Electronic Music Studios penned the KS keyboard as a sequencer for the company's range of voltage-controlled synthesizers (Reference 1). This intriguing device boasts a 30-note, touch-sensitive keyboard whose inputs rely on the TTL characteristics of two 74150 16-to-one-line multiplexers. These devices scan the keyboard, taking their clock inputs from a 4-bit binary ripple counter. A network biases the inputs to the multiplexers to hold them close to their switching threshold, which a finger press then exceeds. At this time, the appropriate data-selector output goes low to latch the 4-bit code and the multiplexer's identity to create a 5-bit address that represents key position."

Chronology part 6 - on Bontempi Hit organ

YouTube via organfairy. via synthzoom.
"Chronology part 6 by J.M.Jarre. Most of it was played as a MIDI file using "Noteworthy Composer" for Windows. Bass arpeggio was played on Roland JX8P, strings and choir on Yamaha HE-8 organ, the rest was played on the computer's Yamaha XG soundcard - except the solo. The solo is supposed to be played on an accordeon. But since I don't own an accordeon I used the "green monster" instead. The "Bontempi Hit Organ" was made in the 70's and was actually quite common. It is a simplified accordeon with an electric pump instead of a bellow. However, it's not very good as it lacks the nessesary pressure to play fast. But what could I expect from something I got for 5 dkr. (0.8$) at a jumble sale..."

VCO synchronization made visible

YouTube via MusicMiK. Be sure to see the others here.
"Did you ever wonder, what really happens with VCO sync? Here you can see it.
I made this video during development of another VCO, my synchronization master is just a provisoric square oscillator, which produces a very unclean signal. Besides this i don't have the audio equipment in the lab to create a better audio on this :) But the main syncronization effect is visible and hearable.

Schematics might be released soon, after drawing and final check."

polyphonic "switch on time" with the M563

YouTube via moonmodular
"People asking: "What is SWITCH ON TIME"? at the M563 trigger sequencer.

With SOT you can define and optimize the width of your trigger/gate output signal. There are more creative possibilities: e.g. the SOT function manipulates the envelope generator times. Depending on its setting, it lets the synth-voice/patch sound different.

[The pitch is produced by a M560 (960clone) sequencer.]"

Saul Williams Remix - Banged & Blown Through (Humanoid Remix by Intervenus)

"Since the track was available for remix via NIN, I decided to give it a shot. I'm a fan of Saul Williams, and I wanted to test out some of my gear. I have only used one slice of Saul's vocal track. The rest of this is entirely re-composed. Gear I used on this was running my Boss DR-880 through the Future Retro XS in overdrive, triggering the env generators. This gave me the main distorted kick. The rest comes from the Alpha Juno 2 and my Sh2 running through an alesis compressor, MPX 1, and into my Onyx mixer."
