Tiptop Audio DSP Feedback Loops

"Sitting at the core (or left of center, depending on how you look at it) of the Z5000 VCDSP is the Tiptop Audio 24-Bit DSP. What makes it even more unique is that because the modular format allows patching to and from anywhere in a system it is fairly easy to make very interesting use of the 16 different algorithms that the DSP contains.

All of the algorithms in the DSP work differently. Some handle the signal on two separate channels (like the delay effects), but the reverb algorithms, work entirely differently, mixing and processing the signal together using both processors.

Using that delightful feature, it is possible to send a signal into the left input and then feed the left output back to the module's right input that to create a wild feedback loop that makes the module to oscillate and create its own sounds and timbres, similar to the way filter resonance works. This oscillation will continue as long as the CTRL knob is set to MAX, and will decay as the knob is turned to MIN.

Technically, the module should start oscillating even with out any external signal. Using a sound source, however, gives you the ability to "trigger" and control the oscillation and also blends the oscillation timbre with that of the incoming sound source.

Check out the sample below for those long oscillations fading in and out as the sound source triggers them. It's nice to hear how the sound source is changes the tone of this oscillation each time it cycles."

You can find the sample here.
Be sure to check out the rest of Tiptop Audio for more.

Korg Kaoss MS-20 Pad

YouTube via Newueel
"This is the Korg Kaoss Pad (KP3) playing Korg MS-20 samples. All sounds (including rythm section) are created using only the Korg MS-20! The KP3 is used for sampling the sounds, and for adding effects.

I posted another vid explaining how the samples are made from scratch. So if you have an MS-20 and/or KP3 you should definitely check this out!"

New version out! This new version doesn't really include any new features. It's just an update to make it work on the 1.1.3 firmware.
iPhoneSynth is a simple synth for the iPhone. it includes a 16 step sequencer with the ability to change length and oscillator type(sawtooth, square or noise) individually for each step. It also includes a lowpass filter."

ARP Avatar Guitar Synthesizer Owners Manual

via Loscha.

"Original manual for the Arp Avatar Guitar Synthesizer. 52 pages (including covers) The manual is writing primarily as a guide for Guitarists and other people who are new to synthesis, however, the structured exercises in the book are a valuable learning tool for anyone who is using analog synthesizer, but especially good if you have a related ARP product (such as the Odyssey)... Cover still very slick; It is a matt slightly gloss finish."

Happy Birthday Kevin!

"...wonky synth cake!

It's a Happy Birthday to Kevin at Arbiter today...

The man loves his synths.

(It's meant to be a CS80, but its a bit more CS70m if you ask me...)"

"This is not a "Which Is The Best" comparison! I love both of these synths and obviously they aren't really comparable anyway.

So I am running the P8 in 'unison' mode with two OSCs only.

I made this video purely for anyone interested in exactly such a comparison."

Percussa Cubes with Resonant Synth

Percussa Cubes with Resonant Synth from Livid Instruments on Vimeo.
"Using the distance sensors on the audio cubes, I'm controlling synth parameters with one cube to "shape" the sound with my hands, then using another as an "exciter" to make the sound happen by waving my hands in front. Much as a violin needs a bow to excite the string to vibrate, and a flute needs air to make its sound, this synth I programmed in Cycling '74's Max/MSP (based on CNMAT's "resonators" object), relies on a virtual breeze from my hands to make sound."

Midify Prototype Game Boy SP Demo

YouTube via Modd3d. Via MODD3D where you can find more info.
"This is a quick prototype demo of Midify, a tiny little board I'm working on that lets you add a MIDI port to a Game Boy or just about anything.

The Game Boy SP is running a synthesizer cartridge that would normally have to be played on the Game Boy buttons. With Midify installed it can be played with a MIDI keyboard, sequencer or whatever.

Check out http://www.division-6.com for more info on the project.

BTW: I already know I can't play keyboard so be nice in the comments. =0)"

Update via Scott in the comments:
"I'm trying to finish the boards up by the end of the month. I'd love to hear some feedback on what you would use them for and what you would like to see them do. I've started a forum for them:

Matti Bye playing the Korg MS-10

YouTube via RothHandle
"Over the last couple of weeks me and Matti Bye have been working on an album of music inspired by the circus. This project has been a wonderful collaboration and the material we have recorded so far sounds nothing short of eerie, funny and amazing.

In this short film Matti is playing the Korg MS-10.

I have worked with Matti before but oddly enough we have never actually recorded anything. Matti is a very well known composer for film scores and he has also written music for silent movies as well playing live to the actual film.

This film was shot at Roth Händle studios in Stockholm. It is where I spend most of amy awake time recording the instruments that are there. In 1997 I bought my first Mellotron and then a couple of months later a MIni Moog and the studio has grown steadily since then. In 2001 I got my first own room at an old abandoned shipyard and I have since then moved twice. The studio is now located in Sundbyberg (about 15 minutes from Stockholms central). If you are curious about the studio, booking, blogs and/or the instruments that are there please take a stroll by www.roth-handle.nu
The studio is available for booking"
