Resonant Neuron Synthesis

"A new sound generation of Jürgen Michaelis

At the beginning of the 21. century there is a clear trend in all areas of science and technology: a departure from the old cartesianic, linear and determinable world view. The new paradigmas are named complexity, order from chaos, self organisation of complex systems, networking and cooperation. A new math of complexity is under way to evolve, powered by new knowledge in biology, information technology and quantum physics.
It shows up that to capture nature by numerical mathematics is not that easy as it was thought of by the classical advocates of the mechanistic and reductionistic view. From a certain complexity onwards a system is not even the sum total of its parts but a greater whole which gains totally new attributes than its sub structures.

Also in cultural spheres of society those new thoughts push forward. Who hasn't heard about neural nets yet, which as technical pendants to the biological predecessor should teach the actually stupid, static and serial working computers the creative "thinking". Currently quite simple models are used to simulate the biological processes in neurons, axons and synapses.

Why not use these thoughts for the development of a new sound generation? A modulation path can be seen e.g. as a branch of a neural net, too. A signal can be a discrete voltage or a frequency or a sound or an oscillator. At last, the only question is in which context of time you see (and hear) those things." [link]

"This is a ultra high end filter you could never buy unless you could find someone to custom make one for you. Its a dual variable slope bandpass moog filter. Low pass filter can go 2-12 poles, the high pass only 4. Independent Q control. Vc frequency and bandwidth. All pass or bandpass mode switch. sounds great, but never added to any system. Can be used as stereo filter too. Stereo MOOG filter."

Introducing The Moog Guitar

YouTube via MoogMusicInc. Follow-up to this post. Leave your comments there.
"The Moog Guitar puts revolutionary new technology in the hands of the guitarist. Moog Music is known for building the finest instruments and the Moog Guitar is first and foremost a very fine guitar; designed to be played by the best musicians as their primary axe. Its AAAAA maple top, mahogany body and ebony finger board bespeak the quality that musicians have come to expect from a Moog instrument.

The addition of Moog Guitar Electronics opens guitarists to a whole new musical vocabulary: Not a guitar synthesizer, not a MIDI guitar or an effects processor; players are intimately connected to The Moog Guitar because it works its magic on the strings themselves." comment here

From the Fertile Mind of Moog: Tomorrow’s Axe Debuts at NAMM

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (June 5, 2008) – The much-anticipated and much-talked-about Moog Guitar will debut at Summer NAMM in Nashville. The Moog Guitar is “a fantastic axe designed to be played by the best musicians in the world,” says Moog Music President Mike Adams.

According to Adams, The Moog Guitar opens the guitarist to a whole new musical vocabulary: “It’s not a guitar synthesizer; not a MIDI guitar; not an effects processor,” Adams said. “The guitarist is intimately connected to The Moog Guitar because it works its magic on the strings themselves.” See the attached FAQ for additional details.

The first public demonstration of The Moog Guitar will be at the Moog Guitar Showcase, featuring Kenny Vaughn and Fareed Haque with Garaj Mahal. The Moog Guitar Showcase will take place at Nashville’s renowned 3rd and Lindsley on Friday, June 20 from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. Tickets are $10.

The Moog Guitar will be demonstrated to media at NAMM at a press conference at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 21 in Moog Music’s NAMM Booth 2030.

The first ever Moog Guitar will be the limited edition Paul Vo Collector Edition Guitar. The AAAAA maple top guitar with a mahogany body and ebony finger board will be a much sought-after axe even without the addition of the patented Moog electronics. Each guitar will be individually signed by Moog associate and guitar inventor Paul Vo and will carry a sealed Certificate of Authenticity identifying it as the first ever Moog Guitar.

The Moog Guitar offers three unique modes…Sustain, Mute and Controlled Sustain. In the Sustain mode, it provides infinite, powerful sustain on every string and at every fret position; Mute removes energy from the strings, resulting in a variety of staccato effects; Controlled Sustain allows the musician to play sustained, single-note or even polyphonic lines with strong sustain and effortless clarity. In this mode, the Moog Guitar sustains the notes being played while actively muting the notes not being played.

“Take the powerful combination of sustain and mute…add the ability to move that power between the neck and bridge pick-ups, and suddenly you can pull both subtle and dramatic harmonic blends from the strings,” said Moog Senior Engineer Cyril Lance. The Moog Guitar’s creative power is further enhanced by the built-in Moog ladder filter. Both the harmonic blending as well as the ladder filter are controlled from the included expression pedal, according to Lance.

The late Bob Moog and Adams often spoke of entering the guitar market, but it was not until Vo’s invention that Moog Music felt it had something truly innovative to bring to the guitar market. “Clearly, this guitar meets the definition of a Moog product that Bob ingrained here at Moog Music: A Moog product must be an inspiration to the creative process of making music,” Adams said.

“As one person told me, ‘Only Moog could have done this.’”

REINTRODUCING THE P.M.S. SYNTAR ANALOGUE SYNTHESIZER

YouTube via redmartian

"The Syntar was designed in the late 70s by George Mattson. George's company, P.M.S. (Performance Music Systems) manufactured these units with some work done by EML. There are roughly 8 units built and sold with a handful of prototypes, but by 1980 Moog Music had the Syntar beat marketing wise with its lesser Liberation.

Mark Mothersbaugh once optically scanned a Syntar at NAMM, but it seems the Liberation ended up in their rig.

I wanted to post a simple piece first and then later go into much further detail about what the Syntar can do that most mono-synths cannot and why it blows all other 'keytars' away.

(I hope I beat Jean Michel Jarre by posting the first Syntar video anywhere)"

Note that Jean Michel Jarre indeed did recently pick up a Syntar. Via his official blog:
"These past few days I have been chasing some analog instruments which I need for some new tracks and for the future on stage. I found a second Moog Liberation and a very rare portable keyboard, the Syntar."

Vermona DRM1 MKIII

YouTube via wiretotheear
"About two weeks ago I purchased a brand new Vermona DRM1 MKIII from Schnieders Buero in Berlin. I've had some time to play with it and am ready to report to you. These things are in demand and back ordered. It took almost three weeks for Vermona to deliver my DRM1 to Herr Schnieder. There is a good reason why: these sound smashing!

There is nothing like the Vermona DRM1. It is a fully analog drum machine done right. The super fast attack time on the kick and snare make them snap and crack in a way that will make you say "YES THIS IS IT!". The hi hats are so smooth, bright and shimmer without any EQ needed. The DRM1 has a real spring reverb built into it and when turned up on the clap and snare channels the clock turns back to 1980. There's are also multiple extra drum channels for lazer zaps or toms which can be manipulated to the extreme with FM. If I had to describe it's overall tone in one word I would say: chrome!

It uses standard midi but you can not record knob changes into your DAW. You will need to put your hands on the controls, start recording it as audio and capture your movements in real time. You can't save presets. Thank god for that. The main point of all those knobs is to focus in on each song your doing and tune each sound, the hi hat decay level, the snap of the kick. There is a pan control for each sound and individual outputs for each channel.

The unit is metal and feels very well built. Vermona is from East Germany. The reason you buy something like this is the sound.

EFM VCF6c Diode Ladder Filter

"The Electronics For Music EFM VCF6c is a very distinct sounding filter. It will self oscillate nicely at higher resonace settings. Changing C9 to 100 uF (or more) will extend the lower range.

It's a good idea to match all of the diodes for same forward voltage drop. I also matched Q1 and Q2 for hfe. In both cases take pains to make sure they are all at the same temperature! Let them sit in a thermally stable environment (away from drafts, windows, heat/AC registers, etc) for a while beforehand, and only handle them with tweezers or pliers. Don't hold the tweezers in your hand for long, either."
