Vocal Filter detail

flickr by fonik2000
full size "PCB for Jim Patchell's Vocal Filter" "The 100-1003 is now in the public domain. This filter was designed to simulate the vocal tract of a human. To do this, there are three resonant filters that will be tuned to different frequencies. To make it so that the phonems can be selected via voltage control, there are three CV shapers on the board. These will allow you to make a more or less arbitrary function to control the filter frequencies." More details on Jim Patchell's site.

"DSM1 Single Channel Drum Synth & Power module and 2 DSM2 Dual Channel Drum Synth Modules racked inside a 3 space rack"

Update vai BirdFLU in the comments: "Here's a couple tips for possible MPC shoppers:

You can't buy a DSM 2 by itself, you have to have a DSM 1 in order to power it.

The DSM 1 and 2 have the same tone generators; the DSM 1 has one and the DSM has two.

The DSM units make the same sounds as the toms and snare on the big MPC with the octagonal pads. I suspect the same sounds are in the MPC Kit (the finger drum thingie), but have never had a Kit to check and see."

You can go to Freesound, search for Atlantex, and download the snare and ton sounds to hear what the DSM sounds like."

YMO in London

via ryk
"Here are a couple of very blurred pictures form last nights YMO gig
at the RFH in London. Sakamoto, Takahashi & Hosono, plus three backup members playing lapsteel guitar, flugal horn, guitar and macintosh laptops. Takahashi was playing very tight drums with a tiny MIDI controller with nice pink xylophone type sticks, and later very tight real drums. Hosono played mostly electric bass guitar, and some singing - nice voice ! Sakamoto played keyboards, a lot of Fender Rhodes type stuff, with distortions and delay.

The highlights were some of the classics such as "ongaku" & "sportsman" although they played a lot of Human Audio Spounge tracks, which were pretty good. They played a new arrangement of Rydeen, with syncopated drumming, and a messy version of Riot in Lagos, plus some urprisingly groovy jazz-funk numbers. Unfortunately no Firecracker, or Cosmic Surfin' Sound mix was a bit harsh, piercing mid-range, but solid bass, maybe too much laptop audio!"

Frostwave Blue Ringer Ring Modulation Pedal

via this auction
"The Original FROSTWAVE Blue Ringer guitar pedal!

This is the prototype that Paul Perry made back in the early days before the production model you see today in their & other stores. All Frostwave production has halted for a while so get this while you can.

This pedal has controls for:
* gain on the main input (top left)
* gain on the main output (top right)
* wet/dry mix (top middle)
* frequency (big centre radio knob)
* an extremely sturdy on/off stomp switch

Inputs:
* Main
* Secondary / B input (for ring modulating one audio signal with any other of your choosing)
* Control Voltage (CV)

Output:
* Main

Case:
* Bulletproof (well bloody strong anyway) steel casing.

About the Blue Ringer
Bands such as Radiohead and countless others are putting ring modulation
into their recordings. Ring Modulation is a distinct incredibly versaltile effect that can be used creatively on almost any instrument.

One of the most classic examples is it's use as a vocoder like effect on voice.
The ring modulator was used as the voice of 'The Daleks' on the cult Sci-fi British TV show Dr Who.

The ring modulator uses an internal oscillator and balanced mixer to generate new harmonics that correspond to the sum and differences of the frequencies of the input signal and the local oscillator.

For example, if the input signal from a guitar or keyboard is 800 cps and the local oscillator is at 600 cps then the output will be two frequencies of 200 and 1400 cps. The level of the output signal tracks the level of the input, so the original signal is transformed into new frequencies.

The Blue Ringer has a balance control which allows the ratio of original signal and new harmonics to be varied. Thus, it is possible to have totally new harmonics or just to have a small amount of eg add a percussive edge to a keyboard sound.

By changing the local frequency - as the unit is operating - it is possible to change the generated frequencies in a unique way. This can be particularly effective with the lower notes of a drum machine.

Generate super intense tremolo! The Blue Ringer can be used as a high quality tremolo unit. In this mode, the balance control acts as a depth control and the frequency control adjusts tremolo speed.

Differences between this and the Blue RInger V2 from Frostwave:
No gain control for the second input and no MIC input. This pedal works either with an OSC or B input for modulation. It produces killer sound whether using it as a straight up ring mod or modding 2 of your own signals togther. The best example I herd using this was a bowed double bass ring modded with a sweet female vocal. Very cool & eerie audio result!"

Axel Electronics 771 Telephone Line Simulator

images via this auction

"Axel Electronics Telephone Line Simulator Model 771
'The 770A Telephone Line Simulator can simulate the worst case amplitude and envelope delay characteristics of transmission lines and can generate a number of random transmission line effects which are especially important to digital date transmission. These are Pulse Jitter, Phase Hit, Amplitude Drop-Out, Amplitude Hit, Frequency Shift, Nonlinear Distortion, Random Noise and Impact Noise. The amplitude, frequency and timing of these impairments can be introduced and controlled by an operator individually or in any combination.'"

"This is more of a patching-demo than a music video. This demonstrates a patching method I have developed (Well- I've never, EVER heard anyone talk about this patch, nor have I ever heard it played, in the 35+ years I've worked with modular synthesizers). Anyway- put simply, A/B switchable busses control the sequencer's patterns and reset-points."

The Solar Powered Theremin. electronic music unplugged.

YouTube via MarbleMad
"This is MORE than another optical theremin. This is a SOLAR POWERED theremin.

The Heliophone, an electronics kit available from:

http://www.clockworkrobot.com

The theremin was the worlds first electronic musical instrument and this tiny kit version has the added advantage of working with no need for batteries or external power. It works purely on solar power so when the oil runs out and civilisation crumbles to dust, you'll be glad it's not the end for electronic music.

More information about the solar theremin can be found here:

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/kinetic-...

The kit is very easy to build and suitable for beginners in electronics. It does require some soldering though."

Inside the V-Synth, Part 4

See the full post on Sequence 15. This video posted earlier is actually part of the review.

"The Time Trip pad operates in one of two modes: Time Trip mode, and assignable (or "X-Y") mode. In Time Trip mode, the pad operates in a polar, or R-theta mode. You operate it by placing your finger somewhere on the outer circle, and moving it in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction, quickly or slowly (or you can stop). When you do so, you are taking direct control of the time aspect of the Variphrase processing. Recall that Variphrase makes pitch and time independent parameters. When you touch the pad, time freezes. Moving your finger in a clockwise circle causes time to advance, at the speed you move at. A typical example used to demonstrate it is to set up a patch with a basic vocal sample."

TOM CAMERON - Music to Wash Dishes By

via this auction

"'music to wash dishes by' (BATHING, chicago, IL, 1982). legendary chicago rarity here, as the story goes, copies have been absolutely impossible, even for locals. here's a perfect example in the shrink, opened and played twice. clearly from the album title, dude has a sense of humor but this is no novelty LP, more of an art meets pop outing and the driving ambient pieces stand out with a soothing sounds-era raymond scott meets dr. philter banx sound. really quite original. some dark, moody synth soundscape stuff on her as well. most sounds like it was recorded 10 years earlier than its release date. back cover pic here is an all time great! see below. see my other auctions for a very fun list of obscure indie & private label LPs and please visit my websites companion records and showandtellmusic for more of the same." If anyone knows more about this one, feel free to comment or shoot me an email.

Anyone know what that is to the left of the EMLs?

EML 400 Sequencer
EML 401 Synthesizer
EML 101 Semi-modular

You can find more info on EML via the label at the bottom of this post, and the three here in this post.

Update via Marco Monte in the comments:

"My name is Tom Cameron and I would like to explain what is going on in the picture on the back cover of my old album "Music To Wash Dishes By". I was pleasantly surprised to see the album profiled and transcribed in the Matrixsynth Blog. The synthesizers (EML 101, EML 4004/401) and the Shure Vocal Master powered mixer were correctly identified as was the location of the performance.

What I think might be of most interest is what I was doing in the performance and how I was controlling the synthesizers. There is a white headband that I am wearing which contains three electrodes which are monitoring my brain waves using a biofeedback machine. This biofeedback monitor would register a small voltage pulse each time that I could successfully maintain a relatively steady alpha state. The brain biofeedback monitor is then connected to an optical interface. This allows me to use the feedback voltage to control the synthesizers without the risk of a ground loop frying my brain. The control voltage of about five volts was then used to control the pitch and filters of the EML 101 and also advance step by step the sequencer on the EML 4004/401. The result was that I could control and play the synthesizers with brain waves alone.

OK, so I couldn't play "Mary Had A Little Lamb" but I did create synthesizer sounds by just thinking about them. I thought that this was pretty cool but not many people understood it at the time. They were two young kids that did get it. They bought a few balloons and sneaked up behind my lawn chair and popped the balloons. As I have a slow shock response nothing happened but about ten minutes later a yellow jacket (I hate yellow jackets) came buzzing around my head and the synthesizers went crazy.

At the time I thought I'd come up with a pretty original demonstration. But later I found out that Alvin Lucier had done a similar demonstration ten years earlier. He obviously did not use synthesizers at that time but he did use biofeedback to control solenoid operated percussion instruments. And currently Tod Machover is pursuing mind-music connections in a similar vein but with much more sophisticated equipment.

I also painted the cover art."
