Synthorama - Moog Modular, Voyetra and Oberheim Room

images here

Some notes on the room:
Upon entering the area, on the left is a massive Moog vocoder and the Moog modulars. Yes, plural. In the far left corner is a Buchla Music Easel. From what I could tell it was not hooked up or working. To the right of the Buchla along the back wall of the room is a Steiner-Parker modular (hooked up and working) and to the right of that were two Voyetra 8s with keyboard controller, also working. On top of the Voyetra 8s was a Gleeman Pentaphonic not hooked up or working as far as I could tell. To my surprise the Gleeman's knobs felt rather light and cheap. For some reason I expected them to have a bit more weight to them. On the right wall of the room, opposite the Moog modulars, were the rest of the Octave Plateau synths followed by the Oberheims. See the images for the specifics.

Remember to click on the "All Sizes" link for each shot you'd like to see full size in the set. Click on the synthorama label below for the full set of posts on my visit to the Synthorama synthesizer museum. Note all images are going up including the "bad" ones.

Update: some notes on the Gleeman and Buchla via Martin: "The Gleeman Pentaphonic Clear also works properly. I have it not connected because I am still searching a better place than it has now. This synth earns a better place !!

Also the Music Easel is working fine. Actually it is not connected, I know. In the whole museum there are not a lot synths which do not work. Some of them have bad keyboard contacts or noisy potmeters or sliders but they are working."

Note the first shot in the set is the stairway down to the bottom floor of the museum.

Again, be sure to click on the synthorama label below for all posts of the visit. I don't really need to say this, but be sure to check out the full sets as there are some real rarities at the Synthorama synthesizer museum.

Next up, the Moog Modular room and more.

Four Analog Delays

"I received my Electro-Harmonix Deluxe memory man today (July 3rd 2008) and thought I would get it used to the walls of sound it'll be a part of. I just send a single signal from the cwejman and tested feedback on all the units.
The signal flow is as follows: Cwejman VM-1 (source) into Doepfer A-188-2 Tapped BBD Module into Ibanez AD9 into Moog MF104z into Electro-Harmonix Deluxe Memory Man"

Music composed one day, video made the next."

Noise Swells and other fun behavior TSP Teaspoon gets choked

"Cutting the current all the way out and bringing it back up while the button is held down makes all sorts of glorious noise swells and squeaks and other tones.
Note that I have a toggle switch which simply duplicates the button being pressed. Came in handy so I could hold the camera to show this feature.
More info on both wild machines.

FM synthesis waveforms, abstract art?

YouTube via dkimcg
"I was looking at the waveforms after the last video, and started to try to just make cool looking waveforms not really thinking too much of what it sounds like. I can get a pair of eyes with the square morph output, not shown in here, but really like the way these waveforms look as a visual artist. Pretty interesting looking stuff that math can give you.

The oscillators are trying to sync to each other, which causes that jumpiness when the wave cycles back to 0, at least that's what I think's happening. There's a 3rd oscillator acting as an LFO modulating the 1st oscillator as well. both the oscillators are outputting raw waveforms, but the gate even though is wide open may be coloring it ever so slightly, my deaf ears don't hear anything tho. So these are raw, unfiltered, ungated waveforms you are hearing, not for the faint of heart. It can get loud and abrasive. :)"

Yamaha MR-10 Analog Drum Machine

YouTube via peglegjoe857
"MR-10 in action. It is a cool little machine. It is kinda similar sounding to the Roland TR-606 and the Korg KPR-77, but it is not programmable so it has gone pretty unnoticed. It is also somewhat like the early rhythm machines, the CR-68 and 78, TR-66, The Minipops, KR-55, except that it has pads for manually playing it! This makes me think it would make a prime candidate for a mod, adding triggers at it's pads. Probably an easy mod, but I never got around to doing it. I actually think it sounds a bit better than the KPR-77. I have the boss DR-110 as well, which is in the same class as these machines, just missing the toms. Anywho, the MR-10 is nifty sounding and analog. A few neat controls. Small, simple, and pretty cool."

Note the dash in CS-5. I think Yamaha is probably the most inconsistent when it comes to the use of dashes in their model names.

TSP Teaspoon as gate keeper = hang on

YouTube via thetonewrecker
"I decided to try feeding the gate signal from the Acidlab Bassline to control the MC-202, but feed it through the Teaspoon. The CV control for the pitch passes directly, but now I can control the resampling/repeats of the 202 playing back the pitch it is following from the Acidlab. I really like how it grabs part of the trigger pulse and you get these strange clunky chugging retriggers. The 202 is not the best synth to trigger externally since the CV and gate go through the digital section before it hits the analog synth , but it was what I had on hand. More soon."

MIDIBox of the Week

via MIDIbox.org
"This unit is now a stereo sid v.2 (6582A + 8580R5), control surface C (a few things weren't used: play button, volume on the modulation matrix,...). The design was created with adobe illustrator then printed on vinyl sticker, box is a Retex#5, PCBs are from SmashTV, and knobs are from ALBS (thank you Goblinz !). The work cost me roughly 350€, but because I'm a beginner I burnt a few things... This is far from perfect: the inside is full of cables, the printed sticker is 1mm much longer than the drilled surface, knobs aren't as close of the surface as I wanted, ... but it works !" via sendling.
