Audio Damage Automaton Overview Pt. 2 - Effects...

YouTube via AudioDamage001. See the write up on Analog Industries.
"This is a run-through of the four different effects in Automaton. We had to edit the length a bit to get it to fit on YouTube; if you want to see the whole 11 minute version, hit the Vimeo version: http://vimeo.com/1702046" If the video isn't up, check back later.

WIARD ANALOG MODULAR SYNTHESIZER

images via this auction
"This system consists of a Woggle Bug Module, a Classic VCO Module, a Borg Filter Module and a Dual Envelator Module housed in a portable & storable wooden enclosure that has two power supplies which fit neatly into a door in the rear of the case (each power supply has a 6.5 foot cord). The front cover of the case was designed with extra space to store patch cords in, and for transporting the system with the synthesizer patched. The wooden enclosure and power supplies are unique & custom built by Grant Richter. This one-of-a-kind system was designed by Grant Richter to specifically supply a lifetime of endless sonic exploration in a self contained unit with a small footprint. The entire modular with cover attached measures a mere 12" x 13" x 14". The unfathomably deep architecture of the modules in this system, coupled with the very portable build of the system, place it in the ranks of legendary portable systems like the EMS Sythi and the Buchla Music box. This is the very unit displayed on the front page of the Wiard synthesizer website (it's the one in the wooden box, Grant added the handle on top after taking the picture). Richter had this to say about this system 'This is a custom system and I won't be making any more of them'.

*PLEASE NOTE* This system may consist of four modules, but the WIARD Synthesizer is NOT a "normal" modular synthesizer. It is much more powerful. The Woggle Bug module alone has the equivalent functionality of 18 electrical modules! Each Wiard module has the functionality of numerous modules, it would take a very large modular system to do what this very compact system is capable of and even then it probably wouldn't have the audiophile-type sound quality that these WIARD modules produce!

On top of all that, the WIARD system is a work of visual art. In an effort to encourage experimentation and exploration of this instrument, the visual elements of the WIARD synthesizer were created by a design team of professional artists and students who researched a visual appearance that is equally welcoming to all genders and ages. This is a highly uncommon musical instrument."
You can find more info on the individual modules on the Wiard website.

Anyone know what those little jumper looking things on the bottom shot are?

Update: a couple of people have written in to call out it's a small gridded vent. That's just some solder points on the PCB.

KORG PS-3200 Polyphonic Modular Synth-1977

images via this auction

"KORG PS-3200 Programmable Polyphonic Synthesizer from Musik Studio! This is a sound monster, perhaps one of the last amazing analogue synths from the 70ties!

Hans Zimmer used it as well as Keith Emerson in Nassau or J.M.Jarre in Paris. So,its working and in good condition, got it from Germanys greatest dance performer til nowadays. But there are some faults, one key of the keyboard ,the G3 is dead completely(think only the key is damaged and gets no contact) and there are two voices from the 48 damaged, the D and E, but its polyphonically so its damaged in all octaves. But the sound from signal Generator 2 fills that out,so you can play it but on the missing keys the sound gets thinner and in the higher ranges there s a high frequent sound on the missing keys. There was a upgrade kit for the voices from Touched by Sound in Nürnberg, about 180 Euros i think, but don t know if that is still available! Anyway ,its a great machine,we only used it the last years as sample source for our EMU E IV s. And there s a great experimental field using the temperamental adjust knobs to play with different scales ,not mentioning the sound, its absolutely amazing. And the amplitude modulation even creates sounds like human voice etc Of course the PS-3010 polyphonic Keyboard is included with joystick and patchcords for modulating the filters etc and theres a second 60 pin connector included to sync to your second PS-3200 or 3100. That keyboard weights about 10 kg ,the PS 35 kg,so i have to send in two packages,so hava look for shipping costs,Germany about 35-40 all together,Europe about 65-70 with Iloxx. Think a copied manual must sleep in the dephth of my studio rooms but without guarantee!

SPECS: 48 Voices
Oscilators(here called signal generator) 2VCO per voice
Misc. 7 band EQ
Filter 24 db lowpass filter with resonance
VCA ADSR Envelope
Keyboard 48 keys
Memory 16 Patches,battery puffered
Control CV/ GATE
DATE 1977
Value 300 made worldwide,about 3-4000 pounds

So, at the end the memory has 16 sounds but really weird,i think it s the battery which is low, i never used the memory because i like to experiment and thats the sense of such machine. And i forgot, for editing you have to pull the knobs of that section for example the filter knob, etc etc, the machine is in good condition only the wooden sides would need some polishing."

Korg PE-1000 Polyphonic Ensemble keyboard 1976

images via this auction

"Rare and precious example of one of the first truly polyphonic synthesizers in the world."

images mirrored here

Update via Milo Johnson in the comments: "That's odd. Both of mine have wood fascias on the body of the synth, and I have never seen one that was all-black like this."

Update via Frank: "both my PE-1000s “had/have” (meaning: sold the first, missed it, bought the second) black Tolex all around with no wood showing. My second one must be quite late, as it also has the all-plastic MS-20 style knobs rather than the older style with the aluminum skirts. "

KORG SE-500 analog tape echo + synth cv

images via this auction
"KORG SE-500. Designed like the Korg MS-20, it is the most powerful tape echo ever made, with external cv controls...amazing! It is very good for guitarrists or synth & DUB master maniacs. Five playback heads give a variety of effects from simulated reverb to a 1.5 second maximum long delay. With the SOS (sound on sound) feature, you can even double up on yourself and play on top of a whole passage. Controls including effect switches and tape speed are voltage controlled to allow remote control via outboard units or synthesizer." Note: Be sure to read all auction details if you are considering this one. Same goes for all auction posts.

"Here is a very old modular mixer system with tone and reverb module: EMS RIM ELA."

Update: The company that made these is RIM from Germany, and the product is called the EMS ELA.

STARKEY HEARING SCIENCE LAB

images via this auction
"STARKEY HEARING SCIENCE rare modular analog laboratory system, Built in 1977. It is not a common synthesizer, not a classic, but a test synth laboratory where you can make very strange sounds and many combinations between his particular features: 3 VCO's with CV (not standard control voltage), 1 buzzer LFO, 3 FIlters, 4 attenuators, 1 output limiting, 1 inverter, 1 phase control, 1 wavefor clipper, 2 mixers, 2 gates control with rise fall adsr and 2 Gate IN, 1 white / pink noise, 1 EXTERNAL input where you can process any type of mic or line signal and more other particular modules...1 gate programmer. This Starkey release has 3 VCO CV Inputs but the voltage is not standard, you can make anyway awesome modulations! It has also 3 enhanced killer filters that the normal Starkey release hasn't and 2 GATE inputs modification (the two jacks of the external switch) so you can trig the two Gates rise fall adsr..nice! Look very nice, similar to EMS VCS3, see the 15 auctions pics. In this auction are included also some patch cords and his Original manual!! I have released some demos on youtube: <previously posted here>"

Vintage EMS Synthi bundle

Note: the watermarks do kind of kill these shots for wallpaper, but aside from that they are good and the seller sent them in, so they are going up. If you are interested in looking at these up close, they work.

BTW keep an eye out for the next post going up.

"extremly rare Original EMS Synthi A in nice conditions + the EMS DKII oscillator keyboard & cable + Midi to synthi interface. All Matrix patch pins are present and all in like new conditions. I have tried it and It is perfect working conditions like the keyboard and the interface. This synthi A is not a reproduction but original from EMS and the panel is cream color."

Vintage Powertran 8x Modular Effects

images via this auction
"Here is a very big modular custom multitap delay system composed by 8 powerful vintage Powertran delay. I bought this system in the past from a large analog recording studio in perfect working order but without knobs....It is a minor shape problem can you can solve with every knobs standard type.. I tried it and each module is a cool SAMPLER delay!! All the 8 units are working but I don't know how the other parameters works outside the delays. Working voltage 220 or 240 volts. It is very large and weight about 35 / 40 kilograms so the shipping & packing costs to Europe are of 60 euro about, To Italy about 35 euro" Inside a Powertran.
