MCA & Burzootie - Drum Machine (1985)

YouTube via alittletreasure
"MCA and Burzootie - Drum Machine
from Def Jam 12" .
Produced and Mixed by Jay Burzootie Burnett
Edited by The Latin Rascals"

via Inteliko
"Stumbled on this on youtube, MCA from Beasties rhyming about drum machines..vocals are so heartfelt by me in regard to drum machines..left me smitten. Got to here these lyrics, mention of an oberheim dmx and a lexicon space station also.

"Burzooties on the mix most of the time, he works on the machines but he doesnt really rhyme"...genius vox.., 5:57 of rhymes like these with a fat drum break and electrofied efx."

Update via casio hardcore in the comments: "Classic tune! Just FYI: Jay Burnett originally released this song back in 1982 under the artist name of "Drum Machine". The 12" has a lyrical version (presumably with Jay rhyming) and the instrumental version. The version he does with MCA a few years later is the same song, same concept, different lyrics and different sounds. If you dig this version then I suggest you hunt down the original version ;)"

Klee on MC-202

YouTube via synthdood
"Here is a tune I was working on recently. I wanted to see how the mc-202 would work with the EM Klee. As you can see it works well. The Klee is a bit fast for the mc-202's CPU and you can hear when the mc-202 cant quite track the Klee. The effect sounds really cool! I will be trying this more often."

Polymoog Coffee Table

via this auction

be sure to see these

"This is a one-of-a-kind Polymoog synthesizer coffee table. I created this a few weeks ago by building a coffee table into and around a real Polymoog synthesizer body from my parted out and non-functioning late model Polymoog (SN# 4075). It was a pain in the ass to do, not only the physical construction and time, but drawing up accurate panel and keyboard graphics and having them printed up on gloss laminated vinyl for a nice spill proof surface. I built in two drawers with inside dimensions of 13.75"x10.5"x1.75". Total table size is 46" wide, 22" deep, and 20.5" high. I listed it as new, because I built it just for the purpose of selling since I don't have a decent living room setting (had to drag it to somebody else's house for the photos).

If you're into synths, want an interesting conversation piece, want to own something that nobody else has, and want a great and functional coffee table at the same time, then this is the only chance to own this. Great for office lobby, waiting room, or home.

Roland SH3A

via this auction

"The Roland SH-3A is the best way and cheapest way to go if you like that 70's Roland Sound and classic styling and cant afford a Roland SH5, System 100 101/102 keyboard and expander which are the only other synths in the Roland family that all share the same styling

The Roland SH-3A is a synthesizer made in 1974. It is actually one of Roland's first analog synths and is distinct from all other analog synths for its ability to do additive synthesis, allowing the layering of five of its oscillators/waveforms. Though the oscillators cannot be independently tuned, just the fact that five waveforms can be layered, and at different levels, makes for a distinct and fat sounding synth. Along with this are several other features which set the SH-3A apart from other synths. The ability to use two independent LFOs (including sample and hold) to modulate the VCO, filter and VCA allow it to sound more like a modular synth. In fact the circuitry of the SH-3A was later used in Roland's System 700 and System 100 modular synths and they all share a very similar sound. There is also a nice sounding PWM (chorus) control on the 8' waveform and both white and pink (rare) noise for those old school synth swooshes a la OMD in "Electricity". Also the SH-3A contains several expressive controls like the glide button and built in ADSR curves allowing quick programming of bass, brass or lead sounds at the turn of a switch. The 24db filter (called "growl") is rich sounding, can go into self-oscillation at high resonant levels. Overall it's an extremely nice, organic sounding filter. Also the envelopes are super snappy -- this a real, discrete analog synthesizer we are talking about here!!! sample and hold function is my favorite
The Human League used the SH-3A to great effect on their first two albums Reproduction and Travelogue, and Vangelis and Kitaro have used it live and in the studio.

analoguesolutions offer a modular mod for the SH3A for only GDP149 installed (CV (1.2V/Oct), Gate, VCF CV ins. LFOx3, EGx3 CV outs. VCF audio in. VCOx4, Noisex2 audio outs) link here"

I'm making the exception for this one as the synth content if any is unknown as I put this up. According to the link title, this is from March 9, 1931 the source image.

I'm curious exactly what this petition refers to. If you look at 120 Years, you can see a number of electronic instruments that were out at the time including the Theremin, Theremin Chello, Trautonium, and the Ondes Matenot amongst others. Fascinating stuff.

Thanks goes to Mark for sending this one in.

It's the first thing I tried to paint...needless to say, I should've stopped at the light blue keys, but it doesn't look too bad.

Anyway... the mods are
- Starve pot [simulates dying batteries...low pitch, etc]
- Lead distortion pot
- Snare/hihat/bass distortion pot
- Bass drum distortion pot
- Chord distortion pot
- Warbly/wahwah switch
- Pulse 1 (fast) switch
- Pulse 2 (warbly/slow) switch

- Pitch up knob
- 5 Glitch switches (some cause short glitches with button presses, some longer with speech intertwined, some cause endless bouts of glitching with no prompting)
- 2 short loop buttons with on/off switches (distort/hold out current sound)
- Musical sound loop button with on/off switch (loops always at the same tempo/length. When bottom glitch switch engaged causes a new loop with every key press. Really fun feature)
- Electronic Satan switch (makes the thing speak like... an electronic Satan... SAY IT.)
- Added 1/4" output jack w/
- Green LED that flashes with audio activity
- speaker on/off siwtch
- reset switch"

"It's a guy, I forget his name, who makes a replacement CPU board for theKorg DW-8000 (won't work with the EX-8000). The new board gives you two part multi-timbral, splits, and new modulation routings."

I also believe it gives you a pretty large memory expansion.

"Subharmonic Field" a Folktek Instrument

images at this auction

Be sure to see the seller's other items.

"The Subharmonic Field is a smaller version of the Harmonic Field [You might remember the Harmonic Field from this video.]

This work has an obviously different sound with an emphasis on drone and noise whereas the harmonic field is a much more "harmonic" polyphonic work.

The touch points control filtering, resonance, distortion, bass boosting, noise and rhythmic alterations including some variations that play chaotic melody - abundant variations depending on which points are being touched together and how hard or soft.

It comes down to massaging the boards and creating dronescapes. After one has a feel for the various points, the most subtle movement will effect the waves.

In addition there is a natural decay associated with the primary waveform. The nature of the sound is fat and analog.

In terms of noise this piece is capable of being extrordinarily destructive, though this function is optional. Radio can be recieved and fed into the OSC..

The box was handcrafted with fine hardwood and the panel is etched. It has a 1/4" output, the lamp glows white and includes controls for pitch and volume."

EMS SYNTHI HI FLI

images here
"1973. (£180) £308
Designer: David Cockerell.
Industrial Design: Martin Holbrook.
A guitar treatment unit built as a console on a stand with two pedal controllers which could be routed as control voltages to any of the slider functions.

Main Controls and Effects (Left to right on control panel)

* Top Boost Slider to provide up to 30db boost at high frequencies. The output from this section goes to the Octave Shift, Sustained Fuzz and Ring Mod sections.
* Octave Shift Slider mixes in a Sub Octave signal.
* Buzz Switch adds high frequency overtones to the sub octave signal.
* Ring Mod Slider mixes in a signal an octave up when single notes are played or "ring modulated" effects on chords.
* Decay Rate Rotary control for the decay time of Ring Mod and Octave Shift signals.
* Sustain Fuzz Slider mixes variable upper harmonics.
* Attack Rate Rotary control varies the rise time of the sustained fuzz signal.
* Pedal Switches Each switch routes either the left or right pedal to voltage control the Slider above it. Each switch also has an inverted setting so that single pedal movements can produce complimentary effects.
* Solo/Strum Switch to alter the Hi-Fli's sensitivity to playing style.
* Bypass Mix Central Slider to blend the effects and original signal.
* Modulation Selector Rotary Switch selects: Slow Modulation range, Fast Modulation range, Rising Mod envelope, Falling Mod envelope, Rising Ramp and Falling Ramp.
* Treatment Selector Rotary switch selects: VIBRATO, PHASING 1, PHASING 2, WAA-WAA (single resonant peak), WAW-WAW (six resonant peaks) and MEOW (two sets of three peaks in opposite directions).
* Modulation Speed Slider to fine control the modulation rate.
* Modulation Ramp Time Slider to set ramp time between 0 and 5 seconds.
* Modulation Depth Slider controlling depth of modulation applied to Phase Filter.
* Frequency Shift Slider to bias the symmetry of modulation.

Mains powered: 100-135 or 200-260 Vac
Input Signal: 10mV (min) to 3V (max), 100kohm impedance.
Output Signal: -20dbm (min) to 0dbm (max).

With silly prices being paid for single fuzz boxes, treble-boosters, Univibes, even $5k for a Way Huge Super Puss delay, etc the opening bid is a steal considering the total functional design of this mammoth. So many possibilities exist for a vast number of unique, one of a kind sounds and textures, it's mind-numbing, but all repeatable. This box is deep and worth the dig. No special pick-ups necessary, no MIDI, just pure old school FAT analog bliss, and tracks exceptionally well.

Honestly, this makes everything else sound like toys, including number two, the $3K plus Ludwig phase II synthesizer(really a distant second IMHO).

The pre-amp design is excellent, and the boost you can get alone just in bypass mode sounds great. The filter section is potent, and will leave you stunned if you haven't heard one before(and if you think you can get close with a Small Stone/Micro Synth/wah pedal phaser and fuzz, think again).

This one features the growl switch which gives you a choice of two and three octave drops, greatly extending the capabilities of the filters. Additionally, with all the parameter options, everything can be mixed, treated, and dialed in, plus activated in real-time with the control pedals, that YOU are the only limitation--truly a mark of WAY forward thinking and design, and this is back in 1972!!

There has been what I believe to have been a factory added, and recommended modification(and I have general factory documentation from EMS to back this up) discretely done at the bottom center of the control panel to disengage the envelope function, giving you access to pre-process the filter section however you see fit.

Also, the top half of the completely ORIGINAL fiberglas enclosure was topically cosmetically fixed and painted to match closely to the bottom, and it was well done--reason being, there were no structural cracks, but a previous, possibly bored, demented and ignorant owner took what looked like from the many scars, a dremel tool to ruin much of the perimeter with mindless surface gashes, etc.

It now looks 1000x times better, really clean and original looking. I tried to show in the side shots, how the top is a bit lighter than the bottom(also due to aging of the pigment). Really, just want to be upfront, as you may not be able to tell from most of the pix.

That aside, when you plug in and start dialing up some sounds, you'll be too busy watching your jaw hit the floor.

Just for a point of reference David Cockerell designed many of great 70's Electro Harmonix classics, including the Talking pedal, Attack Decay, Microsynth, Small Stone, etc.

The Hi Fli has way better versions of those pedals(The Attack/Decay for example, and that is what the envelope function is about, and it can track full chords). You can also do ultra vocal, wicked multi-variations of the $1k plus Colorsound Dipthonizer as well.

The other amazing aspect of this unit is it's clean, unprocessed phasing capabilities, really outstanding on their own, and it also has an amazing vibrato to boot. In this regard, as a stand alone studio processor, it works wonders on vocals, keyboards, drums, especially cymbals-really anything you care to run through it.

Yes, this was used more prominently by Steve Hackett(Genesis), and by Todd Rundgren(Utopia), as well as David Gilmour and Ritchie Blackmore. Here's a cool Youtube link of Genesis from 1976, and you can see the Hi Fli on the side of the stage about 46 seconds in for about 8 seconds: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRerIDAEn8M ,(though I don't think he's using it for the song).

Many of these artists used the Hi Fli for singular features that don't really convey the dramatic and more extreme capabilities of this unit. I will try to post some sound clips before auction end to illustrate this.

Of course everyone in this camp knows about the Hi Fli from Analog man's guide to Vintage effects book. Here's an update from the author Tom Hughes, from Premier Guitar(and notice one Hi Fli has the same mod, not so discretely done): http://digital.premierguitar.com/premierguitar/200811/?pg=142 (click to enlarge pages, click inner arrows to turn the page), good article.

Only around 350-400 of these were ever made, and they are getting very scarce, let alone in this condition and with the original pedals. These will only increase in value(if you can find one) and are worth every penny."
