MMM Accomplished

George Mattson wrote in to let me know that today marks the day the Mattson Mini Modular "Phoenix Series" is complete. The final filter and updated noise source have been completed and installed on the first run of production units. They are currently running on a four day burn in where they will be left on and inspected prior to shipping. If you ordered one, the wait is over.

April 1, 2007 to December 9, 2008. A year and a half for a full system from concept to completion. Not bad for one dude on a tight budget. Note the first post went up on September 15 2007.

World's 1st music video shot on an iPhone -- Newteknowledge by GOSHone

YouTube via goshone. via Scott and on the front page of Digg - Digg it!
If this indeed is the first video to go down in history made with the iPhone, it's cool to see the Moog Little Phatty and Akai MPC2000 in it.
"Shot entirely on a jailbroken iPhone 3G using Cycorder. Edited using After Effects, since Final Cut didn't like the resolution from Cycorder. This is a song off the debut album by GOSHone, "ctrl_alt_ego". Visit my site for more info.

The JH-5

http://www.jhaible.de/jh5/jh5.html

"MOTM-compatible, "Moog-Style" Modular Synthesizer

I never thought I would build another monophonic modular synthesizer after the JH-3. But then I started a panel of MOTM modules, mostly for post-processing the signals from other synthesizers, and of course I could never stop to experiment with electronic music circuits, both reverse-engineering the "classics" and trying ideas of my own. After a period of building "Moog Style" circuits (mainly VCAs and VCFs) and experiments with various VCO ideas, it was time to put all these veroboard circuits into some enclosure."

Monomachine FM Jam

YouTube via bigcitymusic
Here's a little ditty using the Elektron MonoMachine as a polyphonic MIDI module. We've made a basic patch with one of the FM machines and set the MonoMachine to poly mode. The Dave Smith MoPho is playing our bass line and the MachineDrum (also by Elektron) is providing the drum sounds. You can achieve interesting and bigger kick sounds (or any sound!) by layering.

Essentially you can program one pattern sequence, let's say kick 1, and have it trigger another, kick 2, at the same time. Maybe you like one kick drum sound for it's attack and another for it's low end. With this trigger function you can try out different combinations without having to reprogram the rhythm line over and over.

The MachineDrum is controlling the Mopho and the SFX-60 via MIDI."

KORG Trident MKII

via this auction

"Brief description of the Trident: This synthesizer is a polyphonic, true analogue synth. Unlike the Korg Trident MKI, it has four banks of eight memories for the synth section (as opposed to 2x8), an additional VCO and envelope generator. Not to mention improved stability in tuning and other undesirable issues which the MKI suffered. This is in part due to the improved power and cooling systems (the MKII has a big heat sink fin on the back).

The Korg Trident got its name from the three part architechture. The synthesizer is the first part, Brass section the second and Strings the third. The programmable memories can only save synthesizer patches, the brass and string patches cannot be saved. The synth section has two VCOs, a VCF section and an envelope generator for both the VCF and VCA sections. The Trident has a nice Flanger effect that can be applied to any one of the sections. It can be configured to several diffent key assign modes so that the synth, brass and string sections can be played seperately or in unison. It also has a pitch bend and 'trill' joystick. With all parts combined you can get some really nice atmospheric, sweeping pad sounds. The strings are really nice - true analogue warmth, a 'bowing' and 'vibrato' effect can be added, and the brass section can be triggered in several different modes." Inside a KORG Trident.

Circuit Bent Cigarettes

via this auction
Details:
"Atari Punk Console AKA Forrest Mims' Stepped Tone Generator.
What a fantastic stocking stuffer!
I built this atari punk console into a metal American Spirit cigarette pack. I tweaked the circuit for extra tasty bass. It fits nicely in the palm of your hand, with your thumb on the trigger. The lower knob is pitch, the upper controls the "steps" or "range". I added a 1/4 inch line out. I put a little speaker in the bottom so you can play it "on the go" (though it is small and fairly thin sounding). The LED at the end of his pipe is ultra bright. This video shows me playing it through a boomerang delay/looping pedal. Runs on 1 9 volt battery"

ANALOG SYNTH RUSSIAN VCF FILTER

"Russian based VCF filters with a really sour Rezonance Character. It is an External All In One unit that is self powered with a 12v AC wall adapter. It has an onboard LFO section and Pre Amp to amplify lower sound signals. This was intended for the Modualar Synthesizer People, but it can be used with Line level signals also. It can also handle a guitar/bass directly connected. It can easily Self Resonate."

Digitana Micro Acid Drone as a mod source into moog LP

YouTube via DigitanaUK
"Like the Micro Punk Console, the Micro Acid Drone can also be used as a modulation source for synths with CV inputs. As you will hear in this clip the results are quite different (a bit more subtle) the pedal is being pressed on and off to demonstrate the contrast between normal and modulated, many interesting results can occur.

Obscuresounds - Here to Rock

another track from Obscuresounds

You might remember Obscuresounds from this post. If you haven't checked these out, please do. Aside from the synth content, they are fascinating in that the samples used are from as early as the 60s. These aren't simple one shot samples but core pieces of the tracks. It's amazing how well they translate into more modern tracks.

Synth content:
"The Octave CAT took pride and place for the build-up moments at 0:43 and 2:00. The synths filters were just dirty enough to poke through the mix with all the drumming. A favourite trick of mine is placing synths through the Roland RE-501 tape echo - as I increased the LFO control on the pitch for the CAT, I would also increased feedback on the RE-501 before finally hitting the speed control right at the end of the track."

Purple Faced Future Retro FR-777

via this auction

"Its capable of all the stock 303 acid sounds but can also do a lot more besides. With two oscillators, FM, 3 and 7 pole filters and this synthesizer is capable of creating an insane variety of sounds, its seriously deep. On top of that it also has an excellent built in sequencer with midi and cv in and out and realtime control. Its exactly the same as the now discontinued Mobius sequencer (minus V/Hz output) and is great for controlling older cv synthesizers. There were less than 700 of these made and this is one of first 30, hand built by the designer Jared Flickinger, and finished in purple. It has a more aggressive filter overdrive section that only appeared in the first few units and is Jared's personal favourite, sounds beautiful."
