"ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico-- December 22, 2008. Five12 Inc. today announces the release of Numerology 2 for Mac OS X. Numerology is a modular music sequencing and audio plugin environment which uses an innovative approach to electronic music composition based on the techniques of step sequencing and pattern sequencing, augmented by a modular environment that encourages improvisation and experimentation.
Numerology 2's module library is centered around a core set of sequencing modules, each targeted for a specific task: The MonoNote sequencer for monophonic lead and bass melodies, the PolyNote and MatrixSeq modules for polyphonic sequencing and the eight-track DrumSeq for drum programming.
There are also a pair of 'component' sequencers, the CV (control value) and Gate sequencer modules, which can be used for a technique called Discrete Sequencing, whereby users can create melodic lines by independently sequencing the individual components of notes: pitches, rhythms and dynamics. This modular approach to step sequencing maintains the immediacy that step sequencing is known for, while greatly increasing the range of compositional techniques the composer can employ.
A full suite of companion modules can be mixed and matched with the sequencers to expand their capabilities, including LFO's, Envelopes, CV Mixers, and MIDI generators and processors. Another key feature of Numerology is the ability of the user to quickly and easily apply modulation to almost any parameter with just a few mouse clicks. Application of this type of automation to musical parameters such as tempo, pitch intervals and pattern length opens up many new opportunities for creative composition.
In order to provide structure for this environment, Numerology's modules live within a series of virtual equipment racks, called stacks. Typically there is one stack for each musical part in a composition. Each stack maintains an independent set of presets for its modules, which enables a very flexible way of building pattern-based compositions.
This release of Numerology 2 also includes a pair of sample-based synthesis modules, a polyphonic AudioSample module and an eight-part DrumKit module. Although simple in design, their integration with Numerology affords them some unique benefits, including the ability for the user to customize their settings for each preset pattern, the easy application of modulation to any parameter, and individual outputs for each part in the DrumKit.
Numerology 2 requires an Apple Macintosh computer with a CPU speed of 1Ghz or better, and 1GB or more of RAM, running Mac OS X version 10.4.11 or later, and a screen resolution of 1024x768 or better. Numerology 2 is currently available for purchase from the Five12 Web Store for an introductory price of $99 (US). After January 4th, the price will be $119 (US).
Features of Numerology 2 Include:
* A modular step sequencing music composition environment.
* MIDI-based Note Sequencing modules for monophonic, polyphonic and drum sequencing.
* Flexible CV & Gate Sequencer modules for 'component-based' sequencing.
* GrooveClock module for building custom grooves.
* A variety of analog-synthesis-style modules for generating and processing streams of control (CV) data, including LFO's, Envelopes and XY controllers.

"Not much as far as glitches, the unit crashes and takes a while to boot up. Added two 555 LFOs with various patching directly to the control potentiometers and the joystick. Gives you more analog warble effects. Best feature is a HOLD switch for the Audition Button.

8 Envelope Generators
These Envelopes can be linked together to make an 8 stage sequence!
When the EGs are linked to form a sequence (loop switches down), the Attack and Release knobs alter the timing of each step,
so you can have some long steps and some shorter steps to put some swing to your rhythm.
They can also be looped like LFOs.
Loop Switch Up.
They even make good Bass Tone Oscillators.
Patch Envelope Out to an Audio Input.
8 LowPass Filters 24dB, 4-pole LowPass Filters. Self-Oscillating into musical sine waves when the Resonance Knob is turned up.
Patch in an envelope for auto-wah and filter sweep effects or Deep Space Bass Drum Sounds.
8 VCAs Patch in a looping envelope for vibrato. Play melodies with the buttons when the Filters are Oscillating.
8 VC PANs Patch in a looping envelope for auto-pan or sequenced pans with multiple Linked Envelopes.

Roland SH-101 with MGS-1
via this auction
Details:
"Roland SH-101 preserved for 20 years in it's original box. I'd list this item as NEW but due to the age of the synthesizer, it's used. But it's only had one owner before me. And that owner NEVER used it. The box shows some wear from moves. I've tested it and it's in 100% working condition with not a single blemish on it. It's museum quality. The Mod Grip is still it's original box. Obvious by the photos. Only opened to take photos. Rarely does a 101 come on the market with this quality (new) and condition (new). Also included is the original carrying case. Another rare treat. The wall wart didn't function from storage.. So I'm including a compatible one. And works great."

"MFB-503
(jas_review005)
A review video from justastudio
This little plastic box is awesome and evil!
I recorded the MFB 503 and without thinking about it I created a drumnbass inspired track.
All drums are un-compressed and live programmed. I wish I tweaked the beast (MFB 503) a little bit more to show what its capable of. This machine is so thick and rich in the sound Im impressed!
Samples are from CNN, CNBC, TMC and a bee (stuck in the window) pitched down.
Simple bass sound was created using Zebra (VSTi) and its nothing more than a little cutoff tweaking.
There are some minor panning errors and some volume adjustment on certain drum parts which could be much better.
Reverb, EQ, compression and limiter added in the final mix/mastering.
Please keep in mind that this track was entirely done for showing what the MFB-503 is capable of.

Linn LM-1 Drum Machine
via this auction
"Linn LM-1 drum machine, serial # 365. These are relatively rare, as only approximately 500+ were ever built. This model was the first commercially-available EPROM-based digital drum machine with 8-bit sampled sounds. Designed by Roger Linn in the late 1970’s, this drum machine holds a place in history, basically laying the foundation for sample-based sounds within popular music. The concept and execution was so popular that it spawned a large number of imitators by Oberheim, Prophet, EMU, Alesis, Kawai, Korg, Roland, et al.

HAL 9000's voice played 200 times slower - Photosounder
YouTube via Photosounder
"http://photosounder.com
We first load into Photosounder a sound of HAL 9000's voice, which is turned into an image, and we first play it back into a sound at its original rate. Then the Time resolution knob is turned down a notch and the image-sound is played about 3 times slower, without any change in pitch.
Then the Time resolution is turned down some more until the playback rate for the image-sound is 200 times slower than the original, and a strange and eerie soundscape emerges from the man's extremely slowed down voice."
Listening to Music Upside-Down
"In this video, we first load a sound into Photosounder, which is converted into an image. We first listen to that image by turning it back into a sound, then, by pressing buttons 180° and FLIP, we flip it vertically, as to make the image appear upside-down, and we turn that upside-down image into a sound, an 'upside-down' version of the original sound.
What it does is invert the notes of the tune, which creates a different sounding tune, but it also inverts the overtones, so the instruments also sound different. This effect is unique to Photosounder, which is the only program out there that treats sounds and music entirely as images.
Music from the South Park episode, Gnomes."
More info on Photosounder
"Photosounder is a one-of-a-kind image-sound editing program. It is unique in that it opens images and sounds indiscriminately, treats and processes them as images, and synthesizes them as sounds. Sounds, once turned into images, can be powerfully modified to achieve effects and results that couldn't be obtained in any other way, while images of all sorts reveal the infinite kinds of otherworldly sounds they contain. Ultimately, knowing how sounds look and how images sound, you'll be able to create images that sound like what you want to hear, or like what you couldn't imagine to hear."
