"Congratulations also go to Paul Maddox (VacoLoco) introducing his project GorF 019, Paul's words:
"GorF will be 100% open source (GPLv3), the schematics are already available on my site, and a prototype PCB (100mm by 80mm) has been ordered, once I've built it using this PCB and confirmed it works, the PCB files and code will be published so others can build one and tinker with the code to suit their own needs... I hope that by giving these projects to the community it will encourage people to develop their ideas and create new things I can't even imagine!"

So, what's Zoybar?
"Zoybar is a unique platform for developing innovative music instruments and effects.

The Zoybar components provide research and development tools as
a sustainable prototype platform.

The same modular parts can be assembled as different instruments, can be changed during the performance and also be mounted with numerous special effects, just by adding and changing their position across the profile groves.

We're looking forward to see these skills integrated with the Zoybar hardware."

Pixelh8 "Obsolete?"

via the Pixelh8 email list:
"I am very excited.
Recently I Pixelh8 have had the good fortune, with the help of The National Museum of Computing and the Performing Rights Society Foundation, to have a huge music project of mine funded. The project is to write a piece of music composed from sounds from some of the rarest and earliest computers and computing devices in the world to be performed at the World War II code breaking centre Bletchley Park, Milton Keynes on March 20th and 21st 2009.

The project entitled “Obsolete?” will make use of machines such as Colossus Mark 2 world’s first programmable, digital, electronic, computing device used for code breaking in World War II and probably one of, if not the most significant computer in the world. Another computer to be used is Elliot 803 from 1960, a giant machine that has only 4k!!! ithink it’s one of only three left in the world and I love it!

The blogs leading up to it have now also been declassified and can be accessed by going here http://pixelh8.co.uk/category/obsolete/

On the flipside the piece will also feature several other commonplace computing devices that have either been discarded or branded as “Obsolete?” as time moved on, so yes I will be using the ubiquitous BBC Micro too.

This will be chip tune music but unlike any other you have ever heard.

These machines have been restored to working order and in some cases completely reconstructed by volunteers and researchers at TNMOC, and I am honoured to be associated with these hard working men and women and the unique history of Bletchley Park.

This is to be one of many computer music related projects I am hoping to bring to the museum and I am very, very excited. I strongly recommend you go and visit The National Museum of Computing in the meantime, but you won’t get any more information about “Obsolete?” just yet, as it is classified information.

Drum machine Orgy Update

I'm obviously smiling as I post this. :) I think this might get Title of the Year. Definitely for the year to date.

That said, you can find more info on the orgy here.

Hmm... I wonder what this will do to my Google ads. They are supposed to scrape the site and post relevant ads based on keywords. Orgy, orgy, orgy. Hot synths here! Hot dripping analog synthesizers!

BeatMaker 1.3.2 update is now available

"This update brings support for importing the Noise.io iPhone Synthesizer sounds directly into BeatMaker, as well as various general improvements."

The interesting note here of course is "integration" of different iPhone apps. I put integration in quotes because you can't run the apps at the same time for active/live integration.

Oberheim Perf/X Systemizer

via this auction
"The SYSTEMIZER is Master MIDI control center and memory bank that allow you to create and store a wide variety of MIDI keyboard (or other instrument) setups that can be as simple or elaborate as you want.
The SYSTEMIZER also allows extensive PEDAL control - four locally thru rear panel phone jacks, and 4 via MIDI.
The SYTEMIZER allows you to recall any setup between Master and Slave instantly and performs many functions that instruments cannot do on their own. For example the SYSTEMIZER permits multiple SPLITS even if your instrument doesn't have that capability.
Layering, crossfading, fixed or floating split point, mono or polyphony and more can be stored in one of the 32 Setups. A port for an optional memory card is provided. If you use many MIDI instruments, sequencer, computer, FX and more, the Systemizer will do things you never thought possible, or only wished you could.

Note this is the one from this video.
"The MS 10 may be smaller brother to the MS 20 but it still has much to offer and still has that MS Korg sound especially if you cant afford the MS 20 ! This legendary sound mainly comes from the filter and its controls frequency cut off (low pass filter) and peak (resonance ,Q ) . Its brings in such a natural warm harmonic distortion that cannot be emulated by software just like the rich harmonic content of a violin cannot be replicated digitally. This is analog , this is what its all about
The patch bay and external in add another aspect of experimentation and sound exploration."

Modular Synth Lissajous Scope Graphics

YouTube via dkimcg
"Based on the math behind a Lissajous curve using a Cwejman stereo ringmod. You can patch a similar thing with the sine waves of a quadrature oscillator (offset 90 degrees), and 4 additional oscillators (self-oscillating resonant filters included), but they don't have to be sine waves. The broken lined "flowers" are saws and squares. The audio is filtered through a PlanB Model 12 filter that's being modulated by one of the subo-scillators (the oscillator that's synced to the master oscillator that only modulates the filter and syncs one of the "audio" oscillators). Lots of sync in the patch...

Sorry about the lousy camerawork. I can't find the mount for my camera to connect to the tripod."

MIDIbox SID V2 Bassline Demo

YouTube via ucapps
"The making of a new bassline demo with MIDIbox SID V2. This major update can conrol up to 8 SID soundchips with four PIC microcontrollers, connected to a CAN network. There are 4 dedicated sound engines for Leads/Basslines/Drums and polyphonic multi sounds, which can run on any PIC core as desired.

In this demo, four 8580 SIDs are used (...but my own box is fully stuffed, it just wasn't required to use the remaining ones)
The first core plays drum sequences, the second core two independent bassline sequences.

The sequences are interactively selected from a MIDI keyboard, and sound parameters like CutOff/EnvMod/Decay are changed with faders/joystick/Control Surface.

The Audio Output of the SID which plays the lower octave bassline is feedbacked to the Audio Input for increased resonance and distortion.

You listen to pure and unique SID sound - and it is sequenced live! Only external EQs, compression and delay effects have been added.

How to sync a Juno 60 arpeggio with stuff you've already got

How to sync a Juno 60 arpeggio with stuff you've already got from 6am on Vimeo.
"So what you do is feed a short, loud sound into the Arpeggio Clock In of a Juno 60 (or 6, I assume) - and whenever the sound is played it will trigger the next note in the Juno's Arpeggiatorater buffer. Don't think it matters terribly what the sound is - I'm using a rimshot here - the key to the sound is that it's loud and short and bippy.

Course the best thing about this is being able to trigger the arpeggio irregularly, and also if you feed LONG sounds in then you get weird commodore 64 style smearings as the notes trigger too fast - which is quite good too.

All in all I can't believe I didn't try this already. I'm not that clever ysee - real credit goes to em411.com"

"Novation Xio 25
(JAS_review0067
A review video from justastudio

Novation has always been one of my darlings in the world of synthetic sounds.
This little synthesizer is much more than plastic box with sounds. Its also a soundcard and midi controller. Great for travelling purposes or in the low-budget home recording studio.
The video shows me playing live and running through some of the presets programmed by various top artists such as: Ferry Corsten, Jamiroquai and Roots Manuva. Minor tweaking and pitching.
You need to like the sound of Novation and dont expect any analogish sound from this little beast.
Furthermore its not build like a 70s synth which means the knobs and the case itself is a bit too plastic for my taste.
But I was (still am) impressed. The soundcard is far better than M-audio, EMU 0202 and other low-budget recording gear. It only needs USB power to run and on top of that a 3 osc synthesizer with a decent sound.

Value for money.

EQ, compression and limiter added in the final mix/mastering.
(Some clipping might occur)

Please keep in mind that this track was entirely done for showing what sounds you can get from the Novation Xio synthesizer.

Anyone know where this event was?

Update via Konketsu in the comments: "analogassailant is correct. We had this happen in Vancouver at a community space called "Here on Earth" that was located in the industrial section of East Vancouver, and it was organized by several members of a now defunct electronic music collective called "The Black Hole Club". I found these and other pictures while I was cleaning up one of my hard drives, and I thought that I would upload it so I could share it on http://www.livepa.org/board and I didn't expect it to show up here.

We had somewhere around 30 machines show up and the idea was to get them all synced up to one clock source. Sort of a "hey, can we do this?" exercise more than a musical or recording one. It did work, but as you can imagine the sound was godawful and given the number of machines there obviously was a lot of slop in the timing. The hard part was actually getting a clock that each of the machines could recognize; there were a number of pre-MIDI boxes that had a wide variety of differing clock requirements so it was no small feat getting everything to talk to one another.

Before we did this, we had to define what a "drum machine" was, and we settled on a definition like "a stand alone hardware device that is capable of generating simultaneous and polyphonic sounds that are primarily percussive in nature and is capable of playing back those sounds in a preset or user-defined pattern, and is intended for use as a backing rhythm track source alone", or something to that effect which excluded MPC's, sequenced monosynths/modulars and workstations/grooveboxes.

Like I said before, it was really a try-it-and-see type thing, rather than a musical or recording exercise, as well as a great excuse to get together, geek out on drum machines and drink beer. Good times!

Thanks for posting it."
