GSi Genuine Soundware and Instruments

This is one of those I can't believe I haven't posted this before posts. GSi makes a number of quality soft synths and effects, many of which are actually free. If you haven't checked them out yet, make the time to do so.

genuinesoundware.com

this one sent my way via Metasonix
"Apparently, General Soundware has made some of their plug-ins free of charge, including the WatKat, TimeVerb, and Legacy Plugins. Honestly don't understand why people pay hundreds of dollars for old-instrument-simulation plugins, when stuff like this is available. Even their costliest plugins, the VB3 and MrRay73, are only 49 euros."

And turn the knob under tune to OSC 3 PW 64
On your low pass Ladder Filter make sure 123 are selected
Now lets move over to the filter envelope
Set a to 1.9 d to 349 s to -48.2 and R to 705
On the amp envelope set a to 1.2 d to 349 s to 0 and r to 1.09
Now we are going to make the sound change for your modulation wheel, for source go to performance and click mod wheel, set the amount to 64, and for destination go to filter 1 filter frequency
Now add a BV512 Vocader switch the fft knob to 4 band and switch the knob from vocader to equalizer
Switch the decay to 127

Weird Sound Generator

YouTube via kipptumor
"This is how I dealt with Ray Wilson's Weird Sound Generator kit from musicfromouterspace.com. Ray offers all kinds of cool kits from DIY synth modules to a 16-step analog sequencer. I mounted mine in a Lindberg plastic human skull model kit. We use the thing in our music by running it into the audio-in jack of the Korg Electribe. It can be tuned a bit at least, otherwise it is simply chaos."

ELGAM 3049 Analog Organ Keyboard

via this auction

making the exception on this one for the inside shot.
"rare vintage Elgam Model 3049 Keyboard Made in Italy.

Layout includes "Flute,Clarinet,Oboe,Reed,Spinet and Cathedral" settings..you may use them individually or all together. The 'cathedral' setting goes default through the reverb and is added to all other settings, you may use it also stand alone with no other settings on.
Effects are "Vibrato,Staccato(like a backwards vibrato kinda),Repeat and Reverb". They are all controlled with a speed pot and then reverb is controlled by a pot as well into the final mix. The unit has a reverb cage inside. There's an input for instrument use and it works well as the unit has an actual amplifier along with two oval speakers for onboard use inside. Also has main output.
The bass's grey keys are affected by the settings and effects but also have there own "Manual Bass" section with bass level pot and two on/off switches for "soft" and "sharp"(this later section does not affect the white/black notes section."

"This is a simple demo of the Firstman SQ-01 manufactured by Multivox in 1981. It requires that 2 bars be programmed, so if you were wondering why I repeated the first four notes 8 times you now know why.

As for control, it has 2 filter controls for Cutoff Frequency and Resonance, 2 knobs for Oscillator - Fine and Frequency, and 3 knobs for Sequence Control - Tempo/ Release/Bar (2/4/8/12/16). There is a knob for Sustain and one for Volume. 2 envelopes - Saw and Square and the option for 6/8."

The Story Of The BBC Radiophonic Workshop and the Oramics Optical Synthesizer

via Steve Marshall:

"I wrote a 12 page article about the history of the Radiophonic Workshop for the April 08 Sound On Sound and it's now free to read on-line.

As a result of that article being printed, Graham Wrench got in touch - he's the engineer who'd built the prototype Oramic synth for Daphne Oram in the 60's. The current Feb 09 SOS has my new article about Graham and his story. Here's a link, but only to a preview.

Ray White has just put up a new gallery of Radiophonic Workshop pics - some not seen before; http://whitefiles.org/rwg/"

Also see Steve Marshall's SURROUNDHEAD for scans from 70's Studio Sound magazines.

Prophet 5 Rev 2 Test

via Scott Metzger on AH:
"Just had a Kenton Kit installed on my Prophet. So happy with it now. Unison is very, very thick. Does anyone know about patches acting weird on it? Some old patches on it seem to not allow proper tweaking, but if I go to the default panel then overwrite the patch all is good, and I never have issue on that bank or patch. Was hoping someone could shed some light..

Oh, and here is a test I did if anyone wants to hear..

mp3 here

Using a Jomox 888, and a Geiger Counter for Bit distortion on the snare. If anyone gets a chance to pick that pedal up, you can grab it from AH. Very very cool pedal and it adds a nice tone to the Snare that is pretty week on the 888. I hope Jomox releases a new drum machine with a new snare. I think the Jomox would be the best drum machine hands down if it had more of a punch with the snare."

Pulse Feedback

Pulse Feedback from Ernst on Vimeo.
"Quick and raw footage of my oscilloscope getting input from a patch in my doepfer a100 system.

Patch is roughly:
Pseudo-Random Pulses made with 2 LFO's feeding into an A149-1 Source of Uncertainty.
Output (via mixer- see later) of which is filtered by an A128 fixed filterbank which is amplified afterwards by an A119 pre amp.
Output of that is fed back via an A130 mixer into the A128.
Feedback point is crucial for the sound! Actually this feedback functions as the resonance factor of the A128.

Other speciality of this patch is that I actually use the A149-1 as an audio source..."

"Bob Moog Archives on Display, NAMM Museum of Making Music Exhibit, a Sneak Preview at the Moogseum and much, much more!

Winter NAMM, held in Anaheim, CA each mid- January, is always a blast for the Bob Moog Foundation. There we meet up with old friends, make great industry contacts and generally spread the word about the Foundation’s progress. This year we had much to report! As you all know, we have been working steadily to preserve and protect Bob’s imperiled archives over the past year and a half. Our goal has always been to share these archives through exhibits, and eventually through out own museum."

Quad VCF for Casio SK samplers!

via gmeredith on this electro-music.com thread where you will find more info. "Well, I've just completed a huge project, which has been on my mind for a while now, ever since finding this forum - to build a true polyphonic, 4-voice VCF module, with CV input and resonance, running off 9V DC.

It has taken me about 3 months of spare time to get this thing researched, thought out, breadboarded, built and optimised for the Casio SK sampler keyboards (I have an SK8). But it has finally come!!

Below are the results of my efforts.

But I wanted specially to post this message, in order to say a big THANK YOU to everyone in this DIY community; for both directly and indirectly helping me with this project by the way of advice, and links to circuits and information.

I especially want to thank Tim Escobedo, who designed the Q&D VCF, from which this quad VCF is wholly adapted from. Using it as a starting block got me half way there in one hit! Thanks to all the people here who put me on to it!!

I've written up a complete illustrated guide on how to make this quad VCF, which I call the "PHAT PHILTER BANK", and how to set it up for the Casio SK series keyboards. The guide is here, at the bottom of the page here:

http://www.jz-server.de/forum2/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?559
[Update: this original link appears to be dead. This updated link was added to the thread. Be sure to check the electro-music.com thread linked above for updates.]

There is also on that page an mp3 example of one of the SK presets with the filter applied. Makes the humble SK-8 sound like a real analog synth!!

You can also make it as a stand-alone unit, or adapt it to another type of keyboard, although another keyboard may or may not be able to take advantage of the full features that this VCF unit has - such as CV input. The SK samplers have separate internal envelope CV signals for their VCA's, which is particularly useful for driving this VCF. The guide shows you how to set it up in various ways.

Again, thank you all SO MUCH for sharing the knowledge that enabled this to happen!!

Cheers, Graham"
