1985 digital sound voice synthesizer demo AN ORIGINAL DISK

YouTube via VironCybernet
"In 1985 I wrote this in BASIC and a few bytes of ASM for 4 different brands of computer and if I was known for doing anything in high school, this was it, the only thing mentioned about me in my yearbook. I would also leave these disks at computer stores and computer club. Although it is now known that the synthesizer is (capable of) higher quality than MP3, my means of programming sounds into it in the 1980's never had a reasonable explanation for why it worked at all, (and I now know that it simply didn't!,) and in the 1990's other unique methods were tried while this one was considered to be the worst kind of digital sound ever invented. The disk "apparently" has male female and robotic TTS voices, 2 songs, and a few talking games on it. But it seems to have been proved an accidental illusion, especially since it is known to be inaudible through a telephone line.

In other words, I still have the right to make random noise and call it music."

1994 Human Voice Synthesizer Calculator Prototype

YouTube via VironCybernet
"This is one of two prototypes. The other had a display, but was given away and then sadly thrown away. It uses the same kind of speech synthesis as my "awful" disks from 1985, but the method of programming sounds was reasonable in this case. This project was cancelled without ever being tested by for whom it was being designed, and is in a very early and peculiar state. It calculates arithmetic using it's memory as a virtual blackboard, exactly as a person would do it, but has a precision of 14 digits. It has the voices of two people, which were copied from my other projects, because I had not yet gotten around to making a voice specifically for it. The synthesizer was hastily set to work below telephone quality and below worst-case MP3 sample rates but I don't think it sounds bad in this video, especially compared to the "1985 disks".

The video ends as the battery "croaks"."

24x7digital MiniVLTone

"MiniVLTone for iPhone and iPod Touch is a shout-out to the 1980s handheld electronic era, paying homage to the Casio VL-Tone synthesizer. Jam back to the decade of one-hit-wonders and fondly recall the days when MTV still played music-videos! Listening to MiniVLTone's sampled beats will remind you of the rise of New Wave and Synth Pop, as well as the fall of the Berlin Wall, and playing some melodies on the chiclet keyboard will surely take you back to the time of 8-bit simplicity and Rubik's Cube complexity! And don't forget Trio's Da Da Da either! The Challenger and Chernobyl might be long gone, but SWING, ROCK-1, BOSSANOVA and SAMBA rhythms live on in Apple's iTunes App Store!

MiniVLTone includes the following features: 29 chiclet keyboard with OCTAVE control for four full octaves of square-wave synthesizer sonics, analog-style VOLUME slider control, five fantastic INSTRUMENTS (piano, fantasy, violin, flute, and guitar) in full circa-1981 monophonic fidelity, and ten awesomely eighties pre-drum-machine RHYTHMS (march ,waltz, 4-beat, swing, rock-1, rock-2, bossanova, samba, rhumba, and beguine), as well as the world-famously stylish DEMO SONG!

MiniVLTone does not include a calculator, recording mode, one-key-play, LCD display, or ADSR envelope programming, but it also does not require four AA-batteries!"

XenoSonic DRSSTC Bach Little Fugue Tesla Coil Yamaha Synth

YouTube via eastvoltresearch. I thought I posted this one before, but apparently not. I must have been thinking of this post.
"A quick and dirty demonstration of the XenoSonic Audio Interface. A Yamaha S03 Synthesizer is hooked up directly to the miniBrute DRSSTC via the XenoSonic Audio Interface.

Since the XenoSonic only produces monophonic output, i prerecorded the Bach Fugue in Gminor on my Allen C-6 Classical organ and then simply added various voices using the Yamaha S03 in real time to the Tesla coil. Its quite a bit sloppy, but thats mostly because i didn't really practice how i was going to play individual voices from the piece and i had a hard time hearing the actual prerecorded music, so its a bit out of synch.

Anyways, enjoy. More information and details can be found at http://www.easternvoltageresearch.com."

1972 Triadex The Muse– World’s First Digital Instrument

via this auction

"The Triadex Muse is the first digital musical instrument ever made. The Muse is a music composer machine or digital synthesizer and melody composer, involving early logic modules in a unique circuit that allows the
possibility of 14 trillion musical note combinations.

It was made in 1972 by Triadex Inc., Brookline, Mass. It was designed by Edward Fredkin and Marvin Minsky at MIT. The first Muse was designed by MIT graduates Edward Fredkin and Marvin Minsky in the late 1960’s. Minsky was on the set of “2001 A Space Odyssey”, and taught Stanley Kubrick about Artificial Intelligence as he created Hal.

The Muse is an algorithmic music generator that uses digital logic circuits to produce a sequence of notes (through a 4-inch built-in speaker or external speaker) based on the settings of various controls on the front panel: four small sliders that control Volume, Tempo, Pitch, and Fine Pitch. The switches to either side are used to start and stop the sequence, or to step through it note-by-note. Of the eight larger sliders on the right, four control the musical intervals used (labeled A, B, C, and D), and four control the theme (labeled W, X, Y, and Z). A rest can be substituted for the lowest note by flipping a toggle switch.

The exact logic behind the composition engine is rather technical, and not exactly intuitive. The tempo clock can be slaved to that of another Muse, allowing for multi-part compositions. These connections are on the underside (see photo).

It is not known for certain how many were made, but they are considered extremely rare. Estimate stated by Tom Whitwell, of the now defunct blog spot, Music Thing, was that only 280 were made.

The Muse is the subject of U. S. Patent 3610801. For years, the Muse was a featured exhibit at the Museum of Science, Boston. The signage explained the device's algorithmic (and deterministic) approach to the creation of its seemingly-random music. Far from being random, its preset "song" played continuously -- and was even given a name, "Museum Musings," by the staff."
