The WSG Synthitar

"This is a synth guitar I built from a second hand First Act mini electric guitar that I stripped down, and rebuilt using Ray Wilson's WSG synth schematics. With only one Wacky/Weird/Zany voice, and without the oddness filter (it can plug into guitar pedals for effects and filters.)
Two ribbon controllers on the neck control the wacky and weird oscillator frequencies. Controls where the pickup used to be effect the Zany oscillator, and switches near the neck control the wacky send and range.
Its black with a metal flake flame paint job was my first flame project with the airbrush."

"Air, although ethereal, can move matter. Air, which appears most unsubstantial and immaterial, moves matter, moves leaves, and moves flowers.

MachineARIA is an installation that invites the viewer to contemplate a hybrid ecosystem - natural and artificial - of electromechanically modified plants. These augmented plants contain the source of the wind that makes them sway and caresses them.

A custom circuit with a PIC microcontroller is connected to five motors with their propellers and LED's, each one grafted to the culm of a bamboo plant. The motors and LED's are turned on and off sequentially: the resulting motion simulates a delicate breeze wind blow ."

Remember the "Sample Smasher" pictured below? It looks like this will be one of the first products from Glitch Labs, a new Circuit Bending design company from GoodVillian. The core website is coming soon, however the forum appears to be up listing a few items including the "Sample Smasher Model 100" pictured below, the "Sample Smasher Model 500," and the "Glitch Modular System." There are details on the Model 500 but not the Modular System.

"Randomizing the timing to the Synthesizers.com Q960 step sequencer by using a Noise Generator into a Sample & Hold then the output voltage to an Instrument Interface module. Tweak it just right and you get a random gate pulse for the shift input on the Q960 sequencer.
This track also uses the Pan module to give a stereo ping pong effect from two separate oscillator, filter, envelope and amplifier voices. Two hard synchronized LFO's sculpted the filter even more for a tighter pulse sound. A Ring modulator and tuning the oscillator voices in octaves gave a variety to the voices. The Trigger bus module gave accent selection on one filter voice. All modules are Arrick Robotics synthesizers.com. The reverb is a Lexicon MX200."

Musikmesse: MFB DRUM-07 HH/CY

MFB DRUM-07 HH/CY
* analogue hihat and cymbal
* separate adjustable decay for open- and closed-hihat
* cymbal with tone control, decay and external input
* dynamic trigger-inputs
* MSRP: 129,- Euro

The DRUM-07 module is based upon the cymbal- and hihat-sound-circuit of our MFB-522 drum-computer, slightly modified and expanded. In comparison to the DRUM-03 module that also generates cymbal and hihat sounds, DRUM-07 does not use white noise as sound source but a metallic oscillator mixture.
DRUM-07 was developed as a modular component. Therefore, the parameters decay for cymbal and open-hihat and tone can also be controlled by CV-sources like envelopes, LFOs, step-sequencers. Manual adjustment is available for the parameter tune that affects both cymbal and hihat as well as for the closed-hihat’s decay.
Triggering open-hihat, closed-hihat and cymbal of the module is possible through various signal types. Besides sequencer generated analogue and digital trigger-signals, drum-pads, piezo- and dynamic microphones may also be used. Here, the sens-controls allow individual adjustment of the input sensitivity. Dynamic triggering will not only affect the sound’s volume but also attack and sound length slightly.The functions in detail:

Hihat: The hihat sound is created by several square-oscillators that are fed into a band-pass-filter. Two decay controls allow individual sound-length-adjustments for closed- and open-hihat. In addition, the decay parameter for the open-hihat can be controlled by CV-voltage.
Tune sets the frequency for all square-oscillators simultaneously. Because the cymbal sound accesses the same oscillators, tune also affects this sound.

Cymbal: The cymbal sound is based upon the same sound source as the Hihat, only that it uses two band-pass-filters that individually shape the attack- and decay-phase. However, the decay parameter controls the length of both attack and sound length. This parameter can also be controlled by an external CV-source. Tone sets the balance between the differently filtered signals paths. This parameter is also under CV-control but does not offer an internal attenuator.
A specialty of the cymbal sound is its tone-input. Here, you can connect an external sound source that replaces the DRUM-07’s internal square-oscillators for the decay phase. The internal oscillators are still in use for the sound’s attack-phase.

The module has a width of 60 mm (12 TE). It is equipped with a connector cable compatible to Doepfer’s system-bus.

MFB-products are sold through certified dealers. In case there is no such dealer in your area, you may order the module directly for a price of 129 Euro plus 10 Euro shipping/COD costs."

Musikmesse: Doepfer A-111-5 Synthesizer Voice

"Module A-111-5 is a complete monophonic synthesizer module that includes these components:

VCO
* manual tune control (with an internal jumper the range can be set to ~ +/-1 half an octave or ~ +/-2.5 octaves)
* range switch -1 / 0 / +1 octave
* frequency range about 10Hz ... 12kHz
* FM (frequency modulation) control with modulation source switch (LFO1 / off / ADSR)
* manual pulsewidth control for rectangle waveform
* PWM control with modulation source switch (LFO2 / off / ADSR)
* waveform switch (sawtooth / off / triangle)
* the sum of the waveform chosen by this switch and the rectangle is fed into the VCF (to turn the rectangle off the PW control has to be set fully CCW)
* external CV input for VCO frequency (1V/octave)
* external CV input for external PWM of the rectangle
* internal CV input for frequency (1V/octave) connected to the A-100 bus via jumper, the jumper can be used to interrupt this internal connection if not wanted

VCF
* 24 dB low pass
* ~ 12 octaves frequency range
* manual frequency control
* tracking switch half - off - full (internally connected to the external frequency CV input of the VCO, i.e. the VCF tracks to the VCO if the switch is set to "half" or "full" position)
* XM: exponential FM (frequency modulation) control with modulation source switch (LFO2 / off / ADSR)
* LM: linear FM (frequency modulation) control to modulate the VCF by the triangle of the VCO in a linear (!) manner
* manual resonance control (up to self oscillation)
* external audio input (this signal is added to the VCO signal)
* external CV input for filter frequency
* 1V/octave tracking for usage of the VCF as a sine wave oscillator (not as precise as the VCO but much better than most of the other filters)

VCA
* manual amplitude control
* AM (amplitude modulation) control with modulation source switch (LFO1 / off / ADSR)
* external CV input for VCA amplitude
* special control scale: exponential scale in the range from about -20dB to -80/90dB, linear scale from about -20dB to 0dB
Remark: this special control scale results in a loudness behaviour that is a bit different from pure linear or exponential VCAs

LFO1 and LFO2
* manual frequency control
* waveform switch (triangle / off / rectangle)
* range switch (low, audio, medium)
* LED display (dual green/red color for positive/negative share of the signal)
* the LFO1 signal is available as an additional socket (to use the LFO1 signal for external modules)
* an internal jumper can be used to select between the LFO1 signal or the inverted LFO1 signal

ADSR
* manual controls for Attack, Decay, Sustain, Release
* range switch (long, short, medium)
* blue LED display
* ADSR signal is available as an additional socket (to use the ADSR signal for external modules)
* Gate input connected to the A-100 bus via jumper, the jumper can be used to interrupt this internal connection if not wanted

Remarks:
* As the LFO frequencies can go up to moderate audio range (~ 5kHz) even audio FM effects of VCO (pitch and pulsewidth), VCF and ADSR are possible !
* If the VCO is turned off (waveform switch = center position, pulsewidth control = fully CCW) and the VCF resonance is set to maximum the module can be used as a sine oscillator. The sine can be modulated in a linear manner from the triangle wave of the VCO and by LFO2 in an exponential manner at the same time !
* from the factory the socket labelled "LFO1" outputs the inverted LFO1 signal. But as the module has several internal pin headers available even another signal may appear at this socket by changing the internal module patch. These six pin headers are available: LFO1 output, LFO2 output, ADSR output, inverter input, inverter output, output socket. The internal default patch is LFO1 -> inverter input, inverter output -> output socket (i.e. socket = inverted LFO1). But even another signal can be patched to this socket (e.g. inverted ADSR, non-inverted LFO1, inverted or non-inverted LFO2). It is also possible to add a blind panel next to the A-111-5 with a couple of sockets that are connected to the corresponding pins of the A-111-5 pc board. The in- and outputs of the VCO, VCF and VCA are not available as pin headers because the VCO, VCF and VCA are internally connected in the circuit which is used in this module.

This is a preliminary information about the planned module. The features are still subject to change and all specifications are still preliminary without any obligation!"

You can find samples at the bottom of the Doepfer A-111-5 page.

No time to compare the feature list with the Dark Energy, but at first glance they clearly appears to be the same - one a eurorack module and one a desktop stand alone unit.

Note: you can find more announced by Doepfer during this year's Musikmesse on the Doepfer homepage as well as this PDF.

Musikmesse: Doepfer A-138m Matrix Mixer

"Module A-138m is a 4 x 4 matrix mixer with switches for unipolar/bipolar mode for each column. Unipolar means that the controls work as attenuators. Bipolar means that the controls work as polarizers. In this mode the amplification is zero in the middle position of the corresponding control. Turning the knob counterclockwise from the center position the signal is subtracted from the output sum with increasing amount (i.e. negative). Turning the knob clockwise from the center position the signal is added to the output sum with increasing amount.

This is a very preliminary information about the planned module. The features are still subject to change and all specifications are still preliminary without any obligation!"

Alec Empire - Making of 'Shivers' + Interview pt.2

"After the critical acclaim of 2008s, The Golden Foretaste of Heaven, Alec Empire releases Shivers, a 7 track mini album that serves up as a little taster for his highly anticipated new album out later this year.

This is the most recent output from The Hellish Vortex, the production team founded by Alec Empire and Nic Endo.

Last year, Empire announced a change in direction, a departure from his signature digital hardcore sound and called it The Sound of New Berlin. This sonic revolution has brought about an influx of hipster collaborations in the form of Raveonettes, who got their single remixed by Nic Endo and Alecs mutual pairing with one, Patrick Wolf, whos Berlin musings have led to the hotly tipped single, Vultures.

Past-Present-Future Tour 2009:
Alec Empire and Nic Endo present a special tour this year playing material from ATR to songs from the next album. Starting April 30th.

Lunetta - A Simple CMOS Musical Instrument

YouTube via bchris1776

"This is a simple demonstration of my "Lunetta" musical instrument.
This Lunetta is built primarily from 4000 series CMOS integrated circuits with inputs and outputs taken to front panel jacks to be patched to other sections. This Lunetta uses counters, shift registers, XOR gates and 40106 schmidt trigger clocks and oscillators.
There are those who can make some great music with these - however I'm not one of them :)
There was no great thought put into this patch - I just plugged and played as I went. As such, every audio result was a surprise as I changed patch locations and clock speeds. I think that's half the fun of these circuits.
A good source for information on building these instruments and seeing what others have done is Electro-music.com in the DIY forum.

Musikmesse: TC-Helicon announce VoiceTone Synth

"TC-Helicon announce VoiceTone Synth – radical vocal processing in a pedal
April 1, 2009 | 09:00:00 AM
Incredible new vocal processing pedal from TC-Helicon.

VoiceTone Synth brings together a collection of extreme exotic and contemporary sonic effects, including jagged HardTuneTM effects, classic Vocoder effects, a voice-controlled synthesizer and vocal distortion and megaphone effects. Now vocalists or anyone looking to add a modern edge to their live performances and studio productions can dial-in these effects instantly with the press of a footswitch.

HardTune
The jagged, stair-stepped vocal sound of key-based hard tuning is everywhere in contemporary R&B, Hip Hop and Electronica. This feature has eluded the majority of performing musicians until VoiceTone Synth came along. Now musicians can produce this effect live by simply recalling a preset and hitting the ‘On’ button. Easy key input methods include auto-instrument sensing or pushbuttons with a clear display of the current key. Other features of the HardTune effect include dry voice mixing, octave shift and character modification.

Vocoder
The vocoder in VoiceTone Synth is called 'Massive-Band' for a reason. It effectively scales resolution from ultra-clearly-enunciated Robot voices to the sound of the classic, analog low-band-count vocoders we all know and love. The benefit is that, while typical vocoders require a lot of pre-processing like distortion and EQ to hear the effect properly, with the VoiceTone Synth vocoder effect you can input signals such as clean acoustic guitar and vocode perfectly for sounds that until now have been impossible to achieve.

Voice-controlled Synth
The Vocoder also features a voice-controlled synth mode – considered by many as the Holy Grail for vocoding. Prior to VoiceTone Synth, vocoding required your voice (the exciter), and an instrument input (the carrier) to make cool vocoded sounds. Of course VoiceTone Synth supports the dual input method, but for artists who don't have another instrument or don't play one, VoiceTone Synth can generate a synth part directly from your vocal and vocode that. The result? Generated vocoder parts with one input: your voice.

VoiceTone Synth - key features
* HardTune effect with user-selectable key or instrument-sensing
* Vocoder carrier can be driven by internal voice-controlled synth or instrument input (such as guitar)
* Transducer effects, such as megaphones, distortion and radio voices
* All effects can run simultaneously
* Includes Tone feature for adaptive live engineer sound processing
* Presets that can be edited and stored
* Instrument Thru allows normal instrument amplification and vocoding"
