Sherman FB2 MIDI Control Fun

YouTube via bigcitymusic
"It seems like every time we turn on the Sherman Filterbank 2 we get new and interesting sounds! We have never messed with the MIDI control before and thought it would be an opportune time for a video. The Elektron Machinedrum is sequencing the drums and controlling the cutoff of filter one and two as well as the the release on the AR envelope. If you watch closely you can see us un-mute the MIDI sequencer channel on the MD, engaging MIDI control. The Sherman is by far one of the best values in the analog processor realm."

Synthex: Analog Synth & Sound FX Unit

YouTube via abstractjuz

"Synthex is the latest model in the Hex Series of Hybrid Synths and Effects from ADT. Analog VCO with Square and Triangle Wave outputs via a dedicated cross-fade. Hard Sync and FM Modulation via two external audio inputs - also with their own cross-fade. Two switchable modes to go from more familiar analog sounds to awesome, bizarre and completely freakish sound effects. Great for tweak-heads and sound-designers alike. A very limited quantity of this model will be available for sale - please PM me if you'd like to know more."

Rhodes Chroma Demo, Part 1

YouTube via NonDigitalTom

"Here's the first of a four part series demonstrating the Rhodes Chroma, arguably the greatest polyphonic analog synthesizer of all time. The video was shot with the help of Mike Thompson, who's doing the majority of the playing in this demo. One of the channels on the Chroma is not working, so what you're hearing is 7 out of its 8 voices. The Chroma Expander shown is not currently functioning (we'll get to it someday though).

I acquired this Rhodes Chroma on trade in non-working condition with the hope I could one day get it up and running. I had the power supply replaced and purchased the CC+ upgrade available through RhodesChroma.com. After that, I had three voices working. With a little troubleshooting and swapping around of voice cards I was able to get four voices. Mike was super motivated to hear the Chroma in its full glory (which we've yet to do, mind you). With his help and determination, we figured out that the Chroma had four dead voice cards and one bad channel. We're still trying to figure out what to do about that. In the meantime, I acquired the Chroma Expander, which is non-functional but had good working voice cards. So we pulled some cards from the Expander to make our 7 voice Chroma, which is demonstrated in the video."

Rhodes Chroma Demo, Part 2

"Here's the second installment of our Rhodes Chroma demo. The Chroma originally had one bank of 50 patches, but the CC+ CPU upgrade expands the memory to allow 4 banks of 50 patches. This demo is all the second bank (which we've been referring to as "Bank B"). This time it's just me playing. One thing I really love about the Chroma is the velocity sensitivity, especially for envelope-controlled filter effects. You can see this demonstrated here in some of the patches where I just used the left hand. That (combined with the weighted real wood keys) really makes the Chroma a blast to play. I can't say enough good things about this synth. Seriously. Can't wait to get the Expander going!

Check out http://www.formusiciansonly.com/blog to see pictures of our vintage keyboard studio."

Rhodes Chroma Demo, Part 3

Uploaded by NonDigitalTom on Apr 15, 2009

"Here's the third part in our Rhodes Chroma demo series, this time featuring sounds from Bank C (including the patch we used for our ominous intro). These all came preloaded with the CC+ upgrade - we haven't even gotten to programming our own yet. Should be a lot of fun! This demo features a mix of Mike and myself taking turns going through various patches. Keep in mind, there's no reverb, delay, or effects of any kind in any of these videos; just the Chroma being recorded direct.
Check out http://www.formusiciansonly.com/blog to see pictures of our vintage keyboard studio."

A/DA Harmony Synthesizer demo

YouTube via NonDigitalTom
"Demo of the super rare A/DA Harmony Synthesizer. This is (to the best of our knowledge) the ONLY harmonizer ever designed using all analog circuitry. Video features demonstrations of the harmonizing features on various settings, A and B harmony channels with momentary switching, analog delay setting, and self-oscillation capabilities. The video was recorded live, no post-production audio. The guitar is a '52 Reissue Fender Telecaster, and the amp is a '66 Blackface Fender Princeton Reverb with a Jensen C10N speaker. No other effects are used."

Stearns Collection Moog Modular

via Ron
"A friend of mine in Ann Arbor, Michigan, sent me a couple of pictures yesterday that I thought you would be interested in. I asked him if he minded if I sent them along to you. He said that would be fine, and also sent along a couple of links to where the synth resides. From my friend's description:

"After the concert (Five Peace Band at Hill Auditorium), I ventured downstairs (there's an area open now after renovation a few years ago) and there in one of the display windows is a vintage Moog synth, circa 1964, which says it was donated in honor of Robert Moog. I thought of you, of course, when I saw it, so took a few photos. Here are a couple. Pretty cool to see. I believe these are in the permanent collection at the School of Music instrument museum thing."

"Here's the link to the Stearns Collection at UM School of Music. Here's the link to the page about the Moog Synth which I believe must be the same one I saw probably on temporary display at Hill Auditorium. Click on the photos to get larger versions. Some better shots than mine. It says this was the 'first commercially produced Moog synthesizer.' Pretty cool."
Pretty cool indeed. Imagine unknowingly walking into that after a show. :) BTW, you might remember this Moog from these posts (scroll when you get there).

"here I am messing around with sending audio from roland tb303 into boss syb-3 pedal and then into boss os-2 pedal, the audio is be routed via ableton live using external effects and motu ultralite, I go through a number of the boss syb-3 settings and the boss os-2 settings, you can hear how it tracks the tb303 bassline.

The drum is the bassdrum from tr606 with some overdrive in live."

I have a rule that I only post synths. Now and then I make the exception by posting on some of the people of interest behind the world of synths - the movers and shakers so to speak. Manufacturers usually get the post, but in this case it's two people that bring you synth content on a regular basis, Aliens Project and moogulator of sequencer.de. If you are lucky enough to be in the area, go check them out. I'm curious if monome is directly affiliated with http://monome.org. If anyone knows feel free to comment.

Clavia May Release Limited Run of Nord Modular G2 DSP Expansion Boards

If you have a G2 or plan on getting one, read this now. via James:

"There is a tread on electro-music.com that would be of keen interest to all Nord Modular G2 owners who don't have the DSP expansion, It appears that Clavia may do a new run of PCBs if the order numbers are high enough, in this case over 50. Here is the post that started it all:

'Clavia reacted possitively on the request to make a new run of the G2 expansion boards.
There are some restrictions though...

1 Clavia wants to sell at least 50 expansion boards to make it profit able.
2 All the components have to be available still
3 Clavia doesn't sell to private costumers, so there has to be a kind of distributor
4 The price isn't set yet.

So at first a poll how many users want an expansion board.
After 50 positive reaction will be counted in this poll, to which a post must be added containing your name and country (which will give an indication about distributing the boards over the world), Clavia can investigate if production is possible and calculate the price.
electro-music.com will notify everyone by Personal Mail.
Note the prices may not be the same world wide due to distributors and shipping costs.

Maybe it's a good thing to arrange something about 'payments in advance'.
Note Wout Blommers is only the go-between!

This poll is only a first step in the whole process...
If there are any problems or a break down I'll let you know in this thread. '

Also another user contacted Clavia not knowing of the previous thread and got this response:

'Hi

This is usually not feasible, since we do not sell direct to end users. Theoretically, we then need to find a way to have dealers in various locations (europe and the US e.g.) to take prepaid orders, and this is a huge undertaking, which dealers usually are not up to - it may seem simple enough, but it is quite difficult to administrate.

We do not have the actual PCB anymore, and the smallest run we could possibly manufacture would be 50 units. We are not going to put this expansion in stock, so the only chance would be if e.g. one european webshop and one US based webshop would be interested in purchasing the whole, final production run of these units. The retail price would then be the same as the last retail, before we cut the price for the "last" units that we had in stock, in the realms of approx. 300 euros plus tax per unit.

In short, if we get an order from a distributor (who then probably would have to have an firm order from a retailer/shop) of 50 units, or two orders from 2 distributors equalling to the same number of units, this could be done.

Best regards,
Tomas Johansson

MOOG 907 Filter Bank on VEMIA

listed here
Unfortunately there isn't a new image of the actual item. The history is interesting though: "Brand new original new old stock Moog 907 Fixed Filter Bank from 1973, being sold by a recognized figure in the field who was formerly Vice President, Studio Systems Division, Moog Music, Inc. and worked with Bob Moog for more than 20 years. Here's what he says:- 'The unit offered has never been mounted, there are no screw marks whatsoever. It is brand new as of its date of manufacture, which is 08-28-73 (August 28 1973), and inspected on 08-29-73. The assembly is by J.P. which is undoubtedly Mr. Patronski. The serial number (P) is: 7338, and these data plus the handwritten number 11728 are written on the yellow Moog Music Inc. cardboard/paper attached to this filter. It is clean as a whistle, and has been stored in a humidity controlled environment since the day it left the Moog factory in Cheektowaga, NY, USA. in the 'seventies. I took it from the Moog factory in lieu of salary, as per agreement with management at the time, as the old Moog Electronics, Inc. was going under. Note that this is the relatively rare 4-wide Model 907, not found everywhere.' VEMIA NOTE: Although this has four fewer frequencies than the 914 that we had been hoping for, it is still one of the nicest individual lots we have ever had in the auction. These filterbanks are simply irreplaceable and impossible to copy exactly, and to find a brand new one with such provenance is amazing. This is the only module being sold by this owner at this time - and it's been hard enough persuading him finally to part with this one piece of history! A photo has not been possible, but we will show a photo of a similar (not completely identical) used module, taken by the seller in the 70s. The module is untested (since 1973!), and it is possible it may need minor servicing although it is brand new. It will be packed with great care, and a written provenance provided by the seller."

Note the VEMIA auctions end this Saturday.
