Dr. Patrick Gleeson

via Dr. Patrick Gleeson on MySpace:
"In 1968, jazz legend Herbie Hancock left Miles Davis' band (after 5 years) to pursue his solo career. Hancock's concept quickly moved deeper into electronic/jazz fusion and was perfected with the addition to his band of Dr. Patrick Gleeson. Dr. Gleeson performed on Moog and Arp synthesizers, old-school analog modular types, which were capable of creating a myriad of sounds that had never really been heard in a jazz/improv context. These sounds, as represented on the albums "Crossings" and "Sextant", from 1971/72, were brimming with abstract imagery both alien and organic. Although Hancock & Miles Davis both were reportedly influenced by avant garde composer, Karlheinz Stockhausen, it was Patrick Gleeson who truly brought the sonic world of Stockhausen to jazz music and created new definitions for the word "fusion"..."

Elka Synthex - Full uncut version

"Paul Wiffen demonstrates a 1984 Elka Synthex. Most famously used on Rendezvous as the Laserharp sound by Jean Michel Jarre. Paul also originally programmed the original presets. Also used by Geoff Downes and Stevie Wonder - a beautiful synth sorely missed." EDP Wasp and Oxford Synthesizer Company OSCar covered as well.

Rare Jen String Machine SM-2007

via Jóhann

"There are three voices, AR env and a highpass filter. The buttons under the controls are labeled "Auto Sustain", "Ensemble", "Solo" and "Organ". I'm not sure what the "Auto Sustain" does but the other three are chorus presets. There is very little info on this synth on the internet."

Out of 26,277 posts to date, this is the first and only post on the Jen String Machine SM-1007.

Folktek "Drum Scape Sequencer"

via this auction
"The Drum Scape Sequencer is one of one and is part of the Quadrum series of works by Arius Blaze of folktek. For more info and sound samples please go to the site: ariusblaze.com

The sound has the ability to create all of the sounds that the other drum scapes make (Simian drum scape, impressionist drum scape etc.) which are generally huge and analog drones and drums - However, with added controls over the sound it also has the ability to move deeply into the realm of clicks and cuts style beats and a vast array very interesting high frequency rhythmic textures.

The main features are as follows:
= drum section with three primary waves and white noise
= controls over decay, frequency and a number of non standard controls to create very atypical sounds
= main volume
= 3 part delay with reverse, tight and tap covering a broad range
= delay has standard controls for mix, repeat and time
= 8 part wireless/plugless sequencer section with led indicators
= sequencer section has time control, add part, subtract part, stop and pause
= each of the eight parts has individual level control
= dual 1/4" outputs for stereo effect
= 1/8" jacks for each of the sequencer parts to synch with external gear
= 4x 1/8" jacks for triggering of drum parts
= lamp indicators
= all custom keys and buttons
= custom wood box
= 9v ac power."

Sequencer with Voltage Controlled Switch

Sequencer with Voltage Controlled Switch from Peter Speer on Vimeo.

"Using a Doepfer A-150 Voltage Controlled Switch to alternate between reset points on a Voice of Saturn Sequencer-- the /16 output from an A-160 Clock Divider is switching between the Step 5 and Step 9 reset points on the Sequencer (so that it plays the 4-note pattern three times and the 8-note pattern once).

CV Out from the Sequencer is controlling the High Pass Cutoff Frequency on a Frostwave Resonator (set to self-oscillate).

The Square output from the ELF LFO is sent to a multiple, and from there is:

1. clocking the Sequencer
2. triggering the Clock Divider
3. gating an A-140 Envelope Generator

The Audio output from the Resonator is sent to the top half of an A-132-3 VCA. One of the A-140's outputs is sending CV to the VCA, and the other 140 output is controlling the Low Pass Cutoff Frequency on the Resonator. I don't have a Low Pass Gate-- this is the closest I can get to a "plucky" sound.

I apologize for the audio and video being a hair out of sync. Do your best to ignore it.

An odd theme

YouTube via attorks

"A sort-of Chinese like theme with a sequenced accompaniment may seem an odd combination. But I kind of liked it. The internal sequencer of the Waldorf Q Keyboard is the master sequencer; the Doepfer MAQ16/3 is synchronized to that. The sound from the Waldorf Q Keyboard is the first sequence you hear. The MFM, using the Synthesizers.com Q107 filter is the 2nd sequencer you hear; the MFM is driven by the MAQ 16/3. The 3rd sequence you hear is from the Creamware MiniMax ASB (not visible in the video) which is driven by the internal Waldorf Q Keyboard sequencer. The first solo is from the Korg 900PS with an Oldfield-like sound. The Clavia Nord Lead 1 is also linked to the Synthesizers.com Modular so you hear 2 sounds when I play the Nord lead 1 keyboard for solo's. I had to shorten the video somewhat because of the YouTube limit of 10 minutes. The original video can be seen or downloaded from my website after 23 april."

ONDO Music Editing Phone

ONDO Music Editing Phone
"Ondo enables a more flexible and physical experience with mobile phones

Pilotfish, a progressive industrial design and product development studio based in Munich, Amsterdam and Taipei introduced Ondo, a dedicated music editing phone concept. The Ondo concept enables OEMs to visualize a new form of user interaction for mobile phones.

User
The target user for “Ondo” is the music enthusiast who seeks to interactively capture and edit sounds. Going beyond software-based solutions of other products, it is specifically designed to effectively collect pure sounds and is specially constructed to create a tactile sound editing experience.

Jamming
An innovative feature of “Ondo” is the three removable display ”sticks”. In their normal state, the “sticks” act as a unified touch display for the mobile device. When removed, each can be separately clipped onto a musical instrument or person to capture live sound. Like a portable recording studio, “Ondo” makes mixing tracks easy, because each “stick” picks up isolated sounds from each individual instrument. The recordings can be immediately sent via MMS (Multimedia Messaging) around the globe allowing musicians at different geographical locations to jam together.

Music Editing
Made from form-sensitive flexible materials, the “Ondo” allows the user to modify recorded sounds by physically twisting and bending the device. Like a guitarist pulling on a whammy bar, the user can feel and hear the musical effects as they create them.

Mixing
In party mode, “Ondo” works as a digital mixer enabling the user to create seamless transitions between songs. This is made easy with interactive touch functions combined with integrated software support."

Yamaha YC 25-D

via Rumski forum. via fischek.

via Harmony Central user reviews:
"It's a loaded duo-manual combo organ, with 16,8,4,1,2,2-2\3,1-3\5, trombone, kinura (?),trumpet, and string for the top keys. 16,8,4,2-2\3 on the bottom. It's got a 19 not bass section, which can be turned on or off. This has 8, 16, and "bass guitar" which is suprisingly ahead of its time. (Think 1980 synth) There is also percussion, and vibrato, as well as optional bass pedals. The weirder features are the very unmusical "Attack Glide" stop which bends the note up to the desired pitch. Next to this a "Touch Mute" stop is located, which just changes the tone, and drops the volume a bit. I find the action noticably bad. There's no sensation of "click" when the key is pressed. It feels like playing on rubber pads. This is quite irritating."

"This will eventually be a series of synthesizers which respond to light, positioned together with a series of lights that respond to sound. Exterior sounds generate light, which in turn generates sound, creating a loop of flashing light and noise. Components are housed in clear glass containers and each element is different, making a family of organic self-perpetuating characters which respond to each other as well as audience interaction."
