Barry Ptolemy's Transcendent Man

"a portrait of inventor and futurist Ray Kurzweil" see the write-up on comingsoon.net and Tribeca Film.
via https://twitter.com/noisesource

Program Notes via Tribeca Film:
"Ray Kurzweil is one of the world's foremost inventors. At age 15 he was designing programs that were adapted by IBM and soon after machines that allowed the blind to read. Today he is hailed by some as a modern-day Nostradamus and dismissed by others as a crackpot. The "futurist" and best-selling author is a leading theorist on the "technological singularity"—a time when humans and machines will fuse in the next phase of bio-technological evolution, creating superintelligent, godlike beings that could conceivably live forever. The kicker is, Kurzweil claims that this monumental change is destined to happen in just 30 years.

This mind-bending documentary probes the searing questions that have previously only been teased out in science fiction. Kurzweil is as convincing as he is entertaining even when he claims he is drastically extending his own life span and will bring his late father back to life with new technology in the future. First-timer Barry Ptolemy finds a wide range of interview subjects, from evangelists and "brain builders" to William Shatner and Stevie Wonder. Matching the pace of the world it describes, the film moves at breakneck speed, saturating us with ideas and locations and images and theories. Engrossing and at times seemingly absurd, Transcendent Man makes it hard not to wonder if Kurzweil may be splitting a bull's-eye too far away for us to see.

"This is a short improvisation demonstrating my hand made automated matrix mixer. It is run by a micro controller I built based on the AT Mega-168 chip. The micro controller communicates with Max/MSP via serial communication. Max/MSP automates the levels of each channel based on a controlled probability random generator. The mixer can also communicate back to Max and change values in the patch."

Type-N37 Synthesizer: Sequencer Analog VCO Noise FM PWM

via this auction
"The Type-N37 Synthesizer is a unique device for increasing the sonic dimensionality of your musical project. The simple, yet effective combination of a four step sequencer with the Type-U73 voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) produces amazing results. The operation of the device goes as follows: the sequencer counts from 1 to 4, sending a user defined voltage to the VCO on each count (or step), which is in turn converted to musical tone. The output is high impedance designed for a guitar amp for easy integration into your existing setup. The operation is simple and straight forward requiring no complicated patches or prior knowledge of analog synthesizer architecture. Yet it is capable of creating lush sonic textures comparable to esoteric synthesizers that cost many times more. It is a complete musical instrument with a compact foot print that can literally fit in your pocket.

1950 TUBE Synthesizer/Electronic Musical Novelty

via this auction
"1950's USA tube electronics/radio/hi-fi magazine, fully 154 pages of great projects and brilliant ads. You will love this vintage magazine IF you love tube electronics...audio, radio, test gear etc."

"An Electronic Musical Novelty: Individual Oscillator for each key permits any number of notes up to a full 66-note keyboard." by Jim Kirk.

This LOOKS like a 1950 synthesizer, it uses tubes, I'm sure it will be of interest to all early synth and electronic keyboard folks, and it gives the circuit and power supply circuit you'll need to do the job. Uses a 6SN7 tube, and 5Y3 and VR150 in the power supply."

Update via metasonix in the comments: "I've seen that article. It's an organ, and a very primitive one at that. (Electronic organs were very rare and costly at that time so it had novelty value.)"

"Concerto for Self-Accompanying Digital Synthesizer. The instrument is possibly the first realtime digital synthesizer, built at Bell Telephone Labs, NJ by Hal Alles and team, with C language software written by Laurie that processes the player's live input into an ongoing accompaniment that will continue to be played live against.

How to Make Nice Pad with Synapse Toxic

YouTube via VstCafe
"In this tutorial, I would like to show how to create some nice, warm, dreamy pad. Again, I use great Subtractive / FM Synth - Synapse Toxic II. No other external effects used (well, I used limiter to avoid clicks).

At first, I activated 6 Oscillators very slightly fined / detuned to get some movement (you can hear it nicely when I tweak Osc 4 frequency). Then I started to tweak most of Toxic's tools such as: 1x LFO, Filter + Envelope, Amp Envelope, Unison, Chorus, Delay, EQ and FM Matrix. Even without FM Matrix the sound seemed nice but with FM Matrix you can reach the exact sound you want.

Feel free to comment and don't forget to visit http://www.vstcafe.com ;)"

Intelligent Gadgets Mandala Music

"Inspired by instruments like the Hang drum and other idiophones Mandala Music is a new kind of percussion instrument for the iPhone. The instrument consists of eight notes arranged in a circle or Mandala around a central note (called the ding on a Hang). The sound, which is generated by an FM synthesizer, is varied by four controls: 1) octave, frequency, modulation, and decay. The notes are based on the scale selected in the settings window. Thirty-three different scales from around the world used in first-generation Hang drums are provided. A tuning setting allows the player to change the key of the instrument."

Sample Magic: Mastering the Ensoniq EPS/ASR Samplers

"Sample Magic: Mastering the Ensoniq EPS/ASR Samplers gives readers the inside scoop, going beyond what is covered in the manuals. Mims gives up a multitude of sound design secrets, shows how to optimize the sampler for either live performance or studio tracking, and gets into the nitty-gritty of mastering a SCSI setup. The book is not a dry technical manual, it's a witty journey through practical applications, such as:

* How to use drum loops, and make them match your sequencer tempo exactly,
* How to sneak in an extra part when all sequencer tracks are used,
* How to create an Ensoniq-format CD-ROM,
* How to save a damaged floppy disk,
* Which SCSI drives work with which samplers,
* How to set up, navigate, and optimize a SCSI drive,
* How to program an arpeggiator in your sampler (and no, it's not using the sequencer!),
* How to free up polyphony,
* What those ERROR messages can tell you,
* How to troubleshoot problems with your sampler.

Syntaur Productions has been producing Ensoniq sounds for over two decades, and has supplied sonic ammunition to Outkast, Wu Tang Clan, Nelly, Kanye West, Black Eyed Peas, Brandy, Elton John, Fishbone, and many others.

Pricing and Availability:

Andromeda Studio - From Tape to Synth

Vice magazine has an interview up with Swedish composer Ralph Lundsten of Andromeda Studio. In it he briefly discusses going from tape to synthesizers. Be sure to check the full interview out. via Jim.

"Which could either be enlightening or depressing, I imagine. How did you get started?
I bought one of those first home tape-recorders. A whole new world of sounds opened up to me as I started experimenting with it.

What were your first discoveries?
You could play at different speeds and play backwards. You could also get feedback effects. Then I started to cut and paste the tapes and got the most absurd noises, which became my specialty. Whatever the sound, I knew exactly what angle to hold the scissor to get the result I wanted.

So diddling around with tape recorders and scissors led you to create the first of this type of synthesiser?
Well, I eventually got fed up with cutting and pasting hundreds of thousands of times and discovered that instead you could put several tone generators in a row—I found a method for making them climb in any tempo. That’s how easy you make a sequencer with jump function!"
