MacBeth 3U Modules

Three images and some notes sent my way via Ken MacBeth.
(Be sure to click the images).
"- Hi Gentlemen! Well over the weekend a fair bit of work. Everything that I have wanted to implement into the dual osc is working fantastically!
I have attached some pictures for you to get an idea of how the style of what I'm doing will look. This is the Dual Oscillator- it has the two oscs- but also a genuine (not AD633 analogue multiplier IC) balanced modulator configured as ring modulator. This design is based upon early ring modulator designs common in synths from the very early 1970s. I also thought it would be neat to have an all transistor noise generator- it gives both pink and white outputs. All in all a versitile module- a real sound maker! Study the pics to see what the controls are up too...
The photos show the final art (transparancy) attached (loosely) to the frontpanel...
The next time this configuration will be seen will be the production models. Factory production commences in around 10 days- I expect these things will shift. As I have stated- like good old BK- 'have it your way'- so color formats are an option. I'm working with Shawn Cleary at AH on this- he will give you prices if you push him! Speak to him or me...
I would like to think that I have set a precedent that will hopefully sustain, in having LARGE controls within the 3U format! Others will probably follow.

Best wishes- Ken"

Little Phatty Editor Librarian ver. 2.1

"The Little Phatty Editor Librarian ver. 2.1 supports all 'Stage II' parameters, including arpeggiator settings.

The settings of the front panel controls can be displayed with several resolutions, including: 7 bit, 8 bit and high resolution (16-bit), to allow super-precise sound editing. The program can also be used to learn the inner details of the factory presets. Using the LP Editor Librarian, presets can be organized to create custom preset banks – a terrific feature for musicians preparing for their next gig!

All preset parameters can be displayed in a graphical user interface, including edit functions like Pot Mapping, Filter Poles and Arpeggiator settings. In addition, a Preset Genetics function is available to create new presets by morphing or mutating two presets together.

As a special added bonus, the Little Phatty Editor Librarian (even the demo version) is now the most convenient tool to update your Little Phatty's operating system."

Malekko / Wiard Borg Filter Episode 1 - Low Pass Gate

YouTube via bigcitymusic
"Here's the first installment of a series of videos of the new Malekko / Wiard Borg and Boogie Filters.

The Borg is an incredible mutant module birthed in the mind of designer Grant Richter of Wiard. It's a cross between a Buchla low pass gate and a Korg MS-20 filter. Thanks to Malekko Heavy Industry the module is now in Eurorack format and it sounds amazing!

We are sequencing a Cwejman VCO-2RM sine wave oscillator with an Analogue Solutions Oberkorn MkIII. The gate output of the sequencer is triggering a Plan B Model 10 Polyphonic envelope set to a really short pulse (really, really short). Using this type of envelope with a regular VCA would result in a click, no tone.

The Borg plays nice in this instance but the next video will show the meaner side of this beast. There's actually a jumper you can remove from the back pcb which gives you an extra large helping of resonance.

The "Peaking BP" is actually a pot with a switch. In the off mode, fully CCW, the Borg is in VCA mode. When you start to turn it clockwise it begins to take on a whole new character. The knob at the right we're adjusting is the CV input amount. This also has a big effect on the character of the low pass gate sound. Malekko Rocks!

P.S. The sweet blue LED does light with every trigger pulse. You just can't see it because of the frame rate of the camera or something."

The History of Ableton Live

Just saw this one on bleepology.
You can find the full history here.

"how it all began...

I make music with computers. But I am also deeply into creating tools for making music. And this is why I became one of the creators of a quite amazing piece of commercial music software, Ableton Live. This text here shall provide a bit of insight into Ableton and my role there. Ableton was founded by my former Monolake partner Gerhard Behles, together with two other brave young man, a developer, Bernd Roggendorf and a finance person, Jan Bohl.

handmade bag - thanks mom and little sis
printed manual - clear blue plastic cover sheet - six pink pages - fits inside back panel
3 year warranty - 1 year standard

the teaspoonCAS [ creamandsugar ] can be called a window sampler, a granular sampling gate, a granular trigger or something along those lines. its main intention is as a handheld voltage controlled instant looping playback sampler. there have been a number of features added in an attempt to make it universally applicable. knobs cover gain, volume, storage size, granular window and feedback. toggles allow real time speed / pitch modulation, self triggering window, and window hold. then there is a larger set of controls inside the case featuring touch pads, circuit bends, range extensions, input conversions and feedback loops. the input / pre will accept anything from direct guitar input to lower synth level. the window input will take just about any active voltage you can feed it and together with the length and threshold knobs it allows control over the window with enough detail to respond to higher audio frequencies which can allow for options like voltage controlled wave shaping if the source is clean and loud enough. the SLF switch sends the main audio to the window input and uses it as the control source allowing you to walk away from rhythmically synced sample playback. this input can also be used with a common sustain pedal to allow remote use. the CV input gives remote control over the currently available size of the sampler which can reach roughly one second though at the expense of fidelity. like the window input it will accept both AC and DC sources [ 6vdc ~ +/-3v ] which means that those of you that do not yet understand CV don't really need to, you can use anything from standard modular control sources to DAW based audio editors to draw out shapes and just plug the audio out into the CV input and it will work, easy as can be, volume in your editor then become size. CV input sensitivity together with the huge size range allows for an effect not unlike ring modulation when in pitch mode, the modulation source needs to be rather loud though. you can also insert a passive expression pedal with no other changes needed allowing the CAS to operate hands free, but you can now just shake the CAS to trigger the window so it might spend more time in your hand" more info and samples

ACIDLAB BASSLINE

via this auction
"Here's an original all analog little beastie crafted by Klaus in Germany. MIDI & DIN syncable, slick sequencer with slide and accent. CV, gate, and accent outputs to sequence other gear too. Sounds juicy and very very close to a 303 yet has it's own unique character. Solid construction - all tweakable knobs are tight, the detented pattern and pitch selector knobs have a looser feel, which is normal. Overall, minty condition. 120VAC power adapter included.

Based on the sound and feel of the Roland TB-303; the AcidLab Bassline 2 offers smooth and sweet, high quality low end for the modern day electronic musician/producer.

The AcidLab Bassline 2 is a monophonic bass synth with a MIDI-clock-synchronized sequencer featuring an intuitive sequencer control interface that makes on-the-fly creativity a piece of cake. They have also incorporated nearly every mod you could ask for (2 VCOs, ring modulation, oscillator-sync, sub-octave-oscillator, noise, VCLFO, LFO-reset, filter FM). Take the step into the world of analog synthesis with the AcidLab Bassline 2; once you do you'll never look back.

New Nord Wave Program Library

"THE BEST OF THE BEST We hand picked some of the planet's best synthesizer sound programmers to create their individual - and ultimate - Nord Wave sound banks. And we sure got some awesome sounds to share with you. The mission was to bring out the big, bad synthesizer in the Nord Wave, and to exploit its unique sonic character to the limit. The banks reflect the musical heritage and sound preferences of each and every programmer with plenty of personality. Look e.g. for vintage and skyscraper huge sounds in the US bank, modern characters that cuts through the everyday mush in the progressive Canadian and Italian banks, and a unique mix of Belgian-French haute couture from our friend Xavier Tribolet in the French bank. The German bank is as efficient as the country's rail- and highway system and the Dutch entry will make you think of tulips, the bestest of beer and excellent craftsmanship. The Future Music UK bank was conceived as a special project with the magazine. No less than three entire programming teams were set to work on a mission, which will blow your mind. Note: These new programs do not use any additional samples, so you do not have to reorganize anything in your Wave's sample partition as long as you have kept the factory samples." click here for more info.

Help if you can and remember folks, write down your serial numbers and keep them somewhere safe.

Update: another tip from Loren: "people ought to also take photos of thier gear in their homes... insurance companies want to SEE that stuff to give concrete proof that the gear was owned by the individual that was robbed. - Loren"

Something else I heard was to mark your synth on the inside or underside. Not too crazy about marking the original condition of a synth, and having people open them up, but for older used analog gear, the marks might already be there. Photograph them and keep them online somewhere.

Stan Lunetta's Moosack Machine (1970)

via this electro-music.com thread:

"Stanley Lunetta
Moosack Machine
March 7 - April 19, 1970

The moosack machine is a sculpture that produces, mixes and processes electronic sound. In the present version, the machine routes these sounds to four speakers placed in four corners of a room, and also to an audio transducer contained in the sculpture in the center of the room.

The moosack machine has two parts. The first, completely contained in the sculpture, consists of four variable oscilators, two power regulators, and a large number of input sensors. The input sensors detect changes in light, temperature, wind direction ands well as movements of people around the sculpture. These components are assembled as a sculpture, using the resistors, capacitors wires, etc. for their appearance as well as for their various electronic functions.

The second part of the moosack machine contains four mixers, the fixed oscillator/frequency divider unit, the relay box, the digital logic system, plus filters, phase shifters and reverb/tape-echo units.

The variable oscillators, controlled by the input sensors produce constantly changing output signals; e.g., continuously variable sweeps and/or disjunct leaps in either direction, amplitude, and time-event changes, and off/on functions. The output of each variable oscillator is mixed with one of the outputs from the fixed ocillator/frequency-divider unit and is sent to the digital logic system.

The digital logic system consists of a 16-bit digital counter/decoder, modified to have four inputs and eight outputs. Each output will function only when the inputs are in specific states. For example, output X1 will function only when the outputs of oscillators A, B and D are positive, and oscillator C is negative. Further, the four fixed oscillator/frequency-divider outputs (A,B,C,D) must also be positive-positive-negative-positive, if the output is to function. The fixed oscillator/frequency-divider unit moves from positive to negative at a very slow rate, changing its state one to three times per minute. Thus, the output of the digital unit consists of the relationships between variable and fixed oscillators.

Through the relay box, the four outputs of the digital unit have control over the on/off functions of the electric motors in the sculpture, turning the "cut-out wheels" and affecting the light-sensitive input sensors. There are also photo-cells that override the X outputs, turning off the relays.

The four Y outputs of the digital unit are used as audio outputs and are, of course, square waves. Thses outputs are either filtered, phase shifted, sent throuogh reverb/tape-echo units or frequency divided. The resulting sounds are then heard through the four amplifier/speaker channels. The fifth channel, a transducer in the sculpture itself, is taken from one of the mixers before the signal is sent to the digital logic system. Ideally. the moosack machine should be activated in the morning and allowed to play through the afternoon. The only human control over the moosack machine is the on/off switch. The recording in this issue was not edited or "composed" in any way. The moosack machine was allowed to play for 23 minutes. The record contains activities from the third to the eighteenth minute.
