Orgatron I

via John:

"I've had this thing for several years-- found it at a pawn shop-- but never thought to look it up. It's an old monophonic electronic organ. It says "Orgatron I" on the front. There are four switches: 1. Power 2. Vibrato (On/Off) 3. Volume (Slider) 4. Voice (Flute, Reed, Brass, Horn). The last switch appears to be some sort of preset variable filter. It would be awesome to mod it to be continuous, but that's beyond me, and I wouldn't want to open it up. It will run on 6 C batteries, but also has a standard AC power adapter plug similar to the Casio SK-1. Anyone know more info on this? All I could find was this:" "Here is a vintage Orgatron I which is a battery operated organ or you can use an AC adapter for electricity instead of batteries. It takes 6 “C” batteries which are not included. This organ comes in the original box and there are 5 music folio’s included. They have 8 sheets of music with a song on each side and there is quite a large variety of music. The first folio also has the instruction sheet and it is dated ©1973 GTR Products, Inc.

Here is a list of some of the songs available to play on this organ. Little Brown Jug, Pop Goes the Weasel, Old Dan Tucker, Ten Little Indians, Skip to My Lou, Red Roses For a Blue Lady, A Hot Time in the Old Town, Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, Greensleeves, Fascination, Animal Fair, This Old Man, with some religious songs along with a few Christmas and so many more... It measures 15 ½” long x 8” wide x 2” tall."

"I wanted to show off with a second hand Doepfer R2M ribbon controller I bought 2 days ago. I hope you excuse me for the odd false note because it is not easy to get the pitch right. I have put some marks with a pencil on the side to have some guidance.

In the beginning you hear the 8-step sequences from the self-built Modular and the Creamware MiniMax ASB (not visible). After that the 3rd sequence is added which drives the Clavia Nord Lead 1 generating a brass-type sound. This is a 12-step sequence but the timing is different as for rows 1 and 2.

The Solina-like strings is produced by the Waldorf Q keyboard. The solo comes from the Synthesizers.com Modular which is driven by the CV1, CV2 and gate outputs from the Doepfer R2M. The CV1 is for the pitch and CV2 (pressure) is for the pulsewidth of the pulse wave. The bass in the last part also comes from the Nord Lead 1."

Looks like I posted this one already here.

"waldorf blofeld license sl sample upgrade demo
Just reupping this to show someone,

Here is a very basic overview of some things that can be done with spectre and drum samples..
All drums were loaded as a single oscillator - so they all get effected together.

I dont think I played with any of the FM settings etc in this.. that's where you can get really crazy - FM two drum kits together for example..

Just a note: when you modulate the pitch on a multisample kit, it will flip up to the next sample once it gets half a semitone up (if the next sample is on the next semitone) - so you will hear the drum track changing once I put pitch modulation on, as parts get shifted to different samples. Another cool thing to do is chop a break into 16ths (or whatever), load it in order - then use the arpeggiator to play it back.

Anyhow, here is me playing with different modulations, effects, filtering, while a basic drumloop plays... Hopefully gives you some idea of the range that is possible!"

via gavin on the waldorf list:
"Hey, here's a quick little demo I put together of 808 samples all loaded as a single oscillator on the Blofeld..
Just me playing with various modulations/parameters while a basic pattern loops over and over.

There are some big things I hadn't touched on when I recorded this - things like loading a different drumkit in each oscillator, then FM'ing them together, things like that.. I'm actually making up a whole lot of sample drumkits in spectre right now, to have a play with today :) So maybe I'll try and make something that is more like a track than a random parameter-tweak.

Anyhow, might give you some idea that loading drum samples into the blofeld is AWESOME... one of the reasons at the end of the day I couldn't bring myself to sell it... probably THE reason!"

"sub vision brings together two elements: the sounds of the Subharchord, an electro-acoustic instrument developed during the 1960s in East Berlin and a processed visualization of illustrations of scientific experiments by Werner Meyer-Eppler, a German physicist and theoretician of electro-acoustics.

In the installation, the Subharchord’s tonal landscapes and constantly modulating tonal spectra are directly transposed into a real-time visual transposition derived from Meyer-Eppler’s illustrations. The visualization is projected onto the wall behind the instrument, thus combining sound and image in the same space.
The installation does not only call in question modes of perception and the significance of multi-sensory presentations. It also opens up discussion of the definitiveness of scientific and artistic standpoints whose outer form is often strikingly similar. Purely scientific observation interacts with artistic impulse so that immediately it is no longer possible to distinguish between them. Art makes use of scientific logic and science successfully deploys aesthetic premises."

FORMANTA EMS-01 USSR SOVIET ANALOG SYNTHESIZER

via this auction

video here

"FORMANTA EMS-01 was produced by Katchkanar radio equipment factory "Formanta", which is the manufacturer of such well-known makes of synthesizers as Polivoks, Formanta, Manual, Maestro etc. It bears the same logo on the package and retains some of its most impressive capabilities.

FORMANTA EMS-01 is an electronical music instrument combining a polyphonic organ and a monophonic synthesizer. It is designed to perform music of all genres and to create various sound effects while recording soundtracks for movies and plays, or studio recording. The organ has a 5-octave keyboard, 6 preset sound timbres, frequency vibrato with adjustable vibrato delay, decay adjustment and a stereophaser (both for organ and synthesizer). The "vibrato delay" scheme is activated again only after all the previously pressed keys are released. In the "legato" mode the "vibrato delay" scheme is not activated.

Synthesizer has:
— 3-octave keyboard;
— modulator, modulation voltage from which is applied to frequency modulator, width modulator, filter, and amplifier;
— broad band oscillators 1 and 2 (with various waveforms);
— mixer, designed for summation of signals from oscillators 1 and 2, noise generator, external source, and ring modulator;
— filter, designed for dynamic and static changing of the spectrum of summarized signal from mixer output;
— amplifier, designed for making the sound corresponding to various parameters of the envelope;

Organ has:
— 5-octave keyboard;
— 6 Waveforms;
— Freq vibrato with- Rate, Depth and Delay
— Stereo Phaser (For both organ and synth) with rez level
— Sustain level

Visual division of the synthesizer panel into the above listed sections and their lay-out make it more easy to orientate oneself while setting the required timbre. Besides, the synthesizer is able to simultaneously control one more similar synthesizer through a special cable and connectors CONTR IN and CONTR OUT.

The instrument provides the opportunity of connecting stereo headphones; the volume in headphones doesn't change in case of changing the volume of the instrument from zero to maximum at all the outputs of the instrument with the foot pedal; thanks to this, preliminary control of timbre through the headphones before applying it to amplifiers is possible. By switching on PHASER into the channel of organ or synthesizer, it is possible to get stereo sound in the outputs STEREO L and STEREO P. In case PHASER is switched off, both channels will function in MONO mode.

Specifications:

— 3-octave synthesizer keyboard;
— 5-octave organ keyboard;
— Sound range - 9 octaves;
— Organ band from 43,65 Hz (F controctave) to 1318 Hz (E in three-line octave);
— Operating conditions: temperature 15-35 C, humidity 65%, barometric pressure 86,6 - 106,6 kPa;
— Relative frequency deviation after 4 hours of uninterrupted operation within 0,5%;
— Adjustment range for organ and synthesizer + 6% (+ 0,5 tone);
— Minimal range of continuous detuning of oscillator 2 regarding oscillator 1 - 1 octave;
— Range of adjustment of filter cutoff frequency 100- 1500 Hz;
— Minimal dynamic range - 55 dB;
— Supply voltage AC 220+10V, 50 Hz;
— Power consumption within 75 VA;
— Weight, < 30 kg (66 Pounds)"

Elka Synthex ring modulator oddities

YouTube via MusicMiK. follow-up to this post.
"Seen as a repair, this was a failure. But i think, it could be of interest anyway.

Now this happens if you try to repair phantom problems. If you use both ring modulators on the Synthex, especially in conjunction with oscillator synchronization, you can get very strange sounds that sound like a defect of a voice. This is strengthened by the fact that when playing through the notes, it likes to happen on the same voice(s) all the time.

I measured around in the voice boards for hours and looked for differences between 2 voices, the only assumption was that the analog control of the 4070s used for waveform inversion are the problem - aging might lead to the problems. And i also suspected such aging factors in some analog switches. Couldn't prove this by measurement, so i could just replace all chips in doubt.

Fascinating enough, the problem was nearly gone after this - same test procedure. So i did the replacement in 2 other voices. But the next test procedure showed the same defects on one of the repaired voices. Evil stuff. Diving deeper into this just led me to the conclusion that this is the little bit of analog behaviour in the digital oscillators of the Synthex. It's not a bug, it's a feature.

Don't try to repair this. There is nothing to repair. And if you already did - don't take it too serious. I wasted a lot of time on this, but not everything in life, and especially in electronics DIY, can lead to success.

At least i hope you have some fun with the strange behaviour with this special sound configuration.

If you have a Synthex, please try around with this and tell me the results - as comments on this video or so. Would be interesting if this is reproducible on other units also."

Fixing a Synthex joystick - part 2

Fixing a Synthex joystick - part 3

"Another story for the DIYers among us.

Today, i repaired the joystick of an Elka Synthex. This was a bit more complicated, as the joystick is reveted together, so i needed to modify the mechanics a bit to use screws to put it back together.
This took the whole morning, and i didnt see much i could cut out of the videos i took over this period, so this is another multipart video series.

The main cleaning procedure is the same i use on potentiometers having major trouble, this part is quite simple.

All in all, this is another video showing that even hopeless damage (im sorry i didnt take videos of the condition of the synthex with this joystick before i started the repair) is no killer for unobtainable parts if you invest enough patience to get them back to life.

Part 1 shows how to take it apart and prepare it for using screws to put it together later
Part 2 is some mechanical work for the screws and cleaning the potentiometers
Part 3 shows how to put the thing together and test it

Hope anyone else with similar problems can use it as a motivation to try to repair it. The joystick was in a condition where i couldnt lose anything, it was completely unusable, i had the choice between further damaging it so its just left there as decoration or to get it fixed - which was successful."
