Oberheim OB-12 Display Replacement

via Oli: "The OB-12 interface operation relies on a 240 x 64 LCD module, for which the originals are mostly failing by now. I have found a good blue/white display which is compatible with the OB-12, and has a good contrast and viewing angle, and bright back lighting, and fits within the synth case. The photo provided here is from my ailing camera, and the actual module is somewhat crisper in contrast, brighter, and has a strong clear blue coloration.

However, the replacement module requires some minor modification prior to installation. One OB-12 owner has offered to may me (Oliver, not Matrix) to prepare a module for him to install, as he doesn't want to do his own soldering/de-soldering. I thought I would offer the service to anyone else who may be interested. I am charging $50 Australian dollars (+ costs) for my service. If enough people are interested, then there would be some savings on parts and combined shipping from supplier to me.

Cost for a single module from futurlec U.S.A. is $US65, plus $US14 shipping to me. I think combined shipping for more modules would still be $14 total, shared between participants. I will supply wires and connectors at my own cost, from my $AU50 fee (it's just easier than accounting for their costs).

If anyone would like to do this work for themselves, instructions will soon be available at the 'Friend's of OB-12' Yahoo! group.

What's involved in the LCD module replacement:

Basically I will prepare a module with my own custom modifications, and send to participating OB-12 owners for you to install in accordance with my included instructions.

From me:
- Purchase LCD module, shipped to me in Australia
- Solder custom 19 pin header onto module board
- Desolder back light LED supply power resistor from bottom side of board, and re-solder to top side of board, to allow module to fit in OB-12 case
- Construct LED back light power supply lead/connector
- Solder LED back light power supply lead to module board
- Test your new display in my OB-12
- Ship display and installation instructions to OB-12 you

From OB-12 owner:
- Email me, or contact me through 'Friend's of OB-12' Yahoo! group, BY NO LATER THAN NOVEMBER 1 (at least for first batch)
- Provide postage details, so I can provide postage quote
- Make payment to my PayPal account
- Receive display in post
- Install display according to instructions. Installation is straight forward, requiring just a Phillips/Pozidrive screwdriver
- Get back to me via email, if you require further support

Cheers,
Oli

Update via Alfa66 in the comments:

"We have now another option for replacing the display which will allow to control the contrast:

Published on May 20, 2016 Alessandro Fasan

"This is the new display type for this mod:
http://www.buydisplay.com/default/5-2...

With this display, you will need to modify slightly your ribbon cable. Cut pins 4 and 20, connect to 10k ohm as described. For Ground -connect to the white wire of the LCD backlight (yellow is +, white is ground)"

Hope you will find the video useful."

"1970`s ARP 2600P analog synthesizer with model 3620 keyboard controller. We believe this is 1972-1973, with a 1974 controller. The serial number on the synth is 26373 and the serial number on the keyboard is 36083R. This synth is in good working order- it passes signal just fine, but should probably be checked out. Includes the 4012 Moog filter."

KAWAI K3 DIGITAL ANALOG SYNTHESIZER

via this auction

"The K3 is a wavetable synthesizer. It has 32 waveforms, some of which are samples of acoustic instruments like piano and percussion as well as some unique waveforms. By combining two of these waveforms you can create unique new sounds or add a twist to a traditional sound. Since there are only 32 of these waveforms, the K3 also features a programmable digital waveform where you can tweak the harmonic content of a waveform allowing for added flexibility and range of sounds. What's really neat about the K3 is that it has analog filters and envelopes! So although the sound may be digital at first, it sure does get warmed going through the filter. The low pass resonant filter even has its own envelope generator. There's also a hi pass filter and a highly flexible LFO. The K3 is an interesting synth, nicely bridging the gap between the analog and digital domain of vintage synthesizers. Unit comes with the intergrated power cord and the Kawai RC-2 Memory Cartridge, and a PDF copy of the owners manual on CDR."

via Dave on AH regarding PAiA: "The PAiA Drummer Boy was featured in a build-it-yourself article in Popular Electronics, I believe, who featured multi-part articles on constructing many PAiA products, including their modular synths and effects boxes. PAiA is, and always has been based in the Oklahoma City area (now in the suburb of Edmond) - NEVER in Cleveland! (CLEVELAND! Where the Hell did THAT idea come from?) If mine aging brain remembers correctly, the Drummer Boy was offered in their catalogs as well, back in the ?70's? or '80's. And the orange color is probably because that's what PAiA used on the metal case parts of their 2720 model synths."

ARP AXXE + minimoog

YouTube via nathanielscott
"Recently, Mike Johnston asked me if I could work on his ARP AXXE and cure some of its weird behavior. I was not sure I could fix it but I told him I would take a look because I have never got to fool with an ARP synth. The AXXE is a very cool little synth and I would say that it complements the minimoog well. It has things the minimoog does not like 'sample and hold' and ADSR control over the OSC, not to mention keyboard repeat which is tied tot he main LFO clock. This video shows the first time I got to noodle around with the two synths. I ran the main oudio out from the minimoog into the AXXE audio in which really just goes into the filter just like the minimoog. You can still hear some weirdness with the AXXE but I am close to getting it all tightened up.

The sounds in thi video are all just a minimoog and the ARP AXXE shown. A little delay was added to the recording later to sweeten up the sound.

Again I would like to thank Andrew Cortens for use of the minimoog, and Mike Johnston for letting me make a vidie with his ARP."

A few nice new things at Ruin and Wesen

via Ruin & Wesen
"Quite a lot has has happened lately at Ruin and Wesen, although we were pretty quiet about it. The first 100 minicommands have been shipped, another 100 is ready to go here in the lab (actually they just need to have the encoders soldered in), and the first monojoystick prototypes are ready. But most importantly, a lot of work has been done on the software framework that runs on the minicommand. This allows for some very relaxed controller programming, because despite the "easy" looks, at lot of things take place inside. The following list is just a short overview of the work that has been done:

* new MIDI sync (way tighter and allows for "transparent" clock merging: no latency, I use it with 3 minicommands queued one after the other)
* merging of MIDI on the second input (select which messages you want to merge: notes, ccs, sysex, clock, etc...)
* automatic recognition of machinedrum global settings and kit changes
* automatic recognition of monomachine settings and kit changes
* new monomachine firmwares
* generation and parsing of machinedrum and monomachine patterns
* a bunch of new machinedrum firmwares
* (preliminary) looper for machinedrum
* the whole framework can be used on MacOSX or Windows to write software interacting with MIDI and the Machinedrum
* and much more...

If you're a programmer and/or interested in the inner workings of the Minicommand, you can get the full sourcecode that we write at Ruin & Wesen, as well as the schematics for the minicommand..."

"This is my attempt at getting the Micron to sound like the Drone Commander. Apart from the sound of the filters, I couldn't get the variable shape LFO thing happening either. The Micron has saw and pulse shape LFOs, but I think the Drone Commander's shape knob allows you to morphs between the two LFO shapes. This can't be done on a micron. I have to get one of those things. They're beautiful music objects.
