Power Starve - XOR - VC Comparator Pt. 1

YouTube via wonkythomas

"My riff on the Power Starve CMOS VCO. Two 40106s have their power pins fed by a combination of Pot, input & attenuated inputs. Each 40106 has 2 RC oscillators created from 4 of the 6 inverters. The 4 oscillators are fed into a 4030 Exclusive OR chip for digital Ring Mod. The module has 3 outputs being 3 differant combinations of XOR'd signals.

The only downside to the Power Starve CV input set-up is compared to other CMOS modules the output is quite low. So, I borrowed an idea from Tom BugBrand - run the output thru a comparator! This gets the levels back up to the rail-to-rail swing we know & love in out lunettas :D

In these vids I'm tricking the basic idea out a little... instead of a standard, static comparator I'm using a voltage controlled version, adapted from Ken Stones Gated Comparator module (which is an amazing piece of synth!) The VC input is what gives rise to the gated / tremelo fx we can hear, this especially great in the lunetta because everything is interelated; a clock, divider, counter & logic create the "CVs" to drive the VCO & I tap differant parts of the patch to feed the CV input on the comparator; noisy sequence fun!!!"

Power Starve - XOR - VC Comparator Pt. 2

"More of the same as the previous; the variable threshold comparator is great for breaking up the signal into shards. Super!"

Effector 13 Devi Ever Synth Mangler Fuzz Pedal

via this auction
"This is a Synth Mangler that was built before Ooh-La-La started building them. It's got two Soda Meiser fuzzes stacked on top of each other, with volume controls and switches for hiss and chaos on each fuzz. The joystick morphs the tone of the two fuzzes. Talk about a wicked fuzz!

This pedal has appeared in at least one Nine Inch Nails in-studio video as far as I know. It is incredibly easy to achieve the exact same guitar sound as the song “1,000,000” (I'm convinced that Trent probably used a SM on that song). This fuzz also sounds great with all kinds of pedals before and after it, and will even generate some great noise on its own if you fool around with it for a bit. I like to completely overdrive my signal with it and send it screaming into my amp for a sort of “Jack White on steroids” fuzz sound."

Steiner/Crumar EVI–Analog Synthesizer Breath Controller

via this auction
"This is the amazing sounding Steiner Electronic Valve Instrument, a wind synth with trumpet fingering, glide, full scaling and octave range. Basically an analog synthesizer with a breath controller for volume AND tone control (via one of the BEST analog filter circuits EVER!) Square, pulse and sawtooth waves, with PWM (via breath control) and vibrato as well, via a thumb-control on the bottom of the instrument.
The sonic possibilities of this instrument go WAY beyond what is possible with a trumpet Self contained controller and synth module closes up into a small carrying case with handle! These were extremely well made, by Crumar of Italy."

KORG MINIPOPS 20 S HQ SOUND

YouTube via AnalogAudio1
"Jamming around with the Korg / Keio Minipops 20s.

The Korg Minipops 20s is an early rhythmbox from Korg. It's the only one Mini Pops model which has stereo outputs. Different sounds come from the two outputs - that's great! I used them like single outputs with different effects in the video.

I used a Yamaha ProR3 reverb and a delay from Roland DEP-5. On the second half of the video I sent one of the outputs through an old ELECTRO HARMONIX HOT TUBES.

I love the Minipops boxes - I recently bought the 20S. Now I have them all :-)"

Livewire Vulcan with reset mod

YouTube via intellijel
"Demo of a mod done to the Livewire Vulcan to allow independent reset of the two LFOs.
To the right of the Vulcan you can see a 4HP panel with the two jacks mounted, behind this is a circuit board designed to interface to the Vulcan and process incoming triggers. Jack1 is normalled to Jack 2 so that one cable can trigger both resets.

Modules used:
MFB SEQ-01 (provides the triggers)
Livewire AFG (single oscillator that is being modulated)
QMMG (not doing anything until the later parts where I modulate its in LPG mode)
Doepfer VCA (just being used as an attenuator)

The SEQ-01 could be replaced by any source of rhythmic triggers including gates from your midi to cv converter.

The demo starts with no sync and simple modulation and then I start to patch more complex triggers and cross mod.

Sorry for the poor quality! I forgot to turn on the camera light.... future videos will be better :)

Also this mod is not for sale but I can provide instructions... it is not for beginners though. I plan to add switches for selecting mod sources and jacks to patch in external CV to the SUM/DIFF/MAX/MIN circuits"

circuit bent yamaha mu5, dsi evolver, and akai ewi

YouTube via spunkytoofers
"circuit bent yamaha mu5 multi-timbral portable midi tone generator. midi implementation is basic but has very flexible multi-timbral setups for any midi controller or external sequencer.

in this demo the ewi can control two independant midi channels at once. mu5 assigned 2 tones per midi channel and it's internally panned in stereo. the signal is fed into the dsi's stereo filters which is summed back into mono. i'm able to place more emphasis on each midi channel by midi panning of the stereo filters with a pedal controller. this creates a rich malleable sound with just the mu5 alone.

besides the evolver's filters and amps being controlled with breath, i'm doing just a little touch of live looping and no other processing is used."

[DIY] SciFi Robot CMOS VCO

YouTube via lastkidontheblock. via this auction

"A little description for international bidders:
The SciFi Robot is a Squarewave VCO with a rudimentary control voltage input. There is one potentiometer for the pitch and one for timbre control (duty cycle). You can also change the pitch with the bodycontacts. You can plug sequencers, midi2cv, etc. into the "CV-In" of the scifi robot, but it is not accurate like a professional VCO (no 1V/octave). You can also plug every active signal of a drumcomputer, synthesizer, computer, mp3-player, etc into the CV-input. So you can use it as fx-device in the effectloop of your mixer.
So you can change every active soundsignal into a squarewave-signal. The output of a drumcomputer will sound like the backgroundmusic in your favorite NES jump 'n run game. But this is just my subjectively estimate. Just listen to the samples! The Robot is powered by one 9v Battery." See this site for more info in German, and YouTube for more vids.

sg-glitchgate

sg-glitchgate
"This is an experimental gating plugin- basically a rhythmic gate, but not set up in the standard way. There are two periodic gates which can be used for anything from regular rhythmic chopping to random rhythmic manipulations and strange dropouts. The gates are followed by a delay unit designed to enhance the glitchiness- it does not sync to tempo, and the delay time and gain can be randomized. There are 5 LFOs to add to the fun. A few presets are included to give you an idea of how things work.

The periodic sequence idea was largely inspired by stuff from xoxos, and uses his "regular" module to provide the pulses used in the gates. See http://www.xoxos.net"

CASIO CZ-1000 HQ SOUND DEMO

YouTube via AnalogAudio1
" The Casio CZ-1000 is a digital synthesizer with the "phase distortion" synthesis. It came out 1985 and it was a lowcost synthesizer with MIDI multimode. The idea was, to develop a digital synth with modern digital sounds, which is easy to program like an analog synth. Indeed, it uses similar terminology (DCO, DCW, DCA) - if you understand the subtractive synthesis, the CZ will be easy to understand. However, the DCW is not a real filter - it is the unit, which distorts the phase. Resonance is not available, but you can produce similar sounds with special waveforms on the DCO.

The CZ-1000 looks like something between Yamaha DX7 and Korg Poly-800. Like the Korg Poly-800, it can run on batteries. The CZ-101 is virtually the same, it just has small keys.

Vince Clarke used to have one in the eighties."

Kawai K3m Oscillator Waveforms

YouTube via rolandsh1000
"Just a short video showing the wavetable oscillator waveforms of the Kawai K3m. To me, this synth is a bit lifeless and cold (though still sounds generally nice) and I wondered why, since it has the terrific ssm2044 analog filters. So I decided to put the oscillators on the scope and this video demonstrates what they look like.

Many of them have a lot of extra high frequency content, and I can hear aliasing noise at low frequencies. Interesting to me is that they didn't include any basic SAW, SQU, PULSE waves, but there are a few very SINE looking waves."
