Theremin Building Party

via Adam
"Back in October fellow Thunder Bay ex-pat Dave Shaw and I conducted a Theremin-building workshop [click for more pics and info] at Articule gallery in Montreal in association with Pop Montreal’s Symposium. It was fun! Best of all, everyone’s instrument worked in the end (about a dozen of them). Well, almost all of them worked. Jenny’s made insane evil droning sounds that weren’t quite right, but cool anyway."

"Particularly cool is the Theremin my co-facilitator built into the case of a wireless router using the router's antennas for pitch control."

They used the Harrison Instruments Minimum Theremin Kit which Adam recommends for beginners.

Anyone know more about the magazine / book?

Update via Dustbunnies in the comments: "I'm pretty certain I've picked up this one and thumbed through it at the local bookstore. IIRC, it looked mostly like your basic "getting started" guide; much in the same vein as those put out once or twice a year by Computer Music magazine. I think it's just a one-off, in any case, since there hasn't been a second issue in several months.

However, I will state that I can't read kanji for crap, so all standard disclaimers apply. But the fact I didn't buy it anyway means that even the pictures weren't telling me anything I didn't already know.

There are a couple of DS-10 guidebooks that have been put into common circulation over here. At least one of these was interesting enough that I did shell out the cash for it. But not this one." image via the KORG DS10 Blog (Googlish)

ChromaKnob - Rhodes Chroma Knob Box

There's been some discussion on the Rhodes Chroma list on creating a knob box for the Rhodes Chroma. The Chroma was ARP's last synth. It's an amazing monster of a poly analog synth with weighted wood velocity sensitive keys. Two things sorely missed are dedicated knobs and aftertouch. Both have been discussed on the list and may actually come some day. There is a CC+ processor upgrade that gives full MIDI sysex support.

The knob box you see sitting on top of the Chroma here is the ChromaKnob. It was a one off knob box created by David Clark. Be sure to see the link for more info and images. While there check out the rest of the site for more. It's an incredible resource to the synth community.

EHX Tube EQ Self Oscillation

YouTube via Analogger
"I was really inspired the other day after watching some videos on the Electro-Harmonix "Effectology" channel. When I saw that the Tube EQ would self-oscillate I headed to Ebay. I may have used it to "eq" something for maybe 30-40 seconds and then it was on to noise making. The EQ went into an EHX Memory Boy and then into the Hardwire TL-2 Metal Distortion pedal. The secret to the rhythmic modulation was patching a four note control voltage sequence from the Doepfer clock sequencer into the expression pedal input of the Tube EQ. The settings I created were not for a guitar per se but about halfway thru I plugged my Strat into the EQ pedal to see how it would sound - kind of gnarly but what the hell.

TWO VOLTAGE RANDOM GENERATOR

EMS STUDIO MODULES

The EMS Range of Ancillary Studio Modules EMS Modules are designed not only for use with Synthi synthesisers but with any complex of voltage controlled equipment, of whatever manufacture. They are supplied in handsome afrormosia cases, but can be removed and mounted in standard 19" racks, occupying only 1.7" (44mm) of vertical space. They contain their own mains power unit with a very wide range of stabilisation to cope with poor mains line conditions, being operable at anything from +10% to more than—23% of nominal line voltage. Connections to and from the modules can be made either from the jack sockets on the front panel or via the multi-way socket at the back.

TWO VOLTAGE RANDOM GENERATOR

The EMS Random Voltage Generator produces a staircase type of output, the 'steps' of which occur randomly, but whose voltage range and time variance are controllable in the following ways:

Time: The internal clock which decides the mean rate of events can be (a) freerunning and subject only to manual control, (b) inhibited so that the next random voltage depends on a manual push button or an external pulse (equivalent to external clock control); (c) free-running but voltage controlled so that an external voltage influences the mean rate. In this state the device becomes a voltage/time converter.

If the time variance control is at zero, the mean rate is constant (though subject to change of steady rate if influenced by a control voltage). As the time variance control is tuned clockwise, the mean time random variance becomes greater, and when this control is at maximum the rate will randomly vary in a ratio of more than 100:1. The distribution of chances is rectangular, not Gaussian, so that no part of the variance range is particularly favoured.

Voltage: Two voltage outputs are available and separately adjustable, but both are subject to the same time control — i.e. the steps of the staircase occur at the same time from both outputs. At zero, there is no voltage variance at all, and as the setting is increased the variance about the mean voltage (set at the device being controlled) becomes greater, excursions being both positive and negative of the mean voltage. In addition, a trigger pulse is sent whenever a random selection is made, and a lamp on the panel glows at the same time.

The random voltage generator can be used for quasi-melodic purposes, for interesting timbre and other parametric changes, or at high speeds for randomly varying vibrato or tremolo (very near simulation of natural, performed vibrato), or for producing very dense textures of rapidly changing notes. A very versatile instrument, essential for any well-equipped electronic music studio.

SPECIFICATION

Power Supply:
240 or 115VAC 50/60Hz + 10% to —23%

Control Outputs:
+/- 2.5V max. (this excursion can be offset to accommodate non-EMS products).

EIGHT-OCTAVE FILTER BANK

EIGHT-OCTAVE FILTER BANK

The EMS Eight-Octave Filter Bank is a group of eight individual resonating filters fixed-tuned one octave apart in the range 62.5Hz—8KHz, arranged in parallel. The unit is inserted into an audio signal line, and since the output of each filter may be separately controlled very subtle variations of colouring can be made. It is simplicity itself to operate, and no voltage control is involved, its purpose being to provide characteristic colourings which are on the whole constant during a particular application. The cut-off is sharp enough to permit sections of the spectrum to be virtually removed, making profound changes in the character of a sound. With all the controls at maximum the signal will emerge unchanged except for a 10dB overall gain. At intermediate settings the response is comblike, levelling out to total rejection of the whole band when all controls are at zero.

A valuable extra facility is the access given by jacks or the facilities socket to each filter separately. The main output contains all the filters in parallel, but in addition the spectral content of the output of each filter is available at the appropriate jack. Thus up to nine simultaneous timbres can be obtained from a single complex signal. An additional use for the filter bank is as a signal improver. Hum or any other unwanted fixed frequency phenomenon can often be removed completely without serious distortion of the signal spectrum.

Apart from its use in electronic music, the eight-octave filter bank is a great asset to any studio; a group of several (at least as many as the number of output lines) can be arranged for instant patching in to any channel needing correction.

SPECIFICATION

Power Supply:
240 or 115VAC 50/60Hz +10% to—23%

Input Level:
6V p-p max.

Max. Overall Gain:
10dB +/- 1.5dB.

Individual Filter Gains:

"Casio SK-1 with a custom midi retrofit from Highly_Liquid. I commissioned Highly_Liquid to build out this mod for me a couple of years back for a project I was working on. More often than not, adding the midi retrofit to a Casio means removing the speaker to make way for the additional board, but in this case I had an external breakout box built so that all of the original characteristics and functionality of the unit remained in tact."

EMS Synthi 100 starting at 100GBP no reserve

via Peter Forest:
"The Synthi 100 that didn't get a bid in the last VEMIA now has to be sold without reserve, so if you'd like to be able to say you once bid on a Synthi 100, now's your chance. Since the bid will include full servicing we're relying on it getting a bit higher than the 100GBP start bid.

http://www.spheremusic.com/Bargaindtl.asp?Item=7459 - bidding ends a week today, Thursday 17 Dec, at or very soon after 20.00 UK time (GMT)." images here be sure to click on All Sizes followed by Original for the full glory.

Auction Description:
"START BID £100, no reserve; to be sold FULLY SERVICED by EMS experts Lucid Sound - ** the bid includes the servicing cost**. AUCTION ENDS 20.00 GMT OR SOON AFTER, THURSDAY DECEMBER 17. This wonderful Synthi 100, serial number 3007, was owned originally by Bruno Spoerri, and was the first ever to be sold to a private studio. He used it for many years. At some stage he decided he wanted some more variety within this massive system, and changed some (maybe 10%) of the modules' circuitry to more modern analogue designs. He also added some interesting and useful additional mods. Because of the modular nature of the beast (all the important boards are contained within card-frames for simple removal and work) it would be very possible to return these to their original design - all parts are still readily available. But our feeling is that it would be good to start with Bruno's mods intact, and only change back if they proved not to be useful or interesting. The winning bidder can decide what he or she prefers - if necessary after discussion with Lucid as the servicing proceeds. The bid will include complete servicing to Bruno's modded spec, whereas returning the machine to original factory spec might possibly involve some extra expense, payable to Lucid Sound. After Bruno Spoerri, it was owned by Felix Visser of Synton, who bought it as one of the centrepieces of a massive museum planned for the Netherlands. The museum never happened, and so he sold it 18 months ago. The new owner unfortunately has hit a crisis which involved having to move out of his current studio and home without having been able to use it once, and so the Synthi is up for sale again. It is in very good cosmetic condition. There is some cosmetic marking where damage to one of the massive pin matrices has been repaired - see the photo - and a small amount of corrosion on the right of the serial number panel. Apart from that, and the odd scuffs and marks consistent with its 35 years' life (including on the padded top), it is really lovely. The 'producer desk' in between the two matrices has been repaired and re-tolexed and looks great. All knobs are beautiful; all keys on the twin-manual keyboard are excellent. There are a lot of photos of this machine at http://www.flickr.com/photos/73278691@N00/ (or http://www.flickr.com/photos/matrixsynth/sets/72157622974821168/. The photos are poorly organised but do show most aspects of this gorgeous instrument. This is totally complete: it comes with the stand for the keyboards, the back panels, sliding front panels for the Synthi stand, a generous number of matrix pins (including some for the sequencer) - well into three figures, we think - and the original manuals, massive tomes like old bibles. This is the eighth out of less than 30 of these incredible machines, and one of very few (just 3 or 4?) to go to a private studio, so much less likely to be abused during its life by a succession of careless students or employees. Servicing will take a maximum of three months from the end of the auction - the hope is to do it more quickly, but three months is the worst case scenario.) The winning bidder will receive regular progress reports from Lucid. Payment: because of the considerable value we hope this will reach (exceptionally rare, beautiful, and fully serviced), there are special payment arrangements. 10% **non-returnable** deposit to be paid within 24 hours of the auction finish, by bank transfer, credit or debit card (or UK cheque by agreement) - and then the rest by bank transfer or UK cheque within 14 days of the auction finish. SHIPPING: we are willing to ship worldwide, with the buyer paying for crating and transport (and of course any import costs). We will also offer personal delivery in the UK mainland, northern France, Belgium, Holland, and possibly other countries, depending on distance."

Moog Music and Paste Magazine Debut a New Performance Series, Live At Moog

"Series launches with Yo La Tengo, White Rabbits, Matisyahu, and more

DECEMBER 10th, 2009 - ASHEVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA - Today Moog Music Inc. and Paste Magazine launched an innovative new web video series featuring performances filmed at the legendary Moog Music factory in Asheville, North Carolina. The series kicks off with a performance from quintessential rock innovators Yo La Tengo. Bands were given access to the Moog factory to explore and experiment with the dozens of synthesizers, guitars and effect pedals designed and manufactured here. Often the artists rearrange their songs to showcase the otherworldly sounds of Moog's instruments, yielding a performance unlike any other.

Each week a new session will debut on Paste's homepage. The first season features Brooklyn indie rockers White Rabbits, reggae star Matisyahu, New York jazz trio Medeski, Martin and Wood, songwriters Erin McKeown and Jill Sobule, live-electronica artist Pretty Lights, Widespread Panic keyboardist Jojo Hermann, jam-rock stalwarts moe. and the aforementioned Yo La Tengo. The series will continue with a second season debuting in the spring. Each episode features multiple songs, behind-the-scenes footage, and exclusive info on each band.

For many musicians, a visit to the Moog Music factory is the equivalent to a kid going to Willy Wonka's chocolate factory. "It's been great to see bands like Yo La Tengo, or White Rabbits, who have varying experience with Moog instruments, come in empty handed and eager to see what they can do with the gear," says Zac Altheimer, Marketing Director for Music Allies, the Asheville-based company producing the series. "We've captured some really amazing performances that differ greatly from the band's albums or typical stage show." Moog Music President Mike Adams agrees, "This experience has opened the ears of the bands that have visited to the sonic possibilities available with Moog gear. The bands and their fans will benefit from these free ranging musical explorations which have initial exposure here at PasteMagazine.com."

Live at Moog can be viewed at www.pastemagazine.com/moog or www.liveatmoog.com

Synthesizer - Hand Sewn From Felt

"This is another piece of mine, one that I am especially proud of.

It is a meticulously hand sewn representation of a synthesizer that my mother purchased for me when I was young, (13 perhaps?). I still own that synth today, and it even works sometimes. Despite all the smoke it emits!

This handmade felt fridge magnet is about the size of a business card. Maybe just slightly larger."

Theremin And Electric Kantele

YouTube via copperleaves

"I call this composition LEMMENKAINEN'S DREAM. Lemmenkainen was one of the heroes in the Finnish national epic known as the KALEVALA. The writer of The Lord Of The Rings, J. R. R. Tolkien, based much of his vision of Middle Earth on ideas and images from the Kalevala which he had read as a teenager. He liked it so much he actually learned Finnish in order to read the book in its native language, and later went on to invent a language entirely of his own (the language of the Elves called "Quenya") which was based on Finnish.

The kantele (pronounced "kan - teh - leh") is the national instrument of Finland and belongs to the family of instruments known as "psalteries". The one you see in this video is a 38 string, steel strung, electric kantele. It's magnetic pickups (which are eight inches long) were custom made by Jason Lollar for Bart Hopkin of Experimental Musical Instruments. If you are curious about them, visit Bart's website, windworld.com.

The kantele is an extremely resonant instrument and larger "concert" models are provided with a damper consisting of a thick felt strip similar to what you might find on a piano, in order to mute the strings. I left the damper box open in the middle part of this video so you could see what it looks like. These electroacoustic kanteles bear little resemblance to the traditional 5 and 10 string folk instruments but they open up all sorts of doors for modern musicians. The high tension and steel strings on the instrument in this video allow me, if I wish, to play the kantele with a bar which I hold in my left hand. Players of steel guitars and of certain traditional instruments of India also play in this way. The effect of it is a very pure and strangely lonely "northern" sound which I found appropriate for the piece.

The theremin I used is a Moog Etherwave Pro."

"After last christmas a threw out my trusty old plastic christmas tree as it was getting rather dilapidated. But somehow I wanted something different this year. I decided to make a Jean-Michel Jarre inspired window decoration!

I bought some wood and cut out a set of keys to form a circular keyboard. Then I painted them and installed a handfull of red LEDs. A sequencing circuit from my "box of opportunities" was used as a driver. And now I have a red glowing semi-circular wooden keyboard christmas decoration in my kitchen window.

The music is played on the Elka X-1000 organ and a set of sleigh bells. The melody is called "This is Christmas" and was originally play by the Danish duo "Laid Back" in the late 80's."

Fill eight live tracks with eight devices to fill the grid. Each sequence has independent time control for a huge variety of rhythmic possibility.
And, if you make it to the end, yes, the irritation at those who don't use a Livid controller is real and palpable :)

Tx802

Tx802 by plexus instruments
"Tx802, polyphonically routed to Studio Electronics Omega. A little bit of reverb. Some overload of the Olympus Ls10 recorder in the beginning. Start with the Oberheim LP, then Oberheim BP, then Cs80 filters. Towards the end sine and triangle oscillator brought in. In the middle, filter cross modulation is brought in.

Keyboard skills are lacking here."

cyndustries free ring tones

This is pretty funny. Via Cynthia on the cyndustries mailing list:

"Now I've seen everything... Someone has created custom ring tones for cell phones using our sound samples and bits of music from the Bug Music contests!

I suppose we should be flattered...

Get your wacky through zero ring tones now, lol

New! SevenUpLive 2.0 Component - Mind Shuffler

New! SevenUpLive 2.0 Component - Mind Shuffler from bar|none on Vimeo.
"This not a performance but is a quick and dirty demonstration of MindShuffler which allows you to slice live audio streams. These could be truly live or they could a looping clip or drum machine. Because of these characteristics, we are able to change tempo on the fly while slicing and use Live's warp engine to maintain pitch on the loop.

Audio starts at 0.39

If this is too techy for you. Here's a real track made with SevenUpLive 2.0."

This is my track off of the Oxytocin compilation released by us at Harmonix in Cambridge, MA. We had a CD release party/show at Middlesex Lounge in Cambridge, MA on Monday, 06/08/09, and it was a huge success. I performed using Live 8 with a Novation Remote 25 MIDI controller and a Monome 64. I also provided visuals for the whole show using Andrew Benson's video processing patch, which I modded and added MIDI functionality to. Great success!"
