Blofeld Bounce and a Blofeld Tip

Blofeld Bounce by Birds in Branches
"Another one, blofeld desktop (no sample upgrade) for everything, including drums.

Basic compression and mix eq only.

I never used to make 'single synth' tracks, but it is too much fun to resist with the Blofeld.

Listening back, I don't think there is any FM, Comb Filters or even many Wavetables. So it's almost a virtual analog demo. I guess these things sound great even when ignoring the advanced tricks.

Find that download button, it sounds better as a proper 192kb/s mp3, only 7.7mb.

Cheers,

Adam."

Tip: "One pleasant surprise was found in multimode when mapping some CC's from my nord stage knobs to control blofeld parameters in realtime. I can use the blofeld knobs to edit one part at a time, while the midi CC's make the changes to all parts at once."

Update: some highlights from synchro1: "- *THE* highlight was seeing someone tinkering with a prototype module for a demo and realizing it was Mike Brown [Livewire] and the expander modulefor the AFGs. Mike looks well and it was great to speak with him again.

- new digital polyphonic synth from Mungo [State Zero]. Very intriguing and lots of modular possibilities as almost everything has external CV capability. Great ergonometric design, sound (in noisy NAMM environment) reminded me a bit of my SunSyn. And it is quite expensive but there is an awful lot in there. Number of photos at the link below.

- Bob Amstadt is showing the new LP-2 MINI Looper [Looperlative]. Essentially a single channel mono looper with many of the abilities of the amazing LP-1.

- Monorocket cases look great.

- Make Noise X/Y sequencer and capacitance-sensitive keypads are very intriguing - ordered 2 of the keypad modules.

- Flight of Harmony Sound of Shadows on display but did not have a chance to play with it yet."

NOT NAMM: OTO Biscuit

This one in via Navs. Not sure when info on this came out, so I'll give it the NOT NAMM tag as I'm sure it will be new to some including me.

Via SchneidersBuero:
"BISCUIT is a stereo sound effect processor. Thanks to a subtle blend of 8-bit digital and analog processing, BISCUIT is able to create a wide range of sounds. It goes from 8-bit character and lo-fi digital artefacts to numeric distortions. BISCUIT is very useful to add depth and texture to any kind of electronic sounds. It works best with synthesizers (digital or analog), bassline, drum machines, loops, samplers or computers, but you can use it with any other sources. BISCUIT is basically an enhanced bit depth and sample-rate reducer, known as "bitcrusher", followed by an analog filter and a simple mixing section (dry/wet). It also offers other features like removing or inverting each of the 8 bits, changing the sample rate from 250Hz to 30kHz, or adding one of the four effects (waveshaper, delay, pitch shifter and step filter). Biscuit is MIDI compatible. You can save the whole BISCUIT settings (potentiometers and switches) in 16 presets. A SysEx dump function let you save and recall as many presets you want on your computer. Features • Stereo inputs and outputs • Input gain from -? to 15 dB with diode clipping • Real 8-bit Analog to Digital and Digital to Analog converters • Unique capability of muting and inverting each of the 8 bits • Variable sample clock from 250 Hz to 30 kHz • True analog multimode filter with resonance control • FX section: Waveshaper, Delay, Pitch Shifter and Step Filter • Separate control of dry and 8-bit signals • 16 presets • MIDI : Continuous Controller, Beat Clock, Program Change and Sysex for presets • True relay Bypass • Rugged metallic Neutrik© jacks • Built like a tank: Thick metal case and strong build • Dimensions: 190mm x 60mm x 117mm / 7.48" x 2.36" x 4.60" (W x D x H) • Weight: 580g / 1.27 lbs"

ELECTRA MELODICA by Hohner from 1967

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

Translation via Matthias:

"This is not just an amplified Melodica - even sound synthesis is done completely electronically. While the outside looks like a normal melodica, this is in fact one of the first monophonic analog synthesizers - with a wind controller: a diaphragm is moved and more or less covers a photocell, which controls the volume envelope of the sound.

6 different tone colours can be set, along with a switchable band-pass filter to give the sound an I-, A- or U-staining. These filters can be altered with a continuous push-button according to a wah-wah effect (curiously labeled "bow-wow"). Through a 5-stop octave switch the scope of the 3-octave keyboard can be expanded to 8 octaves. There is also a vibrato effect with adjustable amplitude and frequency. 2 knobs are used to tune the instrument (pitch and splay).

This belongs to an external power supply-amplifier combination, which already own some preying and looks like a Fritz Lang movie.

The Electra Melodica was used in 1968 by the band "The Lovin 'Spoonful," but was probably too innovative for its time, so that a total of only 600 units were produced. The major weakness was the sensitive membrane, which got broken soon in many instruments.

This copy will not only work, but is also in surprisingly good condition - it was apparently played little. On the exterior there are almost no scratches, only the lettering is rubbed off a little. The interior is clean, all controls are working properly without scratching. Of course, all the keys work. In the upper quarter of the keyboard 4 keys sound about a semitone too high. However, these can be tuned - the curcuit board contains a trim potentiometer for each key.

The complete range of accessories is available: Connection cable Melodica - power supply / amplifier, output cable (6.3 mm jack), power cord, leather shoulder strap, 2 different mouthpieces, replacement lamps for photo diode and operating lights. All this is housed in a beautiful, sturdy case."

"Mutron Bi-Phase with pedal, circa 1977. a/c powered. Two independent phase shifters housed in a large silver box with big knobs. The worlds largest phase shifter! Settings include independent control over 2 phasors, 2 sweep generators with rate and shape (~ wave or square wave), manual or pedal option, Phasor A with depth and feedback plus gen 1 or pedal switch for sweep. Phasor B has more controls. Depth and feedback plus sweep sync option of norm or rev(erse) and sweep option of either gen1, gen2 or ped(al) and Phasor B input consisting of inA, outA or inB! Giant placards that fit over the housing include red marked settings for 3 effects examples: Stereo Phasing, Super Phasing and Two-Speed Phasing! This unit delivers the quintessential phasing sounds used in the 70's from the airplane-type whooshing sounds to the slow wide flanger-type effects. Adds fatness to clean sounds, great for ballad arpeggiating picking styles all the way to thickening an already distorted sound for added effect. Muted picking on power chords with gain to disco era octaves, this one delivers the goods. Plus, two-speed phasing yields some funkitized possibilities. Set one phasor slow and the other fast and the skies the limit. A favorite setting is the leslie cabinet sound from fast rate and moderate setting with little to no feedback. Then there's the classic setting of slower rate with much depth and feedback for reaching spatial territories! A quick way back to 1975 or ahead to 2050!"

Stompolin

YouTube via mikerotondo
"When the guitar is too sexy and the piano makes too much sense, it's time to stick a bunch of sensors to your body with electrical tape and plug it all into your computer!

This is the Stompolin, and I made it at a Physical Interaction Design workshop at CCRMA (http://ccrma.stanford.edu) this summer.

How it works:

There's a small electret microphone attached to my foot, and two bend sensors on my arm: one in my elbow, and one on my finger. The signals from each of these are routed through an Arduino microcontroller into a Max/MSP patch.

The microphone output is routed through a percussion follower, and impulses (like stomps) trigger the instrument's tone generation. The sound of the instrument is created by a a plucked string model and some ADSR'd harmonized sine waves. If the impulse picked up by the mic is heavy in high frequencies, the sound is captured and "granulated" around a bit at a random interval.

The bend sensor on my finger controls the pitch of the tones, and the elbow controls the cutoff frequency of a low-pass filter. When the pitch is being actively modulated by finger movement, the tone slides smoothly across frequencies, but when the finger is moved more slowly or stopped, the pitch is quantized to tones of a major scale."

Featuring eight trigger pads, built-in sounds, multi-effects, and external trigger inputs, the OCTAPAD SPD-30 is the perfect portable electronic percussion instrument for any playing application.

Using the latest trigger technology from Roland’s industry-leading V-Drums®, the pads on the OCTAPAD SPD-30 feature an extremely natural and responsive playing feel. The eight separate trigger surfaces provide superior dynamic response, trigger consistency over a pad’s entire surface, and the elimination of crosstalk.

The OCTAPAD SPD-30 includes 50 kits and hundreds of cutting-edge drum and percussion sounds. Powerful onboard effects include 30 types of multi-effects that can be used on individual kits, and Ambience with an Equalizer and Limiter that can be applied to the overall OCTAPAD SPD-30 sound.

"The new Roland Octapad SPD-30 from
the NAMM 2010.
Michael Schack
Roland Info:
Rolands original Octapad profoundly changed the landscape of electronic percussion. The size of a briefcase, the Octapad offered drummers and percussionists the equivalent of an entire electronic rig in one self-contained unit — a new level of convenience and expression. Today, decades later, an exciting new chapter in Octapad history begins. The SPD-30 blends the worlds most essential sounds with the latest triggering technology in a road-tough package thats ready for the most demanding performers. * Packed with new percussion sounds from around the world, plus 30 types of multi-effects * The latest pad-sensing technology developed for V-Drums provides even and accurate pad triggering with excellent isolation between pads * Four dual-trigger inputs plus hi-hat controller for adding pads to create a mini kit, or for accepting triggers from acoustic drums * Phrase Loop function inspires your creativity; record your playing in real time and overdub up to three layers * USB connectivity for MIDI and memory storage * Large backlit LCD and pad indicator lights for easy operation onstage or in any environment * Rugged, road-worthy design

Sound Bank

Unlike the original Octapad PAD-8, which was strictly a MIDI controller, the Octapad SPD-30 is a controller thats packed with its own internal bank of sounds. Fifty kits are built into the SPD-30 — essential sounds that span a musical universe of styles. You can customize the sounds with the onboard controls for tuning, muffling, attack, pitch sweep, and more. Its like having a truckload of customizable drum and percussion instruments in one portable package.
Multi-Effects

Based on Rolands world-leading effects technology, the SPD-30s multi-effects engine will take your performances to another level. There are 30 types of internal multi-effects onboard, plus EQ, limiter, and seven Ambience types.
Phrase Loop Function

The onboard Phrase Loop function lets you instantly create layered loops and phrases. You can record and store 50 phrases internally, with each containing up to three layers. You can also save your phrase data to optional USB memory.
Advanced Triggering Technology

The Octapad SPD-30 benefits from Rolands most advanced V-Drum triggering technology. Each pad is a separate, isolated unit, providing the ultimate in sensitivity with complete crosstalk rejection. In addition, you can connect four dual-trigger inputs plus a hi-hat controller (compatible with Roland FD-8, VH-11) to create a mini drum set with external pads (Roland KD / PD / PDX / CY series), as well as to accept triggers from acoustic drums through Rolands RT series."

NAMM: ROLAND ANNOUNCES KC-110 STEREO KEYBOARD AMPLIFIER

"Los Angeles, CA, January 14, 2010 — The latest addition to Roland’s industry-leading KC-Series keyboard amplifier lineup is the KC-110 Stereo Keyboard Amplifier. It combines two industry firsts for a portable keyboard amp—AA battery-powered operation and true stereo sound—with a host of additional features that make it flexible for a variety of performance applications.

The KC-110 features 30 watts of stereo power driving two 6.5" woofers and two tweeters. Most modern keyboards feature stereo sound output, and the KC-110 enables musicians to experience the full, rich stereo sound of their instruments while using a small amp. Power can be supplied with eight AA batteries (including NiMH rechargeable types) or AC power, and there’s even a removable battery case for quick and easy battery replacement.

Featuring a multi-channel mixer with a Mic/Line input, two stereo inputs, and two AUX inputs for connecting devices such as MP3 or CD players, this versatile amplifier is suitable for compact PA applications as well as keyboards. High-quality stereo digital effects are also built in, allowing performers to sweeten their sound with reverb, chorus, or a special “wide” chorus effect.

Compact size, battery operation, and superb stereo sound make the KC-110 the perfect portable keyboard amp for nearly any playing situation, from primary amplification duty in intimate settings such as coffee houses, restaurants, or street performances to personal monitoring on large stages. The KC-110 also features an integrated tilt stand for enhanced sound projection, as well as a pole mount for use with the optional ST-A95 speaker stand when maximum coverage is needed.

The KC-110 is scheduled to ship in February with a suggested retail price of $499.00. For more information, please visit www.RolandConnect.com."

NAMM: Update to Yamaha Tenori-On Firmware

Not sure if this one actually is NAMM, but I haven't posted the details so here they are. Previous post mentioning an update was coming posted back on Nov 5 here.

"Content of Update
1 - Tighter operation
Through internal software refinements the Yamaha engineers have successfully improved the overall processing performance, giving the Tenori-On player the experience of a ‘tighter’ and more instantaneous real-time performance instrument.
2 - Improved MIDI sync
A high percentage of Tenori-On owners use their instrument in conjunction with a computer-based DAW. This combination gives maximum sonic versatility. The new Version 2.0 firmware now responds to the F2 MIDI Song Position Pointer message allowing it to be seamlessly integrated into all popular DAW systems.
3 - Global Mute
Its now simple to Globally Mute the Tenori-On audio output for all tracks by using R4 and L1 top panel buttons. This allows performers, especially when using the Tenori-On with a DAW, to create dramatic mutes (and unmutes) via shortcut keys, without having to enter the deeper menu architecture of the Tenori-On.
4 - Reset Loop Timing
When changing loop speeds and accessing the unique Tenori-On layer loop points, its possible to have different tracks running out of sync with each other. This can create a unique musical feel however, at some musical moment, its good to be able to reset all loop points. In the original Tenori-On firmware this feature was buried deep within the menu structures however, with Version 2.0, this is now available from the top panel buttons. Simply by hitting the combination of L4 and R1 all tracks will reset to their original loop timing points.
5 - User Scale
A feature that has been highly requested by the Tenori-On enthusiasts is the ability to expand and edit the instruments global note scaling. Rather than being confined to a range of 16 consecutive notes per layer, its now possible to create a global ‘User Scale’ allowing different notes from different octaves to be accessed and sequenced within one single layer. This new function will open up many new musical dimensions for the Tenori-On player as any note can now be assigned to a layer.
6 - Swing
With a new ‘Swing’ function implemented in Version 2.0 its now possible to give the entire instrument a new level of musical ‘feel’. With a -23/+23 swing parameter its also possible to fine tune this ‘feel’ using the jog wheel in real-time. The new Swing feature is especially creative when Slaved to an external DAW as it allows the Tenori-On to swing while the DAW remains rigid."

NAMM: ROLAND ANNOUNCES VP-7 VOCAL PROCESSOR

"Los Angeles, CA, January 14, 2010 — Now every keyboardist, regardless of vocal ability, can sing with the new VP-7 Vocal Processor from Roland. This portable processor sets up quickly on top of keyboards with free panel space and creates ensemble vocal sounds with a variety of PCM-based vocal sounds, or with Roland’s superior Vocal Designer® technology.

For keyboardists who want lush vocal backing tracks without singing into a microphone, the compact VP-7 includes four rich and expressive human voice sounds — Female Choir, Boys Choir, Gregorian Choirs and Jazz Scat — just by playing the keyboard.

Utilizing Vocal Designer technology derived from Roland’s Vocal & Ensemble keyboards, the VP-7 has three Vocal Designer algorithms that can automatically generate multi-voice backing harmonies that sing the same lyrics as a performer sings into the included DR-HS5 headset microphone. Keyboardists that sing lead vocals can blend the VP-7’s sounds with their own voice to create impressive backing. Or, when harmonizing with a lead vocalist, the VP-7’s sound can be blended with the live vocal harmony or used with 100% processing. The Vocoder button also lets you instantly switch to a vintage vocoder.

The VP-7’s super-simple interface features large, quick-access buttons and knobs, so it’s easy to call up preset sounds and adjust blends on the fly. Onboard ambience effects sweeten the sound with the twist of a knob, while a handy mute switch lets the user bring the VP-7’s processing in and out with the push of a button.

The VP-7 is scheduled to ship in May. For more information, please visit www.RolandConnect.com."
