Jomox JaZBase 03 1U Drum Synthesizer

via this auction

Not the best shots, but you don't see these often.

"The Jomox JaZBase 03 is a very convenient device: the
percussion sounds of an Xbase but in a 1U rack device.

This is almost identical to the Airbase 99: bass drum, snare drum, hi and low toms, hats, clap, rim shot, crash and ride. Bass, snare and toms are all analog, like with everything Jomox.

The spare samples in the AirBase 99 are different in the JaZBase for a unique edge: 24 acoustic drum samples - very nice for the junglists out there. The JaZBase has adjustable start points for each sample as well - very nice. The 808 hats are still here in the JaZBase so do not fear. "

Thank You Rain

Ocean Orbit Interview on Neon Tuesdays

"Andy Cousins and Dmitry Shklyar of Ocean Orbit have been rocking out parties for the last year with their indie/dance live sets. Their Nintendo influenced sounds are as original as their name. They’ve released an album last year and I can promise you that you will hear a lot about Ocean Orbit in the near future. They are technical wizards when it comes to hardware tweaking and if you see them play live, you’ll definitely see them rock out the original Nintendo Entertainment System! Come see them at the grand opening of Neon Tuesdays @ Tonic Room (2447 N. Halsted) on February 23! I’m proud to have them booked as our first live guest!"

Tom Oberheim SEM Frequency Modulation Noodles

YouTube via zibbybone
"Not too many videos feturing this new classic synth, so I thought I whip one up. I normally don't mess around with modular synths and the strange noises they can make, but here's my lame attempt using the new patch panel Synthesizer Expander Module. I guess using the SEM in this fashion, it can be up to a 4 operator FM synth: self-oscillating filter as carrier, 2 traditional oscillators and LFO as modulators. I think the way I have it configured in most instances is OSC 2 modulating the resonant filter, OSC 1 modulating OSC 2 and LFO modulating pulse widths and such. I'm using my Roland Fantom X6 as MIDI cotroller with Kenton Pro 2 as MIDI to CV/Gate converter. I'm also using the Fantom's advanced arpeggiator and its built-in multi effects processors."

"My old Plague Bearer seemed to be off, Flight was cool enough to send me a new one to compare it to and it is indeed malfunctioning. Trying out the new filter ended up with the patch which I quite liked. Smooth Osc and Stepped outs of a Wogglebug FM'ing a Z3000, into the PB, all the PB CV's are being driven by a Doepfer Quad AR/LFO (and the EoA out is clocking the 'Bug). A bit of 'melody' is introduced with a Cloud Generator run through the old funky PB."

Paia OZ

via this auction

"The Paia Oz is a way-cool little polyphonic mini-synthesizer from Paia’s pioneering 1970’s line of analog synths. The 1 1/3-octave keyboard is fully polyphonic, and has a selectable five-octave range. It has a selectable spike or pulse trigger, and signal ins and outs to interface with envelope generators and other analog gear. The original manual is included (I grabbed it from the Paia web site). I am the second owner of this unit, which I have had since 1993.

The Oz was designed to run on a fistful of AA batteries, but the enterprising previous owner of this one built in an AC power supply, which works quite well. He also added a headphone or speaker output (left front, below the “Paia”) that automatically interrupts the built-in speaker when a plug is present. Use a mono-to-stereo mini-plug converter with stereo headphones."

"Everything works on this unit except the indicator LED for the lowest octave setting. The capacitive pitch-bend pad needs to be replaced—I’ll bet you can still get one from Paia—but it works fine without it, and the wire it connects to is still there: I’m holding it in the last picture. It’s supposed to come out through the little rubber grommet on the lower left front. Should be a fun project.

This is a no reserve auction with free shipping in the U.S., and the unit, being vintage, is offered as-is."

Doepfer A-143-2 Quad ADSR controlling 3 LPGs

Doepfer A-143-2 Quad ADSR controlling 3 LPGs from katavist on Vimeo.

"This is a fairly basic (and visually boring, sorry) demo of the A-143-2, showing one of many possible uses. The patch was rather complex with Wiard Malekko Anti-Oscillator as the only audio-source, Wiard Malekko Borg Filter in LPG mode, PlanB Model 13 (both gates), MakeNoise Maths voltage mirroring MFB Dual LFO random output - this output and the mirrored cv were mixed by a Doepfer A-138c Polarizing Mixer (with additional inputs from diy 8 step sequencer and Bugbrand Ctl-1 as 4 step 3 track sequencer) all controlling Anti-Osc pitch… Model 13 SUM-output also into Doepfer A-188-1 4096 stages BBD whose output was filtered by Wiard Joyrider double Borg and finally sent to the Blacet Time Machine. First output from Model 13 into Doepfer A-137-1 Wave Multiplier I (which was fed 4 cvs from A-144 Morphing Controller modulated by A-147 VC LFO and then into diy spring reverb... plus some more senseless Maths patching and whatever I forgot... Ah, and thanks to TipTop for the wonderful stackcables!"

Buchla 259e Mem Skew

YouTube via boobtube356
"259e morph gets EG modulation again. This time the memory skew point is modulated continuously using the 259e modulation osc through the 210e. The depth of the modulation is being adjusted on the 210e."

Buchla 259e Bells

"Same patch with modification. Now 259e output is going to 285e balanced modulator where it is modulated by 259e mod osc triangle. Mod osc of 261e takes over mem skew modulation. EG also modulates 285e depth (timbre). This is a nice trick to try."

In A Monastery Garden - THEREMIN

YouTube via copperleaves
"One of the very first theremin recordings ever made was thereminist Lennington Shewell's transcription of British composer Albert Ketelbey's hugely popular 1915 composition, IN A MONASTERY GARDEN. It was released in 1930 by RCA at virtually the same time as they began to distribute the first RCA theremins.

This is a wonderful piece of magnificently schmaltzy, unabashedly sentimental, early 20th century "light" program music and it launched Ketelbey into the forefront of the popular composers of his day and made him one of Britain's first music millionaires. This piece of music was wildly popular and would have been very familiar to our great grandparents. We need to remember that it was written after the start of World War I, and Europeans were reeling from the tragedy and brutality of the destruction of the world they had known.

The score calls for birdsong, chapel bells, an organ, and for a chorus of monks to be heard singing "Kyrie Eleison" (a phrase from the Greek meaning, "Lord, have mercy") in a nearby cloister. The monks' voices were to be (according to the original score) the "gentlemen of the orchestra" who were required not only to play their instruments but to sing as well!

Here's what Ketelbey himself wrote about this composition: "The first theme represents a poet's reverie in the quietude of the monastery garden amidst beautiful surroundings - the calm serene atmosphere - the leafy trees and the singing birds. The second theme in the minor expresses the more personal note of sadness, of appeal and contrition. Presently, the monks are heard chanting "Kyrie Eleison" with the organ playing and the chapel bell ringing. The first theme is now heard in a quieter manner as if it had become more ethereal and distant; the singing of the monks is again heard - it becomes louder and more insistent, bringing the piece to a conclusion in a glow of exultation".

The theremin in this video is a Moog Ethervox and I used it not only for the melody but also for the birdsong. The voices of the monks singing "Kyrie Eleison" are me singing into a Digitech VOCALIST."
