MIDI Timing and Dedicated Hardware

Nice shot of the Akai ASQ-1 sequencer via Hexfix93. Click here for a write-up on Hex's take on MIDI timing.

"I started using hardware synths and drum machines ages ago in tandem with my Atari ST computer. The atari ST had built in midi ports. With notator or cubase software on the atari, you could get midi jitter down to about 1 to 3 ms. This is just right and sounds super tight. Even with one midi out daisy chaining through all the midi throughs of my synths, the songs I made had this syncopated musical sound that I just do not feel and hear today."

Malekko Wiard Borg Filter x 2

via Josh

"Malekko is now offering the Borg filter in two flavors. The Borg2 (black knobs) and now the original Borg (white knobs) The difference is amazing, two great filter choices with two different textures, tones and feel. Get a faster aggressive response with the Borg2, or the nice ring, almost haunting of the original...or both..you choose!"

First build test - Noise Hero lofi noise maker (previously known as ill logic)

YouTube via ChrisLody
"First build test of my Noise Hero (previously known as ill logic)

Noise hero is a little 4093 based noise maker which will be available to buy shortly from my etsy shop prebuilt and as a kit http://www.symetricolour.etsy.com. I may also produce a boxed version depending on demand.

It is controlled by 5 knobs, 8 switches and one push button.

It has 3 oscillators (Yellow, Green and Blue knobs). Osc 1 produces audio frequency ranges whilst osc 2 and 3 produce LFO and audio freqencies.

Osc 1 goes to the output through a simple passive filter (Red knob) while osc 3 can be switched to the output but bypasses the filter.

Osc 3 modulates osc 1's pitch by the ammount set by the orange knob. This modulation can be shaped by 2 shapers which can be switched on and off. Osc 3 can also gate osc 2.

Osc 2 can gate osc 1 and passes through an inverter after which it can gate osc 3.

There is also a push button to trigger the unit (actually a power button), a switch to lock the power on, a power led indicator and a battery cap switch which lets the unit run for a short time after power off for springy type noises.

A certain configuration can even produce sounds that stop after a time determined by osc 3 which is good for maker sound effects.

The knobs all go backward as you may have noticed. This is because I'm using logarithmic knobs which make the oscillators easier to contol when wired up the wrong way round.

This is my first build. Everything works perfectly but I found I'd barely alloed myself enough room to fit everything on the stripboard. I'll make the next one bigger.

I'm keeping this one!"

Moog MG-1 with Mods

via this auction
Note this is the one in this video.
"several modifications to this unit; most of these are very basic but very useful:
* Removed the silly RCA jacks on the back
* Replaced those jacks with new Switchcraft ¼” jacks for:
o Audio Out
o Audio In (to VCF/VCA)
o Gate In (positive voltage trigger > 1V, a more common standard in the synth world than the Moog S-Trig)
o VCF CV In
* Removed the tattered ‘Realistic’ label on the back panel
* Replaced the attached power cord with a more convenient 3-prong IEC connector (easier to transport, easier to store)
* Replaced the red LFO LED with a bright blue LED
* Added ‘Sync Sweep’ functionality

That last modification is something that the MG-1’s sister synth, the Moog Rogue, had, but was left off the MG-1. Here I’ve added a simple switch to the left cheek panel to allow you to switch the Contour (aka Envelope Generator) to sweep the pitch of Oscillator 2. When the two oscillators are not sync’ed, you get Osc 2 pitch ‘swoops’, but when they are sync’ed, you get very cool metallic dynamic timbre changes."

Sync LSDJ with Shitwave

YouTube via RustyNex. Gameboys on Ebay. via Gameboy Genius
"this is a quick mod i made up, it involves a link cable from the LSDJ gameboy to a 74161 counter and then to a CD4024 counter that converts the master clock signal into a tempo signal, this is then fed through various pots so you can control the gain of the signal, attack, decay and to some extent the duty cycle, that is then fed into a LTC1799 which converts the signal back into a clock signal which is fed straight into the CPU of the shitwave gameboy

shitwave is made by Nitro2k01 and is a shift based drone generator,"

Midi gameboy, with built in Arduinoboy.

"this is my midi enabled gameboy which i built. it uses a very high contrast gameboy pocket screen in it which has been adapted to fit, the screen has also been bi inverted thanks to bibbin and nitro's hex inverter idea. It has a white backlight from Nonfinite, and used to be a clear gameboy with the inside painted white.

i have also removed the text from the front of the gameboy to make it look cleaner and added purple snes buttons to match the purple LEDs in the middle.

the middle has a metal bezel which has a small window inside the gameboy to show a pixel heart made out of 16 UV LEDs.
the pixel heart is divided into 4 and shows the 5 modes of the Arduinoboy, blank for LSDJ master, to all on for midi.

the mode switch is above the headphone socket which has been pro sounded.

the arduino code has been edited from the original code written by Trash80, i changed how the lights light, so that the heart looked right, as well as "pulsing" in time to the music. i also modified pin 11 to work the speaker so that you get some beeps on mode change and start up.

the midi socket is on the side which was a pain in the ass to fit, it involved cutting the mother board of the gameboy.

and lastly the usb port is on the bottom for updating the arduino.

the two gameboy carts are USB carts that i have modified to look awesome, the blue one has LSDJ on it and the white one has MGB."

Update on EMS SYNTHI Production

via the sdiy list:

"15th February 2010

Dear xxx,

Thank you for your enquiry. After many long delays we are now expecting to re-
start production of the Synthi A and VCS3 at the end of this month.
We only have enough of the original Synthi A cases for 40 units, and when these
are all used-up we intend to redesign this product. Inevitably it will change
into something a bit different, but we have every intention of continuing with a
similar portable instrument.

In contrast the wooden cabinets for the VCS3 can still be made and we currently
have 30 ready for use in production. So we are hoping to continue to make this
available in its original form for several more years.

Please note that although we are not currently offering any keyboards for sale
(KS or DK2), we are hoping to make the mechanical keyboard DK2 available again
shortly after we have restarted Synthi production. We will also be trying to re-
introduce a variant of the KS touch-keyboard sequencer in due course. As yet no
price is available for either.

Many would-be customers have been waiting for several years for production to
restart, and we have been operating a waiting list system. The waiting list for
the Synthi A is already over-subscribed by double the number of available cases.
But people are still joining in the hope that enough of the long-term waiters
will have dropped out when we re-establish contact with them. Deposits for
Synthi As are now only accepted on the understanding that there is an
increasingly slim chance that one of the last original Synthi As will be
available to purchase. The separate waiting list for VCS3s remains open.
At the moment we are quoting a notional lead-time of 18 months for Synthi As and
VCS3s, although once we start delivering completed units we should be able to be
a bit more specific. Prices are 3000.00 GBP for the Synthi A and 3200.00 for the
VCS3 (excluding VAT - if you live in the EEC).

If you want to join the waiting list we just need a deposit in the form of a
personal cheque (NOT a bank draft), made out to EMS and mailed to the above
address, for the equivalent of 150.00 GB pounds (USD or euros accepted). We will
NOT attempt to bank or cash deposit cheques and at any time you can request its
return, for example if you managed to find a used Synthi on ebay or elsewhere.
To keep track of progress you are always welcome to email for an update.

The Synthis we are making are to the original Mk2 design using the original
components. Various modifications may be also added - a list is available on
request.
Let me know if you need any further information.

Best wishes - Robin Wood"
