Kawai SX 240 Polyphonic Synthesizer

via this auction

"The Kawai SX 240 was only made in a couple of thousand hence its rarity now, its a 61 -note 8-voice 16-DCO,48 memory MIDI Polysynth made between 1984-85.There is also a 1500-note real time sequencer on board as well, among the earliest MIDI synths made.In good working order ,one or two buttons require a 2nd press , a clean of the contacts will cure this, well made ,was made in Japan, in Hammamatsu i believe, where the mighty Yamaha CS80 was made.In good condition for age and a download manual is available on the web, great for classic analogue electronic sounds, the Brass and Strings are very good."

FORMANTA P-432

via this auction

"FORMANTA P-432 was made in Soviet Union (Russia) by well-known Polivoks/Formanta plant in Kachkanar city. This instrument is analog synthesizer with preset patches and midi. Synth has 37 patches in memory (electronic piano, strings, bass, organ etc.), vibrato and chorus effects. Also there is joystick for pitch/modulation control. It’s a great instrument for any music or collection. my synth is like new, mint condition. Works like it should 100%. Instrument has original configuration: with standard midi in/out/thru, ¼ Jack audio out, 220V power."

video here

Update via soundform in the comments: "Holly crap! It's not an "analogue" synth - it's a fully digital soviet bullshit. Very heavy and sounds like piece of shit. 495$ ??? It costs 30$ max here in Ukraine."

According to ruskeys.net it is indeed digital. You'll find additional info there. Be sure to see the video link above for a bit of what it sounds like.

JH. Fixed Filter Bank

full details here
"The old Moog® Modular System had an option of two different Fixed Filter Bank modules, one with 10 bands, and another one with 14 bands. ("Moog" is a registered Trademark of Moog Mucic (http://www.moogmusic.com).

Both are very unique-sounding, mostly because of the deep notches they produce between adjacent filter bands. Some people also claim it's becuase they used real inductors - wire-wound components that get nonlinear at higher signal levels. I'm not sure if the latter really is such an important factor, because thes efilter banks were designed in a way that in each filter band the signal first passes thru a resonant LC-filter at a certain level, and then passes a second LC-filter at a lower level. So my conclusion would be that the second LC-stage filters out whatever distortion products may or may not be created in the first stage. But then again, a tiny amount of harmonocs may survive, and others may have better ears than I and might hear a difference.

Anyway: I decided to make a PCB that allows both options: real inductors, or electronic inductors, so you can choose for yourself."

Duran Duran Covers by willrobinsonensoniq on the Roland D-20

My cover of Duran Duran's Is There Something I Should Know on The Roland D-20

YouTube via willrobinsonensoniq — August 06, 2009 — "I had always wanted to do a cover of this song. When I bought the D-20 I was quite overwhelmed with it. The sequencer was straightforward, maybe a bit basic but creating sounds became a priority. I eventually lost interest in covers and just started composing my own material. I have since been discovering ways around what some would say are shortcomings. Also, this board has been given a bad reputation. There is a love/hate relationship with current and past owners. Maybe user expectations were a bit high. I am hoping to inspire others to look beyond the obvious and re-discover the potential some of this gear holds. Another reason I chose this song is because it is familiar to most people. This was sequenced entirely on the D-20 with no assistance from my other gear or a computer. This may not be a Fantom or a Motif, and may sound dated or simplistic, but should give you an idea of what a little creativity will reap. It is after all a D Series and deserves some recognition.
I want to thank Duran Duran for the fountain of inspiration their music provided and giving me the courage to finally perform in a band. Enjoy."

My cover of Duran Duran's The Chauffeur

"willrobinsonensoniq — July 17, 2009 — I first heard this song during the Summer of 1983. It was one of those Simulcast that aired late at night. The Panflute / Calliope solo just astounded me. Probably one of the only times it aired on American airwaves; not including College Radio. The Rio album was a must play when my friend and I played Chess.
I thought this would be an easy cover when I started. I just got wrapped up in sound programming and had to force myself to just record. This is not a perfect cover, but one I didn't want to rush either. Between all my other projects and this one I believe its time to just relax and enjoy the Summer. The Roland D20 fit right in on this song and that Calliope sound was in my opinion "close enough."
I want to thank Duran Duran for the fountain of inspiration their music provided and giving me the courage to finally perform in a band. BTW we do a killer version of Hungry Like the Wolf."

Roland TB-303 Jamming & Testing My New Switches After Replacement

YouTube via LonDonsen — February 20, 2010 — "Jamming and testing my new switches after replacement, done by myself. It's easy to do if you have some basic knowledge about soldering and electronics. It was worth the effort because all 24 switches respond as new and it's a treat to programme this little monster of an analogue synth. I'm so happy...! I recommend this to everyone who has a pain in the ass when programming with old, filthy switches!

"ARP AXXE
MODEL 2323 Synthesizer

ARP Instruments s/N: 23230758

Details: Bench tested see waveforms, keyboard is virtually flawless-(1 littlescratch), Side Wood Trim has a small bite, the far right release slider tip is broken but still moves, the controls appear to be working but I am no expert... Typical analog mono synthesizer. Great fat bass sounds. Not a MOOG, but good for ARP. Sample & hold and noise generator are top notch for the era. Back panel has all the c/v, trigger, and gate in & outs you would have needed for pre-MIDI sequencing. This unit was useful as a central triggering unit using the repeat keyboard feature.
