"1983" by TSF

YouTube via TheSynthFreq — April 21, 2010 — "Hi. This is an "Italio Disco" style 80s composition written 04-21-10. I LOVE Italio Disco by the way. :)
Pardon the delay in the beginning of the video, I had to go around the camera to start the Motif sequencer. This song also needs some refining but it was great fun to write. I intended to write an 80s dance style composition and came up with this. I will add more to it soon. Got LOVE THE 80s!!

Synths used: D-50: strings Alpha Juno- Synth lead (original/new) + delay/echo DX-9: FM bass (preset) EMX-1: 80's track (new/original) Motif-6: ARP source for DX-9 CZ-5000: midi controller for Alpha Juno
PLEASE ENJOY :)

Ultra Rare Crumar Toccata Synthesizer

via this auction

"Super rare 1980 Crumar Toccata synthesizer. This is a great Hammond clone. Crumar synthesizers were originally designed by Bob Moog. This is Italian made and very rare. You see a couple a year on Ebay... No shipping to Russia, Italy or India."

Search is only bringing up two previously posted here, one in 2007 and one in 2008.

Update via fanwander in the comments: "Just to make it clear for the blog. The statement "Crumar synthesizers were originally designed by Bob Moog" is wrong. Bob Moog was involved only in the concept (not the detailled engineering) of the Crumar Spirit. All other Crumar instruments from this time are original designs by the crumar engineers." Small Signal Audio Design

This one popped up on the SDIY list.
"Small Signal Audio Design is a unique guide to the design of high-quality circuitry for preamplifiers, mixing consoles, and a host of other signal-processing devices. Learn to use inexpensive and readily available parts to obtain state-of-the-art performance in all the vital parameters of noise, distortion, crosstalk and so on. Focusing mainly on preamplifiers and mixers this practical handbook gives you an extensive repertoire of circuits that can be put together to make almost any type of audio system.

A resource packed full of valuable information, with virtually every page revealing nuggets of specialized knowledge never before published. Essential points of theory that bear on practical performance are lucidly and thoroughly explained, with the mathematics kept to an essential minimum. Douglas' background in design for manufacture ensures he keeps a wary eye on the cost of things. Includes a chapter on power-supplies, full of practical ways to keep both the ripple and the cost down, showing how to power everything.

Douglas wears his learning lightly, and this book features the engaging prose style familiar to readers of his other books The Audio Power Amplifier Design Handbook and Self on Audio. You will learn why mercury cables are not a good idea, the pitfalls of plating gold on copper, and what quotes from Star Trek have to do with PCB design.

*Provides an enormous amount of knowledge in one unique volume, making it an essential guide to design principles and practice in the wide are of small-signal audio

*Includes numerous circuit blocks with all component values given so you can build on them and easily adapt them to your own requirements

*Lavishly illustrated with diagrams and graphs, and full of practical measurements on real circuitry so you can be sure just how well it will perform

Learn how to:
* make amplifiers with apparently impossibly low noise
* design discrete circuitry that can handle enormous signals with vanishingly low distortion
* use humble low-gain transistors to make an amplifier with an input impedance of more than 50 Megohms
* transform the performance of low-cost-opamps, how to make filters with very low noise and distortion
* make incredibly accurate volume controls
* make a huge variety of audio equalisers
* make magnetic cartridge preamplifiers that have noise so low it is limited by basic physics
* sum, switch, clip, compress, and route audio signals

Wireless MIDI via OSC using Pianist Pro

Another step closer. Is this the first iPad instrument/synth app with native OSC support?
YouTube via MooCowMusic — April 21, 2010 — "New for Pianist Pro in the V1.2 update.

Control your DAW and hardware synths wirelessly via OSC with Pianist Pro. Use Pure Data (a free application for both OSX and Windows) on your PC to receive the OSC calls and translate them into MIDI messages to suit your setup.

Play your digital piano from the sofa, or even from another room...

For more information see our website at- http://moocowmusic.com"

via MooCowMusic:
"We've added OSC support so that you can use your iPad to control your DAW or hardware synths wirelessly. All you need to do is install a simple (and free) application called "Pure Data" onto a PC / Mac on the same wireless network as your iPad, and use the provided patch to convert the OSC messages sent by Pianist Pro into MIDI messages. Those MIDI messages can be recorded on your DAW, and control soft or hardware synthesisers. Pure Data patches are easily configured to suit your setup. Play your digital piano from your sofa, or even from another room!

We are just putting the finishing touches to this free update and hope to have it submitted to Apple in the next couple of days.

Another step closer. Is this the first iPad instrument/synth app with native OSC support?

The holy grail will be the ability to go directly from your iPad to your hardware synths for multi-track sequencing (with virtual sliders and knobs to control assignable parameters), along with the ability to sync your native iPad synths with your external gear, all, of course, wirelessly. The only way this will scale across multiple apps is if we have a new standard - here's hoping OSC becomes that standard.

Currently I'm aware of three manufacturers with hardware MIDI for the iPad:
Akai's SynthStation25
Line 6's MIDI Mobilizer
iConnectivity's iConnectMIDI
I'm not sure if any of these plan to use OSC. If you are watching, please look into this.

Currently I have my eye on iConnectMIDI. There's no mention of OSC, but if you look at the iPad/iPhone app icons on their website, you will see what looks like an icon for Pianist Pro.

BTW, I just created an OSC label. As you can imagine searching on OSC brought up a ton of posts mentioning oscillators rather than Open Sound Control. That said, I'm sure I'm missing a ton of OSC posts in the archives. If you spot any, comment in the post, or shot me an email and I'll update it.

Jomox Sampleshop

via the Jomox Sampleshop
"We had this idea since quite some time - now it turns into reality.

Since 15 years we at Jomox build electronic sound producers. Meanwhile, some products have become history or can't be produced any more. Or they are too expensive for many musicians and keep an unreachable dream. For instance, instruments like SunSyn and Resonator Neuronium have only been produced in small quantities. Almost daily we get inquiries of people that we have to discourage because these instruments are not available any more.

In order to bring these instruments to a broader base of users and sound fetishists, we have decided to offer a sample download store. Here you can purchase high quality samples of these instruments for fair prices directly from the manufacturer.

The instruments that are used for sampling are of course in A1 condition and hand calibrated and selected, in technical and soundwise best condition - because they are build here.

The libraries will evolve and being expanded in future. Now the collection is tiny, but it will grow. There will also be loops and unusual sound bites, since individuality is our potential.

You can purchase smaller packs or even participate from sound producers or experimental synths that maybe never reach a serial production. And you don't need to purchase an expensive sampling CD with preproduced kinds of styles containing hundreds of samples only for the one special used sound.

The Jomox Sampleshop sound files are only offered for download - physical media packs with DVDs or BlueRay for shipping are not being produced.

Payment is very user-friendly with our payment provider ClickandBuy. Almost all Credit/EC-Cards or IBAN bank transfers are accepted and are perfomed via SSL secure data transactions.

After confirmed payment you are rerouted into the shop system and checked for download in your user account. The files can be downloaded for 3 days after purchase, then the download is cancelled.

We wish you lots of joy,
Jürgen Michaelis,

It has a single VCO with two waveforms (saw, square) freely mixable, one vcf, and one LFO. Single envelope routable to pitch or filter, and a S/H as well. Here i go through its basic functions, and then add a Moogerfooger Freqbox (MF-107), with the CV out from the Axxe, for a second tunable VCO. Works pretty well. The chords at 0:27 are from a Roland OS9. Played through a Boss RV-5 reverb, MXR-169 analog delay, and a Boss CE-5 Chorus/Ensemble."

MegaOhm Audio

MS20-style VCF
"Controls
* FREQ - manual cutoff frequency
* RES - Resonance control (sometimes called Emphasis)
* Filter will oscillate once turned past 12 o'clock. FM 1 - level control for FM 1 signal

Controls for the second VCF are a mirror of the first.
Inputs and Outputs
Functions of the second filter's jacks are the same except where noted.

* LP - audio input for Low Pass response of filter
* HP - audio input for High Pass response of filter
* FM 1 - CV input for control of cutoff frequency
* The FM 1 jack for the LEFT VCF is normalled to the FM 1 jack for the RIGHT VCF. Plugging into the RIGHT FM 1 jack will break that connection. FM 2 - CV input for control of cutoff frequency
* RES - CV input for control of Resonance level
* OUT - Final output

Important Notes

First off, does this filter sound like the Korg MS20 VCFs? I don't know! I've never had the opportunity to play one. I have heard sound samples of other clones and have built a few other MS20 clone designs, too. They sound tame compared to these two! Though the others may sound "truer" to the original MS20 VCF sound, I find this circuit much more exciting.

Each module consists of two identical voltage controlled filters. Each VCF is completely independent of the other (except for the RIGHT FM 1 jack, which is make-and-break connected to the LEFT VCF FM 1 jack). The filters can be operated in parallel by mixing their outputs with an external mixer. They can be run in series by patching the output of one to the input of the other. Series connection will give a steeper slope.

The high pass input is interesting in that it can be used simultaneously with the LP input. Even more interesting is that this jack gives you direct access to one of the filter caps. If you "dummy" plug it, the cutoff frequency will change and the output signal will be boosted. If you then start turning the Res pot clockwise, the oscillations will become very distorted (and loud). Res pot full up and it's a huge, crunchy sound. Tell the guitar player to go home. :)

One more cool thing, you can influence the cutoff frequency by dummy plugging with a patch cord and then holding the other end in your hand. If you roll your finger (squeeze your hand shut, whatever) across the tip and sleeve you become the "ground" and the cutoff frequency dips down. It doesn't span the whole Freq range, but it can be used effectively to add a little (literal) "human" touch."

LFO Two
"Presenting a dual LFO module to fill your MU format needs.
LFOrg:
Based on the LFO found in the MS20.

* Shape control varies the waveshape at the mult'ed Shape Out jack, from saw to triangle to ramp. Shape control simultaneously adjusts the width of the Pulse wave output.
* Range switch control. Runs from just under audio rate to a low of approximately 4 minutes per cycle.
* Reset input restarts cycle when signal rising is above 1V and is great for getting the LFO in time with drummers, beat machines, etc. The point where the wave will reset to is selectable via pcb jumper: Hi, Low or 0V.

LFOrp:
Based on the LFO found in the ARP Odyssey

* Runs down to 30 seconds per cycle. Low Range jumper enables low times of approximately 2.5 minutes per cycle
* Sine wave and square wave outputs.

Many pcb jumper selected options (nine of them!) so users can easily customize their module to suit their needs.

MU format (will fit in synthesizers.com and STG cabinets and rack frames)

Built with love and care in Chicago using high quality parts including:

* Switchcraft 112 jacks
* NKK toggle switches"

Delta VCF
"The Delta VCF is more than just a clone of the filter section from a vintage synth of the same name. All of the supporting circuitry has been changed and additional features were added.

Includes a high quality, independent VCA, so it's like two modules in one. Linear AC coupled FM input is rare on a VCF. At low settings it works well in adding depth to bass and horn like sounds. Some settings and input combinations produce wildly chaotic results. There is a wide variety of in-between sounds to be had.

Grove Audio DUAL VC LOW FREQUENCY OSCILLATOR & VC AMPLIFIER

Grove Audio MODEL GMS-782

"The GMS-782 Dual Voltage Controlled Low Frequency Oscillator/VC Amplifier provides low frequency triangle, sine or square waves for use as modifiers or triggers for complex evolving synth patches. Two functions, commonly used together are combined in each channel to produce a versatile voltage controlled waveform generator. The LFO has a wide range from subsonic to low audio in two ranges and provides a trigger function to reset the oscillator to a known state. The voltage controlled amplifier has a selector switch allowing one of the three oscillator waveforms to be selected as its input. The output is a function of the front panel level control summed with the voltage control input.

TRIGGER- When a control signal with a rising edge is presented to the Trigger input, the oscillator is reset to 0 Volts output and the waveform starts rising in the positive direction. The trigger input signal should be a 0 to +5 Volt signal. The length of the trigger pulse is not important."
