New Analogue Systems RS450 Real Time/Step Time Sequencer/CV Recorder

Prelim details via the Big City Music blog:

"This module will re create the KS section of the legendary EMS synthi AKS when in Real Time mode.In Step Time mode it will emulate the Roland SH101 sequencer section. In addition the module is a 4 channel cv recorder with non volatile memory contained in 12 banks. We are working on the possibility of layering up to 4 tracks of recorder cv data but this spec may vary subject to change

MMC card on-board for storage.
Switches:

Playback
· One shot
· Loop
· Hold - like one-shot but it will remember it's place when you stop playing and resume from that point. The reset input resets back to the start.
· Forward
· Reverse
· Bi-dir. In one-shot mode should this reverse each time it is triggered
Sequencer mode
· Step - Records/plays back the levels each time it is triggered. While playing back this would be very similar to step sequencers. You need to provide an external gate in this mode.
· Continuous/Real Time - The outputs simply track the inputs. Clock in is recorded along with the CVs so you can record gates/triggers. Playback rate is controlled by the speed pot/CV.
Trigger mode.
· Trigger - A trigger on PLAY starts playback,a trigger on STOP stops playback. The same goes for record
· Gate - PLAY/RECORD are gates. STOP does nothing
· Start/stop - A trigger on PLAY starts playback, another trigger on PLAY stops playback. The same goes for record
Memory.
· 10 (maybe 12) independent recordings can be stored.
Sockets:

Clock in In step mode this provides the step clock. In continuous/Real Time mode it is recorded and output on clock out when playing back.
Clock out In step mode this mirrors clock in. In continuous/Real Time mode it outputs the recorded clocks/triggers.
Reset Resets the loop back to the beginning but does not stop playback. Probably most useful in hold mode.
CV outs While recording they mirror the CV inputs so you can monitor the inputs. In step mode while recording the outputs only change on each gate so you hear exactly what is being recorded."

Studio Electronics CODE 4 OD - A Few Presets

YouTube via bigcitymusic — May 11, 2010 — "Here's a smattering of presets from the mega-awesome polysynth from Studio Electronics, The CODE 4OD. The CODE sports Moog and Oberheim-style filters stock. Yamaha CS-80, Arp 2600 and TB-303 style filter cards can be added by the user. The CODE's we carry come standard with four voice cards which give you four note polyphony. Other voice cards can be added, allowing you up to eight voices total. This is definitely one of the best sounding polysynths ever made and has some great modern features like storable presets, lFO's that sync, cross-modulation, and a switchable overdrive on the output section(hence the "OD") Please note that the Code sounds much better in person or with a proper preamp;) The chord sequence is being generated by the Elektron Machinedrum midi machine."

Two KORG Monotrons (flickr by auxninja)

"Got two Korg Monotron in the mail today. Amazingly small. About the size of an iPhone.
So far I really really like them. The filter is damn raw, and combined with the LFO modulation (ranging from slow enough to fast enough) you can get some sweet squelches out of it.

When using the external input, max out the LFO speed and depth and set the resonance to about 60% and twiddle the cutoff knob for a bitcrusher style effect.

Hmm, if I could sync the VCO's and feed the output of one into the other... These babies are definitely going under the screwdriver tomorrow."

* Nasty Screaming oscillator
* Phat dirty Bass Oscillator
* Beat Crushing distortion
* Low Pass Filter / Tone control for DRUMS
* Low Pass Filter / Tone control for INSTRUMENTS
* Audio Output

.The YAMAHA PSS-30 is a squarewave keyboard (not FM like most Yamaha's) with a very 80's sound. Features are all pretty basic (8 Rhythms, 8 Instruments and Play and Record Sequencer & Tempo control).
Sometimes 'Basic' is desirable, as there's no need to spend time reading instruction manuals or setting up and configuring the machine. Just turn it on, press the keys and turn the knobs to instantly create powerful, Phat Tones, Drums & Analog Oscillation.

This Machine is powered with 4 x 'AA' Batteries or a 9 / 12 volt adapter (not included).

Minor Damage to the Machine's case has been repaired (see photos)."

An agonizing theme

YouTube via attorks — May 11, 2010

"I am aware of the risk of overfeeding you with video´s but the inspiration is there so let´s take advantage of that. This piece of music is sequenced in Nodal. It started last evening when I hooked up the Zoom RT-323 drum machine to be controlled by Nodal. The bass sequence is performed by the Ian Fritz Teezer Through-Zero VCO from which the sawtooth wave is fed to the Resonant LoPass Gate. Then you hear the tuned-up bass voice from the Zoom RT-323 doing a semi-random sequence. After that the Mellotron sound from the Roland XP-80 is introduced and the high-pitched sequence from the Creamware MiniMax ASB. The chords and occasional bass are performed on the Waldorf Q Keyboard and the solo on the Clavia Nord Lead 1."

Korg MS Series - Automated Changes

YouTube via Newueel — May 11, 2010 — "This video is actually about lazy synthesizing. All changes and variations are controlled by the analog setup itself! This means that after pressing the SQ-10 START button, the machines are not touched anymore, which gave me some time to freak out with the camera ;). The audio is recorded in one take, no FX and no edits.

Here's a description of the 2 most interesting automated changes:

The tonics (bass and melody) change after each random number of loops. Note that tonic changes only happen at the first step of a sequence. This is a trick using two S&H modules. Basically SQ-10 Channel C holds 12 predefined keynotes (including duplicates). The channel C output voltage is sampled and hold with a slow interval using the MG. The clock interval is greater than 1 sequence. Since the MG is not synced with the SQ-10 clock speed, this results in a random changing tonic, but most of the times in the middle of a sequence. Therefore another S&H module samples the output of the first S&H module every first step of a sequence and holds it for the rest of the sequence. This way each tonic change is delayed until the next first step of a sequence. Sometimes there seems to be no tonic, this is because one of the predefined tonics has an inaudible frequency.

When listening to the melody, note that it is continuously varying. Sometimes you hear the full melody, but most of the the time notes are skipped at random. This is due to the so called probability patch. The probability controls the chance for a step that it's being played (or muted) and can be fully controlled from 0% to 100%. This creates interesting variations since not all notes are necessarily played all times. In this patch the probability is changing continuously between 50% and 100%. This way the melody is continuously varying."

GrainCube - Electroacoustic Reaktor Collaboration

Reaktor and Jazz Mutant Lemur downloads available here

"A free granular electroacoustic Reaktor Collaboration between DevSnd, Rachmiel, TwistedTools & Antonio Blanca.

GrainCube is a four part granular processing instrument with numerous randomizing functions and modulation capabilities that allow for indescribable sonic mischief. The heart of GrainCube is a 400mb sample map of exclusive sample material from Richard Devine & Josh Kay of DevineSound. GrainCube is a collaboration between DevineSound & Rick Scott (Rachmiel), with additional programming and GUI tweaks by Igor Shilov of Twisted Tools. An additional version is also available for the Jazzmutant Lemur, re-imagined by Antonio Blanca.

"Richard Devine is one of the most highly respected sound designers in our industry and here he gives away the result of an electroacoustic collaboration with RachMiel: a unique new Reaktor instrument. Not only that, but he's created a special Lemur version alongside Lemur-programmer genius Antonio Blanca for the JazzMutant community.

Richard Devine's unique approach to sound is hugely in demand and the Lemur Cube's two granular samplers are packed with an entire library of original sound content. The randomisations inside the Reaktor patch make it a sound sculpture piece that never plays the same sound twice. The in-depth control provided by the Lemur template is perfect for guiding the chaos.

The twisted textures provided by DevineCube are ideal to add soundscapes and sound fx to any project, or even throw in your own samples into the waveform window (define the samples range in the main window) and see what comes out!"

The Modulator DIY Modular

Full specs and details here.

"There are Buchlas, Moogs and Serges, but there is nothing like rolling your own...
Here are my pictures and notes from building an analogue modular synthesizer.

Why?
A while ago I planned to buy a Yamaha CS-30 since I wanted to have some kind of simple analogue sequencer device but I couldn't fine one in good condition. Then I moved on looking at the Roland System 100m but figured the price tag for a decent system with sequencer and all would be a bit too high.
Searching the net for analogue sequencers I found the Music From Outer Space 16-step analog sequencer. Quite simple construction and versatile. But an analogue sequencer needs to drive some analog VCOs, and VCOs need VCFs, and VCFs need CV sources, ...
I decided to go for a small basic setup..."

"Careful With That Spirytus, Jeff!" - an Archangel demonstration

YouTube via suitandtieguy — May 11, 2010 — "Here's a quick jam on the Det3 Archangel controlling a Moog Micromoog and my own modular synthesizer, with a CR-8000 lounge machine added for good measure.

I feel the sound on U-Toob is substandard. if you would like to download a 192kbps MP3, it's at:

http://suitandtieguy.com/sounds/2010%...

the Archangel's sequencer is running at 8th notes, the clock output driving the V-trig input of the Micromoog. the A row of the Archangel is controlling the pitch of the Micromoog, the C and D rows are used to control the filter cutoff of the Micromoog via the "CD" output, which alternates between the C and D rows creating a filter pattern twice as long as whatever the current pitch pattern is. the filter pattern is sent through an attenuator so it can be brought in partway through the recording. sequence lengths of 2 to 8 stages are used at various points.

the touchplate keyboard of the Archangel is controlling my modular synthesiser. the gate and pitch outputs are controlling pitch and gate on the modular. the pressure output is controlling vibrato amount and the vertical position is controlling filter cutoff.

voice and vibrato oscillators are Synthesizers.com Q106, mixer is homebrew using a hacked STG Soundlabs Wave Folder PCB as a gain stage, filter is an MOTM-490, output and vibrato VCA is an STG Soundlabs Signal Amplifiers module. ADSRs are based on MFoS PCBs.

clock master is a x0xb0x through the STG Soundlabs Time Buffer, driving the Archangel and the CR-8000. Micromoog delay is a Boss DD-20, CR-8000 reverb is a PCM-80, and the modular goes through the Eventide H3000. everything tracked individually with effects printed to an Alesis HD24 and mixed in Digital Performer.

no spirytus rektyfikowany was harmed or consumed in the making of this video, but apparently someone in the studio while i was making it drank more of it than he should of the previous night."

SCI Pro-One CPU Replacement/Upgrade & DIY MIDI

pdf here. via Music Technologies Group, here

"The Pro One Replacement CPU module can be used to replace a missing or damaged 8021. It also offers larger sequence memory and non-volatility. Here are the key features:
o Drop-in replacement using standard tools. Plug n Play. No soldering required.
o Supports the original functionality including the sequencer and arpeggiator.
o Each sequence can be up to 256 steps (compared to total of 40 steps on the original).
o Sequences are retained in memory even after power-down. The CPU module does not use a battery.
o Power-on settable parameters for clock start mode, arpeggio up/down mode and arpeggio gate time.
o DIY instructions for building a MIDI interface that allows you to re-flash the CPU firmware (E.g. sending a Sys Ex file using MIDIOX or similar) are provided in the Appendix.
At some point in the future a 5-pin DIN MIDI add-on kit will be offered with a full MIDI implementation (and later a USB-MIDI interface is possible too since the CPU chosen for the module supports both). Currently the module only supports firmware upgrade over 5-pin DIN MIDI."

I originally posted this on 5/9/10 8:25PM with just the links to the PDF. I thought I'd re-post this one with more details and an image of the CPU replacement for those that might have missed it.
