ROLAND GR-100 FLOOR GUITAR SYNTH

via this auction

"The Roland GR-100 is the least known of all the vintage Roland guitar synthesizers. If six fuzz pedals with six -12 dB low-pass filters can make a guitar synthesizer, then this is a guitar synthesizer. But Roland wisely decided to call the GR-100 an "electronic guitar,". I would have to say it is a fuzz box with an adequate filter and a very nice chorus and vibrato circuit.

The GR-100 Synth Engine:
In this way, it is very different from the GR-300. The GR-300 generates its hex-fuzz sound by using the hex-fuzz circuitry contained in the guitar controller. For example, the G-202 has a different hex-fuzz circuit than the G-808. And the G-707 has no hex-fuzz circuit at all. But none of that matters with the GR-100, as it has a slightly more sophisticated version of the G-303/G-808 hex-fuzz design.

The hex-fuzz in the GR-100 is smoother than what you hear with a GR-300, and it also has an additional sustain feature. With the mode switch in the down position (mode 1), you hear guitar only. In the middle position (mode 2) you hear the basic GR-100 hex-fuzz sound, and with the switch in the up position (mode 3) you hear the GR-100 hex-fuzz sound with an additional sustain/compression circuit. As a side note, the hex-fuzz circuit in the RC-1324 is designed to emulate this overdriven, mode 3 hex-fuzz sound."

A proper bass line from a Sequential Circuits Pro One

YouTube via rezfilter | July 07, 2010

"Here's the sound of an SCI Pro One bass line being controlled by an Oberkorn analog sequencer (separate cv and filter). The Roland System 100m is also being controlled via the sequencer.

"What synth will get me that bass sound?" This one."

Analogue Sequencer (DIY Rhythm Box)

YouTube via nathanielscott | July 07, 2010

"This video shows an old project I started nearly a year ago and then forgot about. I pulled it out of the closet and got it to work enough to at least make this video. What it is is a self contained sequencer (runs off its own 9V battery) that has one channel of voltage control and two channels of gate/triggers.

In this video you can see the little sequencer driving my modular synth which has Paia, Dot Com, and some of my self designed modules. The next step for this little sequencer is to build in three oscillators: one with a bass sound to be controlled by the voltage control to create simple bass lines, and a snare and drum sound generators to be triggered by the channels of gate/triggers. This would then make a simple self contained rhythm section box.

If all goes well I will likely sell the little device. Let me know if you are interested in it.

Lastly, you may notice that there are some shots of a spider and spider web cut in with the video. While I was shooting the video I discovered this spider above and to the right of my modular synth. So I decided to include the little beast. I believe that the spider is a male araneus gemmoides, but if you know better please let me know."

Note: I added a Nathaniel Scott label below.

mk - monome kit

via monome.org
"monome kit. pre-orders july 16. shipping late july.

specifications
* USB bus powered
* supports up to four 8×8 keypad grids, for a total of 16×16
* auxiliary ports for additional digital or analog i/o, such as knobs, joysticks, accelerometers, rotary encoders, switches, LEDs
* boot loader for easy firmware updates and customization, no external programmer needed
* open source firmware and schematics

we've designed a modular system which allows scalability and customization. the individual parts are:

* logic: hub which communicates with the computer and other connected modules. easy user firmware updates allow extended functionality.
* driver: helper electronics which light up the grid and collect keypad data. connects to the logic section with a single ribbon cable.
* grid: 8×8 keypad surface, connects to the driver board directly. customizable LED color (not included).

one driver is needed per grid. for a full 8×8, you'd need 1 logic 1 driver 1 grid. a full 8×16 would require 1 logic 2 driver 2 grid. etc.

note that a full kit still requires the user to create or source a top plate and enclosure. past users have found fantastic creative solutions for mounting these kits– don't simply resort to purchasing a prefabricated enclosure before considering your options."

The CAMAC Music Synthesizer

I spotted this one on Deviant Synth. It's a DIY synth by Dr. Joseph A. Paradiso. You can find full details here.

"I spent the winter of 1979-1980 in Europe as a graduate student of the MIT physics department, working at our R209 muon pair experiment running at the Intersecting Storage Rings at the CERN Laboratory in Geneva, Switzerland. These were extremely stimulating years; CERN is a fantastic environment for high-energy physics (especially then, as it was about to enter a golden age with the launch of the p-bar-p collider), and living in Geneva was fabulous; with the French Alps and Jura nearby, there were many highpoints. Things quieted down though as the winter shutdown began at CERN and all of the postdocs left town for the holidays. I myself was about to leave for a couple of weeks in Rome to visit relatives, but there was a good gap of a week or two beforehand when I had a fair amount of time on my hands and a nice workshop available (always a dangerous situation). Although I often took advantage of an old piano that was hidden in a cable tunnel under the main CERN restaurant, I missed my synthesizers, and wanted to play with electronic music again."

The Projector (piano and modular synthesizer improvisation)

YouTube via SynthManiaDotCom | July 06, 2010

"An improvisation on piano and modular synthesizer. The central theme is a projector that reflects images pertinent to my life. The genre is ambient, slow and contemplative - I suppose there are some influences by Satie and the theme from The Persuaders.

Instruments used: Kurzweil K2500X for the piano, Synthesizers.com modular for the synth.'

"Whenever you want me" - on a pile of Yamaha toy keyboards

YouTube via organfairy | July 07, 2010

"Previously I have done some covers on a pile of Casio toy keyboards. But this time I am playing some Yamahas instead.
Most of them gets their sound from a simple FM synthesizer which makes them sound a bit cheap compared to the Casios. But still I found a way to make the seven keyboards I used fit nicely together in the mix.

The song is "Whenever you want me" by Danish band Laid Back."

ARP 2600 with 3620 Keyboard and Mods

via this auction

"This particular synth was restored by John @ Synhouse.com. It is the model 2601 and has the model 3620 keyboard. This is a matching pair, both serial numbers are 0413. Very hard to find these things with matching serials, for some reason. This synth comes with an original ARP 2600 manual, which is in good condition, the glue is old and the first couple of pages have come loose. It also comes with some original patch cords as well as custom patch cords, you can see them in the picture. This is a very special ARP as it has MIDI installed. It very well may be the first and ONLY ARP 2600 to have that. You can see picture 7 where the MIDI jack is located, the reset button (in picture 8) is discretely located. For very simple instructions on how the MIDIJack works go to http://www.synhouse.com/M1-Analog-User.html It is very simple.

Also, there were some modifications done to this synth, prior to the restoration, as you can see in photos 9 and 10. These were left intact, since they were cool, and just added some extra capabilities. The red tape is from the original modification, circa late 70's. This ARP 2600 was purchased from a studio in California and is rumored to have been used in some capacity during the filming of "Close Encounters of the Third Kind". It cannot be confirmed or denied, so take it for what it is, a cool little tidbit. I have A/Bed this with the Timewarp 2600 and the Arturia 2600 virtual synths and it is not even close! This monster blows them away. Do not believe the hype. These old analog synths are VERY much worth whatever you pay for them. They may sound similar when you record the synth digitally, but if you play the synth through a PA, then play the virtual, digitized version through the PA, YOU CAN DEFINITELY HEAR THE DIFFERENCE! If I were playing live, it would be a no brainer. You really can hear the difference."
