American Museum of Radio & Electricity in Bellingham, WA

"The American Museum of Radio and Electricity (Update: now the SPARK Museum of Electrical Invention) offers an exciting and educational experience for audiences of all ages. Compelling, interactive exhibits spanning four centuries of scientific achievement and cultural heritage are featured in a world-class collection of unique objects. The American Museum of Radio and Electricity displays the inventions and innovations that changed the course of human history.

The American Museum of Radio and Electricity is a 501(c)(3)non-profit charitable organization."

I was fortunate enough to visit the museum this past weekend. The museum primarily focuses on the history of electricity and radio. To my surprise they had a display on the theremin. The museum as a whole was pretty incredible. I hadn't been to their website prior to my visit so I had no idea what to expect. If you are ever in the area, definitely drop by and ask for the mini guided tour. The tour guide we had did a great job not only letting us know what we were looking at and answering our questions, but he gave us some functional demos of the historical equipment. BTW, if you are into steampunk, this should rank on the top of your list of sites to visit. Just check out my flickr set here (or slide show at the bottom of this post). Note the black and white key layouts on the keyboards in the pics. Aside from the one organ, they are not actually musical keyboards, they are telegraphs. Side note: all photos were taken with my iPhone 4.

• where you could expand the processing capabilities of your hardware transparently, simply by plugging in more processing cards, because the machine was designed from the outset with scalability and multiple processors in mind...
• where you'd never have to sacrifice sound quality just because you're trying to squeeze more real time processing out of your desktop or laptop computer...
• with FireWire, timecode, MIDI, and 8 channels of 24-bit 100 kHz audio...
• controlled by the award-winning Kyma software with cutting-edge algorithms like granular processing, real-time analysis/resynthesis, aggregate synthesis, and spectral morphing...
• an online community of colleagues at the leading edge of film, music, advertising, and game development...
• a tech support staff that is among the most dedicated and educated in the business,
• and a symbolic, blue LED on the front panel.

Simmons SDSV / SDX hybrid kit - Sibi Siebert at Ludwigsburger Trommeltage 2009 - Part I

YouTube via simmonsmuseum | October 27, 2009

"Sibi Siebert, Simmons buddy from my hometown and former product manager of Simmons Electronic Drums, created a performance especially for the Ludwigsburger Trommeltage. Therefor I supported him with my SDX unit. My unit was even originally owned by Sibi. And now, 3 owners later, he is once more sitting behind it.... All sounds and loops are developped by Sibi and fired from the SDX. There is no additional playback in the mix"

Simmons SDX demonstration video

YouTube via simmonsmuseum | June 16, 2009

"This video is supposed to give you an impression of this milestone in edrum history. It is still the most expensive edrum system of all times. I don't want to give many sound examples because in my oppinion the library is not that exciting, but all these advanced features (back in 1987!) have still a great influence on today's edrum systems and will have in the future of electronic drumming. Hopefully my English is not too bad...."

Simmons SDSV sound and filter demo

YouTube via simmonsmuseum | May 30, 2009

"The Simmons SDSV is supposed to be the mother of all electronic drums as it has been the first one that had been produced in a noticable number (between 1981 and 1984). The characteristic hexagonal shaped drum pads conquered the stages all over the world at the beginning of the 80s. This movie gives you a slight impression about the capabilities of the SDSV"

" It has always been a home studio synthesizer, and has never been gigged or toured even by its previous owner (who happens to be none other than Neal Schon of Journey!)... You also get a NEW FACEPLATE for the unit. I bought this around the time I purchased the OB and never put it on. You can see how vibrant white and perfect the faceplate truly is in the photos. The O.S. is the newest (2.0) and the internal battery isn't in need of replacement."

Making a sequence (Part 1/2)

YouTube via attorks | July 19, 2010

"This is an attempt to try to show you how a sequence can be made. I found out making an instruction video is not that easy but I just wanted to share this with you. After making the video I noticed my voice was a bit soft so I tried to emphasis it with a little EQing; hope you can understand what I am saying. I did not want to redo the video because it wouldn't be improvised anymore and I think the sequence worked out quite well. Making sequences is not an exact science so this is just an example and I do not always do it as shown. And I am not an expert in sequencing. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. This is part 1 of a 2 part video."

KAT MIDI KITI PRO Drum Trigger Analog to Digital Box

via this auction

"Here's the original marketing language for the MIDI K.I.T.I. Pro

'The midiKITI Pro is the most powerful trigger to MIDI converter on the market. Designed for drummers who need professional features and reliability, the midiKITI Pro is the only serious unit available for acoustic drum triggering or pad triggering. The midiKITI Pro features nine external trigger inputs for pads or triggers. With four notes per trigger, you can layer, crossfade, or even alternate sounds at the touch of a button. Its "Auto Train" feature allows quick and easy setup of MIDI channel, note channel, dynamic range, and many other parameters. The midiKITI's new live pattern generator can add dimension to your solos, or can simply be used as an ncredible practice device at home. The midiKITI Pro has all of the high level triggering features needed by today's top professionals.

KEY FEATURES—AUTO TRAINING modes allow easy setup of:
1. MIDI CHANNEL and MIDI NOTE simply by pressing your drum machine button;
2. GAIN for trigger signal simply by hitting the drum or pad.
3. TRIGGER ENVELOPE and personal dynamic range simply with a soft and a hard hit;
4. INTERACTION Groupings simply by hitting the drum or pad.

Trigger Inputs respond to electronic triggers, acoustic triggers, and drum mics because of intelligent use of the Trigger Envelope from AUTO TRAIN. PEAK VIEW allows bar-graph viewing of trigger signal strength. All Trigger Inputs are totally independent, each with: 16 levels of GAIN, 64 steps of personal DYNAMIC RANGE, variable THRESHOLDS, MASK TIMES, and HEADROOMS. SCAN TIME selects MIDI processing time from 1.5 to 8 milliseconds. INTERACTION Suppression eliminates cross triggering from one trigger to another.

16 MIDI KITs have the following independent MIDI settings for all of the 9 triggers for each KIT:

MIDI CHANNEL (1-16)
MIDI NOTE (1-128)
MINIMUM VELOCITY (0- 120)
MAXIMUM VELOCITY (8-127)
VELOCITY CURVE (feel) (1-16)
GATE TIME (0 - 6.3 seconds, in .025 sec steps and
infinite)

Each Midi KIT can send out a PROGRAM CHANGE to select sounds on your sound source.
Data Dumping through MIDI to save settings on a data disk or a computer librarian.

ADDITIONAL PRO FEATURES

Each trigger input can play up to 4 notes in 16 different modes. Modes include Multiple (Simultaneous) Velocity cross-fade and Alternating.

New INTERACTION MATRIX allows pads that interact to be grouped automatically without affecting the other pads not involved. An additional jack for a Hi-Hat mode controlled by a footswitch. (Three sounds available) KIT advance and backup can now be performed by the trigger inputs.

Select an independent MIDI Channel to receive Program Changes on. MIDI IN merge to MIDI OUT is selectable from KITI front panel.

PHYSICAL Specs:

Weight: 3 lbs.

YAMAHA SK 20

via this auction
"A lovely sounding organ / strings / polysynth . String sound is comparable to the Roland RS 202 and you can build up more complex sounds because of the 3 sections. PItch of the organ/string section can be detuned against the pitch of the polysynth. It contains an excellent ensemble effect in addition to vibrato and tremelo effect. Its a little heavy so best suited for studio use! The analog section strings/polysynth sound , to me , is very beautiful ; grainy ., a very physical real sound ."
