1960's Outer Limits Panel

via Gerard:

"I was at the Science Fiction Museum in Seattle today and saw this panel which is an original 'control panel' used in the 1960's Outer Limits TV series. The photo is perhaps not good enough quality for a post, but I do believe that this type of iconic childhood sci-fi image is what backs a lot of baby-boomer obsession with knob-a-holic analog synthesis. Just a thought!" Indeed and definitely worth a post. I'm curious what sound effects went along with the scenes that featured it and what used to create them.

Pittsburgh ViLFO + Bananalogue Serge VCS + A.S. rs95e oscillator

YouTube via bigcitymusic | August 03, 2010

"Here's the Pittsburgh ViLFO (voltage-influenced LFO). In this video the ViLFO is modulating the pitch of an Analogue Systems rs95e oscillator. The ViLFO is being modulated by a pair of Bananalogue Serge VCS modules. We're creating a three-way modulation loop with the ViLFO which can yield some really nice results."

twin goatkeeper modular 2

YouTube via LIGHTFOOTLABS | August 03, 2010

"Eurorack modular noodle using twin goatkeepers as pitch and rhythm sequencers. Before the start of the video I recorded in two simple control voltage sequences into the grey gk3's waveform recorder using a midi to CV box. The two gk3s are not synchronized this time, which I did on purpose to give more variety. Also using the Moog analog delay, LIvewire AFG, Doepfer multimode filter, Doepfer VCA (just as a mixer), and small external mixer off to the side. No computer used other than recording."

Cyndustries Logicpac Modcan A format synth module

via this auction
"The Logipac module consists of a pair of 3-input, triple-function Boolean Gate sections, and a pair of D-type Flip-Flop sections. All inputs feature our anything-to-logic input circuitry which allows slow-moving waveforms (like sine waves) to behave like logic signals. The only requirement is that they cross +1V somewhere in their cycle.

Logic Gates
The Boolean Gate sections feature 3-inputs rather than the usual 2, which greatly increases their versatility and allows for the patching of more complicated logical functions with fewer modules. The 3-inputs are processed by logical AND, OR, and EXCLUSIVE OR (EXOR) functions simultaneously, and each function has it's own output jack and corresponding LED.

(To use the gates as 2-input functions, just use 2 inputs of the OR and EXOR with input 3 left unused. The AND requires the unused input be patched together with one of the used inputs.)

The 3-input EXOR functions as an odd / even parity generator. If an odd number of inputs are high, the output is high, and if an even number of inputs are high, the output is low. You can cascade this operation into the other EXOR gate and pick up 2 more inputs. You can also use the EXOR function as a logic inverter. Patch one input high and patch the signal to be inverted into another input. Check out the truth (table that is):

Flip-Flops
The D-type Flip-Flops are 1-bit memory storage devices with various ways to acquire the bit and turn it on and off. Applications are best understood by understanding what signals are coming and going.

[Q] and [NOTQ] Q-bar (pronounced Not Q or Q Bar)
These are the outputs. Q is the bit, either on or off and NOTQ is its logical inverse (when Q is on, NOTQ is off and vice-versa).

[S] SET
A high level at this input will latch Q high (NOTQ low)

[R] RESET
A high level at this input will latch Q low (NOTQ high)

Bringing both SET and RESET high simultaneously is undefined and will produce unpredictable results. It's like trying to force a see-saw to be both ways at once. When SET and RESET are brought low again, the one to fall last will be remembered.

[C] CLOCK and [D] DATA
The CLOCK and DATA inputs work together. The CLOCK is edge sensitive and when brought high, the state of the DATA input is latched into Q. That is, Q will equal DATA when CLOCKed.

There, that's not so complicated, is it?

Modcan 20A Pulse Divider / Dual Switch

via this auction
"http://www.modcan.com/modhtml/modules.html

The PULSE DIVIDER section of this dual function module takes an incoming clock or square wave and outputs a division of its frequency. This is useful for producing time based events that are an even clock division. An example use of this module would be to fire an Envelope generator on every second step of a sequence or use in conjunction with the Boolean module to produce unusual rhythms or to use in the audio range to produce sub octaves below a square wave frequency.

Features:
Divides a single pulse input into 2,4,8,16,32,64 and 128 divisions
Can be used as an octave divider in audio range
All seven outputs can be used simultaneously
Ideal analogue sequencer utility module

The second section of this module is a Voltage Controlled switch. When the Gate input is held high the switch passes the X input to the X/Y output. When the gate is low the Y input is switched to output at the X/Y. The opposite can also exist where a signal at the X/Y input can be switched to output from the X or Y jacks

Features:
Switch between 2 inputs to 1 output or 1 input to 2 outputs
Input signals for switching can be modulation voltages, gates and audio

Pulse Divider:
Inputs: 50k ohms
Outputs: 1k ohms
Signal Output: 0-5 V
Signal Input: 0-5 V

Dual Switch:
Inputs: 50k ohms
Outputs: 1k ohms
Signal Output: 5V Pk-Pk
Signal Input: 5V Pk-Pk
Gate Input +5V

Current Requirements:
+20mA at +15V
-15mA at -15V"

Modcan 16A Dual X-Fade / Attentuator

via this auction
"http://www.modcan.com/modhtml/modules.html

This is a module with 2 sections.
The top section is a dual crossfader that does linear cross fading of two input signals.

Cross-fades are accomplished by simultaneously increasing and decreasing the gain of two signals using complimentary VCAs. If only one signal input is used then it works more like a conventional VCA and fades between signal and silence.

Ideal for linear cross fading between two LFO's applied to a filter cutoff or other CV input and for use as a VCA for voltages. This module can be used for audio, but it is best suited for CV processing. For audio cross fading the Vector Fade 34A or VCA Panner 21A is a better choice.

The second section is a separate dual general purpose attenuator

Features:
Dual module
Manual and voltage control of x-fade
Linear response
Additional standard utility attenuator section

Input 5V p-p
Output 5V p-p
CV sens 0-5V"

Modcan Powered Case - old version

via this auction
"this is the old style modcan case. the modules mount on top of the face plate instead of flush. Also, the black frame does not come off in the same way as the newer cases. minor rack rash but the enamel is in good shape w/no scratches. comes w/the IEC power cable but not the cable to connect to other modcan cabinets, Modcan sends you those when you buy an unpowered cabinet

I also have to mention in interest of full disclosure that the PSU has an audible hum. not in the signal path or anything like that.. THE POWER IS CLEAN! .. just the PSU itself puts off a low volume sound. not a noise or a buzz or anything like that.. just a little sound of electricity. it's not something you will hear over any music you are making..."

Flight of Harmony Barebones Kits

via Geargasstore on Ebay
Flight of Harmony Plague Bearer Barebones Kit
"The Plague Bearer Barebones Pack (PBBP) is a low-cost alternative to the standalone or a module. The PBBP contains just enough components to provide full functionality, no extras or "frills". The PBBP can be customized, however, with different knob colors, extra jacks, different format jacks, or even with the pots supplied loose and headers attached to the PCB instead. The PB boards have been re-designed and improved over the previous versions. These were designed with modular options in mind, and have more flexible connection options. The default board pack uses the standard Blacet 4-pin connector, but the board has mounting holes for the Doepfer A100 10-pin power connector. Actually, it has holes for a 5-pin SIP connector which is one side of the Doepfer connector but the unit draws less than 30mA at peak usage.

With this kit, you can design your own Sound of Shadows Eurorack module or adapt it to other synthesizer interfaces.

Features
* fully-assembled and tested PB filter board
* soft-touch knobs with red indicator (other colors available on request)
* 3.5mm mono phone jacks
* 2-pin 24ga. 0.100 Amp IDC connectors (for High CV, Low CV, Audio In, Audio Out)
* 4-pin 24ga. 0.156 Amp IDC power connector"

4ms Pedals Bend Matrix

via this auction

"The complete Bend Matrix. Selectable 4x8 Matrix or Dual 2x4. Four analog real-time controls and 16 effects, MIDI in/out. Sixteen 1/4" jacks, sixteen 1/8" jacks. Sixteen banks of 8 patches each, with sequencer and long-term memory. Suitable for controlling circuit bent instruments, patching modular synths, routing effects/signals/video/etc. MIDI functionality can be custom programmed to your needs (note on/off, CC, pitchwheel)

what is the bend matrix?
the bend matrix is a midi sequencer for circuit bent projects
...a dynamic tool to store and recall your analog synth patches
...a microcontroller brain that leeches onto a host circuit
...a signal router/mixer that can be played like an instrument and patched to your other midi gear
...an octophonic surround-sound system controller for routing and spinning 4 inputs to 8 outputs
...a circuit bending controller for live performance, e.g. turn a thrift-store kids keyboard into an arpeggiating, sequenced, midi-controlled player piano (forget squinting over a pcb with an alligator clip in the dark trying to find your glitch point!)
...an automatic patch-bay and sequencer with real-time analog controls: strobe, arp, gloob, random.
...a meta-instrument: play the playing of other sound-makers, routing them into each other, multiple outputs/effects, programming and saving patches

what does the bend matrix do?
connect/disconnect glitch points within an external circuit-bent device (two separate 4x4 matrices or one single 4x8 matrix)
connect/disconnect/route audio inputs into multiple outputs (4 inputs=>8 outputs or 8=>4)
act as a patch matrix for modular synthesizers, or other cv/signal routing
store up to 128 "patches" in memory (memory is held even when power is disconnected)
sequence the 128 stored patches at specified bpm (2 - 2000 bpm)
generate random patches
apply effects to the current patch (or sequence of patches) using analog controls: randomization, arpeggiation, strobing, gloobing.
inputs midi note/cc commands, so you can program your patches and sequences using standard midi gear
outputs midi note/cc commands, so you can use the bend matrix to sync up to other midi gear (video effects, etc...)

how might i use it?
a. circuit bending
add midi in/out to your circuit bent projects
program/save/recall patches of bend points
sequence trigger points to essentially convert any sound generating device into a player piano
real-time analog controls (joystick, knobs, photocells) provide special effects/glitching/strobing/arpeggiation and randomization

b. effect switching/re-ordering
change effect ordering and routings on the fly: store up to 8 patches per bank, with 16 banks
series, parallel, and series-parallel configurations possible
sequence your effect changes, so you can simply hit "next" after each song and the next effect ordering up to 4 effects in any order and combination of in/out of the loop
dynamic re-routing
external stomp switches and rack-mounting optionally available.

c. modular synthesizers
patch synth modules together using a central button matrix to control routings
save/recall patches, (8 per bank, 16 total banks = 128 patches)
sequence patches within banks, sequence playback of multiple banks
split matrix functionality allows one half to control patches (e.g. lfo->vcf, adsr->vca, etc) while the other half can send midi note commands or make

d. art installations
flexible configuration allows a variety of sound sources and amplifiers to be dynamically routed (16 total bi-directional ports: e.g 4 inputs => 8 outputs, or two separate 4 in => 4 out...)
route trigger/sensor/microphone signals to various processing devices
outputs can trigger lights, sounds, motion, anything that runs on electrical power (use your imagination!) customizable matrix size and configurations available

9vdc powersupply required(not included) (120/240v).
2mm aluminum panel 12" x 10" on aluminum box (2" tall)."

Zebranalogic Oscillator III and IV

via Geargasstore on Ebay
Zebranalogic Oscillator III
"This one of Zebranalogic's first units. This Synthesizer includes 5 modules and consists of a noise white and 4 Vco's configured in various frequencies, which helps to create nuances between the oscillators, when doing the final mix. What's interesting about this module is that the Vco's can module their respective Lfo's and they can also be mixed with all the sounds generated by this synthesizer. This, thanks to a 5-channel mixer which has a monoural output. The Lfo control has been modified for better control and some details on the Vco have been perfected to create more aleatory sounds. The Noise White has been modified with more gain.

This unit comes with a 110ac - 220ac Adaptor
Output 1/4.
Case made of transparent Plexi-glass.

Features
* Hand wired
* 4 VCOs
* 5 modules built in"

Zebranalogic Oscillator IV
"This Synthesizer comes with the same components as the Oscillator III, but with an added Midi (in/thru). The Midi control has been modified to reach greater range of control surfaces and a Midi thru port has been added, the only channel 1 used is to detect the on and off note. This Synthesizer comes with 4 analogue effects, such as Fuzz, Phase, Envelope Filter and Tremolo, which works as a Vca.

The mixer is a 5-channel one. Monoural Output 1/4. This unit comes with a 110ac - 220ac Adaptor. The Lfo control has been modified for better control and some details on the Vco have been perfected to create more aleatory sounds. The Noise White has been modified with more gain.
