Vintage Hammond Solovox

via this auction
"1940s Hammond Solovox with tone cabinet in working condtion. This was made in the 40s or 50s. It was made to accompany a piano. It would attatch to the piano and has a knee control, it was one of the first Synthasizer ever made. It is a model L series A (cabinet also)Its kinda odd looking thing and it actually works, it takes a while to warm up and a few keys you have to push down harder than others. When I bought it one of the buttons was broken, I bought another keyboard model j and replaced the broken button, so whoever buys this will get the 2nd keyboard for parts. On the front of the instrument below the keyboard there were a series of large thumb operated buttons for oscillator range (switch-able +/- 3 octaves: 'soprano', 'contralto','tenor' , 'bass'), vibrato, attack time, 'deep tone', 'full tone', '1st voice', 2nd voice', 'brilliant' and a switch for selecting woodwind, string sound or mute. The Solovox was able to create a range of string, woodwind and organ type sounds."

YouTube Woes and Clean-Up

Just a heads up. YouTube either has a bug on their end or they are rolling out limits on how many people you can subscribe to. Currently I am getting the following message when trying to subscribe to anyone new:

"You have too many subscriptions compared to your number of subscribers"

That said, my list really is way too long. I subbed to every single account that ended up with a post on the site. Quite a few of my subcriptions haven't posted in over a year and a ton haven't really posted new synth content. That said, I'm cleaning house. If you use your account for non synth videos and I unsub, just send the synth videos in directly moving forward. My contact info is on the bottom right of the site. BTW, if you have or know of any good YouTube channels with synth content that I haven't posted before, send it in. Just do a search for the YouTube account name on the top left of the site first. Any videos previously posted will come up. Note only videos that showcase specific gear goes up here on MATRIXSYNTH, general synth vids go up on MATRIXSYNTH-C. BTW, if your vids have been featured here numerous times, don't worry, I won't be unsubscribing.

iPhone Audio Sequencer Prototype

iPhone Audio Sequencer Prototype from Marek Bereza on Vimeo.

"A basic sample sequencer for the iPhone. 9 different sounds, 16 divisions to the bar. There's also real-time DSP effects: filter, delay, pitch control. And a channel mixer, so you can control the volume of each sample.

Built with openFrameworks and ofxiPhone.

Currently only goes up to 22050kHz/Mono, but I'm working on it."

Physical Sequencer

Physical Sequencer from Marek Bereza on Vimeo.

"'Physical Sequencer', part of Yamaha/RCA's "Making Fun Serious" exhibition at Chappell of Bond Street (a big old music shop).

The software is based on my iPhone app, thump ( mrkbrz.com/thump/ ), but this time, controlled physically rather than via a screen. There were 8 steps in the sequence and 7 different sounds. Each cell has a depth sensor with which you can turn the cell on or off. The cells each have a light indicating whether they're active or not and a light indicating the which part of the sequence you're on. It kind of makes you want to dance.

The concept belongs to Giuseppe Guerriero ( giuseppe-guerriero.com/ ) and the electronics hardware was done by Stefan Dzisiewski-Smith ( bycgwtsf.com/ )

Built with openFrameworks"

8 Bit Weapon @ 8bitsf from Jeriaska on Vimeo.

"8 Bit Weapon is Seth & Michelle (AKA ComputeHer). The group has performed their chip music across two continents with their arsenal of retro game consoles: Commodore 64 and 128, Apple II, couple Nintendo Gameboy classics, Nintendo N.E.S., Amiga 1200, Intellivision synthesizer, Atari 2600, Speak n Spell & Speak n Music, some hybrid lo-fi acoustic-electric drums, and an assortment of other vintage and toy synthesizers.

Inspired by classic videogame soundtracks and electronic music from the 70s and 80s, 8 Bit Weapon delivers a sound that is as unique as it is original. Clever melodies, nostalgic atmosphere, and energetic beats create a decidedly modern sound while maintaining a fun, lo-tech aesthetic.

This track is completely improvised in realtime without backing tracks or edits, and is for Buchla 200e controlled by a Haken Continuum multi-dimensional keyboard. All the sounds heard here are from the Buchla, with the exception of the flute-like sound at the end, which is one of the Continuum's physical modeling instruments called Slide Wind. The ghost echo behind the Slide Wind sound is from the 200e.

Thanks, and I hope you enjoy it."

Ripping the innards out of their respective electronic arsenals, this diminutive motley crew twist their varied sound palettes into corkscrew whorls of new shapes, sizes, and, yes, colors. Noise not noise, tonally consciously eve…n when they go all atonal on us, Color Is Luxury are true sonic provocateurs sharing a rich aural history that blossoms before your very ears.
