Moog Source Analog Synthesizer (1981)

YouTube via retrosound72 | September 22, 2010

"vintage synth demo by RetroSound

Moog Source Analog Synthesizer from the year 1981

The Moog Source is a very nice synth and the first and only Moog to replaced the buttons with a membrane panel. And the first Moog with patch memory.
The sound is fantastic, very deep and powerfull. I love the Sources incredible low end sound like the Moog Taurus 1. The best Taurus 1 emulation I have ever heard. In my ears better than the Taurus 3. The Source is perfect for very nice bass and lead sounds. For me one of the best monophonic analog synths ever."

If you are running Firefox, like black, green, and clean, give it a try here. If anyone wants to make the equivalent for other browsers, go for it. The image in this post is the one I used. I just went with the minimum graphic size in black and placed the image on the top right corner. Font color is #00FF00.

Hexaphone - Motion Filter

YouTube via hexaphonejam | September 22, 2010

"Hexaphone's Motion Filter is like a wah-wah pedal that uses your accelerometer to filter the sound of the keyboard.

The filter is a 24db Resonant Lowpass filter - you can adjust the filter's resonance ("Q") with the SETUP - FILTER REZ slider - this makes the sound 'wetter'."

"This is an example of my (2) Music From Outer Space Soundlab Pluses that I recently finished. The SL on the right is sending LFO and AR to the CV inputs on the SL on the left. The Moog cp251 is being used as a mult and also the LFO is slowly sweeping the VCF CV on the left SL. Theres is also a AR signal being sent to trigger the SH-101 and from the 101 CV out back into SL 2s oscillator CV. Both of the Soundlabs are using the S&H function as well...

This was recorded in Ableton with a little verb and compression. This was just a patch making beautiful soundscapes not a musically piece.

The synthesizers.com modular, and 2 MFOS Soundlab Plus Mini Synths are being controlled by the sequencers cv / gate outs. This was done to see how everything would sync to the sequencer and meant as a written piece of music. The sequencer has 3 cv outs, gate out and trigger out. If you have ny questions feel free to leave them in the comments. I also used an EH Memory Man for reverb...

This was done to see how everything would sync to the sequencer and not meant as a written piece of music. If you have ny questions feel free to leave them in the comments.

The Soundlabs and the 10 Step were built by me but I still have a few bugs here and there to work out, for the most part though Im very pleased with them.

There were also a few clicks and pops in the bounce that Im trying to track down. There was no clipping of any of my outputs throughout the signal chain and I am not too sure where they are coming from.

Thank you for your comments Sorry bout the shaky hands and the dangling camera cord!!!!"

"Episode 5 shows how to create a kick drum using just a filter. The trick is to tweak the filter close to self oscillation and then excite it with a short sound like click or pulse. The filter will go into oscillation but the regeneration (resonance) will not be enough to sustain the oscillation more than a short while."

"For All You Synth Nerds [Ahem!], Here’s the Basic Breakdown: The first oscillators ADSR is being triggered with a medium decay through the BBD and the Tip Top delay effect. It’s pitch is slowly rising and falling through a quantizer which keeps it in tune. OSC’s 2 and 3 are tuned to a 5th and are being sequenced by a clock divider + mixer with some heavy portamento via the dual slew limiter. They are also going through their own Lowpass filter which is being modulated very slow. Finally, I added white noise through a slowly modulated lowpass filter to bring in that very soothing sound of the ocean. The pan on every channel is being very slowly modulated as well."

MOOG - Memorymoog Synthesizer - model 345a

SN 1220 via this auction

"The Memorymoog is a voice-assignment polyphonic synthesizer manufactured by Moog Music from 1981-1983. Incredibly reliable and durable with an exceptional easy to use interface, It has the ability to store up to 100 patches in computer memory. It has six independent voices, each containing three voltage-controlled oscillators, a voltage-controlled 24db/octave lowpass filter, two ADSR contour generators, and extensive modulation facilities. This means that there are 18 oscillators, six filters, and 12 contour generators in the unit. However, there is a single set of controls for those components, meaning that their sound is programmed homophonically. So each program governs each voice identically."

"Watching my excited daughter board the School Bus for the first time reminded me the excitement of my freshman year in High School. This was during the beginning of the New Wave 80's music revolution. From Journeys' Escape album to Thomas Dolby and Herbie Hancock, as well as the artist of the Miami Vice Soundtrack. There was so much great synth music and so very little time to enjoy it all.
This song started as an autumn season tribute and ended up as a walk through the hallways of my youth. I poured on the gravy this time. No holds barred. No Polyphony left either. I actually layered some extra TS 12 pads in Audacity at the intro to the second verse as it didn't sound thick enough. The Roland D series takes center stage with warm chiming pads of the D 110 with help from the Quadraverb GT (chorus, reverb and delay) and ghostly Phased pads of the D 20 and Digitech RP350. The D5 has the Rhythm Card loaded up and is dedicated to drums and percussive hits through the Boss RSD-10 for deep Reverb. The Korg M3r has a panning/tremolo electric piano. The Ensoniq VFX SD has the honor of providing glossy synth stabs as well as some techno snare hits and the bass with the filters opened/modulated by the wheel. The TS12 is sequencer, handclaps and bass as well as synth/arpeggiator layered with the D 110.
All the instruments are mixed and run completely analog into the sound card. Then it is captured by Audacity (freeware) to be later synched with the video. So any program compatible with Audacity can be mixed in later and added to another copy of this video. I was going to solicit a driving lead for this song from my fellow YouTubes, but the logistics nightmare pushed me away (sending multiple copies through email.) Maybe ... Anyone have suggestions???"

"Bob Moog Live" CD and Release Party Announcement

"Bob Moog Foundation and Dan Lewis Announce CD Release Party for Bob Moog Live

September 22, 2010 – The Bob Moog Foundation and Asheville composer/musician Dan Lewis announce the world premiere and release party for a historic live concert recording, Bob Moog Live. The premiere event will take place on October 10, 2010, at the Lexington Avenue Brewery in Asheville, NC, from 3:30–6:00 p.m. Admission is $7, with proceeds benefiting the Bob Moog Foundation.

Bob Moog Live is the only known recording of synthesizer pioneer Bob Moog publicly performing on his famous Minimoog, the best selling analog synthesizer of all time. Created in 1970, the Minimoog celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. The Bob Moog Live recording took place on November 23, 1980, at the Asheville Art Museum and captured a performance by Moog, Abbott & Lewis. Local musicians Dan Lewis and Mike Abbott, an accomplished synthesist, rounded out the trio on keyboards, guitar, and ukelin. Lewis and Abbott performed with Moog twice in Asheville in the summer and fall of 1980. The CD features the latter performance along with sterling rehearsal sessions.

Lewis and Abbott composed all the music on the CD. Lewis, who preserved the recordings for the last 30 years, brought this project to the forefront. He produced the album to highlight a historic event and to create a fundraising mechanism for the Bob Moog Foundation. The CD, described as electronic neoclassical music, features excerpts from Moog, Abbott & Lewis’s live concert tape. Subtitled "The Gig Tape," it was originally recorded on 1/4-inch analog tape, thanks to Mike Abbott’s forethought.

The CD will be available exclusively through the Bob Moog Foundation's online store beginning on October 11, 2010. In addition to original music and instrumentation, the CD features Moog speaking candidly between songs about a variety of subjects ranging from the capabilities of electronic musical instruments to his life during that time period. At the time of the recording, Moog had recently left the company he started 25 years prior and moved from New York to North Carolina, where he started a new business, Big Briar, Inc.

Bob Moog passed away in 2005, and Abbott in 2003. Lewis remains in the Asheville area as audio engineer and arranger/producer at Acoustic Audio Recording in Hendersonville.

The Bob Moog Live event on October 10 will be a multilayered "happening" that includes listening to samples of the CD and brief informal lectures by Dan Lewis and by Bob Moog Foundation Executive Director Michelle Moog-Koussa. Live original music performed by Dan Lewis on guitar and synthesizers as well as an improvisational synthesizer jam featuring top area keyboardists performing on Moog synthesizers will provide live experimental synthesis as the musical backdrop for the evening. Jeff Knorr (The Funknastics), MaryFrances (Emyrael), Ben Hovey (Asheville Horns), and others will join Lewis on stage. A small exhibit of Minimoog material from Bob Moog's Archives will be on display.

Attendance is limited to 100, so early arrival is suggested. The event begins at 3:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon, and doors open at 3 p.m.

"While the recording is not 21st-century high fidelity, we realized it allows the listener to 'attend' a somewhat historic event and experience the only known opportunity to hear Bob speak, tell stories, and perform on his most famous invention, the Minimoog. In that sense, the recording is unique," said Lewis. The CD will be available for purchase at the event.

Michelle Moog-Koussa said, “It was rare to hear my father at the piano when I was growing up. It was even more rare that he would perform. The Bob Moog Live CD is indeed a treasure and a unique glimpse into a time in Bob Moog's life when he was taking a break from his professional life. He was relaxed, and that comes through in his commentary and playing.”

The proceeds from the event and CD sales will support the Bob Moog Foundation, whose mission is to educate and inspire children and adults through electronic music. The Foundation is currently working on its educational goal of creating a curriculum with professors at UNC-Asheville that will teach K–8 children science through electronic music, and its historical goal of preserving and sharing Bob Moog's extensive archives.

Online CD sales will be available after the event on the Bob Moog Foundation website at www.moogfoundation.org/shop."

Korg MS-10 played by trumbuthegn

YouTube via farthe9n | September 21, 2010

"This summer I've had a Korg MS-10 as my ally. I've read and dreamt about vintage synthesizers since the era of the retro pages in Future Music, but never owned one. There a clear limits to what you can achieve with one oscillator, and these limits is what these four tracks play with and explore. However, the semi modular work bench give some nice opportunities. If I had the time, I would make explanatory videos of some of the more exotic patches I've come up with, as I've not seen videos explaining some things I stumbled upon. Feel free to ask about patches if you hear that sound, and I'll try to explain. Except for multi tracking and panning (and touch of space echo on the last track), everything here is unprocessed sounds from the MS 10. Thus these tracks is somewhat of a product demo if this synth, however it is my hope that they might be worth a listen to others then enthusiasts of electronics instruments (colloquially known as "synth geeks"). For all of the tracks a dogma of cold, machine like 80's synth music has been an unreachable ideal, the funk is too rooted to let go, it seems. Now I'm parting with my one oscillatored friend, and starting the saving for something with a broader palette, big brother MS-20 perhaps. Hwæt!"

thanks for the patch guido!

its a little bit pimped up by the MS 50 with the pulsewave, modulated by the LFO and S&H (clocked by the LFO of the MS 20) and the trianglewave modulated also by the internal LFO of the MS 50.

all three parts where mixed on the "adding amplifier" of the MS 50

J.T. taked also the white noise of an diy analogsynth for the hihat, because the output was much higher as the output of the internal white noise from the MS 20.
Also the 2 second oscillator of the MS 20 was used for the bassline.

No external sequencers or computers/synthesizers (except the mentioned noise) where used. one take recording without mastering.

Pure MS-esses

Enjoy ;-)"

"·This is a 4 channel analog drum synthesizer with analog trigger inputs on each channel
·Very clean, all lettering perfect and working condition - Powers ON and I can trigger all 4 channels with small piezo element shown in photo
·See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mtwRtOGjH4 for what this can potentially do
·All functions not completely tested. Since I dont have the original drum interface, I cant verify sequencer with its MIDI looking trigger input connector, versus the 1/4" phone jack inputs for the 4 drum synths. No controls are obviously broken
·Some (minor) AC humm noted in headphone output, indicating power supply caps perhaps need replacing - typical for 30+ year old vintage equipment. Minor means you probably wouldnt want to record with this as-is, performance would be OK
·I'll include the piezo shown. You could have a lady friend sew 4 of these into your pants legs - two on each side - and you could trigger this machine by slapping 4 spots on your quads, while seated in a chair!
·Great deal for someone as these are very expensive as "vintage analog" gear!"

"Complete, hand-assembled x0xb0x in custom aluminum case. IO board has been modified from the original design to support an on/off switch mounted on the case. Does not include the required 300-500mA 9VAC power supply. Power supplies differ by country so it is not practical to supply every possible type (we suggest looking for the power supply of an old wired or wireless router--they often supply 9VAC, but be sure the current doesn't exceed 500mA).
This x0xb0x includes all rare parts (excluding BA662A). Q8, Q9, and Q10 have been selected for highest-beta value (above 300). The firmware installed on the MCU is SokkOS v1.9. If you have any questions about this build, feel free to contact us.
