Mark Mothersbaugh "How to Score a Film" [Mr. Bonzai - Hai! Interview]

YouTube via MisterBonzai | March 24, 2010

"Composer for "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs," "The Royal Tenenbaums," "Rugrats," "Rushmore," etc... Join me in the Inner Sanctum of Mark O'Devo Mothersbaugh's laboratory at Mutato Muzika studios in Hollywood. Working only with his early tools, Mark reveals the intense concentration needed to score an entire feature length film. Watching in awe are 3 junior Mutato composers, Silas HIte, Albert Fox, John Enroth, and Mark's evil twin, General Boy -- ein Muzika Doppelganger! This is the very first film within a film of this kind. Shall we dance?"

Yamaha CSY-1 SN 2810

via this auction
"This is the rarely seen Yamaha CSY-1 synth/organ combination. Yamaha's first ever synth was the SY-1 introduced in 1974, they also decided to build the SY-1 into a 2 manual plus pedalboard type organ cabinet and that's what we have here, the CSY-1.

This really is a fun piece of kit with some great sounds, very expressive too thanks to Yamaha's aftertouch (amazing for 1974) which can be assigned to different parameters. Although a preset synth it's editable, so the presets are just a starting point for sound creation. The synth section is playable from the upper keyboard OR the bass pedalboard. It can be played solo or can be combined with the organ sounds/bass sounds. The CSY-1 has it's own built in amplification/speakers, spring reverb and even a real Leslie type rotary speaker, the synth section sounds great routed through this."

"4-Channel floor effects adaptor and instrument amplifier.

The Stilton Adaptor provides level matching for convenient attachment of instrument-level effects devices into a modular signal path. Each channel features up to 30x gain (noninverting), wet/dry crossfade, and a compact two-way TRS connector.

This module requires 1/4" TRS insert cables for bidirectional transmission using effects devices. Instruments and their effects chains can simply be connected with a TS cable.

There are 4 channels of input/output to enable you to use your favourite stomp boxes with your modular synth or process instrument level signals cleanly."

PAiA QuASH and PAiA 8700 Computer/Controller

via this auction

"Quad Addressable Sample and Hold. If you have to ask what this is, this is not the module for you. It only will work with a PAiA 8700 computer/controller w/ the A/D converter to deliver delicious analog “polytonic” sounds! The QuASH provides four computer addressable S/H circuits in a single module. It features adjustable glide rate for each channel (selected by computer control), individual trigger “gates” and an individual modulation input for each channel. On-board address decoding allows up to four QuASH modules to be bussed together in a single system for 16 voice “polytonic” synthesis! This module is intended for the true PAiA fanatic that wants a complete and original computer controlled system from the glory days of the analog world: the 1970’s"

"This is the original “polytonic” modular synthesizer computer/keyboard controller! Analog synths met the new digital age way back in the ‘70’s! The 8700 processor is a 6505 CPU system using 1K byes (yes, bytes!) RAM, 1K byes ROM locations (256 byte monitor included), two 8 bit input ports, two 8 bit output ports, one latched the other buffered. The 6503 has the same structure as the 6502 used in the Apple II, PET and other computers of the era. A 24 key touch operated keypad is used by the monitor to allow entry and execution of user programs as well as controlling features not normally found on a single board computer including: a relative address calculator that completely eliminates normally tedious hexadecimal calculation and back-space key that eases entry and editing of programs. Pointer High and Pointer Low keys allow the 8700’s twin seven segment displays to serve the multiple functions of indicating both address locations and data. The unit comes with the CS-87 Cassette Interface Option, the digitally encoded 8782 keyboard and complete set of manuals. When used with one or more 8781 QuASH modules, you can achieve 4 notes or more of “polytonic” synthesis complete with software based envelope generators (see my other auctions). So why would you even want this in today’s MIDIfied, Pentium world? To complete a cool 70’s based PAiA synthesizer, of course. Talk about authenticity! The unit was refurbished and brought up to factory specs by the renowned Scott Lee of PAiA Electronics in 2002."

STUDIO ELECTRONICS MIDI MOOG

"STUDIO ELECTRONICS MIDI MOOG. MADE BY MOOG AND MODIFIED BY STUDIO ELECTRONICS... 3 OF THE BOARDS ARE ORIGINAL MOOG BOARDS AND 1 OF THE BOARDS, WHICH IS PICTURED BUT NOT THAT CLEAR, HAD MINI MOOG STUDIO ELECTRONICS ON IT.

YOU CAN ALSO FLIP VOLTAGE ON THE SIDE FROM 115 TO 230 VOLTS.

I DID DO A SEARCH ABOUT THE MIDI MOOG AND IT CAME UP WITH SO MANY DIFFERENT FACTS ABOUT IT LIKE THERE WERE ONLY 500 EVER MADE.....NOT SURE ABOUT THAT, AND THAT THERE WERE ONLY SO MANY MADE WITH THE ORIGINAL MOOG BOARDS UNTIL THEY RUN OUT AND SO STUDIO ELECTRONICS STARTED MAKING THEIR OWN BOARDS WHICH DIDN'T SOUND AS GOOD.....WHO KNOWS."

Moog Prodigy - iZ Technology Pocket Transpose

via this auction

"Model 3368X Serial No 11317. Includes Owner's Manual, Service Manual and circuit diagrams."

No mention of the MCV or PocKet Transpose. I actually put this post up here vs. MATRIXSYNTH-B for the PocKet Transpose. It's from iZ Technology who made a number of other utility devices.

"Pocket Transpose is a performance-oriented transposer that supports separate transpose intervals for each MIDI channel. Although many keyboards have a transpose function, it's usually too cumbersome for live use. Pocket Transpose makes transposing easy. Intervals can be set while playing, and the user can select the normal or the transposed setting from a footswitch. Guitar synth players can use the Pocket Transpose to set intervals on 6 separate channels, or use it to transpose all strings by a certain amount. Pocket Transpose provides en easy way to try different arrangements without altering sequencer data. The user can even set Pocket Transpose so that the drum machine channel remains intact.

* Inline 16 Channel transposer
* +- 5 Octave transpose range
* Switch between normal and transposed modes
* Separate intervals for each channel
* Transpose key signature and octave simultaneously
* All non-transposed data is passed
* Harmonization mode
* Footswitch controllable"

Radikal Technologies Spectralis Synthesizer Groovebox

via this auction
"SPECTRALIS - HYBRID-SYNTHESIZER, BEATMATRIX and SAMPLER
The Spectralis is the first groove-oriented Instrument, which combines the LIVE usability of the latest digital technology with the best elements of proven analog technology. We also have thrown in some other cool features which give the synthesizer much more flexibility than anything seen before. While traditional Sequencers are limited to playing back rhythm patterns and tone sequences, the step Sequencer of the SPECTRALIS makes possible highly complex sound creations which opens up completely new worlds of sound when used in connection with the programmable FIXED FILTER BANK. In addition to its outstanding analog sound possibilities the SPECTRALIS also provides DSP based sound creation, which takes care of all the ancillary needs for drumsounds and polyphonic voices. This sound engine offers 32 stereo voices with multimode-filters, sample startpoint modulation and unisono modes for killer drum sounds, creamy pads and a lot of other goodies.

Oscillator Section :
The Oscillators are the heart of any sound-creation. The Spectralis Oscillator Section provides 4 digital oscillators with continous wave selection, Oscillator-Sync, Ring-Modulation, Frequency-Modulation, Phase-Modulation, Bit-Reduction per Oscillator, Tune-Scaling, independent Glide for each Oscillator, Pulsewidth-Modulation, linear detune, 2 independent envelope-curves for each Oscillator for volume adjustment and pitchcontrol-effects.

Filter Bank Section :
The FIXED FILTERBANK was the core idea behind the whole Spectralis/Spectron concept. After designing and testing a multitude of various analog versions of the idea, we decided in the end that a digital implementation provided considerably better results. According to our motto – if it can be improved, let’s improve it – you can now benefit from the most powerful filterbank available today – at least in our humble opinion. The range of the bands now goes up to 40dB, the quality, the spreading of the cascaded band-passes and the frequencies of the individual bands can all be edited.

Filters :
Explore the full sound potential of the spectralis analog filter section. The 24dB Lowpass-Filter and the 12 dB Multimode filter both are self resonating filters and the exact tracking allows to use the filters as additional sound-sources as well."
