DIY Mattson Mini Modular Tripple Filter & More

What you are looking at is three Mattson Mini Modular filters housed in one 5U module made by Luka. The image is from this post on Muff's showcasing what people have made with MMM DIY modules. If you have an account on Muff's and are logged in you should be able to see the others. If not, I grabbed a few of them for you to see in this post as follows:

BananaPlug's "Squiggletronics edition of the MMM State Variable Filter. I added a 2nd CV input and an attenuator on the audio input. Getting this into one frac unit with 16mm Alpha pots was a tight squeeze. The skinny Davies knob kock offs make it easy to use. The jacks are Serge color code because that's how I do all my 3u banana conversions Blue acrylic panel from Pro-Modular with a bit of white spray paint."

Adam V's Frac 4x Gate Delay, and...

negativspace's "Quad VCA, kitbashed into a VC-mixer via a CGS DC Mixer board, with a side of LEDs."

One thing worth noting about MMM DIY is the circuit boards come fully assembled. Wire and Cable kits are available. You then go from there designing the faceplate, and selecting your knobs.

"The 1970's Brooklyn Rock Band DUNE featuring Vicki Zollo on Vocals, performing their cover of 'Venus' after a about 60 seconds of the progressive number called 'Clockwork'. This video demonstrates to some degree the changes in musical direction DUNE went through from 1976 to 1980. That said ... they did continue to mix progressive songs like Clockwork and more avant garde material into their live shows. Dune's Inna Gada Da Vida cover was very interesting."

The Syntar Turns 32

Today marks the 32 year anniversary of George Mattson's Performance Music Systems Syntar. You might recognize the name Mattson. George is the man behind Mattson Mini Modular. The Syntar, conceived in 1978, was the first all-enclosed keytar synthesizer. Before then keytars were just controllers. You can read all about the history of The Syntar on Carbon111.com here (you'll find a pic of Bob Moog playing Syntar prototype #1), and of course check out the Syntar label for posts that have gone up here. Below are two videos of Red Martian with the Syntar at the PNW 2009 synth gathering.

October Moog Issue of Keyboard Magazine

You might recall from this post, the cover and feature of October's issue of Keyboard Magazine is "The Minimoog at 40." It's worth noting there are a couple of other articles featured and currently online including "Bob Moog Lives" by Bob Moog's daughter, founder, and Executive Director of the Bob Moog Foundation; and "Beyond And Because of the MiniMoog" by Eric Norlander and Stephen Fortner. The latter features a number of synths "that shared similar design aspects, or whose makers got into the solo synth game after the market proved that Bob Moog was onto something." Below is one such synth.

Note this is not a Voyager, but the HELMTRONIC CHALLENGER
"Shown at this year’s Frankfurt Musikmesse, this aptly-named German boutique synth boasts four oscillators, two filters, and of course, a flip-up control panel."

Yamaha An1x control synth...the Blue beastie

YouTube via mik300z | October 04, 2010

"Only had it a week, but love it already:) The factory presets are totally 1997 dance scene so slowly going through and replacing them with my own. There is a monster of a machine lurking under the sheepish blue cover. These patches are my own edited ones apart from the step sequence part, a patch called "Alan". I'm not usually a tweaker but this thing screams at you to twist those control knobs. The An1x was one of the first analogue modelling synths, had great reviews at its launch and is still respected by musicians today. Nice to have a Yamaha in the studio:)"

CTRLR VST/Au plugin for Alesis Andromeda

via sempervirent on electro-music.com

"Just wanted to let everyone know that I'm starting work on the design of a CTRLR for the Andromeda. This will be a VST/AU interface for programming the Andromeda with your computer. It's been a long time coming, and the developer of CTRLR has begun the process of working out the details.

Please check this thread for updates:
http://ctrlr.org/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=30

I'll be posting rough mockups of the interface and would appreciate feedback from people who knows a lot about the architecture of the A6. Even after years of ownership I feel like there's a lot to learn. And I suspect that the interface will be very complex."

Neurohedron: Overview

Neurohedron: Overview from Tedb0t on Vimeo.

"The Neurohedron is a novel music instrument and multimodal software controller that I conceived of as a nonlinear sequencer—a three dimensional hardware interface with twelve nodes arranged as a dodecahedron. With this structure, there is no clear or de facto path that the progression from one step to the next may take, unlike the linear and prescribed nature of a traditional sequencer. In conjunction with its neural-network-based software, the Neurohedron is a tool for shaping improvisational composition and performance.

SK-Synth: A subtractive FPGA synthesizer

via stekern on electro-music.com where you will find more info including samples and download links.

"This is a project I have been working on for a while.
It is a subtractive synthesizer implemented in an FPGA.
Features:
* 2 DCO's with sawtooth, square, triangle and sine waveform generation
* LFO that can be modulate the filter, amplitude or pitch. Possible waveforms are: sawtooth, square and triangle.
* LP-12 filter with adjustable frequency and resonance.
* Filter envelope
* Amplitude envelope.

I have been using a Avnet spartan 3A devboard with a breakoutboard with midi connector and a I2S DA-converter.
In this device the polyphony is set to 8 voices, but it is easily adjustable in the VHDL-source code. I also have received reports that it is easy to implement several SK-Synths to achieve multitimbrality (on a spartan-3e board).

The synth is controlled by a computer application written in Qt and it runs on both Linux and Windows.

Using the Snyderphonics Manta on the Android Lust Animalia Tour from Christopher Jon on Vimeo.

"I recently returned from a five week tour with Android Lust where I played the Manta as my main instrument . The Manta is a touch sensitive instrument interface which can be programmed in an environment such as Max/MSP.

For this tour the Manta was controlling a Virus Rack and a Mono Evolver via a patch I wrote in Max For Live. I'm also processing Shikhee's vocals in real time (with a granular Max For Live effect) and controlling the parameters with the Manta in "centroid" mode (turns it into an XY multitouch surface).

Vintage Sequential Prophet T8 w/ Road Case, Extras

via this auction

"Here's a rare find - A killer vintage early 80s monster polysynth package for your consideration. Enclosed please find one 1983 Sequential Circuits Prophet T8 8-Voice Polyphonic Analog Synthesizer (recently serviced and working perfectly), a flight case (not pictured), T8 MIDI Guide, original manual, full set of schematics and valuable Wine Country Productions extras: A Prophet T8 Long Term Survival Kit and T8 Diagnostic ROM... fantastic polyphonic aftertouch keyboard (which was quickly licensed and put into production by New England Digital for the Synclavier VPK keyboard) and flexible programming possibilities.

Regarding the state of the instrument: As mentioned in the description, this T8 was recently serviced by a top tech here in LA and works as new. It is worth pointing out that the keyboard mechanism is in excellent condition (the tech mentioned that it was the nicest-playing and feeling T8 he'd ever worked on), which is an important consideration when considering a T8 purchase. All controls work fine, and I've tried to include photos which accurately convey a sense of its physical condition. There are some scuffs and scratches here and there, which is to be expected for a 27-year-old instrument. However, none of these affect its operation in any way whatsoever. Please note that one NOS replacement knob and one LED panel switch are included with the Long Term Survival Kit, but neither of these is currently needed (unless the buyer felt like replacing one of the slightly scratched knobs with the one from the kit.) More info on the kit and the Diagnostic ROM can be found here: http://www.winecountrysequential.com/t8.html You can hear some sound examples of this particular T8 here: http://soundcloud.com/majorhavoc/sets/sequential-prophet-t8-sound-examples If you're reading this, I assume you know what this instrument is and what it can do, but some basic background can be found here: http://www.synthmuseum.com/sequ/seqprot801.html"
