Inside a KORG DW-8000 with Mouse Waste

via Computer Controlled. Note this was originally sent to the Analogue Heaven email list.

"Has anyone here ever dealt with cleaning mouse waste from a PCB in a synth? I got a DW-8000 today, and the inside is just a mess. Mouse waste everywhere! Chewed up wires. What is the preferred method of dealing with this? I'm hoping to salvage this."

Note: the one thing I brought up on the list and someone confirmed is the risk of disease. Be careful!

"Another try at uploading this video from last night. I'm hopefully playing a show in early December, so I thought I'd practice performing with the 200e. Just knob tweaks here. After failing all night, this one came out ok.

All hardware in one take, with a little gain and slight compression in Logic to boost levels. It's a pretty quiet patch overall.

My apologies for the previous bad uploads of this video."

Sample and cold (Plogue Bidule + Analogue Solutions Semblance)

YouTube via GruithuisenCityMan | October 18, 2010

"Hello ! My name is Frederic Gerchambeau. I have made this movie. The music has been made in one take with Plogue Bidule (sequencer) and an Analogue Solutions Semblance (sounds). It is based on a sequencer i have made with Plogue Bidule. That sequencer is centered on sample and hold in a very complex way. Enjoy !
http://www.myspace.com/fredericgercha..."

Anta Odeli Uta (Plogue Bidule + Analogue Solutions Semblance)

An extra note via Frederic on the sequencer and why I gave this one the Featured label: "I have made with Plogue Bidule a very new kind of sequencer. It's based on sample and hold. But not the chaotic kind of sample and hold that is heard every day. This is very well studied and controlled and it's generating notes. That makes "Sample and cold" is the first track of its kind."

Tracking Gate Sequencer

YouTube via 4mspedals | October 19, 2010

"Alpha version of a Tracking Gate Sequencer from 4ms. One of 8 outputs goes high, in order from 1 to 8, each time a clock pulse is received. A reset jack lets you start over at 1. (so far it's just like the A-161, except with on-board clock and reset jacks).

The "Track" CV jack allows you to move between outputs using a CV value. So if you feed it a triangle wave, it will count up from jack 1 to 8 and then back from 8 counting down to 1. A falling sawtooth will count backwards. A square wave will bounce between two values... etc. The tracking feature only happens when the CV value on the jack *changes*. So if you hold a steady CV (or a sufficiently slow CV), you can still clock it. This is pretty useful for a "one step forward, two steps back" type sequence.

So far only one jumper is assigned, and it's Gate/Trigger mode. In the former each output will stay high until the next output goes high. In the latter, each output only goes high for as long as the input clock is high."

"Kort kort sommer" - on Roland SH-2000

YouTube via organfairy | October 19, 2010

"'Short, short summer' was written in 1979 where Denmark had had a summer dominated by heavy rain. It was performed by Torben Lendager and was a hit in 1980.

I took a little walk near one of the Danish fiords on one the last summer days this year and I think this melody fits the situation quite well - even though the summer this was OK.

The instruments used are Roland SH-2000 synthesizer, Yamaha HE-8 organ, Roland CR-1000 drum machine, and Kawai MS-20 keyboard. I recorded it back in 1999 using two Beocord 2000 tape recorders."

Oberheim Four Voice Analog Synthesizer

"Oberheim Four Voice analog synthesizer in perfect working condition with original working cassette interface, the synth tunes great and all the SEM units are calibrated and no tuning issues. The synth has some modifications, there are two ports on the top for connecting two included heavy duty 24 pin (I think) cables which have all the inputs to modularize the synth for every parameter on every voice! You would just need to build a panel with the patch cables and connect to the cables, all the inputs are documented so it wouldn't be hard for a tech to do..."

Bell System Technical Journal, 1922-1983

http://bstj.bell-labs.com/BSTJ/

"The scientific discoveries and technological innovations produced by Bell System research and engineering were critical not only to the evolution of global telecommunications but, more widely, they had a considerable impact on the technological base of the global economy and, indeed, on our daily lives.

Bell Labs is the source of many significant contributions, of course, in the area of telephony, but also in memory devices, imaging devices, system organization, computers and software technology, as well as acoustics, optics, switching, transmission, wireless and data communication....

With this posting of the Bell System Technical Journal from volume 1 issue 1 in July 1922 to the final issue published in December 1983, we are pleased to be able to open the vault of this knowledge to our global technical colleagues."

This one popped up on the AH list. You'll find a number of papers including "Synthesis of Voiced Sounds From a Two-Mass Model of the Vocal Chords" and "Thermionic Vacuum Tubes and Their Applications"

via cheater cheater:
"Page 57 and lead up on page 56: this is a tuned band pass filter with variable Q. You just need one tube, one variable capacitor, and one variable inductor. Works well up to "2,000,000 cycles".

Also see the next point on page 60: Feed-Back Amplifiers. Looks fairly interestingly like a ladder filter, don't you think? And uses resistances. This means: voltage control!!"

Update via Eric Barbour of metasonix in the comments: "No. It is not a 'ladder filter'. This was a very early article about tube amplifiers, and all the discussion focuses on their use in telephone installations, primarily as repeater amps."
