Polyfoo arduino synth

via Tobias Wahlström

"I have made a synth with a low-fi sound and some kind of polyphony and MIDI interface. Since I am better at software than hardware I wanted to use as little external hardware as possible. I have tried to make it easy to understand and use. No fancy optimizations more than some simple ones I really had to do to make it work.

On my site there are photos, source code and sound samples.

I provide it with no particular licesense - it would just be fun if someone else than me can have fun with it - or even improve it..."

egadz is on tour this fall with sole & the skyrider band."

Look for several more tests/demos I'll be doing of this exciting new module."

Moog Taurus II Bass Synthesizer

via this auction

"set of vintage Moog Taurus II synthesizer bass pedals. These pedals come with the Moog Taurus II Synthesizer/Brain specifically made for the pedals. In other words, you don't need an external sound source to power these pedals. They can be used right out of the box! The pedal board connects to the brain via MIDI so any keyboard, sound module, etc. can be connected."

Update: No MIDI unless this is a modded unit. Thx to byron kent wong in the comments for catching this.

Casio Vl-Tone Circuit Bent

via this auction

Pics and vids captured here.

video upload by kenzie2029August 31, 2010

previously posted "***To skip tech talk, 2:15
As you can see from my blog, this is not my first attempt at bending my Vl-tone. The first time through was OK, but glitchy. For my top panel I used a piece of stainless steel that unfortunately conducted the current from my potentiometers dropping the pitch. Also at the time, the only wire I had was too thick and stiff to work with. So I decided to rip it all apart and start over. This is what I did.

So here are the mods. I used a little help from Casper electronics, he has a mod sheet that gives you a few patch points and three pots. I ended up only using four of the patch points and all three of his pot mods. I also added three extra pots by externally replacing the VLs internal pots. Then I tested and tested and found twelve other patch points that I liked. So that is from the left all the pots and the black RCA jacks.

As for the white RCA jacks, they function as a switch bay triggered by the switches to the right. The smart observer will notice there are nine switches in the array. One turns the bay into a multiple, the top row (on-off-on) engages the bay or sends it to the switches below. Those switches a attached to capacitors and diodes to further change the sound. The pots about the switch array are part of a home made low pass filter with frequency and resonance. Then there is a volume and reset button.

Once the language of the sound and visuals are understood, you can understand the weather conditions very quickly through the perception of the sound; possibly quicker than if you were to read the information."

from the wikipedia link above:
"The Theremin Center for Electroacoustic Music was created in Moscow, Russia in 1992 by the group of musicians and computer scientists, under the leadership of Andrey Smirnov. It was named for Leon Theremin - Russian inventor of the Theremin, one of the first widely used electronic musical instruments.

The Theremin Center aims to achieve a co-operation of musicians, artists, scientists, and technologists who are oriented toward realization of experimental artistic projects. We envision the centre as a base from which to carry out interdisciplinary research in such fields as computer music, electroacoustic music, interactive systems, multimedia, including dance, visual arts etc., as well as a centre for the development and creation of innovative programs, technical devices and techniques.

From the start the Theremin Center was intended to operate on a non-profit basis and most services and equipment were donated by the founders and sponsors of the Theremin Center. Professor Jon Appleton founded the International Advisory Board and helped in developing the Theremin Center and establishing continuous relationships within the international musical and scientific communities. The Moscow State Conservatory has provided space. It was a part of the Sound Recording and Musical Acoustics Laboratory - the place where in 1960s Leon Theremin was conducting his research. Since 2005 Theremin Center became a part of Electroacoustic Center at Moscow State Conservatory."

YouTube via NoizeHack | October 21, 2010

"I just got a boss SL-20 pedal and I was playing around with close to white noise as the input and splitting to stereo, distortion on one channel of the output, reverb and distortion on the other and then mixed back together in mono. the sl-20 can ping pong and random split the output, so you get alternating sounds with a mono split to stereo. also it sounds pretty cool with an atari punk console run though it. the noise is coming from the feedback setting on the kaossilator."

Homogenized Terrestrials: Vintage Code

YouTube via trrstrl | October 21, 2010

"Created using Moog's Filtatron app for the ipod/ipad. It has a digitally modelled Moog ladder filter, oscillator, sampler and delay effects. You can mix the oscillator with a sample and audio in, all through the filter and effects, and resample it if you want (up to 10mb). The sample can be slowed down or played up to two times normal speed forward and backward and you can change the start and end points while it is playing. You can save individual samples as well as presets which are a snapshot of all of your settings at the time of saving. It sounds great and is highly recommended. Recorded with a Canon T1i (video), Edirol R-09HR (audio) and assembled in Nero, with a Moog Voyager RME looking on."

Cyndustries Burst Generator

via this auction

"Auction is for one out of production Cyndustries Burst Generator compatible with the Modcan A format, as shown in the picture by the arrow...

From the Cyndustries web site:

Ken Stone's enormously versatile and creative Burst Generator replies to a trigger input pulse - with a rotary switch selectable string of from one-to-nine pulses out. Bada, Bing! Bing! Bing! There's a choice between the adjustable internal clock or an external one, as well as logical outs representing when an "Event" is in progress, looping, or completed...

This can be used at slow speeds for example, to count the number of times a sequencer repeats before interrupting it's cycle, and then triggering another event to begin! Or the Burst Generator module can be used at pseudo audio frequencies for rasp and washboard effects.

When triggered by a keyboard, this versatile module can easily generate percussive Hammond Organ or woodwind type chiffs on each note played.

Lots of auto-compositional fun linking these together, or with the excellent Modcan 17A Sequencer or the Stone Gate Sequencers!"

Akai EWI 3020 wind controller+3020m analog synth module

via this auction

"Now, all the EWIs are beyond wonderful instruments, but there are reasons the 3020/m is my favorite:

- the 3020m is a real analog synth module that sounds huge, especially when you run it through even a tiny keyboard amp. (Not to dis the newer EWI 4000S, because it's great, however its digital synth is competent but not even close to the digitally-controlled analog one in this unit);

- the external instrument audio input lets you add the human expression of a wind controller to any sound (which you can trigger with the MIDI out of course), either on its own or in combination with the 3020m;

- all the knobs you need to grab in a hurry without fooling around (sensitivity adjustments for breath, pitch, bite, and glide sensors - and transposition) are right there, easy to adjust and clearly labeled on the 3020m's front panel. The 4000S has miniature knobs with black-on-black labeling that's impossible to see, hidden under a cover you have to remove, plus you have to go through menus and use a primitive display that you forget how to use if you don't use it all the time;

- earlier models required you to let extra air out the sides of your mouth, but the 3020 wind controller (8-octave range!) has a vent hole, and I prefer that. They kept that in the 4000S, the model after this one;

- with all its brains inside the external rack box you don't have to carry the extra weight around your neck that you do in the 4000S, even though the keys and mouthpiece are the same. Plus there's only one cable; the 4000S has MIDI, wall wart power, and audio."

the way in which a musician uses their mouth to affect sound production in an instrument.

This is a Max/MSP patch I put together for the 'Sound and Space' assignment in my Experience Design class at Victoria University of Wellington.

It watches for the shape of the player's mouth and adjusts a formant filter accordingly. Different pitches are chosen by the hand's position on the video.

I think we were kinda supposed to do something a bit more ambient, but I just wanted to make something expressive.

"WTF??? Built my analog, optical, theremin circuit into a very funky, 70's automotive diagnostic analyzer. It's got the biggest meter I've ever seen and some very, colorful graphics. The meter shows voltage and corresponds with the sound. The lightstick/slide rig on top is just for demo purposes, but very effective. For more space-age, sound-art creations, visit chamberofsounds.com" Note: The video went up at 11:04 AM. I just saw the auction and decided to move this post up with it vs. putting up a new one. via this auction Chamber of Sounds on Ebay "P.R.O. :: Funky 70's Optical Analog Theremin/Synth from Chamber of Sounds Up for auction or sale is a one-of-a-kind, space-age, optical, analog, theremin/synth. It's handbuilt by Chamber of Sounds into a very clean & wild, 1970's automotive, diagnostic case, with a humongous, working VU meter (shows voltage & corresponds with sound), funky knobs, built-in speaker and 1/4" output. Runs on one 9V battery that's easily replaced on the back. It's light-controlled and sounds incredibly unique. The handle & graphics are very nice, retro touches. The P.R.O. also comes with a complimentary LED light stick (shown in the video) and is signed and dated inside ~ you'll never find another one like it - guaranteed!"

Pd on Android demo: Can of Beats

YouTube via peterkirn | October 21, 2010

"Chris McCormick's clever and fun scene shows off Pure Data running on Android, via the free libpd created by Peter Brinkmann. Also available on: everything."

via CDM where you'll find the full post and download links:

"It’s a way of making Pure Data (Pd), the visual development tool for interactive music and media, more accessible across a range of applications and gadgets. It lets you embed Pd pretty much anywhere. It’s not a new version of Pd. Instead, it makes use of the standard, “vanilla” distribution of the free and open source software. What’s different is that it separates the sound processing part of Pd from the part that talks to audio hardware, allowing Pd to run on a greater variety of mobile devices and inside other applications.

libpd:
* turns Pd into an audio synthesis and processing library
* liberates Pd from GUI and drivers
* allows for easy communication between Pd and the code into which it is embedded (so you can send and receive messages with your Pd patch)"

circuit bent alesis nanosynth by spunkytoofers

via this auction
"same archeticture and power of the alesis multi-timbral 64 voice quadrasynth keyboards and rackmount synths in the smallest footprint available. the nano and bent interface is housed in a compact 1u rackmount enclosure. one of my most favorite combinations in a bent synth: extremely crazy sounds with extremely stable bends. you'll be surprised at how powerful, musical, and smooth this small synth is. 620 onboard sounds (256 available from 2 banks on the front panel, the other 4 banks are available through midi program change) 1 user bank can be customized or uploaded with any bank available for the nano or q6. free bank downloads from the alesis website (i'll be compiling free banks to distrubute for the winner). great breath controller patches available as well via patchman. excellent legato, responds to midi effortlessly, very crazy sounds in this one.

one is being kept for personal use, this is the one made available for sale.

here are the modifcations:
-matrix style 24 point patchbay on chicken head rotary knobs

-4 switches for matrix switching of rotary knobs

-led lighting and steel bezels for matrix bend indication

-green color illuminated power rocker switch

-modified rca outputs with 1/4″ jacks

-replaced internal lithium battery and modified with a a clip instead of direct solder to battery

-added midi jacks (in and out/thru)

-banana jacks added to patchbay for external bend modulation possibilities

-internally shielded cables

-power input added. this allows the standard proprietary barrel size to be replaced by a more standard power supply size

-brand new power supply (with said standard barrel size above)

-nanosynth pdf manual and bend diagram emailed to purchaser

-sysex banks emailed to winner

the two following demos are of the circuit bent qsr. they are identical in archeticture and is basically the same synth. very similiar sounds.

first demo is a standard note triggering with no velocity or midi controllers. the second demo is a 4 bar drum pattern with a bend being applied every 2 bars."
