Monopoly with polymidi sequenced from Ableton

YouTube via fuckingharpsichord | October 24, 2010

"So now my Monopoly owns a polyphonic midi-retrofit from CHD Elektroservis. 808 beat is done in Ableton. Theres a little delay on the sound because the sound you hear is the actual tape recording and plays a little slower then thza original sound. Not really special but I just wanted to show this monophonic midicontrolled polysynth."

Polivoks POLYVOX Analog Synthesizer

via this auction
"POLIVOKS (POLYVOX) - Rare, Soviet Era, 100% Analog Synthesizer
Duophonic analog synthesizer, with a 49-note (F-E) keyboard.
It features two VCOs, a noise generator, one LFO, a filter (low-pass and bandpass), and two ADSR envelope generators.
VCO1 can be cross-modulated by VCO2. Each ADSR can be switched to auto-trigger, each with independent rates.
The sound is quite rich and somewhat harsh and aggressive. This is more of a space-synth.
You can be sure that you will have never heard the sounds this one can produce.
It sounds like these old Yamaha CS-30's, but then fat filters like in Moogs. Produced in 1980x.

The supply voltage - 220-230V/50Hz. For use with 110/127V, a voltage converter is necessary.
POLIVOKS has 5-DIN output connections (adapter to 1/4 jack included). No midi, no CV/Gate are installed.
Dimensions - 780x490x195mm

This is Very RARE RUSSIAN MONSTER!

Was Made by the Military Factory in the Kachkanar City. The sound is fantastic rich and warm – 100% pure analog machine!

MOOG SYSTEM 55 MODULAR for Sale

via this auction

Tons of pics at the auction, including the inside.

Update1 via 3P in the comments: "That's not a stock 55--the FFB should be a 914, not a 907. Some other modules are out of place as well."

Update2 via eben in the comments: "it looks like this has been relisted [link], and is $15000 at the moment. it appears to be kieth emmerson's 'spare' modular system! also i just noticed they have used my picture of ms peel in the auction... "

36) CP3A (with locking pot mod)
37) Blank Moog Panel
38) 950 Keyboard Controller (RA Moog, 07/06/68)

The reason for some modules being RA Moog, some being from '73, and others dating from '76-'77, is because as Emerson would service his monster Moog's modules one at a time, he would swap between units. Although at one point this was an intact '76/'77 System, it has since been serviced and repaired, as Emerson's demanding touring schedule dictated.

The auction includes both original cabinets, (although the smaller top cabinet is in rough shape due to tour abuse), a reissue 22-space top cabinet, a reissue keyboard garage/stand, an original 950 RA Moog controller, and a variety of cables. Everything one needs to fully use this synth will be included.

As explained, this synth works perfectly and sounds amazing. We encourage local interest to come view, inspect, and hear the unit in person."

Update3: It looks like this may not be Keith Emerson's after all. The following is via an email from "Keith Emerson Business Office" forwarded to me by Michelle Moog-Koussa of the Bob Moog Foundation.

"Dear All,

Please post/forward this everywhere. Keith does not wish anyone to fall victim of fraud, especially for $15100 or potentially much more.

This item sold on ebay is claimed to have been owned by Keith Emerson.
It is either
1) constructed with stolen parts, or
2) complete misrepresentation (It was never owned by Keith).

Keith does own a small back-up unit that is supposed to be in a storage unit, but it looks nothing like the photos on this page. He has NEVER sold or given any MOOG units to anyone.

Keith asked the seller to disclose the name of the person who sold it to him, but he refused to disclose the info. (Keith has a very good idea who that is, and I'm sure you do too)

Keith requested the seller to remove the listing, and has reported the fraudulent listing to eBay."

Sound Opinions A History of the Moog

"Guitars, bass, drums…blah blah blah. This week it’s all about the Moog! The Bob Moog invented synthesizer has experienced a resurgence in popularity in the past few years. New artists love the analog sound, and many are gathering at next week’s MoogFest in Bob Moog’s adopted hometown of Asheville, NC. Jim and Greg talk to Brian Kehew, the Bob Moog Foundation’s official historian, about the synthesizer’s history and legacy." More details and podcast links at Sound Opinions here.

Elektron Octatrack Update

via Elektron

"Individual track lengths and time signatures

Every track can be up to 64 steps of length and all the tracks of a pattern can have both unique length and time signature settings. A master length parameter sets the number of measures the pattern will play before all tracks are restarted from the beginning. If the master length is set to infinity, the tracks will play and loop within themselves infinitely. This amount of pattern customization makes it easy to create intricate and continuously evolving poly rhythms.
Micro Timing

The Micro Timing menu brings detailed and very precise note trig editing to the Octatrack. Every note trig can be nudged back and forth on a 1/384th step resolution note grid. The resolution doubles when the time signature of the track is set to 2x. Lightning fast flams through special repeat parameters, off-kilter stutters and organic grooves are all made possible by the Micro Timing feature.
Dedicated MIDI Sequencer

Apart from the eight internal tracks the Octatrack offers, by the simple press of a button, eight dedicated MIDI tracks. Every MIDI track features an arpeggiator, three assignable LFOs and two pages of CC parameters. Micro Timing and individual track length and time signature settings further enhance the MIDI experience. The eight MIDI tracks can play in conjunction with the eight internal tracks, making the Octatrack well-suited for controlling other instruments during a live performance.
Parameter Locks

The parameter lock feature contributed a great deal to the functionality of the Machinedrum and Monomachine sequencers and is found in the Octatrack as well. A parameter lock allows individual parameter settings for all note trigs. Trigless trigs is a parameter lock variant that doesn't trig samples, instead they alter only parameter settings for chosen sequencer steps. Through the use of trigless trigs the melodic structure of for example a vocal loop can be completely changed. If the loop is subject to timestretch the pitch can be altered without affecting the timing."

Individual Track Lengths by Elektron
"All eight tracks of the Octatrack are playing. During the first bars the tracks are all 16 steps long. At 00:17 the pattern is changed. All tracks of the new pattern have a unique length, resulting in a complex rhythm."

Tama TS-305 first test

YouTube via sparkey1 | October 24, 2010

"Triggering my new Tama TS-305 with the Klopfgeist softsynth (the metronome click!) in Logic9 on 6 tracks sent out thru multiple outputs from my Presonus Firestudio. I tried to do this first with Ultrabeat / multiple outs, but the thing would not behave. Bass/snare/"hat" sound are running through some TL audio tube preamps and a snare through a Roland Space Echo. Toms are dry. Sorry about the crappy audio quality on the camera, just a quick first test of this drumsynth."

Alan Wilder Signs Pea Hicks Drumulator

via Pea of http://optigan.com/:
"saw Alan Wilder's RECOIL set last night and managed to get him to sign my Drumulator. This is the drum machine he used heavily on DM's 'Construction Time Again' album, notably on 'Everything Counts.' Also, if you listen to 'Work Hard' (a b-side), they even used the click pulse from the Drumulator as part of the rhythm track in addition to the regular drum sounds.

He told me he still has his, and dug it out recently, but it wasn't working. I also asked him why they chose the more "budget" priced Drumulator at a time when they could have afforded something a bit better like a Linn, and he said 'because we were cheap!'

also, here's a pic of the Recoil set, with Alan playing a Korg MS-20. I'm pretty sure he was just using the filter section, processing stuff from Ableton Live."

YouTube via sounddoctorin | October 24, 2010

"Bob Weigel Of Sound Doctorin' (http://www.sounddoctorin.com) compares the two version of Crumar's 6 voice x2DCO polysynth the Bit One. A short production of SSM2044 units were made. This is number 27. The ssm2044 is explored with more easy on the polysix nearby. But some good comparisons of the two units are made side by side and thought we can't be certain as to the precision of the alignments I believe they sound very close to each other but we can hear the subtle differences if we listen carefully in places. Hopefully the discerning ear can tell the difference between potential variations in tuning and the actual qualities of the circuitry."

x0xb0x & TB-303 with Distortion

YouTube via djthomaswhite | October 24, 2010

"Very basic and kind of obvious (except to me for a long time) video of the basic advantages of distortion in electronic music. In this example the subject is directed at Roland TB-303 and adafruit x0xb0x with a Marshall Rat distortion pedal. Techno, Acid, House and Trance rely on this simple addition to the sound circuitry of either acid machine to get the truly gritty sound needed for proper freaking out of the club peoples. Not a musical demo, rather a technical demo that will lead others to music."

Synth Basics Korg MS-20 VCA (Vactrol)

YouTube via djthomaswhite | October 24, 2010

"Bonus VCA from the patch section of the Korg MS-20. This is not the main VCA in the synth voice, rather it is a second VCA intended for use in patching sounds. Honestly, it's a crudely simple Vactrol based VCA that has audio bleed through a bit, like Lopass Gates (LPG's). The bleed through is not that bad, but it is noticeable for sure. However, Vactrol sound is warm and has a nice smooth decay. In other words, you cannot get this VCA to end abruptly. It always has the decay of the Vactrol. Enjoy the video!"

Synth Basics Korg MS-20 LFO

djthomaswhite | October 24, 2010

"NOTE: Sorry for the dryer buzzer towards the end of the clip. Wife, laundry, grumble.

Here is a demo of the modulation section of the Korg MS-20. Simple, but very effective. This is the internal LFO from the synth section, but accessed from the patch panel that makes the MS-20 so famous for being flexible and fun to own.

Basic shape control from saw to triangle to ramp on the one output and trigger length pulse to 50/50 cycle square wave to full wave minus small trigger pulses on the other. Frequency control and that's about it."

"If you always wanted to have one of the 200 Spirits ever made, or just looking for an extremely flexible and rare analog synth with a unique character and fat sound, this is your chance to own one.

A Moog design with routing complexity that satisfies the most demanding analog sound designers. I purchased it as an investment and to proudly own a piece of synth history, but given the current economy, I have to let it go for far below its value.

This Spirit is No. 62 (see photo for serial number). It is 100% functional, the knobs, switches, faders, pots, keys, audio and CV in- and outputs work well (all tested). The tuning stays stable...

- original power cable
- copy of user's manual with blank patch template and sample patch drawings
- copy of schematic diagram
- 5 additional CEM chips: 3340, 3340, 3350, 3360, 3360 (VCOs, dual VCF and VCAs). These are hard to find and not cheap. If anything ever needs to be replaced, it would most likely be a chip - think of them as your insurance to keep the Spirit healthy for a long time."
