"Three minutes with my favorite little drum machine"

YouTube via basswriterNYC | December 02, 2009
Be sure to catch 1:20 on in this one.
"Blasting through a few custom-made patches on the Handsonic HPD-10. Footage shot in Vrindaban, Uttar Pradesh, India in November 2009. Special thanks to JR for filming, Lila for set design, and Louie Rozier for editing and effects."

Some additional details via Elton:
"I fell in love with the Handsonic 10 and took it on a 40-day solitary retreat I did in the Himalayas last year... It was beautiful to program and practice for hours every day without interruption. I'm about to tour Australia and South Africa as a one-man rhythm section with an Indian kirtan band, playing drums on the Handsonic and bass lines on a set of Roland PK-5a pedals (triggering a Muse Receptor 2, a Studio Electronics SE-1x, or an Alesis Nanobass... haven't decided yet), and I thought I'd send this short video to my favorite synth site. Cheers!"

AdrenaLinn Sync v2 for Windows Now Available

Roger Linn's AdrenaLinn Sync v2 for Windows is out. The following is a brief snip from the news letter:

"In May of this year we released AdrenaLinn Sync v2 for Mac, our software plug-in that provides--and even exceeds--the beat-synced effects portion of AdrenaLinn III. Now we've released it for Windows, in both VST and RTAS formats.

If you use computers for music and haven't yet tried out the free 14-day demo, please do so. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. And please watch my brief video demo, showcasing the many inspiring sounds it creates." [posted here and here]

Mac version posted on June 7 here. Note the following on Way Out Ware from the recent news letter:

"A Cool Little Company Called Way Out Ware
AdrenaLinn Sync v2 was created in collaboration with a very creative small company called Way Out Ware. If you like the sound of the filters, audio processing and audio modulation in AdrenaLinn Sync v2, it's because of Way Out Ware.

What you may not know is that Way Out Ware has some very cool & creative products of their own:

1) TimewARP2600, a software emulation of the classic ARP 2600 analog synth (pictured).
2) KikAXXE, a software emulation of the classic ARP AXXE analog synth.
3) iSample, an amazingly deep sampler/recorder/looper for the iPhone/iPad for only $9.95!"

Roland 106 Repair - Part 1

YouTube via spindizzyman | June 13, 2009

"Taking a voice chip out of a Roland Juno 106 and sticking it in acetone to strip the resin. I figured out that Chip 4 was bad in my unit. I've never done any kind of electronics before so this just shows you how easy it can be (with a healthy dose of patience and a steady hand).

First you should figure out what chip is bad. You can do this by powering on the unit while holding the key transpose button. Then hitting a key and watching the display cycle through numbers 1-6. If nothing plays on a number or the sound sustains on that number (hit different notes to hear it change pitch) then you know what chip it is.

There is a great video on youtube that shows you how to strip the resin off a chip and hopefully repair it. This is apparently due to overheating and conductivity due to the old resin.

Taking it out of the unit is pretty easy and you can search youtube for videos on how to open up the 106 and get the board out with the voice chips attached.

I have never done any electronics work before so I practiced on an old VCR for an hour. I learned how to take out components and solder them back in until I felt comfortable.

It helps if you have a few drinks before hand to steady your hand and nerves. Ok, probably not but it was Saturday and I'm all about the tequila on a Sat afternoon with nothing more to do than some trial electronics work.

In part 2 I'll figure out how to strip the resin and re-solder the chip back into the board and re-install into the 106 to test.

All credit where it's due just google 106 repair and you'll see the videos I watched to learn how to do this or look up

Logic Virtual Programmer for the NOVATION DRUMSTATION

via this auction

"This controls all functions of the Drumstation that are controllable via MIDI messages -- tuning, volume, pan, cut, distortion, etc. Every voice is represented visually with all it's parameters in easy to read graphic colors. Nice for tweaking the sounds as your sequencer plays the music without having to do so at the front panel of the unit. A very simple page in the environment but with all the parameters for both the 808 and 909 sounds on screen at the same time. All real time tweaks are recordable by the Logic sequencer for real time changes on playback. You may also remotely control these SYSEX faders and buttons via a hardware control surface if you take the time to program the faders for your individual hardware. This is easy to do and needs only be done once and then saved. This will run on any currently tested version of Logic Audio (Mac or PC). It was created in Version 3.5 -- and has been tested extensively to work in all versions up through Version 9 (Pro or Express). (PLEASE NOTE: It has been tested with LOGIC PRO 8 but it requires the version 8.01 or higher as 8.0 SYSEX did not work). Just use "Open" to load the environment as a song document -- notes on operation are provided with the software. It uses one page (layer) in the environment. It works via the sending of SYSEX and/or CC messages from Logic via MIDI to the receiving hardware device. Please see the picture I posted here to give you an idea of how nice this software looks and how it will function. This software ABSOLUTELY requires LOGIC to run (versions 3-9, Mac or PC) -- it will not run as a stand-alone editor or with MicroLogic or any of the other earlier neutered Emagic Logic offshoots. It WILL run with Logic 5 SILVER."

Two Linns

LM-2 on top of LM-1. Follow-up to the last two posts (here and here if you find this via search or the archives). Thought this one deserved it's own post.

1982 Linn LM-1 with Tuning Mod

via this auction
"Here are all the details of the unit.

1982 Linn LM-1 - SN# 446 (out of 600~)

- I have moved the tuning pots from the rear of the unit onto the front panel where the panning switches used to be. The pan switches set the sound hard left, hard right or centre so they weren't too useful anyway.

- I have purchased matching Kilo knobs for the front tuners which should turn up in the post any day now and will be included (68 USD).

- This is one of the later Rev3 models which has extra filters on the bass etc and sound better according to Bruce Forat (Prince has Rev2 and 3 units). Also this has the better buttons which stick out and can be replaced (the final Rev3 units had buttons there were not as nice and couldnt be replaced).

- On the back there are two switches, one which changes the kick from LM-1 to LinnDrum kick and another that changes the tamb to a sharp splashy snare (these are both 32bit LinnDrum chips so you can put any singular chip from a LinnDrum in there).

- There is also a third switch that doesnt seems to do anything plus a parallel port that connects up to the front buttons and was most likely used to trigger the Linn externally.

The thing that made this unit so special is that it was the first ever programable drum machine that played digital samples of acoustic drums. Back in the early 80s drummers feared for their careers as they because popular because anyone could program their own drums now. With a price tag of $3995 - $5500 only studios could afford to own one.

To have a look at the list of artists who recorded with the LM-1 see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linn_LM-1 Artists include: Michael Jackson, Harold Faltermeyer, Human Leagure, Madonna, Prince still uses it to this day for his signature sound."

1983 LinnDrum LM2 with Midi and Tuning Mod

via this auction
"Here is a list of the things that set this LinnDrum apart from a stock one: 1983 LinnDrum - SN# 1270

- JL Cooper Midi mod - Allows you to connect to a pc and receive midi signals, so you can program the drums in logic etc and have the signals sent out to the Linn, very cool.
It can also be used to send midi to other midi devices etc.

- Added tuning knobs for Bass, Hi-Hat, Ride, Crash, Cabasa, Tamb and Clap. This took me 100+ hours to build the tuning board and get everything to work. I also bought the original knobs from Forat for $45. I didn't get to finish the sidestick tuning mod but have all the parts and instructions which I will include (the knob is installed/labeled).

- Replaced 8 sliders which were scratchy - I wanted this thing to be perfect so I bought replacement sliders from Forat for $15 each ($120) it took a day to solder them in.

- Replaced 2 missing feet and 1 slider cap with an original (will include spares from Forat).

- Installed large thumb screws which make it easy to open up the Linn to change sounds etc.

- I also replaced the batteries so it will be good for another 10 years.

The condition of the unit is fantastic with only a small chip off one of the wood corners (right rear) and a scratch on the Linn logo."

YouTube via olegtron | November 01, 2010

"A game console from the future. Players use knobs to tune 3 oscillators (3/4 CMOS 4093) and seek for harmony in sound and picture. Oscillators control 3 multiplexers (3 x CMOS 4516&4067) that move two light dots on the 3-color 38-pixel hexagonal led matrix display. Fourth oscillator (1/4 CMOS 4093) blinks the whole display. Sounds are mixed together with a parity bit generator made out of a CMOS 4070."

rsf Desktop Modular and Modular 11

via VEMIA

"Extremely rare and sought after RSF MODULAR 11 (only 20 Systems made) from 1976. THE Father of KOBOLs, EXPANDERS and POLYKOBOL. That system contains 3 VCO 11, 1 VCF 11, 1 VCA 11, 1 GEU 11 ( ADSR + AR ), 1 ALIM 11, 1 Multiples + 2 CV in + 2 Gate in, 1 VCP 11, 1 VCP 12 ( 2 EXTRAORDINARY Analog phasers / flangers with a GORGEOUS SOUND ) The system is built in a lovely wooden case. As in an ARP 2600, some modulations are prepatched for some modules. The sound is Massive and Wonderful! Nevertheless, it will need a good synth technician WIZARD to precisely Tune and Calibrate the VCOs as they are really ' out of tune ' at the moment! You can see some pictures of the individual modules on the official RSF Site. Runs on 220 V. Cosmetics very good. Needs tuning and calibration. In northern France. Collection by VEMIA should be possible."

via VEMIA

Also see this post and of course the rsf label below.

"For sale here is a RSF Modular 11 system which contains 8 modules + a multiple patchbay underneath. System has 2x VCO, 1x GEV(env), 2x VCA, 1x MNT(mixer), 1x VCF, 1x ALM(power supply). The modules need to be wired again, some minor repairs and calibration need to be done to get this fully functional again. Not many of these modules were produced during 1977-1978. Only about 300 modules maximum, and that for a total of 20 systems worldwide. So these RSF modules are even rarer than old Buchla modules, which were produced in quantities of 500 modules. This is certainly a great addition for the real analog purist who wants something different than the mainstream modulars offered today. The VCO's have a very fat sound and the frequency level that can be reached is amazing. RSF Modular 11 doesn't realy pop up everyday, it's just pure luck that there is another Modular 11 here on Vemia, otherwise it might take you ages to get your hands on one. A picture will be on display asap."

Dr Zinovieff's original Synthi A Up for Auction

via VEMIA

"A great chance to own a piece of history, and a wonderful example of a classic instrument. This is Dr Peter Zinovieff's own Synthi A, serial number 4016, which has been beautifully restored by Robin Wood at EMS in the last two months and is in perfect working order. Work done included replacing all three vernier knobs, servicing the joystick to make it a joy to use, and replacing eight pins with new ones - as well as getting it all up to Robin's exacting specs. Four badly-done mods were removed. The case was also provided by Robin. The earliest Synthis often didn't have cases, so Robin has spared one of his last few to make this instrument complete. It has a couple of repairs to the edge, visible if you look very closely at botom left and top right; and seems to have a small gap in the top left corner. But the metalwork and general condition is exceptional - see the photo. The main differences from the machine as designed are that the two main audio oscillators (VCO1 and VCO2) have had the stabilisation mod, and the input gain on channel one has been converted to a ten-turn pot - all very useful. Cosmetically it is very nice indeed, as evidenced by the photos. It will come with Dr. Zinovieff's full written provenance (he believes this is the actual Synthi used in the 'Every Picnic Needs a Synthi' advert), and his signature on the instrument wherever you choose. In the composite photo is a picture of Robin Wood and Dr Zinovieff after the servicing was completed in September."

RSF Modular 11: Largest collection worldwide?

flickr By jobenbelgium

"I think that this is the biggest RSF Modular 11 system in the world. Not seen many of these since the 15 years i'm playing synthesizers/ modulars. Also notice the RSF Polyclavier, wich gives you 8x cv-gate, sequencer, arpeggiator. The best known product by RSF was the Kobol Expander, which was also available in a monophonic keyboard, and there was also the bigger Polykobol, but these have been built in low quantitys."

Update via tesl@ in the comments: "The biggest RSF system is an custom full 8 voice, full modular patchable and with memorys aswell for the knobs and patches (yes!) its hosted all in 19'' format racks. Only 2 prototype systems where made. Peter B. was one of the conceptors.

The systems still excist,on is in Belgium the other in USA."

And via D' Naab 136:
"These big 8 voice systems with memory are not modular 11 systems.
These are systems composed of 8 x expander I's, 2 x expander II's, 2 x prorammers and polyclavier.
More than 2 exist:
-I know of one here in Belgium.
-One of these monsters was sold last year for only 9000 EUR in France.
-Another one was also up for auction at vemia last year."

AS Oberkorn MK3 Tutorial #09 - Creating an Analogue Sequence from Scratch

YouTube via rezfilter | November 01, 2010

"HOW TO: Create a sequence from scratch using the Analogue Solutions Oberkorn MK3 sequencer [www.analoguesolutions.com].

In this video, a melodic bass sequence is created from scratch by utilising two rows of CV on the Oberkorn: CVA (pitch) and CVB (filter control).

It's easy to see how quickly musical ideas can come together when using this hands-on method. At the end of the video, the section created live is incorporated into a demo song.

*Synths used in this video: Analogue Solutions Telemark, Analogue Solutions Station(s) X/Y.

Station X/Y was recorded into DAW to allow for multiple parts in the demo song. Some delay was used on various synth parts.

Drums are a combination of drum samples and Elektron Machinedrum."

The Voice of Saturn: Voltage Controlled Filter

flickr By Analogue Haven

"Eurorack modular owners can welcome a new manufacturer as The Voice of Saturn has made their Voltage Controlled Filter available for the format.

From the manufacturer:
The VoS Voltage Controlled Filter is based around a CEM3372 filter IC (4-pole resonant low-pass filter)- the same chip found in the filters of such analog classics as the Sequential Circuits Prophet 600, Prophet T8 and Oberheim Xpander. It features two inputs that are summed and then fed into the low-pass filter. The input and output volumes, cutoff frequency and resonance can all be controlled by VC (voltage control) or knobs. One other cool feature of the CEM series filter chips is that as the resonance is turned up, the volume level does not drop as dramatically as it does in other analogs (including the famous Moog Ladder Filter).

Modules are now in-stock and we'll update our website with more details soon!"

Steelphon S900 synthesizer

YouTube via JackOasys | August 10, 2010

"A look inside - Uno sguardo dentro -

Sequential Drumtraks 400

YouTube via JackOasys | October 13, 2010

"Drum machine in 1982, produced in Japan by Sequential Circuits Inc (Dave Smith) - Demo audio and a look inside ...
Among the features most appreciated at the time, the possibility of tuning and volume control for each instrument (programmable in realtime or step for each measure). In addition, the swing function and the function gave emphasis to the tracks the chance to "humanize" the dynamics of each individual sound. Finally, an ideal studio for his six separate outputs, which allowed the external process and individual groups of sounds. A drum machine that still deserves attention.
