"On this track, I'm playing the Moog Voyager RME throughout with my right hand. Occasionally, I'm engaging aftertouch to open the filter a bit. With my left hand, I'm sweeping the surface of the KO-Pro which, on touch, sends MIDI 0/127 to the MP-201 which is converted to CV and plugged into the Touch Surface Gate of the VX-352. I have T.S. Gate programmed to enable External Audio on the RME. The interesting thing is that External Audio is coming from the XL-7 that is being played at the same time as the Voyager, however there is an arpeggiator on its MIDI track in Ableton Live. Bringing it in brings in the heavier movement. To further add complexity, the X and Y of the KO-Pro are sent to the Filter Cutoff and Filter Spacing of the RME, respectively. The beats are done in Live. The Moog Little Phatty and Ko-Pro are layered in later to create some additional ambient textures."

Tom Oberheim Press Release - Pricing & SEM-PROs Signed by Tom Oberheim

"Legendary Synthesizer Expander Module Returns to Production at the Hands of its Inventor

Moraga, California (Nov. 22, 2010) – More than thirty five years after it first appeared on the musical landscape, the unique voice of the Tom Oberheim Synthesizer Expander Module (SEM) will sing again. Tom Oberheim, regarded as one of the world’s most influential electronic musical instrument designers, is reintroducing the SEM in three configurations, each of which is true to the analog design characteristics that were at the heart of the original device.

Musicians familiar with the layout of the original SEM will feel right at home operating the new units; with only minor hardware alterations, due to non-availability of certain components, the instruments are virtually the same as the first units that shipped out the factory door. The three SEMs include a model with a thirty-three point “CV-Gate” patch panel, one with MIDI-to-CV conversion circuitry, and the newest addition to the line, an SEM-PRO model incorporating twenty-one patch points along the top rail in addition to MIDI-to-CV capabilities.

Tom Oberheim points to a decline in the uniqueness in the sonic characteristics of commercially available synthesizers over the years as one of the reasons he decided to undertake the resurrection of the SEM. 'What happened in the eighties and nineties is that synthesizers became so perfected that they just lost their ‘edge,' Tom says. 'The old stuff has some real individualistic qualities.'

Tom will build these units by hand at his shop in California. He plans to personally sign each of the SEM - PRO units.

Prices are $899 for the SEM Patch Panel and MIDI-to-CV models and $1,199 for the SEM-PRO. Tom has teamed up with GSF Agency (www.gsfagency.com) to handle sales in the United States. For more information on the SEM line go to www.tomoberheim.com; the units may be purchased by contacting Geoff Farr of GSF Agency at 310-995-0100, or by email at geoff@gsfagency.com."

Boss PC-2 Analog Percussion Synthesizer

via this auction

"This is a rare classic Boss PC-2 Percussion Synthesizer. It was released in 1984 or so, and hasn't been made in many years. It's an entirely analog module, and has control knobs for sensitivity, pitch, decay, sweep, LFO rate, and LFO depth. It also has a sliding switch to select triangle or square wave for the LFO. It can be triggered either with the integrated percussion pad, or by plugging another sound source into the 1/4" input jack. It can be powered either with a 9V battery or a standard Boss PSA A/C adapter. The complete manual for the PC-2 can be found on Roland's web site: PDF manual."

Evening of Waves on my Microkorg XL

YouTube via joyoussound | November 22, 2010 |

"A very small demonstration of the 'digital' side of microKORG XL I made for a friend. It is perfectly able to imitate those 80's digital KORG type of sounds (DW-8000, DS-8, DSS-1). A little bit of modulating delay is introduced in the middle of the video. Maybe some glitched drums would work over this and I could turn this into a complete song. I just haven't had the time to do so."

vintage Synare 2 matrix drum synth

via this auction
"The Synare 2: This was Star's flagship model., with one oscillator with sawtooth, and pulse waveforms, white noise generator, etc. But this had assignable functions, ie. routing the LFO to control certain parameters at once. The LFO also added a sawtooth waveform) You could also select a wide range of octaves for the pitch to sound at, along with a fine tune function. A major adjustment was the introduction of a fairly advanced sequencer with different patters, and the ability to change patterns and octaves. You could also adjust the speed and the note(s) sounded by the sequencer.

Plus, it had 16 pads instead of just four. Retail price in 1976 was $1,395.00. Made roughly from 1976-1982 Extremely rare."

TR606 Zombie Mod

via locoder on electro-music.com

"Hi everyone, I am actually working on a complete new processor for Roland TR606 I have finished most of the code, so I can play and enter drums etc works great, I had a dead TR606 and looked around for like 3 years for a replacement processor.....no luck, so I decided to just code a replacement, I want to add features like shuffle, I have completed the code for that but it does not sound correct? in my code I have a variable that gets incremented every time the sync 24 clock signal has a rising or falling edge, on the first step I add one to this variable to give 7 clock cycles before the next drum trig happens then on the next I minus 1 to give 5 clock cycles before the next drum trig, so essentially I am moving the odd steps forward a little bit, but it does not sound very good on anything above 2 shifted cycles, its weird because my code is sound, but I am guessing that it is something else I have not thought of? I noticed that other people still keep the 6 cycles per step but shift them forward? so effectively you have 7 cycles for the first step and 6 for the next is this correct? I want to add flam, midi as much as I can or have various version? if anyone can help me with the shuffle timing problem or is interested in getting one of these mods done? let me know, I will post a video soon on youtube or something or I can email you one?"

Update via locoder: "I should also mention that I have completed, some small SMD analog voice add ins for the TR606 which include a 909ish bass drum, clap and snare, as you may or may not know there is not much room inside the tiny 606, hence me making the analog voices all surface mount."

Update 6/2/12: See the comments below for new info and/or this post.

Korg Delta DL 50 Vintage Analog String Synth

via this auction

"This synth has 2 sections. One is analog strings with Vibrato. The other side is an analog synth which can go from amazing leads and pads to awesome analog bass. The filter on this thing can really scream and self modulate.

The mod and pitch bend are very unique also, as it features the classic Korg Joystick which has pitch bend as the left right axis and modulation as the up down axis. Pushing the joystick forward modulates using the LFO and pushing backward uses the Noise generator."

Mutable Instruments Shruti-1 with SM4 filter Assembled

via this auction

"What is it?
The Shruthi-1 is a hybrid digital/analog monosynth. Its hardware design is deceptively simple, but the sonic range is wide: sometimes grungily digital like a PPG-Wave, fat and funky like a SH-101, videogame-y like a Commodore 64, weird and warm like an ESQ-1 ; but more often than not, truly original.

Best of both worlds
Digital…
An 8-bit microcontroller plays the role of the two main oscillators + sub-oscillator. This allows the generation of (aliasing-free) classic analog waveforms, but also wavetable/transwave synthesis and a trove of weird digital algorithms (sinewave bitcrushing, formant synthesis, phase distortion, bit toggling, XOR modulation).

... and Analog

Beyond this point, everything is analog. Most of the Shruthi-1s are built with the SMR-4 filter, a warm 4-poles “modern analogue” low-pass (no vintage IC). But you are in no way limited to this! The filter section of the Shruthi is on its own board and can be easily replaced. We currently offer 2 alternatives filter boards, one with the CEM3379 VCF/VCA chip of the Ensoniq/Waldorf fame ; and one with the classic SSM2044 VCF. More to come, based on vintage chips or modern OTAs and VCAs! From silky-smooth to squelchy or fat: pick the filter that matches your personal taste best.

The Shruthi-1 has an audio input: external signals can be processed by its analog section, under the control of the digital LFOs, sequencer and arpeggiator for crazy gating and re-enveloping effects. A perfect way of warming up the sound of your favorite VA or… cheesy organ!

Before all, a musical instrument

Designed as a tool, not a toy

Getting a microcontroller to make bleeps and bloops is easy, but this is not where we wanted to go. We took the challenge of creating an instrument that could play in the same league as a Waldorf, Ensoniq or DSI synth; and from what Shruthi-1 users can attest, we have succeeded. Gameboys and Prophet-VS’ both ran on 8-bit cores. Guess what inspired us…

Of course, you are free to use the “dirty PWM” or “8-bits” oscillators algorithms if nasty bleeps are what you are looking for!

Feature-packed

We have packed the Shruthi-1 firmware with plenty of great features: a complete MIDI implementation (large CC coverage, NRPNs, SysEx data dump including wavetable transfer), a 12-slots modulation matrix, a 16-steps notes/CC sequencer and advanced arpeggiator with some unusual time warping modes, and even a polychaining feature to turn several Shruthi-1s into a monster polysynth!

Hackable

Open…

The Shruthi-1 firmware is GPL. Schematics are released under a CC license which gives you the freedom to build your own synth. We also provide assembly instructions, BOMs with references, case drawings, and some analyses of the filter circuits.

... and low barrier to entry

Posting code and schematics is not all… The Shruthi-1 has other great assets that make it a cool hacking platform:

A readable, well-structured code-base in C++, relying on a freely available toolchain.
Schematics editable with the freeware version of Eagle.
An easy firmware update procedure: just press a button and play a midifile to upgrade your Shruthi.
Solid foundation for developing your own analog filters, modulations and effects circuits. We provide PCB templates and an experimentation board to get you started on the design of the next Shruthi-1 filter board!
So get ready for new filter boards or hardware extensions!

This is from the second batch of Shruti-1's that went on sale the other week. It was hand assembled and tested by geargasstore in our shop. It comes with the clear acrylic case with honeycomb patterns on the sides."

Musix for iPad Update

via Brett in the comments of this post where you'll find video.

"Just a quick update. The newest version of Musix (1.0.3) has OSC and Midi out. In addition, it contains support for inter-note expressivity. This means you can map midi features (such as cc, pitch bend, velocity, aftertouch) to horizontal or vertical movement within a note. As well with OSC, the location of the touch within the note is sent allowing you to do anything your mind imagines."
