Make Noise Rene

Description via Make Noise

"I think, therefore I sequence.

René is the world's first and only Cartesian Sequencer for music synthesizers. Named for the French philosopher & mathematician René Descartes, it uses his cartesian coordinate system to unlock the analog step sequencer from the shackles of linearity.

The primary goal of this sequencer is to have a maximum amount of artist controlled musical variation, with a minimum amount of data input. There are no menus, ALL editing is done real-time, and thus, the programming of René becomes a key performance element.

"cartesian sequencer," "geometric sequencer," "planular sequencer," "axis sequencer," "non-linear sequential tuned voltage map,” all of these would be good descriptions for René.

René has up to 4 clock inputs and 2 CV inputs which may be used simultaneously to achieve complex, musical patterns output in the form of quantized voltages, non-quantized voltages and two gate/ pulse streams.

The faceplate for the René is a printed circuit board. It is black, with white and gold graphics.

This module is 34HP and consumes 80mA worth of current.

Available from Analogue Haven USA, Schneiders Buero Berlin, Post Modular UK, Moog Audio Canada."

DUBREQ PIANOMATE SYNTHESIZER AMP

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"This is a COMPLETE Dubreq PianoMate. This is a 1970s vintage piece of interesting technology from the people who brought you among other things, the Stylophone. It's a simple polyphonic synthesiser working on the divide down principal from a master oscillator (I'm told - i'm not an expert on PianoMates but it seems to work that way.) The idea was that any pianist could add the PianoMate to a piano by attaching the two (bass and treble) two octave bars above the keyboard. The two bars have plungers which sit over the piano keys. when a key is pressed by the player, the plunger is released, makes up a circuit and a note is played by the PianoMate as well. The two (bass and treble) plunger bars are attached by multi-pin plugs to what looks like a small combo amplifier. This has controls for tone, voice, articulation of vibrato, speed of vibrato and master tuning. There's a 'swell' pedal to allow control of the overall volume of the PianoMate and an input and volume control for a microphone...."

No synths, but I'm making the exception on this one. Fascinating bit on the subtleties of tape.
"The Studer A800 Multichannel Tape machine remains the most popular tape machine ever made, and can still be found in studios all over the planet. Universal Audio's Studer A800 plug-in faithfully replicates this machine with multiple tape speed, tape formulations, calibration controls, and the ability to adjust multiple instances with one control. In this video we demonstrate the Studer A800 Plug-in, and artists and engineers give testimonials about how much they love working with tape and the plug-in."

"Dr. Bob's Modular" Benefit Sample Library for Bob Moog Foundation

"Acclaimed Sound Designers Drew Neumann and Kevin Lamb Create Dr. Bob's Modular Sample Library to Benefit the Bob Moog Foundation

December 1, 2010 – Asheville, NC/Los Angeles, CA – California-based sound designers Drew Neumann and Kevin Lamb have joined forces to create a sound library entitled Dr. Bob's Modular as a benefit for the Bob Moog Foundation. Sounds from Dr. Bob's Modular were sampled from a vintage modular Moog System 15 belonging to collector Dr. Howie Shen. The sample library of unique modular synthesizer sounds is available in the Native Instruments Kontakt 3.1 format at http://www.droomusic.com/dn_prodbundles.php.

The complete library of over 120 sounds is available for $50, while smaller bundles of 13 sounds each are available for $10 apiece. Purchase of the entire library offers significant savings. All bundles come with a special BMF electronic drum kit. Two compositions made with sounds from the library, “Bad Monkeys” and “BMF Carol of the Bells,” can be heard at www.droomusic.com and SoundCloud:

[Bad Monkeys get loose in the house. A short demo...

This was done entirely with one analog synth, a vintage Moog System 15 Modular loaned to me by Dr. Howie Shen. All sounds were generated on the synth, sampled using Redmatica software and loaded into Kontakt. Sequence written using Digital Performer. No monkeys were harmed.]

[Another one--this was also done entirely with the vintage Moog System 15 Modular loaned to me by Dr. Howie Shen. All sounds were generated on the synth, sampled using Redmatica software and loaded into Kontakt. Sequence written using Digital Performer. This showcases a sound set that will be sold at www.droomusic.com starting December 1, 2010 as a fundraiser for the Bob Moog Foundation. 50% of all proceeds go directly to the foundation. Happy Holidays!]

Fifty percent of all proceeds from the purchase of the library and bundles go to benefit the Bob Moog Foundation.

Dr. Bob's Modular is a downloadable-only sample library created to honor synthesizer pioneer Bob Moog's memory and to support the Foundation's mission of igniting creativity at the intersection of music, history, science, and innovation. Kontakt was chosen because it is a widely supported platform with powerful synthesis capabilities of its own. Kontakt supports monolithic file formats that make Web downloads and installations easy. There is a free downloadable Kontakt Player available at Native Instruments' website.

The full version of Kontakt is recommended for users who would like to dig deeper and want to edit and create their own new sounds using the raw waveforms.

Droomusic.com is a work of collaboration between award-winning and renowned composers/sound designers Drew Neumann and Kevin Lamb, who have nearly 70 years of combined experience working with analog synthesizers, both as builders and as players. The website offers extremely affordable sounds ready for immediate download.

Neumann and Lamb state, “Both of us became interested in electronic music through Dr. Moog's wonderful instruments—a passionate interest that led to our careers. We feel that this is one way we can give something back, to help a new generation discover music technologies, and to honor Dr. Moog's highly influential work.”

Drew Neumann (www.drewneumann.com) is an L.A.-based musician and composer of film and television scores for Disney, Paramount, MTV, Nickelodeon, and Cartoon Network. He created the soundtrack of the science fiction animated series Æon Flux and has composed music for many other shows including The Wild Thornberrys, The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy, and Aaahh!!! Real Monsters. He studied film, animation, and composition at the California Institute of the Arts. In addition, Neumann has contributed sound design and music composition for a variety of synthesizers, sound libraries, and software and computer products.

Kevin Lamb (www.premeditatedmusic.com) has worked as a keyboardist, synthesizer programmer, keyboard tech, and engineer for a number of notable international acts such as the Temptations, Chad Hugo (Neptunes), Guitar Legends, the BBC, John Wetton, Phil Manzanera, Tam White, Boz Burrell, Heitor Pereria, Steve Goodman, Simply Red, Thompson Twins, Icehouse, Vitamin Z, Take 6, The End, The Doors, Al Jarreau, Device, Tavares, and the Four Tops. He is an Ivor Novello-nominated composer for UK/European television. Kevin also creates sounds for synthesizer manufacturers and libraries, including Moog, Arturia, and Native Instruments. He is the designer of v4 firmware for C-Thru Music's AXiS-64 MIDI controller.

The Bob Moog Foundation (www.moogfoundation.org) honors the legacy of synthesizer pioneer Bob Moog through its mission of educating and inspiring people with the intersection of music, history, science, and innovation. Its projects include its MoogLab Student Outreach Program, which brings electronic musical instruments into the schools to teach children science through music; the Archive Preservation Initiative, an effort to preserve and protect the inventor's extensive and historic archive; and the future Moogseum, an innovative educational, historic, and cultural facility to be located in Asheville within the next five years.

The Bob Moog Foundation is an independent, donor-driven 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and is not formally affiliated with Moog Music, Inc."

NEW APPS AVAILABLE FOR THE LINE 6 MIDI MOBILIZER

"—Transforming your Apple® iPod touch™, iPhone™ and iPad™ into a complete music production studio—

CALABASAS, Calif.—November 18, 2010—Line 6, Inc. (line6.com), the industry leader in digital modeling technology for music-creation products, is proud to announce a dozen new apps for the MIDI Mobilizer™, the only MIDI interface for Apple iPod touch, iPhone and iPad.

“Developers are doing an amazing job of harnessing the power of the Apple devices and turning them into serious music-making MIDI machines – all made possible by MIDI Mobilizer,” remarked Chris Grigg, Mobile Products Manager at Line 6. “Prepare to be completely amazed at how much you can do with such tiny, affordable gear.”

MIDI Mobilizer is the most simple, compact, and portable Line 6 device yet. It easily connects directly with any Apple iPod touch, iPhone or iPad and coupled with MIDI Memo Recorder (a free app available for download on the Apple App Store), it allows musicians to conveniently play, record, and backup MIDI data any time, anywhere.

Following the announcement earlier this summer of the free MIDI Mobilizer Third Party Developer Program, over 70 app developers around the world are working on new apps that will support MIDI Mobilizer. In addition to MIDI Memo Recorder, there are currently a dozen apps available for MIDI Mobilizer: NanoStudio, NLogSynth Pro, NLog MIDI Synth, Music Studio, Pianist Pro, StepPolyArp, MIDI Surface, Little MIDI Machine, MIDI Live, bs-16i, and S1MIDI Trigger. [brief descriptions on each further below]

NanoStudio, for example, is a techno-styled, full-featured virtual recording studio complete with 16 sample trigger pads, a comprehensive sequencer, a sample editor, a mixer and 10 FX units. Another is NLog Synth PRO, which is a professional virtual analogue synthesizer with 192 factory sounds, powerful synth features, and more. Pianist Pro, an 88-key virtual piano for the iPad, has been highlighted in Apple commercials and recommended by the New York Times, Rolling Stone magazine, and others.

These apps are just the beginning – many more are in development and will be available soon.

MIDI Mobilizer is compatible with millions of MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) devices, from classic to modern, including synthesizers, digital pianos, effects processors, and Line 6 guitar amps and POD® products.

MIDI Mobilizer is available now, with an estimated street price of $69.99."

NLog MIDI Synth
"This app is an extended version of the famous "NLog Synthesizer" app providing external access from MIDI keyboards or other MIDI controller. The synth engine has been rewritten to provide polyphonic realtime response. Now you have a real synthesizer out of your IOS device which you can play with your keyboards. A MIDI interface is needed to operate with external keyboards. This version supports Line6's Midi Mobilizer. Other interfaces like Akai's Synthstation will be supported in future updates once they become available. The app is also usable without MIDI interface with on-screen keyboard..."

Music Studio
"Music Studio offers a complete music production environment on the iPhone/iPod touch with features and a sound quality previously only known to desktop applications and expensive audio hardware.

It combines a piano keyboard, 40 studio-quality instruments with sustain, a fully fledged 128-track sequencer, extensive note editing, reverb, real-time effects and much more on a user-friendly interface."

Pianist Pro
"As featured in the latest Apple "iPad is Musical" TV Ad, recommended by The New York Times, The Independent, The Daily Telegraph, Rolling Stone Magazine, and played live by legendary band Squeeze on the Jimmy Fallon show (NBC).

Pianist, the ORIGINAL iPhone piano, turns Professional in an all new iPad-only app with photo-realistic graphics and an unbelievable sound. Pianist Pro was the number one music app for the iPad at release and has remained high in the charts ever since."

StepPolyArp
"StepPolyArp is a midi step polyphonic arpeggiator. The arpeggiator does not play any sound itself, it transmits midi notes to a Mac or a PC to be used in combination with any sequencer, virtual instrument (VSTi, Audio Unit) or midi synthesizer.

The arpeggiator can transform chords into sequences of notes played one after the other in several ways. A matrix polyphonic step modulate arpeggiated notes in time and pitch. The main controllers (velocity, modulation, panning, volume, aftertouch, and pitch bend) are also programmable through a step editor. The integrated keyboard automatically adapts to the selected musical scale."

MIDI Surface
"MIDI Surface is a full-featured MIDI control surface for iPhone and iPod touch, brought to you by the minds at Audiofile Engineering (creators of FiRe - Field Recorder, Backline Calc and other essential audio apps). Designed for use with the Line 6 MIDI Mobilizer hardware accessory, MIDI Surface allows users to easily create and save their own customized MIDI control surfaces. It delivers seamless touch-screen control of MIDI-enabled instruments such as keyboards, drum machines, software synths and more."

Little MIDI Machine
"Little MIDI Machine is an analog-style MIDI step sequencer app for the Line 6 MIDI Mobilizer interface. This app requires you own the hardware Line 6 Mobilizer MIDI interface hardware accessory for full functionality.

Little MIDI Machine gives you the step sequencing power of a hardware analog sequencer on your iPad! Program two independent sequencers that send note and velocity MIDI data out on two MIDI channels to control your hardware synthesizers. LittleMM includes many of your favorite hardware sequencer features such as mute and un-mute notes, skip steps, reverse the sequencer, adjustable clock speed, etc. If you do not have a Line 6 Mobilizer, LittleMM can generate very basic melodic sounds in place of sending MIDI. This will let you play around with the app and try it out, but it is not a feature that will be developed further and is not the primary purpose of the app. LittleMM is intended to be a MIDI sequencer driving external hardware.

With Little Music Machine you can use your Line 6 MIDI Mobilizer interface along with your favorite hardware synth and your iPad to create mind-bending loops and sequences."

MIDI Live
"This application is designed for live performance using the Midi Mobilizer from Line 6. It provides realtime modification of midi file parameters including:

* Song Tempo
* Key Change
* Instrument Assignment
* Song Cue
* Mixing Parameters

It is possible to alter these parameters while the song is playing or save for future playback. Playlists are also supported. Songs can be freely downloaded from the internet or loaded from your laptop.

Note: This application does not make sound on its own, it requires the Midi Mobilizer from Line 6."

bs-16i
"bs-16i is a 16 multi-timbral playback sampler. It supports SoundFont, and can be used for keyboard instrument, MIDI sound module, and MIDI player.

The sampler engine is ported from bs-1 / bs-16, which is developed as professional plug-in for Logic (Audio Units) and Cubase (VST instrument).
Using SoundFont libraries, you can play with your great number of Instruments.
It supports all standard MIDI messages, so it also can be used as a GM (General MIDI) sound module.

As a keyboard instrument, you can play with scalable keyboard, pitch bend wheel, and many control change controllers.

Internal MIDI player supports SMF (Standard MIDI File) format."

S1MIDI Trigger
S1MidiTrigger turns your iPad or iPhone into a customizable touchscreen MIDI controller that can replace hardware devices costing hundreds of dollars. Connect wirelessly to audio workstation applications on the PC or Mac, or use Line 6's MIDI Mobilizer hardware add-on!

You can use the built-in controller screens or design your own, with touch pads (for drums and other instruments), sliders, X-Y pads and more. (Note: This requires a MIDI application -- it does not play music by itself.)

S1MidiTriggger is compatible with the open-source DSMidiWifi server, but for even faster response you can download our free S1 server software for PC or OS X. (A fast wifi connection is recommended.)

Don't worry if you don't have the best musical skills! With S1MidiTrigger, it's very easy to just tap some pads to play simple notes or even complete chords.

Rare Latronic Notron MkII Midi Step Sequencer

via this auction

"Only about 150 Notrons were made, and production on them has been discontinued. So, already, it is a collectible instrument and will surely increase in value as time passes...

It does different reset points for each sequence, can output 4 different sequences, It does LFO shapes, wierd ass stuttering things, step length stuff, pitch bend and mod wheel macros, chords on steps, some time-stretching emulation sort of tricks, delays, strums and reversals. Some of the other neat stuff was being able to group changes across multiple steps, and all of it in real time. Pretty wild box.

The Korg MonoPoly has 4 oscillators to mess around with, and the modulations possibilities are such that 9 times out of 10, something is doing something to something through the other thing. Flame MIDI-Talking-Synth Digital Speech Synthesizer

via this auction

"The FLAME MIDI TALKING SYNTH is a small-sized MIDI-controlled sound module based on the analogue Speakjet chip. It contains 72 speech elements (allophones), 43 sound effects, and 12 DTM touch tones. The idea was to create sounds, patterns and sequences in the 8-bit style of the 80s or other retro sounds for making music instead of just simulating speech. Most allophones can be tuned and used tonally. The FLAME MIDI TALKING SYNTH contains two Speakjet chips to produce a richer and more complex tonal variety as well as generating a pseudo stereo effect."

iPhone Music App Demo

YouTube via paulslocum | July 15, 2010 | 6 likes, 0 dislikes

"This is a rough demo of a new iPhone music app that I plan to release in a few weeks. It's a sort of musical instrument/meditation tool/artwork. Visuals are created by spinning rug and quilt patterns, and the sound is made from loops of Christian music played backwards. The final version will have more advanced sound control and several modes with different samples, spin patterns, and sound options. I will probably also be porting it to Android."

SIR SAMPLETON App for iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad

[$3 in the App Store, seach for "sampleton"]

Sir Sampleton is a sampling keyboard, which means it can record sounds through the microphone that you can then play on a keyboard. If you want the sound of bagpipes or bells, then just use Sampleton to sample some bagpipes or bells. Or if you want more unique sounds, you can make samples with your own voice or noisy objects you find around the house.

Sir Sampleton is inspired by sampling toy keyboards of the 80's like the ones produced by Casio and Yamaha. These classic keyboards were great toys, but are now expensive because they are sought after by professional musicians for their warm, low-fi sound and simple operation. Now, it's possible to have similar sound and functionality in an app, plus the features that you wish the old keyboards had, like the ability to save samples.

FEATURES:
◊ Sample through the microphone and then play your samples on the dual keyboards
◊ Save and recall your samples
◊ Add rhythm with the built-in beats and random beat generator
◊ Tweak advanced sound settings such as vibrato, note trail length, and sample time
◊ Put one sample on each keyboard in dual-sample mode"

Haplome + Press Cafe + Reason 5 from Steven Page on Vimeo.

"Nothing fancy here, just wanted to tell the world about how awesome Haplome is. It allows you to run Max Runtime apps designed for a monome WIRELESSLY on your iOS device. unionbridge.org/design/haplome/

In this example I used my old iPhone 3G connected to an ad hoc network set up on my computer. I'm running Max5 Runtime using Press Cafe. I routed the MIDI into Reason 5 and set it up with some of my favorite patches and a simple 8 bar beat and synth line

Let me know you think! Email or post any questions or comments"
