Plastikman - Ask Yourself (HighSage Remix @BurnStudios)

YouTube via shagghie | December 08, 2010 |

"This remix was a stark reminder that the reason I make techno is primarily to further the relationships I have with these machines. Each, an instrument unto itself, needs only to be liberated, instead of beat into submission by our artist's ego.
Techno has always been about the future that the machines will bring...about a dream of a far off place in space, or a post apocalyptic landscape...the machines still singing their song...while humans are left with nothing more to do than dance.
This video depicts those instruments, and my relationship with them. The 303 is the only instrument I've ever played...even beyond playing jazz horn for 20 years... that I've never felt lonely while playing it. Unlike every other instrument on earth...it is the one that speaks back to you, and tells you more about yourself than you ever wanted to know, and it does it with an attitude just to remind you who is boss.
Thank you Richie, for those early years especially...when you would bang on the 909 like you didn't care whether the world was gonna end that night or not...and for making me feel the same way when I last saw you live. THAT, my dear dear friends...is what acid is all about."

The gear: total analog path; tr-909 modified by Brian Castro in LA. Tb-303 into ts-303 pedal, x0xio sequenced off the 303, acidlab bassline 2 on harmonic 303 lines. WMD pedal on the snare. Al.so dynax^2 compressor on ensonique eps-16 string sample. Whole thing driven off 909/303 basically. Drawmer ds-201 noise gate on tr-909 open hats, then thru 2ube pre.

909 mods include decay, compression, tune range, drive, etc. Also hats pitch control...custom matching knobs too... Total destruction. 303 modded too...also by Brian Castro.... Best acid tech in the west..."

"This is a clean custom assembled, tested, and working dual oscillator synthesizer from the folks at VOICE OF SATURN. Has two CV inputs and one Synth + one LFO output. Has two LFO modes, LFO depth, and LFO rate knobs. Both oscillators have pitch knobs and range knob. You can choose between one or both oscillators running simultaneously. Amazing noise device!!!

Loosely based on the Atari Punk Console with some custom tweaks and an LFO front end, this box makes a ridiculous amount of different sounds, all from three 555s."

Two up for auction.

"The Rhodes Piano Bass was the first instrument introduced by Rhodes. The Rhodes Piano Bass was used famously by Ray Manzarek of the Doors, who would place the Piano Bass on top of his Vox Continental. It has a great bass sound that can easily be mistaken for a bass guitar, and has an amazing '60s vibe."

"The fact that this synth exists makes it very valuable but the fact that this synth is at CMS after just being fully restored makes it even more valuable.

I sent the synth to Phil Cirocco at CMS because I wanted it to be restored by the master of ARP 2600 restoration before I sold it. It deserves the best. Phil has meticulously gone through this unit and restored it to all of its’ glory. Phil said that it is in perfect working order other than one speaker distorts a bit on low notes at higher volume. Phil has new replacement speakers available, but it is a small thing and I wanted it keep it as original as possible. Phil has agreed to keep the unit at his shop until the end of the auction. I asked Phil to do me this favor for two reasons.

1) This synth is so valuable and rare that I wanted to keep shipping trips to the absolute minimum. Phil agreed.

2) If you want a mod or something changed, it is already at CMS. It will save you the cost of shipping it back and forth and minimize the risk that this valuable part of musical history could be damaged."

Update via bachmaninoff in the comments: "Good sound, especially back in the day. Paid $100 from Guitar Center in '94, not sure why the SOS article has it from 1995. Maybe it was released in the UK later than the US?

Yeah, I was really pissed when I got it home, and the editing software was a cut-down version, though it was touted as full (you only had the ability to edit all parameters via a random generator). Still have it, and the manual. I'd still use it if I only used hardware. Midi Quest makes editing software for it for both Mac and PC..."

Update via Astralform in the comments: "This sound module came out in 1993. It did not sell well and Guitar Center blew them out a year later for $99. The onboard sound rom was unusual and had samples from the Proteus 1-2-3 plus other sounds in order to cover the GM soundset. The internal FX routing was vastly superior to the Proteus FX module and any E-mu hardware module made since! The last run of these came in black and looked way cooler than the one above."

Modular Tracks by Joseph Raglani - SYNTH-R Modular EMS SYNTHI Clone

Making an album pt.1 "Girl Dot You". from joseph raglani on Vimeo.

"Decided to chronicle the making of the follow up to Of Sirens Born. We'll see if I can keep it up. I'm just in the demo stage and getting some ideas down. What you see here is all played live (well with a few sequencers). I've found that long hair and funny hats help with this process.
I'm playing a Dave Smith Mopho keybord with a Tetra in tow. Doepfer A-100, Synthi-R, Moog Voyager Old School (sequenced by the MFB Step64) and the Tip Top Audio Z8000 is doing some modulation sequencing. Left hand is playing the melodic part, right hand is tweaking. I only say that because it's a little hard to see what's going on from this angle. Recorded Dec 6th, 2010."

Lainhart December Performances - Buchla and Haken Continuum

A chance to see these instruments live.

"Friends: I wanted to let you know about two performances coming up soon, a new review, and a free download of a recent concert, along with some video performance documents as well.

First, I'll be playing a Buchla 200e/Haken Continuum set, as well as jamming with some of the other artists, at "A Night of Clutter" on Saturday, December 11 at Funkadelic Studios in NYC.

After that, I'll be performing on Thursday, December 16, as part of the "Super Coda Festival 2010", four nights of experimental and improvisatory music at Cafe Orwell in Brooklyn.

Next, I've uploaded the direct board recording of my recent Buchla/Continuum performance at the Omega Sound Fix festival at Alfa Art Gallery in New Brunswick - it's available on SoundCloud as a downloadable high-quality MP3

And here are some video clips (with camera audio) of that performance, along with my improvisation with Philippe Petit at the same festival, in which I play vibes as well as Buchla: [posted here]

Finally, Caleb Deupree at furthernoise.org reviews my recent Vicmod label release "The Wave-Sounding Sea", featuring early Moog CEMS recordings from 1973-75:

"The great Irish singer Harry P. Greene (born in Dublin in 1865) said of this traditional Irish melody, "It is a perfect example of pure phrasing far beyond the powers of that most limited instrument, the human voice. Only the violin can begin to do it justice and rise to its wonderful climax with every note serenely true. None of the great singers have tried to sing it; they know better!"

Since it was first introduced in the mid 19th century, this melody has remained one of the most recognizable and loved throughout the world. There have been several sets of lyrics written to be sung to this tune (the most popular is "Danny Boy") but the melody stands beautifully on its own."

I tried to troubleshoot with the polymoog repair manual but the manual stated that the HFO boards on the divider board could be the problem and it wasn't I just happened to look on the TL board and saw a resistor that was burnt looking and hot to the touch(obvious short) so i checked all caps/ ic's that were connected to the resistor and one ceramic disc cap was shorted out I replaced both resistor and cap and now both 8' footages were in tune. If time permits i will replace all caps on the boards.."

Tyrell to be U-He Virtual Software Synth

via Create Digital Music

"our project TYRELL will become reality. :-) ))
First as a Software Synthesizer, programmed by U-He (from the inventors of ZEBRA 2) and hopefully later as an analog hardware device.

Urs Heckman (see picture) is working on a Synth-project called DIVA. One part of the project is developing a module which is based on the ROLAND Juno 60. Exactly this synth was also the base for the AMAZONA.de Reader-Survey. Now, Urs will bring both ideas together and will create TYRELL – N6 as the first TYRELL Clone.

Since the last letter we have been contacted by three companies from Europe and China. Each of these companies has expressed interest to realize TYRELL.

PS: BTW – the Software Version of U-He will be free of charge for amazona.de readers. We expected a beta-version before Christmas this year!!"

The Son of Forbidden Planet - mk 04052010

via BB on the Wiard list: "For anyone interested in Forbidden Planet: I made a complete new score on the movie, also using Wiard filters, the noisering and the Wogglebug."

SoundCloud description:
"This is an attempt to make a 2010 version of the score for Forbidden Planet in honour of Louis and Bebe Barron. To keep things spontaneous I made the score from scratch and didn't redo the original score. So, it's A COMPLETELY NEW SCORE. This music is made entirely with the type of soundgenerators and modulators they could use back in 1954. Well at least the same type of technology. I just used analog equipment like noisegenerators, oscillators, lfo's, ring modulators, voltage dividers, tubes, feedback circuits, lab equipment, spring reverbs, tape delay and an occasional sequential switch.

Lucky enough I had Pro tools to put it all together, imagine that Louis and Bebe had to do it all with tape!

In the track i tagged the scenes in the movie, well i tried to, because actually i never saw the movie.

I have the plan to update this piece now and then on irregular base and put up new mixes with of course new scenes added to it.

I was thinking that maybe other people are interested to contribute to this piece. You could send me your files.

However to keep the score original and pure I formulate these rules:
- all sounds has to be electronic
- all sounds has to be analog and made with analog equipment, no digital sounds
- just original electronic sounds, no samples
- give me a name of the scene you contribute

Just to give you an idea, this is how Louis and Bebe worked on their piece:

The 1948 book Cybernetics: Or, Control and Communication in the Animal and the Machine, by mathematician Norbert Wiener from MIT played an important role in the development of the Barrons' composition. The science of cybernetics proposes that certain natural laws of behavior apply to both animals and more complex electronic machines.

By following the equations presented in the book, Louis was able to build electronic circuits which he manipulated to generate sounds. Most of the tonalities were generated with a circuit called a ring modulator. The sounds and patterns that came out of the circuits were unique and unpredictable because they were actually overloading the circuits until they burned out to create the sounds. The Barrons could never recreate the same sounds again, though they later tried very hard to recreate their signature sound from Forbidden Planet. Because of the unforeseen life span of the circuitry, the Barrons made a habit of recording everything.

Most of the production was not scripted or notated in any way. The Barrons didn't even consider the process as music composition themselves. The circuit generated sound was not treated as notes, but instead as 'actors'. In future soundtrack composition, each circuit would be manipulated according to actions of the underlying character in the film.

After recording the sounds, the couple manipulated the material by adding effects, such as reverb and tape delay. They also reversed and changed the speed of certain sounds. The mixdown of multiple sounds was performed with at least three tape recorders. The outputs of two machines would be manually synchronized, and fed into an input of a third one, recording two separate sources simultaneously. The synchronization of future film work was accomplished by two 16 mm projectors that were tied into a 16 mm tape recorder, and thus ran at the same speed.

While Louis spent most of his time building the circuits, Bebe did all of the composing. She had to sort through many hours of tape, and as she described it, "it just sounded like dirty noise". Over time, she developed the ability to determine which sounds could become something of interest. She may have invented the tape loop too, as she did not recall ever having heard of it before. The tape loop gave the Barrons' sounds rhythm. Together they mixed the sounds to create the otherworldly and strange electronic soundscapes required by Forbidden Planet.

Finaly: this project is for Mike 'Livewire' Brown, I hope that you get better soon."

André Stordeur

"This is André Stordeur‘s unique solo LP, released 1979 on Brussels’ Igloo Records. Stordeur is a Belgian modular synthesizer specialist with a fondness for Serge, EMS and Moog gearing (see my Wikipedia article for biographical details). Innumerable Stordeur patchs and filters for the Serge await the aficionado on the Internet. During the 1970s, Stordeur was a member of the Studio voor Experimentele Muziek, an experimental music ensemble founded by Joris De Laet in Antwerp, Flanders.."

"SEM-Studio voor Experimentele Muziek °1973 Antwerp - Belgium
Analoge electronic music studio until 1980
This video shows the members of the SEMensemble of that time: Paul Adriaenssens, performing amplified objects, Korg synthesizer MS20, flute and seashell, Pieter Kuyl,Chapmanstick and synthesizer, Maurice Verstuyft, flute and synthesizer, and myself trying to explain the musical sens of the electronics. This is only a part of the movie. The music is a set of different extraits of compositions and the sound is typical for that time. The end shows a concert were a modular synthesizer is controlled by one of the first computers that allowed to be programmed in Basic. A custom made set of DAC's, constructed by Rudi Blondia, allows digital and algoritmic control over the analogue sound parameters, acting as an automatic pilot for the composition rules. Since then I describe my music as 'music for the parameters', or parametric music."

Hollow Sun HSDV Drum Synthesizer

"HSDV is a new concept in drum sample library for Kontakt.

Instead of static samples and snapshots of synth drums with little or no ability to edit them to your liking or requirements, HSDV is a fully fledged five channel drum synth that gives you full control over the way you can sculpt and shape your electronic drum sounds.

It is loosely modelled on the original Simmons SDSV where noise and tone (pitched oscillator) are balanced together and then shaped by a simple envelope but unlike the original, HSDV offers various noise types (white, pink and red), multi-mode (LP/BP/HP) resonant 2- and 4-pole filters for the noise, a choice of waveforms (sine, triangle 1, triangle 2 and square) for the tone oscillator. There are also a variety of different 'Click' sounds to mix into the attack of the sound for more 'punch'.

And unlike the original, the filter can be swept and the tone oscillator's pitch bend sweep is also invertable on the HSDV for a wide and versatile range of powerful drum sounds and sweeps."

Rude 66 Monotron Mods for Sale

"As cool as the Korg Monotron is, wouldn’t it be nice if it could be controlled externally?

I can modify your Monotron to accept cv/gate signals so it can be controlled directly by an analogue sequencer, or through midi via a cv/gate converter.

You’ll get an external box with a seperate cable (as obviously the Monotron is too small to include all the parts) that can be taken off so your Monotron can be used as before. it's a standard S-video cable, so you can replace it. both the box and the monotron have 4-pin DIN input connectors.

The box includes inputs for:
-gate signal (5V)
-CV signal for oscillator pitch
-Cv signal for filter
-a switch for filter tracking
-a potmeter/ trimmer to adjust pitch cv
The box is connected to the Monotron with a 4-pin mini-DIN cable..."
