AELITA 3-VCO RARE VINTAGE SOVIET ANALOG SYNTHESIZER

via this auction

"AELITA is a 3-oscillator monophonic synthesizer with 44 keys, produced by the Murom radio plant in USSR in eighties. The device is housed in a strong aluminum body. Sound control is performed with handy faders and buttons. The synth has really impressive analog sound - it is convenient for modeling of fat analog basses, classic rock leads, hard razor waves, various space FX`s, noises, ambient textures and much more... It is able to form both hard and soft timbres. By activating the UNISON function, the number of simultaneously sounding voices may be 5 or 6. Because you can detune the three independent oscillators, it is possible to create "one finger chord hits".

The Aelita synthesizer consists of 5 basic synthesis sections, which are the following: TUNING, REGISTERS/TIMBRE (osc wave switch), UNISON/VOICE LEVEL, TIMBRES CONTROL (filter), VOLUME CONTROL (amplifier). A wide range of modulation functions are available, including RING MODULATION. The synthesizer provides a three oscillator voice, with the addition of unison function, which adds extra timbres to basic sound. Respectively, there are separate controls for all oscillators in all sections.

The TUNING section provides the "global tuning" and separate DETUNE 1/2/3 knob for each oscillator. Below the section, three parameter buttons are situated: RELEASE, UNISON/VOICE and STRINGS. By pressing RELEASE, the "preset released" mode is activated independently of the RELEASE slider in the AMPLIFIER section. Next the UNISON/VOICE ON/OFF button - having entered the mode UNISON ON you will get aggressive layered strings sound (see demo sample1). By pressing the STRINGS button, you actually activate the modulation function, which imitates stringed instruments vibrato; but in conjunction with the UNISON ON mode, it provides "strings" sound with a complex modulated timbre.

The REGISTERS/TIMBRES section contains the timbres range (octave registers) 2`, 4`, 8`, 16`, 32` buttons and the WAVEFORM SELECT buttons (square, triangle and saw). The MODULATION/LFO FREQ slider, also called VIBRATO/TREMOLO, is situated below; four LFO WAVEFORMS selection buttons are situated at the lowest.

Between the REGISTERS and VOLUME CONTROL sections, the MODULATION switch buttons for all oscillators (called VIBRATO 1/2/3) and the button MOD1*3 activating frequency modulation of the first voice with the third one; actually, this is the RING MODULATION mode. Combined activation of the buttons MOD1*3and UNISON/STRINGS makes it possible to get a uncommon compound timbre of sound. The section UNISON/VOICE LEVEL contains three sliders 1/2/3/ and three buttons for controlling the volume level and for switching the oscillators ON and OFF. One of the sliders is designed to control the UNISON level in the range 16í. With the button UNISON/VOICE at ON, the sliders 1/2/3 perform the function of controlling the UNISON level of the registers in the ranges 2í, 4í, 8í. Below the section, the MODULATION DEPTH (vibrato) slider is located.

The TIMBRES CONTROL section has two buttons in the left part: KEY TRACKING ON/OFF and LFO (tremolo on/off). Near the buttons, 6 filter control sliders are situated, those are the following: FILTER CUTOFF (called RANGE), RESONANCE (SHARPNESS), MOD DEPTH, ATTACK, SUSTAIN/RELEASE, DECAY (called LEVEL). Below the section is the TREMOLO DEPTH. The VOLUME CONTROL (AMPLIFIER) section provides the following functions: ATTACK, SUSTAIN / RELEASE, DECAY (called LEVEL), MAIN VOLUME LEVEL and controlled with the respective sliders. At the rear panel, a 5 din OUT is situated for connection of the volume control pedal or an external mixer/amplifier."

World's longest in-service Polysix original battery?

via Russ
"Well, maybe not, but certainly has to be in the running. A buddy of mine brought another PolySix by the shop today to have the ORIGINAL memory battery replaced -- it had been in continuous service since the synth was newly minted in 1981. 30 year-old NiCad battery still going strong; It measured 4.02 volts when it was replaced today, strictly as a measure of precaution.

While the battery was still in great shape, there were some signs of the beginning of leakage on the negative terminal, but only if you knew what you were looking for.

Dated receipt in the photo to show when the battery was replaced.

We're thinking of submitting the battery to the Smithsonian or Ripley's..."

This is Davey Jones's theme which he plays on an organ in pirates of the caribbean, played on my synthesizer :)

Also, If anyone has tips on putting sound and video thats out of sync back into sync please share your information :)

P.S. also notice my Synth's trademark discombobulated middle E note, sometimes it gives a nice edge to my synth making it sound old and wobbly like an old record but when you dont want it to sound like that its a problem... I need an external "KCV" (Keyboard Controll Volatge; I think thats the correct term)"

"This synth has huge potential for creating sounds, putting the headphone output into the external input yeilds strange and incredible noises, I didn't use the sample and hold/random LFO to make any of these sounds, I didn't connect that other synth either, it's just the Roland on it's own! They are all due to the feedback loop and sonic weirdness!"

SEQ541 - Free Sequencer for OS X

See this post for a video with SEQ541 controlling a Moog Voyager, Little Phatty and Slim Phatty.

"SEQ541 is a MIDI pattern sequencer for OS X. The program is extremely flexible, all it requires is that you have an external MIDI device generating a clock and it will output notes in time to a pattern sequence you specify. Why is SEQ541 for you?

* I wrote this program because I wanted a way to control my Roland SH-32 synthesizer (which does not have a built-in sequencer) in time with my Korg ER-1 Rhythm synthesizer (which does have a built-in sequencer). It works pretty damn well for this purpose, especially live, where I would rather be playing pre-programmed melodies and basslines and tweak the knobs in real-time.
* If a full-blown sequencer is too much software for your music, then pattern based music programming might be the way to go. My musical background all started with MOD files, so I've never really let go of the pattern paradigm for music composition. SEQ541 is a great tool for doing pattern based composition with your MIDI gear.
* If you have a MIDI synth with a built-in sequencer, you can use SEQ541 to visually edit sequences for the device, then play then back into the device while it's recording. I use SEQ541 to do this with my Korg EA-1.
* If you're a software synth person, SEQ541 works really well for controlling software synths like Native Instruments Absynth or Waldorf A-1 in time with your external MIDI hardware.

If you have a hardware (or software) synth that you wish you could control using patterns, this is your program!

If enough interest (read: cash) is generated for this program there are a lot more features I would like to add, but for now, it does everything I need for my music. :-)
features (limitations?)

* you can't record patterns, only input them via mouse
* 128-note polyphony
* you can run as many pattern sequencers simultaneously as your CPU can handle
* you can store as many patterns as you want per sequencer
* while playing, transitions to the next pattern don't occur until the current pattern is done playing
* variable pattern length: 16, 32, 48 and 64 notes
* variable note length: 16th note through whole note in 16th note steps
* fixed note-on velocity 0x64
* play/stop must be driven from an external MIDI source
* MIDI clock must be from an external MIDI source
* can drive any hardware or software MIDI device
* can echo MIDI clock to the external MIDI device (for arpegio or whatever)"

Gestures Gear VBlog: Roland Juno-106 and Sequential Circuits Prophet 600 Duet

YouTube via AccumulatedGestures | January 29, 2011 |

"Casey plays a quick jam on the Juno-106 and Prophet 600, recorded into Cubase with no EQ or effects. The first half is played with the Juno providing chords and the Prophet providing the lead, before Casey swaps over for the second half.

There is a lot of talk about the slow envelopes of the Prophet 600 but I haven't seen many clips on Youtube really show what it sounds like when in action. Mostly, its flattering strings/pad synth videos that sound incredible. In truth, the envelopes are not a problem for a lot of sounds and it really does sound AMAZING as a string synth, but there are some sounds that are problematic for the software envelopes.

When Casey is soloing on the Prophet, the slows envelopes sound fine and the Prophet VCO sound really cuts through as a nice lead compared to the mellower Juno. However, once Casey switches over to comping on the Prophet the lag of the envelopes becomes quite obvious and distracting. Clearly not a job the Prophet will be filling in our music.

More videos of the Prophet and the Juno are to come. Apologies for the shallow depth of field - still getting used to filming with a Canon 5D.

About us:
The Accumulated Gestures are an 8-piece neo-soul/funk band from Perth, Western Australia. With lead vocalist/producer Donovan de Souza being an avid collector of synthesizers and vintage keyboards as well as a current move towards incorporating more synthesizers in our band sound, our Gear VBlog aims to show the strengths and limitations of synth interfaces, synthesizers and other musical gear. The kind of videos Donovan would have liked to see when he was buying electronic gear in the first place."

Module #4 - Magnus Danielson sawtooth phase shifter

YouTube via Gameboygenius | January 29, 2011 |

"(Bad) schematic and theory of operation: http://home.swipnet.se/cfmd/synths/sc...

The original sawtooth frequency doubler ("octave shifter") works by "cutting the sawtooth in two", to double its frequency. The phase shifter lets you modulate where the wave is "cut", in other words, it allows to shift the phase of the wave. Instant fattification!
Of course, this module can be abused, just like any other module."

Grid Music for iPad — composition basics & Excerpt of "In C"

"Grid Music is a fun new way to compose music. Construct a miniature music machine on your iPad!

** See Grid Music in action: watch the video demo at http://gridmusicapp.com **

- Simple to use: just tap cells to change what they do, and swipe between them to connect them together. Cells can send "charges" out into the grid like an electronic circuit, play notes when charges touch them, or change the kind of sound Grid Music plays.

- Performance and composition in one tool: modify your composition as it plays, and switch parts of it on and off in real time by connecting and disconnecting.

- Embrace randomness: give charges a choice and they choose by chance, allowing you to create an ever-shifting non-deterministic composition.

- Save and recall your compositions: bookmark your favorites and return at any time. Everything is saved, including the position of charges on the grid."

M-Audio VENOM mapped to an Ozonic via MIDI CC.mov

YouTube via rudiedisone | January 22, 2011 |

"I wanted to try out my new M-Audio Venom synth with an external knob controller, so I hooked it up to my old school M-Audo Ozonic via MIDI , mapped out 16 CCs to the knobs and sliders (ADSR on the sliders, cutoff, resonance, ocillator pitch etc on the knobs), and it worked great!

After tweaking around with that for a bit , I recorded some basslines right from the phrase sequencer in Venom into Ableton Live while tweaking them in real time. Then I added some drumloops, and a synth accent from Ableton's Operator FM synth, which actually is the only MIDI sequenced part here.
Here's what I came up with.

P.S.-I am really digging this Venom! It's a pretty inspiring piece of kit, has killer sounds and the audio interface works great with Ableton. Next vid, I'll try some stuff with the audio inputs."
