Hollow Sun Hohner Organa and Oscillosine Product Pages Now Live

The product page for Oscillosine, first posted here, is now live. You'll find an additional sample and more info. Regarding the image immediately to the left: "The samples for Oscillosine are taken from a vintage tube Hewlett Packard sine wave test oscillator estimated to date back to the 50s or 60s, maybe earlier."

On Organa:
"Little is known about the Hohner Organa other than it was an electric reed organ from the 50s/early 60s with a fan that blew air through reeds that were opened and closed with the keys. In many ways, it's like an electric harmonium where a motor rather than manually pumped pedals pushes the air around.

It has a distinctive sound which is harmonically rich and somewhat 'wheezy'. It certainly has 'character'. It is only capable of a few basic tones but Hollow Sun's 'Organa' takes this a stage further by making them available simultaneously and mixable using drawbars which allow a far greater range of sounds to be created than the original is capable of. The phase innacuracies of the layers add to the overall richness of the sound when the various 'ranks' are combined."

Organa is available on the Hollow Sun website here.

Electrische piano: Trautonium (1941)

YouTube via BeeldenGeluid | Oct 16, 2010 |

"In Den Haag wordt door Oskar Sala een demonstratie gegeven van de klanken van een nieuw elektronisch muziekinstrument, de Trautonium. De speeltafel van dit instrument is vergelijkbaar met die van een pijporgel. Het heeft twee 'manualen' die met de vingers worden bespeeld. De normale configuratie van zwarte en witte toetsen ontbreekt echter. De Duitser Zaun geeft een toelichting. Sala speelt op het instrument een stukje muziek en wordt daarbij begeleid door een pianist.

NEW APPS AND ADDED FEATURES KEEP LINE 6 MIDI MOBILIZER AHEAD OF THE CURVE

"— New software development kit helps over 90 developers produce a wide variety of apps for MIDI Mobilizer™, the only MIDI interface for all Apple® iOS devices—

CALABASAS, Calif.—February 18, 2011—Line 6, Inc. (line6.com), the industry leader in digital modeling technology for music-creation products, has added new features and an updated SDK (software development kit) enabling key new features for the growing MIDI Mobilizer™ third party app developer community. MIDI Mobilizer is the only MIDI interface that can turn all models of iPhone®, iPad®, and iPod touch® into complete music production studios with the help of a parade of exciting third party software applications continually debuting on the App StoreSM.

“The SDK and firmware updates have inspired more than 90 software developers worldwide whose inventive apps are really demonstrating the full potential of MIDI Mobilizer,” remarked Chris Grigg, mobile products manager at Line 6. “Musicians of all kinds are now taking advantage of its enormous creative and practical uses.”

The SDK supports MIDI System Real Time messages such as MIDI Clock, which allows an app to sync to an external hardware drum machine or a sequencer running on a computer -- or vice versa, the drumbox or sequencer can sync to the app.

Available apps include MIDI control surfaces, synths, sequencers and complete music production software as well as DMX lighting control software and more. Recent additions include NLogSynth Pro with 126 synth sounds, StepPolyArp which is a step MIDI arpeggiator, NanoStudio which is a virtual recording studio and many more. All of these apps are available today on the App Store with more arriving all the time.

MIDI Mobilizer remains the best way for working musicians to leave the computer at home. It's powered by the iPod touch, iPhone or iPad, so no bulky "wall wart" power supply is needed. Great apps allow users to manage all sounds, sequences and other MIDI data right on the iPod touch, iPhone or iPad.

In addition to being first to the market and easiest to use, MIDI Mobilizer also has the distinction of being the least expensive. Consumers will be able to find the $99.99 suggested retail unit hitting the streets and web for around $69.99*.

SimpleMidiPad & More

via Analog Industries where you'll find the full post. The interesting bit:

On the surface it's a simple MIDI pad controller for the iPad. There are a number of apps that can do this, but...

"Assuming it is approved and those of you that try it provide some good feedback, I'll adjust the framework accordingly and bang out a couple of the other simple ideas I have. Then we'll give porting the Axon sequencer a whirl, which is necessarily a much more involved process. If you have a request for a specific MIDI generator for the iPad, now is the time to bring it up."

Now an Axon sequencer on the iPad, well, that would be very, very cool. Until then, any simple sequencing features would be more than welcome.

New iPad gets announced tomorrow BTW. It will be interesting to see if it has an impact on the used market for soon to be last gen iPads.

The vOICe - Video to Audio - Seeing With Sound

Brian writes in with the following:
"I came across this program while searching for a PC version of Metasynth. It can use either live video or a picture and converts it to sound. Lots of experimental stuff too - using the mouse position as input, sonifying a URL (?!), and much more. Very cool!...

It actually uses images (either video or still pictures) to generate sound. I've attached an AVI illustrating what was generated from a wolf picture. You can apply a filter for what colors to use - kind of a spectrogram ran backwards. Speaking of, I attached another AVI illustrating what a spectorgram (made in Audacity) of me saying "funky town" sounds like after running it through vOICe. There's even a mode for entrainment of brain waves (must register to use that mode)!" Videos below.

via http://www.seeingwithsound.com/
"The vOICe vision technology for the totally blind offers the experience of live camera views through sophisticated image-to-sound renderings. In theory this use of digital senses could lead to synthetic vision with truly visual sensations ("qualia") through crossmodal sensory integration, by exploiting the existing multisensory processing and neural plasticity of the human brain through training and education. The vOICe implements a form of sensory substitution where the goal is to bind visual input to visual qualia with a minimum of training time and effort, and improve quality of life (QoL) for blind users."

Update via Brian in the comments: "I tried to sonify the Matrixsynth page URL, but I got an error of "Too many links" :)"

BUGBRAND Weevil08 synth oscillator touch

via this auction

Description via BugBrand where you'll find samples.

"Released Feb08
Here's the new Weevil08 - three lo-fi oscillators quasi-ringmodulated together, with PowerStarve, Filter, 9-point-TouchPlate and internal MiniAmp.

While the core Weevil circuitry is similar to the Postcard, the sonic results are quite different - for one, each Osc has a range switch for Hi tones or Lo clickety, and the output levels are much more stable due to a comparator circuit (don't worry - there's still loads of chaos within!). The combination of PowerStarve and responsive TouchPlate opens up a vast array of sounds that are played in a way unlike any other instrument. The internal MiniAmp is now a standard feature and gives a pretty different tone/response from the output jack. Plugging in a jack conveniently disconnects the internal MiniAmp.

This is a newly standardised version built with pro-PCBs for improved feel and replicatability, available in Green or Red with chunky knobs in a sprayed plastic case and running off a single 9V battery.

You can check the block diagram for details of the internal arrangement, but it may be best just to listen to the mp3 demo (11MB) that wobbles through some of the wide-ranging sounds available!"

BUGBRAND Micro BugCrusher

via this auction
Description via BugBrand where you'll find samples.
"The BugCrusher effect comes from using a Sample & Hold circuit clocked at audio rates - this Sample Rate Reduction is an analogue process and should not be confused with BitCrushing [most BitCrush plugins will have Sample Rate and Bit Depth controls]. Rate Reduction sounds somewhat like RingModulation, but tends to appear more musical - at high frequencies you get a fizzle to the sound while maintaining most of the original audio, and at low frequencies any high notes will seem to wrap-around and the overall sound is much more chaotic. You could read about Aliasing and Nyquist for further technical details.

The Micro or μCrusher features two simple controls, one to set the Sample Rate and one to Blend between the Dry and Effected signals.

There is a button to Engage/Bypass the effect with a status LED. As the case and switch are not designed to be stompable, an external footswitch can be attached via the front jack socket. This should be a simple momentary switch such as keyboard sustain pedal. Switching is achieved electronically and is noiseless - the effect is not true-bypass and audio always passes through an input buffer amplifier even when bypassed. The devices has a unity gain structure and applies no amplification to signals.

The Micro is happy with instrument or line input signals. Input and Output connections are on the rear with standard Mono 1/4" Jack Sockets - note that Mono cables should always be used as inserting a jack plug into the Input socket serves to apply power to the unit in typical stompbox manner.

Power is supplied on a standard external 'Boss-type' 9V Regulated DC Supply with 2.1mm centre-negative barrel plug. A simple battery connector is also supplied with each unit. Max. power consumption is 10mA and the device is polarity and over-current protected.

The MicroCrusher features PCB material panel and end-cheeks and is enclosed in a metal case measuring 12 x 8 x 4.5 cm. Some of the metal cases come in black dependent on supply. Each device comes in a stamped cardboard box with instruction sheet. The Micro is covered by a 1 year parts & workmanship guarantee."
