Puremagnetik - Subscriptions for Donations / SXSW4Japan

via Micah Frank:
"Puremagnetik has launched a fundraising page on the SXSW4Japan site: http://sxsw4japan.org/puremagnetik

We are matching $30 and $60 donations with their value in Puremagnetik subscriptions. 100% of all donations go to the American Red Cross. Our modest goal is $1400 but I hope we have to extend it. There are only 2.5 days left so I am wanting to make it a short and powerful push.

Although IMO a little late, I'm glad we were able to get this organized this evening. Please spread the word if you can.

All the best,

Micah

Conny Plank Studio original Oscar Synthesizer

"this is the original Oscar Synthesizer of Conny Plank from his studio ! The Studio closed in 2006 and we sell all the remaining items, have look at our other auctions ! This Oscar works perfect and has been serviced by our technician 8 weeks ago including a new memory battery. It has an early Midi Version (dont know which one...) This Synthesizer has been used at a lot of Connys productions in the early 80s. One key has a cigarette burning spot, the rest looks good but of course not new."

"This is pretty similar in sound to a Roland Jupiter 4 minus two oscillators and the polyphony. It has 8 user programmable patches, a great sounding filter and great envelopes."

Oberheim 2-Voice

via this auction

"It has an internal modification that allows both SEMs to be controlled at the same time. Basically, the CV and Gate Inputs control both SEMs rather than just one. There's really nothing like it's multimode filter layered with another. Both SEMs have another "reversible" mod that gives them a faster LFO. The stock LFO speed was pretty low. These LFOs get fast! Think frequency modulation! Lastly, it has blue LEDs. Yippy!
All these mods are completely reversible and nothing was done to jeopardize the originality of the instrument."

"Here's one you don't see too often. A rare Synton Fenix--- 1 of 75 made. It has just come back from being serviced and needs nothing. It's in beautiful cosmetic condition with only a few small scratches (very hard to see.) As you may know, Synton made a small number of these back in 1997 through 2000. Too bad they stopped! This thing is unique with it's 3 VCOs, 3 VCFs, 3 EGs, 3 LFOs, 4 VCAs, etc. It will come with the power supply, original manuals and some banana patch cords."

Firstmans on eBay - not seeing it listed at the time of this post.
"I am posting this video of a nicely preserved Multivox SQ-1 Firstman that worked very well when I bought it years ago but now all it makes are weird pitched sounds best described by recording them and making them available in this video.

Some of the lights still come on but there is no sound.

I was going to try and have it fixed but I am running out of money so it's on eBay now.

Maybe someone else can get it fixed and restore it back to its former self.

This video is not for entertainment value but to demonstrate the condition of this piece to potential buyers.

When it works this synth have a truly bad-ass Acid sound, like a TB-303. There are videos form other users on Youtube to back this up.

Those who have already owned or heard one of these know that what I am saying is true."

Richard Hoadley - Gaggle, Generative Sound Interface 2010

YouTube Uploaded by MediaArtTube on Mar 16, 2011

"The Gaggle prototype has been imagined, designed and developed in order to experiment personally with such interfaces, and primarily with the link between sensor (in this case 'pings'), physical computing board (in this case Arduino) and SuperCollider audio language.
Gaggle provides an opportunity to investigate performance using Gaggle, including questions such as: * Does the number of sensors affect the nature of the interface? Does increasing the number of sensors to a point where they are difficult to control consciously affect performativity? * Does the relative position of the sensors affect the result. In particular these ultrasound sensors can interfere with each other, especially when designing for movement such as that created by dancers. * How does the type of movement to be used with the interface affect the use and design of the interface? For instance, in this case, how is the direction of the sensors affected and what difference does this make? * Interplay between physical implementation and software algorithms: for instance, does the physical nature of the interface need to be reflected in its performance results. Of course all the usual issues concerning algorithmic composition and structuring arise at this point.

Electric Independence: Ulrich Schnauss

via motherboard.tv

"When post-shoegaze magician – the peerless electronic wunderkind – Ulrich Schnauss invited us to his apartment in London, he specified it would have to be at night due to his predilection for ‘nocturnal’ activities.

We thought that seemed mostly normal for a musician until he came to the door (clad in leather jeans) and dragged us up to his pitch-black attic.

Thankfully all of our Warhol-period Udo Kier fantasy/nightmares were unwarranted the moment we walked into his studio: an impressive collection of synthesizers and effects units used to layer hundreds of manipulated sounds and craft some of the most breathtaking, bombastic records released in recent years.

Ulrich was kind enough to show us some of his favorite instruments and demo the tasty tones from his forthcoming album."

Sendai - Improvisation for the japanese people

YouTube Uploaded by TouchedByInspiration on Mar 14, 2011

"I have no words for what happened by the disaster in Japan. Still there are things that even an earthquake or tsunami cannot destroy. My improvisation tells about these things that one can rediscover in all the destruction: hope, confidence, faith, courage, compassion and friendship. My wish to the japanese people is to find what cannot be destroyed...
(The recording is played live and spontanously on march 13nd 2011 by Christiane Dehmer, piano and synthesizer.)

#3: The bluebox synthesizer. Interconnection with a MIDI controller

YouTube Uploaded by dd49ll on Mar 15, 2011

"The bluebox is a stand alone instrument by it's own. But the possibilities with the bluebox comes in many flavors, as it has MIDI-in and MIDI-out capabilities. Play on it with your master keyboard. Let it control your favorite synthesizer. Connect your bluebox to a MIDI-controller and get as many knobs as you want. Record you sounds and notes in your sequencer. And let your sequencer play your favorite basslines with glide and accent on the bluebox. Only your imagination will expand it's possibilities to the fullest.

The breakout cable is a accessory to also get a MIDI-out port on your bluebox synthesizer. With this the bluebox can send program change, notes, modulation wheel, CC messages, dump sound patches to save in your MIDI files, and much more.

"This demo i made with Yamaha PSR-36 Keyboard. Build +/- 1988.
It brings 4-OP FM synthesis with 5 parameters for editing the synthesizer engine. And there are also 25 drum samples in poor and shortened quality. There are no filters, no unisono and no effects, but the stereo synthesizer make it little bit width. PSR-36 includes a simply chord- and custom drummer-sequencer and a usually drum computer for entertainer with a lot of variations.

In first step you listen a simply demo in usually quality. Later follows a demo with 16 instruments made in PSR-36. I only recording this sounds pure out of the keyboard and arranged in Logic to a demosong. No help with external Eqs, Filters, or any other Fx. ... this mean pure.

There is more possible than this little beating demo i made. Enjoy :)

YouTube Uploaded by attorks on Mar 16, 2011

"This short video I made last Monday evening (or actually night). I wanted to capture the moment but afterward I noticed the video is somewhat dark.
It begins with an intro played on the Waldorf Q Keyboard with a harp-like sound. After that the three sequences are started. The distinct distorted sound comes from the Synthesizers.com Modular through the Doepfer A-189-1 Voltage Controlled Bit Modifier. This Modular performs two 8-step sequences I alternate manually. The self-built Modular does a 6-step sequence with randomized steps. The Ian Fritz Teezer Through-Zero VCO together with the Blacet Miniwave does an 8-step sequence. The Mellotron strings and choir sound is played on the Roland XP-80 and the bass on the Clavia Nord Lead 1. From 2:23 on a strings sound is played on the Waldorf Q Keyboard and I must admit I overdubbed that strings section with another strings sound of the Q Keyboard afterwards because it sounded very thin.

You can download/see/hear the video and music from my website soon."
