dubstep bass with triggered kick [1]

YouTube Uploaded by 87bpm on Jan 12, 2011

See this post for what a Coron DS-8 looks like.

"Oli Rubow demonstrates how to realize the typical dubstep bass (wobble bass) on a triggered acoustic kick drum.
An analogue drum synth (Coron DS-8) is hooked on the kick drum, goes through the Vermona Filter DAF-1 (low-pass filter modulated with lfo), finally through a Boss DD-20 delay.

To make the groove vivid he also adds delays and reverb-shots to the snare/hihat mic signal (with Boss VE-20, Re-20) and is turning those knobs:
@Vermona: Cutoff, LFO Speed, LFO Intensity, E.V. Intensity
@Coron: Sweep, Mode and Intensity-switch

PS. Other electronics in this video: snare mic is gained (and reverved) with a Boss VE-20 preamp, and delayed by a Boss RE-20 echo machine.

"The Greenotronic Cacophonetic Heterodyne Space Explorer... This is my 3rd DIY 'synth-a-like' after 2 Atari Punks... I based this unit on a combination of schematics I found online, with the basic idea coming from Beavis Audio Research's Heterodyne Space Explorer. I added a dual LFO inspired by the Cacophonator, and a resonant filter as found on the Weird Sound Generator. I also added an extra set of SPDT switches (white capped deals near the top of the faceplate) which alter the octave of the oscillators (capacitor choice really). Not so visible are LEDs I wired inline with the outputs of each oscillator. The second generation of this beast is already under construction... mwuhahahahaaaaa"

"Here's a modular Univox SR-55, AKA Korg Mini pops 3. I've removed it from it's odd-shaped case and reworked the circuitry to fit into my second modular synth cabinet. The pattern producing circuitry has been removed, as the drum machine has been fitted with proper trigger inputs.

Each trigger input uses a simple op-amp inverter to produce the negative polarity triggers this machine requires. By varying the pulse width of the trigger, different sounds can be produced.

This sequence is produced by a clock divider, as well as a sample and hold circuit.

M-Audio Venom Review and Interview with Product Manager Taiho Yamada

A quick note: This review is long. You can jump to sections that interest you vs. reading it straight through if you prefer. This review focuses primarily on the synth engine for one single patch on the Venom. The Venom supports Multi mode with up to four multitimbral parts. Not only can you layer sound programs but you can set global parameters for the set. Be sure to see the Multi mode section of "Tips and Tricks via Taiho Yamada" at the end of this post. Taiho is the Lead Project Manager of the Venom and served as my contact during the review. I want to thank Taiho for his help and enthusiastic generosity. He is a true synthesist and the Venom is his baby.

Synth connections: Taiho previously worked at Alesis on the Andromeda A6. The DSP developer of the Venom worked on Radikal Technologies' Spectralis and the Accelerator. People that contributed to the presets via sound design include Richard Devine, Francis Preve, Mark Ovenden (Avid's AIR Instruments, ProTools VIs), Joerg Huettner (Waldorf, Access, Alesis), and of course Taiho Yamada.

*Don't miss the "Q&A with Taiho" section towards the end of the review. Also keep an eye out for "Taiho's Tips and Tricks" throughout the review in grey. You can find the consolidated list below the Q&A section.

Ziggybox - Ashtray Synthesizer

Ziggybox from Christian Losert on Vimeo.

"Ziggybox,
by Christian Losert and Paul Schengber

At first glance, Ziggybox looks like an everyday item for smokers, which one could easily find in a living room. However, it is a synthesizer that generates and modulates sounds by placing cigarettes in the notch of an ashtray or by opening a box of cigarettes.
Through simple handling and without any prior knowledge of sound synthesis, Ziggybox enables the user to produce complex levels of synthesized music.
The aim of this project is to enable access and control of a complex, digital environment, which is not usually transparent and under-standable for the common visitor. Our intention is to show that it is possible to conceptualize the creative utilisation of computer software in a casual way, by an interface, which initially seems to be unsophisticated in its manipulation. With this, the user is able to easily approach and control the system functionality of Ziggybox.
As the use of everyday objects are familiar to all, the interface serves as an open and easily approachable invitation for use. With this type of interface, where digital and physical boarders are blurred, it helps to open up a new relationship between technology and humans.
The project utilised C++ and Open Frameworks as the basic platform. The characteristics of the sounds are changed by frequency and amplitude modulation, while the light-sensors control the sound synthesis. Our intention is also to give
the colour arrangement a special importance and the objects on the box are arranged in order to reinforce the possibility of interaction with common objects.

"I was litteraly blowned away by this pedal. Probably the best Muff type fuzz I ever played in this price category, and it kills pedals that cost much much more.

Two things that makes it stand out

-the TONE OMG THE TONE. Seriously, it just sounds right, listen to the demo and hear what a Muff should always be.

It has some features that are so useful and yet quite rare : -two different input gain to chose from (upper switch) so you can set it differently depending on which pickups you have on your guitar or if you're stacking it with a boost, line driver, OD or whatever.
-Two tone controls who both have a 100% usable range of frequences
- A switchable second set of diodes (bottom switch) that will change the clipping stage and give you access to other well known Muff tones, it's really like having two pedals in one.

The video was recorded with a US Telecaster Deluxe going into a Fender Twin preset I made on a AXE FX Standard. Recorded with a RME Fireface 400.

Early experiments: encoding images with sound

YouTube Uploaded by ScrollingMusic on Mar 23, 2011

"The predecessor to our MATLAB synthesizer is a function we call RevSpectrogram, which interprets an image of any size as a spectrogram of a sound, and creates the sound based on the intensity of the pixels in the image. When the sound is visualized, the spectrogram image obtained retains much of the properties of the original image.

We encoded four sample pictures with RevSpectrogram:
1. An improvised picture with white lines
2. Picture of a gull (taken by Andy Wang)
3. "Earthrise", taken by William Anders in 1968 during the Apollo 8 mission to the moon
4. A Windows glass desktop background

The reverse spectrogram interpolates each pixel to a linearly-spaced frequency index. The frequent clicks you hear prevalently are a result of the linearly-spaced sine waves matching up every 1/20th of a second."

Yamaha VL-1 Version 2 Synthesizer

via this auction

"Yamaha VL-1 physical modelling synth with the sought after version 2 firmware update. As Yammys go, it's a super rare peach of a thing and probably the best looking synth they made since the DX1. Even the floppies have faux mahogany stickers! VL's don't come up very often and VL-1's even less so.

[the following appears to have come from enlightenedsystems.com]
New VL synths are equipped with the Version 2 firmware and voices, although Version 1 voice disks can be obtained and used. Beware, though, since a dealer may have a VL synth that sat on the shelf and has not been upgraded to Version 2. For those who own a Version 1 VL1, a very strong case can be made for upgrading to Version 2. To wit:

* Quite a few of the voices have been improved. Notable improvements have been made, for example, in the trumpet, ethnic guitar, tenor sax, and recorder voices. This involves improved voicing and new elements, not just parameter tweaks. A number of the more odious Version 1 elements no longer exist.
* The new Excitation model (decay from pulse excitation) can be used in editing, and the new ethnic guitar voices, for example, use it.
* The new Modulation Effects in Version 2 are Chorus, Phaser, Symphonic, Celeste, Distortion + Flanger, and Distortion + Wah. As with the Reverb effects, all of these effects are well done. The Chorus effect will find a lot of use, and I particularly like the Phaser, Symphonic, and Celeste effects. With the Phaser you can, for example, set the Feedback Gain and Wet/Dry Balance down from their wild levels to something in the range of 35% each to get an interesting evolving timbre change during held notes. The Distortion effects are probably aimed at the guitar voices, but could be used on others, if you like that sort of thing.

* New parameters and extended or finer-grained parameter settings are available in Version 2 on almost all editing screens.
* Version 2 allows keyboard splits with different elements for each hand. They have a dynamic way of implementing the split that follows your hand, without using a fixed split point.
* Ver 2 brings a bunch of new breath noise types that are easy to select to get just the right breath noise for your favorite voice. Note that these breath noises are not just attack chiff, but are modeled according to the actual sound of a real musical instrument, so they may show up during sustain or decay, they may vary with breath pressure, may combine with pitch components (e.g. sax, flute, clarinet), and so on. This is not chump chiff!

* The Mixing screen (the heart of the resonant model) has two new types of tap settings.
* 30 new microtunings have been added, including Scottish highland bagpipe tuning, various Arabic tunings, Phrygian, Thai, African, etc."

Siel Cruise Synthesiser

YouTube Uploaded by nounandnumber on Mar 18, 2011

via this auction
"This is the Siel Cruise I have for sale on eBay. It is from around 1981-1986 and is a combination of the Siel Mono and the Orchestra 2.

The video is an example of the sounds it can make, rather than me playing it, so it is more for information than entertainment.

A Siel Orchestra was the source of the lovely keyboard on The Rip by Portishead, which can be heard on the polysynth piano preset of the Cruise. It may be battered, but it is still capable of some good sounds, especially the strings which sound great.

This video will be removed upon sale of the synth. Hopefully Adrian Utley nor Sonicstate.com mind having their interview footage included, but I will remove it at their request."

Also
"I would like to know though if my comparisons to the Siel Orchestra 2 are valid. I was always under the impression that the Cruise is a Mono & Orchestra in one box, with some extras, such as the EQ, missing. Any opinions would be appreciated."

And some interesting bits from the auction (as always be sure to read the full description at the auction if you intend to bid):
"Siel were an Italian company in the eighties, and from what little information I can find about it, the Cruise appears to be a union of the Siel Mono and the Siel Orchestra II. Plenty of specific information can be found here but some of the interesting features I want to point out are: the full polyphony on the poly section, the mono and poly sections can be played in unison and there is an option for a keyboard split as well, and the outputs include a mono+poly and poly only output. The LFO on the mono section is a little unusual in that it works after a short delay (this is by design, I should add).

I have assembled a little audio slideshow of what it is capable of with a whole host of pictures of the actual synth for sale on You Tube. There should also be a list of suggestions by You Tube of the few other videos demonstrating this synth which may be worth your time...

Now for the modification. At the same time as I bought the synth I was doing a lot of circuit bending and decided to tentatively explore the possibilities on the mono section. This was a bit foolish as a) it was on something running on mains power and b) was on something I could not afford to loose (I broke a Yamaha CS01 circuit bending. It still smarts). Fortunately nothing untoward happened and the result is a simple bypass of the Rd125 resistor that gives an harmonic distortion to the monosynth with no ill effects to the rest. Again, all this can be seen and heard on the video.

What really pleased me though was discovering, in an interview with Adrian Utley from Portishead that some of my favourite sounds from Third (mainly the great arpeggio at the end of The Rip) came from a Siel Orchestra (see above) which can be heard in the piano preset of the Cruise. However the cruise does lack the Orchestra's EQ so it isn't an exact likeness, and I expect the drive in production of the synth was for 'cleaner' sounds, which does give it a richer string sound as it is it a more recent synth. Still it is nice for a relatively obscure synth to get some love, rather than the usual Moog, EMS suspects, but that is probably because I cannot afford them..."
