Ionic Performer Restoration - Rare Commercial EMS SYNTHI Clone

Ionic Performer for Matrix site
flickr set by Ramcur

via doktorfuture

"Ramcur is repairing my Ionic Performer. He's doing a great job, including acid-baths, ultrasonic cleaning, lubrication and rebuilding of pots, re-capping it all, etc...

I recommend him highly for synth repairs."

For those not familiar with the Ionic Performer, it was an EMS SYNTHI clone released by Ionic with a very interesting history. See this post and the Ionic label below for more. At the bottom you will find this post from way back in 2005 with a VST of the Performer.

For people following the site for some time, you might remember doktorfuture's Ionic Performer from this post back in August of 2006.

ROCK SCHOOL Series 2

You might want to bookmark this one to come back to as you have time. I have posted videos from the Rock School series in the past, but this is currently the most comprehensive set if not the complete series - eight episodes broken up into twenty four videos. I opted to create eight playlists for the eight episodes so you can read the description for each under each set of three videos. This one in via willy who sent in Series 2 - Episode 5 (part 3 of 3) with Bill Bruford explaining his simmons drums. I figured I'd put the whole series up. Videos below.

"Taking over from where the first series left off, the second set of ROCKSCHOOL television programs focuses its attention on new technology and its implications for the musicians of the day.

Synthesisers, samplers, sequencers and drum machines are all covered, as are electronic drum systems, computer hardware and software (remember this is 1987 - so this is for retro-heads only) and synthesisers for guitar and bass. There are also tips on how to make the most of the human voice, and on songwriting and arrangement.

This series was shown on TV in the UK during 1987.

Beat707 New V1.2.0 Update

YouTube Uploaded by beat707videos on Apr 6, 2011

"This is the new V1.2.0 for Beat707 - Here I'm doing a quick check on Mirroring Pattern Edit with 64 steps. (32 x 1/16 and 32 x 1/32)

www.Beat707.com

An Arduino Shield.

Here's the complete list of changes for V1.2.0 as of April 06 2011

- This version uses Song Format 2, therefore is not compatible with previous Songs.
- Double Pattern Size: each pattern now holds 64 steps, instead of the 32 previous mode.
- Each pattern now has an A and B set of steps, each has 32 steps for a total of 64 steps.
- The Copy/Paste pattern area is now saved on the EEPROM. So you can copy a pattern from one song and past into another song's pattern.
- Improved the LCD code by reducing the LiquidCrystal library and creating the WLCD library on its place.
- Improved MIDI Clock by using the 16-bit Timer1 (before was 8-bit Timer2)
- BPM Range now goes from 25 to 255 BPM
- Added special Pattern Mirror Mode Editing (slow double click Shift or use the menu navigation)
- Added Midi Clock Shuffle (0 to 6)
- Added option to edit patterns from the Song mode. Just hit Record and it will go directly to the Pattern that is playing, hit Left+Right to go back to Song mode.
- When Playing in Song Mode, now you can go up and down Song Positions. (before you could only edit BPM)
- Added Left+Right key shortcut: cycles all 3 modes: Pattern, Song and File.
- Holding shift and Hiting Record will make the Shift key "stick". Release Shift and hit Record again to "un-stick" the Shift key.
- Quick Shift Click still goes from 1/16 to 1/32 step editing. (or 1/32 to 1/64 in double speed) But now, you don't see a message, just a small icon change next to the pattern number, where now shows A/B. A small square above A/B tells you are in double step editing mode.
- Better code for less Flash space even with the latest additions."

To the unfamiliar, "crowdsourced" means that the content that is the most popular "rises to the top" via votes--as in, the crowd chooses what's the most relevant. Threadless is a good example: only the designs that are voted hottest actually make it to production.

Electronic music fans and supporters were asked to vote on a number of submissions from Chicago artists to determine the lineup for a night of entertainment at the Empty Bottle. Approximately 600 online-votes later, the results were in, and the top four acts were picked, and will perform in order of the number of votes received.

TRANSISTOR presents experimental circuit bent performers Tim Kaiser and Roth Mobot. According to Art Tape, "Tim Kaiser not only creates compelling musical soundscapes, but he does it all with instruments he has built -- truly hand-made music for the atmospheric aficionado." Says Kaiser, “My music is atmospheric; I’m not as concerned with melody or rhythm as I am with texture and feeling… …perhaps I’m creating a kind of folk music from the future.” (Source: Theatre Intangible interview with Tim Kaiser). More of Tim's work at www.TimKaiser.org.

Roth Mobot's Patrick McCarthy and Tommy Stephenson have been transforming music composition from an activity of composition and "correct duplication" to exploration and "sonic discovery" with their strategically improvised "recursive jazz" performed on home made experimental and circuit bent devices since 2005. Rare Roland System 100m 172 Phaser / Chorus

via this auction
"The phase shifter and audio delay can be used for producing spatial effects. Both include convenient effect ON/OFF switches.
Both can be controlled from an external control voltage source so that two units may be used together for stereo effects, or may be used as a part of the sound synthesis process itself. The built-in control LFO has both normal and inverted outputs. The gate delay can be used where it is desirable to provide a delayed output from a pulse source, or it can be used as a pulse shaper. The gate delay also has a built-in high gain amplifier with a THRESHOLD control so that low level pulses recorded on tape can be amplified and shaped into a form which will trigger synthesizer functions."

Synthesizers.com Q116 Ring Modulator

via this auction
"This module was tested at the factory on 12/13/2010, so it's still fairly new. It has been used gently and only in a smoke-free studio, so it's in perfect condition.

The Q116 Ring Modulator performs a variation of amplitude modulation in which two input signals are multiplied creating an output that contains the sum and difference of the input signals (called sidebands), but without the original input signals themselves. The result is a very strange clanging, bell-like sound that can only be created with a ring modulator. Useful for producing gong sounds, bell sounds, and many strange sounds having no description. Sometimes referred to as a 'Balanced Modulator'.

Specifications
Panel Size: Single width 2.125"w x 8.75"h.
Signal Levels: 10V PP maximum
Power: +15V@30ma, -15V@30ma
Usage and Patch Tips

Basics
Simply put, the Ring Modulator makes strange sounds by combining two signals. A simple patch would include an oscillator driven by the keyboard into the X input, and another manually controlled oscillator into the Y input, then patch the output to an amplifier which is driven by an envelope generator. The result will be a bell-like sound."

MVIP with modulated oscillator and VCA

YouTube Uploaded by DaveJonesVideo on Apr 6, 2011

"MVIP (mini Video Image Processor) Euro module controlled by an AFG oscillator. The oscillator goes through a VCA to show the MVIP settings with and without the oscillator. The sound is a ring mod of the AFG and another oscillator modulated by the same LFO as the VCA. The AFG is also modulated by an LFO to give it a waving motion.

The first half shows the oscillator in each of the CV inputs. The second half varies the frequency and uses a combination of brightness, bitswap, and mode CVs.

Serge Sonica Keytar Vintage Analog Mini Synthesizer

"super rare 1/600 Sonica Limited Edition Synthesizer made by Frank Eventoff in Los Angeles in the 70's. In excellent condition, although the thin foam membrane covering the speaker has disintegrated and can and should be replaced. There are two small dark streaks on the brass near the half-step button that are minor original blemishes. The case is included as well as the original paperwork. This is a fun little unit for jamming on and is very easy to play. The output jack is a strange 1/8" that I haven't found the exact right plug to fit it. I have just played the internal speaker and recorded to mic.
