Vintage Roland RS-09 Organ/Strings Analog Synthesizer

via this auction

"vintage Roland RS-09 Organ/Strings analog synthesizer. Roland starting making this analog string and organ synthesizer in 1978. This one is one of the first versions, out of three, that Roland made of this model and employs the rockers that , according to some, are much more reliable. The string sound and organ sounds are nice, fatty analog sounds. The organ and string sections can be played simultaneously or individually. It also features an ensemble/chorus effect and external sound input."

4ms Pingable Envelope Generator demo at MusikMesse 2011

YouTube Uploaded by 4mspedals on Apr 23, 2011

"Demonstrating the Pingable Envelope Generator, the newest Eurorack module from 4ms.
The PEG is a dual envelope module, with the unique feature of always synchronizing the envelope lengths to a clock (or a division/multiple of the clock). The envelope curve (lin/log/exp/etc) and skew (rise/fall ratio) can be altered without changing the overall envelope length.

In this patch, the two envelope outputs of the PEG are modulating the FM (pitch) and the Morph Z of an E350 Morphing Terrarium."

"Everything works perfectly and was last serviced 2 years ago at a store in NYC called Dr. Sound. It hasn't seen a lot of use in the last couple of years and never left my recording studio. It has a low serial number which is 0420 and I believe was built in 1975. The synth is 100% analog. Phat bass notes and crazy noises can be created with this Oberheim. It only has one voice so it is monophonic but you can easily buy another voice and pop it in there by just removing the top plate."

Yamaha PSR-4600s on eBay. Update: this one is now listed here (bottom three pics below).
"I plan posting this on eBay very soon, but due to it being a quite an uncommon synth, I felt obligated to upload a video of it making sounds so others can appreciate. I only wish I was a better musician so I could make it really shine .

This is a rare vintage Yamaha PSR keyboard circa 1990. There is very little known about this model, the manual is rather short and took a while to discover some of it's undocumented features. I'm sure there are more mysteries to be solved.

I affectionately call this "The Albatross" because of the odd roll bars and weird pattern sequencer. As you can see, it's covered it buttons and sliders. I love the LED display as well as the printouts on the upper panel.
Physically, the keyboard makes a great controller. The keys are firm, responsive and despite the oddness of the roll bars, they are playable.

Nonetheless, the sounds it produces can be quite good.
At it's heart is a 12bit AWM synth and a 2 operator FM synth. Patches can be edited (slightly) and stored. You can layer sounds and split them. It has MIDI, velocity sensitive keys and digital reverb. Some patches crossfade between AWM and FM tones, like a fixed vector synth. This came out about the same time as the Yamaha TG33.

I could be wrong, but I believe this keyboard was a precursor to the big arranger type keyboards... like the Yamaha Tyros."

Suzuki Portachord Tronichord

via this auction

"Also Known as 'Tronichord' model pc-27

This is the "original" omnichord (well, it was the beginning of the evolution of the omnichord). This is the first of it's kind, and it then led to the future production of the Omnichord which has more features/options.

I sent this to Suzuki to have the power source modified. Being that this is from the late 70's, the battery compartment had a very old terminal for AA batteries. I could barely get today's AA batteries to fit in, and when they did, they were almost impossible to get them back out. The connection was also undependable and the batteries often felt hot. So about a year ago, I sent it to Suzuki and "Franz"(I guess he is known as the omnichord guy) replaced the AA terminal with a 9-volt. This is much more convenient for quickly swapping batteries out if you were to play it on stage. The battery life seems to be unaffected by replacing the AA's with one 9-volt. Franz from Suzuki thought, if anything it might last longer. He tested it for 4 hours and said it still played(battery didn't die)... After being serviced, the battery door hasn't stayed on as well as it used to..."

Waldorf Lector Vocoder, Filter Bank and Synthesizer

"Robot voices, whispering strings, talking drum loops, rhythmic pads, the resonant ringing of bells, dripping water - the possibilities are all but infinite. With a quick tweak here and there, the Lector turns any incoming signal into novel sounds and effects. Tremendously versatile, the Lector puts in your hands a sonic toolset for a wide range of diverse applications. Just about anything goes, from distorting the human voice to adding subtle harmonies to lead vocals and getting creative with movie soundtracks.

The analysis filter bank splits the incoming audio signal into as many as 100 frequency bands, the intensity of which modulates the volume levels of an equal number of band-pass filters in the synthesis filter bank. The integrated 16-voice synthesizer or an external source provides the input signal for the synthesis filter bank. This lets you do fun things like apply a melody line or chord sequence to articulate vocals or speech.

When we set out to develop the Lector, we looked long and hard at what it takes to make a powerful vocoder tick. This why you will find on the ergonomic user interface some special features and unusual parameters that let you tweak even the most minute details. The fabled Waldorf multimode filter with slope of 12dB or 24dB features prominently. You also get a whitening filter that bleaches the signal before it is colored by the vocoder. This comes in very handy when you’re processing choir and voice samples. A three-band equalizer serves to boost and cut whatever frequencies of the generated signal you wish to target.

The integrated 16-voice synthesizer sports two oscillators with quintessential analog waveforms such as sine, triangle, sawtooth, and square with variable pulse width, sample & hold and noise, as well as freely loadable single and multi-samples. FM and ring modulation enrich the vocoder’s signal with further overtone spectra. The Lector also offers a selection of typical effects used to refine vocoder signals - tube overdrive, transistor distortion and hard clipping, six-voice chorus / flanger, synchronizable stereo delay, and realistic reverb."

4ms Pedals VCA Matrix to begin production

via 4ms

"We're starting production of the VCA Matrix!
The first run has a four-color aluminum panel that matches the RCD/SCM clocker suite
Estimated shipping date: May 31st.

Retail price: US$375

Features

The newest Eurorack module from 4ms, the VCA Matrix, is a playable 4x4 matrix of 16 VCAs.

Four CV or audio inputs can be routed in any amount/combination to four outputs, using the 16 CV control jacks, Level knobs, and Mute buttons.

Features:

4 CV/audio inputs and 4 outputs (buffered and dc-coupled)
16 VCA's using high quality SSM chips
Playable surface with 16 latching Mute LED buttons, to mute each VCA individually (mute button disconnects Control jack and Level knob, and silences the VCA)
LED button brightness indicates sum of Control jack, Level knob, and Mute button
16 Control jacks for VCA level control
16 Level knobs attenuate the incoming Control signals. The control jacks are normalled to +5v, so if no control is plugged in, the knobs act as manual level (boost/cut) controls
Matrix Expandability: VCA Matrices can be connected to form a larger matrix using headers on the back (4x8, 8x8, 12x4, etc)
Control Expandability: 16-pin header on back side of PCB allows an external device to control all VCAs: e.g. patch recall, patch sequencing, preset patterns such as quadrature panning, etc.
Suitable as a 4x4 mixer, splitter, as well as dynamic signal router/processor

Module size:
The VCA Matrix is 28HP, and approximately 1.5" deep (38mm).

Power consumption:
A jumper selects using +5V from the power supply, or generating +5V on-board from the +12V rail.

-12V rail: 100mA max
+12V rail:
75mA max with jumper selecting external 5V
110mA max with jumper selecting internal 5V.
+5V rail:
40mA max with jumper selecting external 5V
not used (0mA) with jumper selecting internal 5V."

4ms VCAMatrix and PEG at Musik Messe 2011

YouTube Uploaded by 4mspedals on Apr 23, 2011

"Here we are at MusikMesse demoing our newest products for the Eurorack modular synthesizer system: the VCA Matrix, a 4x4 matrix of 16 VCAs with mute buttons, manual level pots, and CV controls... And the Pingable Envelope Generator (PEG), a wavetable-based dual envelope module that synchronizes the length of the envelopes to a division/multiple of an incoming clock time.

The VCA Matrix has 4 clocks from an SCM running into the inputs, and the outputs are controlling the pitch, wave folding, and filter amount of a basic VCO/VCF patch... this is generating the repeating melody line.

The PEG is generating two envelopes which are modulating the Morph and FM of a Morphing Terrarium module. Both envelopes are triggered by a shuffled SCM output."
