Capturing the Ionosphere: Ground Station Calliope - DIY Satellite

A project by Sandy Antunes on Kickstarter. See the link for additional details and to pledge. If you pledge enough you can get your name engraved in the Calliope! It does burn up on re-entry though. :)

"The short version: buy mission patches and flight pins and you are supporting a home-built orbiting satellite for converting the ionosphere to music for you and everyone to listen to!...

Ever wonder how active space is? Soon, you'll be able to hear it. In 2011, one of the most novel musical instruments will be launched into space: Project Calliope. 'Capturing the Ionosphere' is the effort to capture and record what Calliope 'hears' for its brief 6-12 week life, and bring that to musicians. Called sonification, it lets you hear the activity of the ionosphere, that layer of space where low-earth satellites fly and where the auroras occur."

Some addition info from http://projectcalliope.com/ for the archives:
"Project Calliope is a home-built satellite, launcing in 2011 to convert the ionosphere (where auroras occur) into sound so we can hear on Earth just how active space is. The data will be sent down as MIDI data via amateur ham radio for anyone to hear, and we'll make it available to musicians as royalty-free MIDI tracks to use, reuse and remix into cool music. I like the idea of flying something in space whose purpose is to make music until it dies-- music from science."

Computers in Action

YouTube Uploaded by dj2mn on May 18, 2011

"Here's me and my hair in 1982 demonstrating a sound card for the Apple II that makes "three distinct tones" which were in fact square waves. If i remember correctly you could peek & poke machine code values to change the duty cycle of the waveform, but mostly you just bleeped away in square.

The clip is from the ABC Children's Education show "Computers in Action" which was showing kids the amazing things computers could do at the time. I think the segment after mine was about traffic lights.

(Apologies for the poor audio, there was a plug loose somewhere. Also, yes, this is hilarious, you are allowed to lol.)"

Computers in Action Theme

Uploaded by dj2mn on May 18, 2011

"I composed the theme for a 1983 ABC TV edumacational show for kids called "Computers in Action." If you're thinking to yourself "Look Around You" then you'd be right - but this was the real thing. Transferred from old VHS with a dodgy audio cable so apologies for the sound. As if you really need it in THX."

MaceoParker.mov [Saxophone Meets Moog]

YouTube Uploaded by MoogMusicInc on May 19, 2011

"Beginning with the natural sound of Maceo's Fresh N' Funky Alto Sax, we quickly hurdle into another dimension by adding the MF-101 Low Pass Filter to the mix. Crankin' on the Cutoff knob of the MF-101 Low Pass Filter draws out an analog "Wah" that allows for additional sonic articulations -- say, "Wah-wah What?!?" It is recommended to keep the Resonance & Mix on the high side to bring out the most color when using this charismatic extension of your horn's voice. The MF-102 Ring Modulator, and MF-103 12-Stage Phaser are being used here to add anywhere from subtle tremolo effects, to mild grit to the tones being passed from the MF-101 Low Pass Filter, and MF-104Z Analog Delay. The root of all Space-Funk is in our MF-104Z Analog Delay -- setting the Delay Time knob to a desirable tempo/pulse, and the Feedback knob to the desirable echo length, gives Maceo an analog canvas to work with that he can both apply color to, and take color from -- watch as he pauses to explore his audio imprint, then snatches it back to shape again. Rocking on the Delay Time switch, and tweaking the Delay Time knob at the end of Maceo's phrases twists his sound to an otherworldly degree, creating a stunning sonic vertigo. Where will our Moogerfoogers take your horn?"
